CAF's ban on Togo can only come as a huge relief. The decision of the Togo team affected a lot of things including, costing us (Nigeria) a place in the finals though so many people have not seen it from this angle - have a look at thisif Togo had remained in the competition, we probably wouldn't have met Ghana in the semis cause most likely Togo would have beaten Ghana to the second place in group D - Also let us remember that by the time we met Ghana, they had played LESS amount of games than us (2) and had more rest days (8 rest days) while we had just two |
i think it's an issue of power play - togolese govt were not diplomatic in the way they handled the situation - they should have allowed the players to decide - Togo government wanted to show that they were in control and CAF is trying to show them that they are bigger than any team - it's not about sentiments |
this is quite shocking - i just heard it from Sky News 3 mins ago -Togo National team (Hawks) has been banned from the next African cup of nations - reasons not yet known - full details later January 30, 2010 Comment Togo have been banned from the next two editions of the African Nations Cup because of "governmental interference" in their decision to pull out of the 2010 tournament after the machine-gun attack on the team bus. GettyImages The football world was left shocked by events in Angola The African Football Confederation (CAF) were unhappy that Togolese prime minister Gilbert Huongbo ordered his team to return from Angola, following the attack on their bus by a separatist movement in Cabinda that left two members of the delegation dead. After initially pulling out of the competition, the Togo players then decided to play before being ordered back to the country by Huongbo. They were then disqualified by CAF for not turning up to their opening match against Ghana. CAF president Issa Hayatou told AFP the decision to suspend the country from the 2012 and 2014 competitions was based on "governmental interference". The armed wing of the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), embroiled in a decades-long separatist struggle, claimed responsibility for the attack. |
Expectations that President Umaru Yar‘Adua would return to the country this weekend from Saudi Arabia where he had been hospitalised in the past 68 days, receiving treatment for acute pericarditis, may not materialise. Reason: Doctors tending to Yar‘Adua at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Jedda, may have warned his wife, Hajia Turai, and the President‘s kitchen cabinet against heightened plans to move him prematurely from Saudi Arabia to Nigeria. Saturday Punch investigation revealed that the agitated doctors who were of the opinion that the Present‘s health had not improved, had also handed over a disclaimer to the First Lady who is the next of kin of the President to fill if she insisted on acting against experts‘ opinion on the sensitive health issue. The position of the Saudi doctors was said to have followed the insistence by Turai and members of the President‘s kitchen cabinet that Yar‘Adua must be moved to Nigeria on or before January 29 (yesterday), in order to sustain his hold onto power. A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity alleged that Turai and the kitchen cabinet members deliberately deceived Nigerians about the reported improvement of the President‘s health, saying it was meant to halt the process of paving the way for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to assume power as the Acting President of the country. It was also revealed that contrary to the impression created by the First Lady and her team, the President was still in the Intensive Care Unit of the King Faisal Hospital and was lucky to have survived a critical condition last Friday. Contrary to the position of the hospital, they were also said to have procured a Ford E-25 advanced ambulance with ICU-type equipment in preparation for the planned journey. While the Ford-20 ambulance reportedly arrived in Lagos on January 20, it was transported to Abuja three days after, with efforts being made to charter a similarly equipped air ambulance to fly the President back to the country. The plan was to fly the President into the country late in the night to beat the arrival of a delegation from the House of Representatives, billed to pay Yar‘Adua a goodwill visit early this week. It was further gathered that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia authorities had given a tacit support to Turai and her group by tactically denying Nigerians suspected of travelling to the country to enquire about the President‘s health condition visas. Meanwhile, indication has emerged that there is a face off between the members of the President‘s kitchen cabinet and some of their supporters who they accuse of not doing enough to defend the Yar‘Adua presidency. It was revealed that a memo purportedly signed by Yar‘Adua titled ”Restructuring the Presidency” and sent to the country through one of the President‘s daughters is at the root of the bitter disagreement. The memo, said to be drafted by the core members of the kitchen cabinet conveyed the decision of Yar‘Adua to sack some members of the Federal Executive Council. Those listed for sacking include the Secretary to the Federal Government, Alhaji Ahmed Yayale; Head of Service, Mr. Steven Oronsaye; Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Rilwanu Lukeman; Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili; Minister of Power, Dr. Lanre Babalola; Minister of the Interior, Dr. Shettima Mustapha; and the Attorney General and Minister of Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa. The alleged plan to sack these ministers ostensibly for the failures in the power, communication and the constitutional shortcomings was strategically designed to cause confusion and divert attention from the burning issue of the President‘s health. It was said that the letter had not been made public obviously because of fears among the authors of the document that the agitated Nigerian public might raise issues with the letter. They were said to have held onto the letter because of the feeling that Nigerians would demand to know how a President who could not draft a letter of handover to his deputy to the National Assembly, could write such a letter of terminating the appointment of his ministers. It was also gathered that Turai and the group were not very comfortable with a former Governor from the South-South and another serving Governor from the western axis of the North Central who they felt were not doing enough to defend what they perceived to be a threatened Yar‘Adua presidency contrary to expectations. The group is said to be relying more on a former Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service during the military regime to intensify the campaign for the defence of the Yar‘Adua presidency in the guise of protecting the political interest of the North. The former Customs boss and a top chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party from the South-South were allegedly given about N60m by a Governor from the North Western part of the country to enlist the support of members of the Board of Trustees of the party against deliberating the health of the President during its meeting penultimate Thursday v |
'Amodu Must Go' Campaign Re-Surfaces, As Eagles Battle Algeria For Bronze Mohammed Flown To South Africa For Surgery From Gowon Akpodonor, Luanda THESE are not the best of times for Super Eagles Coach, Shaibu Amodu. With the pain of Nigeria's semifinal defeat still burning in his heart, some members of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, FA board and journalists in Angola have joined in the 'Amodu must go' campaign. Amodu and the Eagles left the Angolan capital city of Luanda for Benguela yesterday for what has become their regular place in the Africa Cup of Nations (battle for bronze), but without one of the players, Yusuf Mohammed, who was flown to Johannesburg, South Africa for an operation on the achilles' tendon injury which he sustained in the semifinal match against Ghana on Thursday. Mohammed, who played the game of his life against the Ghanaians, may miss the South Africa 2010 World Cup party, as an official of the team said yesterday that the injury might sideline him for over eight months. Yusuf was accompanied to Johannesburg yesterday by the team's Media Officer, Peterside Idah and one doctor. He will undergo operation at the Rose Bank Clinic in Johannesburg. As the team headed for the Benguela yesterday, some Supporters Club members refused to be part of the team, saying that Amodu's "dirty antics" had destroyed the Eagles. "Why should I continue to punish myself supporting a team whose coach does not know what he is doing? "I blame the NFF for keeping faith with Amodu when millions of Nigerians said he should be allowed to go. He has demonstrated that he is not the type of coach the Eagles need to excel in a competition like the Nations Cup," said the Supporters Club member yesterday. Amodu is being criticized for his poor reading of matches and wrong substitutions. The coach is also receiving knocks from Nigerians, including journalists, covering the games. Rather than show signs of remorse after the defeat to Ghana, Amodu, in his usual manner, continued with his attack on Nigerian journalists, labeling them as "busy bodies." When reacting to a question asked by one of the journalists at the post match conference attended by people from all parts of Africa and beyond, Amodu said: "I think you Nigerian journalists should limit yourself to reporting the game instead of asking unnecessary questions on technical issues. In Nigeria, everybody is a coach and I feel you journalists should face your reporting and leave coaching job for those who know it." The Nigerian journalists had asked why Amodu could not pull out Obafemi Martins after he missed so many chances in front of goals. Apart from the journalists, some board members of the NFF are not comfortable with Amodu's reaction to issues. One of them complained openly yesterday at the team's hotel that the coach was "too arrogant." His grouse was that Amodu ordered the bus driver to take off when some members of the NFF, including the team's Coordinator, Emmanuel Attah, were still in the hotel sorting out issues concerning the players' jersey for today's match against Algeria. |
Odemwingie Blasts Amodu, As NFF Plans Changes in Super Eagles OSAZE Odemwingie, who was one of the few bright spots in the Super Eagles' campaign at the Angola 2010 African Nations Cup, has blamed the team's coach, Shaibu Amodu for Nigeria's 0-1 loss to Ghana in the semifinal of the competition on Thursday. The Locomotive Moscow star says the tactics adopted by Amodu for the game cost Nigeria the match, saying that the Eagles were too negative against a team lacking many of its main players. An early goal from Asamoah Gyan left the Super Eagles on the back foot, and although they mustered a second half cavalry charge, it came too late to break down their ailing opponents. "We started with a lone striker, just like the Ghanaian team. This did not help us because we had too few chances. He should have changed things quickly but he did nothing, yet we knew Ghana would play with their backs to goal. "We had three defensive midfielders who don't create goals. In these circumstances, we couldn't cross or create chances. There was no logic in our game and that's why we could not win, " he said. Meanwhile, going by the words of some NFF board members, it is almost certain that Amodu would not lead Nigeria to the World Cup coming up in South Africa in June. Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Taiwo Ogunjobi, hinted yesterday that the Super Eagles would be reorganised to position it for a credible performance in South Africa. "We will take a critical look and make changes to the technical team and the players," Ogunjobi said. He revealed that the "NFF Executive Committee has already directed the technical committee to submit a comprehensive report of the team's performance here, in a matter of days. This report will guide the Executive Committee in making pertinent changes." Ogunjobi added: "There is also the need to inject fresh legs into the team in order to engender keen competition for places. Our goal is to make necessary changes that will lead us to a creditable performance at the FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa this summer." |

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday adopted a motion to ban the music album of St. Janet, titled Faaji Plus, from being played in public places and broadcast stations on the grounds that it promotes obscenity. The motion, which was moved by Sanai Agunbiade, representing Ikorodu I, was widely accepted by the lawmakers because they said the album’s popularity is “spreading like wildfire.” The album, which was released into the market about three months ago and marketed by Omu Iyadun Music, is sung entirely in Yoruba. According to the lawmakers, the album was filled with lewd lyrics craftily composed around gospel chorus tunes. A music critic, Ayeni Adekunle, the Chief Executive of Black House Media, said “it is good that the government is making attempt to protect all of us, especially our children”. But Mr. Adekunle’s concern borders on the legal privilege that the lawmakers have to enforce such order. “Should they ban the album or complain to the National Broadcasting Commission?” he asked. According to Mr. Adekunle, any music deemed to contain explicit content should be labelled as NCDB level, meaning not to be broadcast. This means the airing of such music should be restricted to certain places like night clubs. Wale Ogunade, a legal practitioner, however, said that the lawmakers are in order. “The House of Assembly is the lawmaking body of the state. So, they have the right to make laws for the good governance of the state,” he affirmed, in a telephone interview with NEXT |
Anxiety over the health condition of President Umaru Yar’Adua, particularly on the time of his reported plan to return to Nigeria, has continued to grip the country’s seat of power amid signals that the president, who has been out of sight for 67 days, is now incommunicado. Checks around the corridors of power in Abuja revealed that so intense was the problem that even Vice President Goodluck Jonathan and the Senate President, Senator David Mark, could not reach him through telephone, contrary to the impression being given. In the past few weeks, the spin doctors of President Yar’Adua have been making Nigerians to believe that the president was in good condition, and that those in the key positions of authority have never had problems communicating with him, at least through telephone. Notwithstanding, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had, on Wednesday, told the nation that President Yar’Adua was fit to continue to rule Nigeria, thus implying that all efforts towards making him hand over to his deputy, in acting capacity, were needless. The position of the FEC on Yar’Adua had generated outrage across the country on the basis that the members had failed to present a required medical report on the health condition of the president to Nigerians before concluding that he was strong enough to steer the ship of the state. Saturday Tribune, through close aides of top men in power, confirmed that the last time Jonathan, Mark and cabinet members spoke with President Yar’Adua was before he granted the controversial interview to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Indication that relevant people in government have not been having privileged access to the president emerged during the week, as each of them, out of curiosity and eagerness to scoop latest information about him, began to make telephone calls to one another on available information, while no one could say specifically that he was in touch. Meanwhile, some top sources in Abuja disclosed to Saturday Tribune that the president had left Saudi Arabia, and had been brought into the country almost four weeks ago and had since been kept in an undisclosed location to properly recuperate before returning to power. However, efforts made to verify the report proved abortive as none of the top aides of the president so contacted was willing to offer a comment. On the contrary, speculations are rife that President Yar’Adua will be arriving Nigeria this weekend, amid reports that an advance team from Saudi Arabia, where he was believed to be receiving treatment, had already arrived in the country. Some elder statesmen and leaders of thought, led by General Yakubu Gowon during the week, added impetus to the agitations for Yar’Adua to hand over power to Jonathan to act on his behalf. The growing tension in Nigeria over the continued absence of President Yar’Adua has also started attracting the attention of world powers, as foreign ministers, who converged on London Thursday, issued a statement, urging Nigeria to resolve the problem of leadership vacuum in the country by constitutional means. |
PLS NOTE: THIS STORY DID NOT HAPPEN TO ME BUT I ONLY WANT TO GEI PEOPLE'S OPINION ON THIS Dear Agatha, I have been married for just one year and already my husband is complaining bitterly about my sexual performance. I have tried to be the kind of woman he wants me to be but I am limited severely by the type of training I got as a young child. My mother presented intimacy as dirty and only done when a man and woman are making babies. She told me never to allow my man use me as a intimacy tool; that it was ungodly for a man and woman to have intimacy when they are not thinking of making babies. She said men were selfish and animals who were always requesting for intimacy from women. She told me never to UnCloth in the presence of my husband and that we should always do it when it is dark. My elder sister whose husband threw out of her matrimonial home has told me not to mind our mother if I don’t want to end up like her; her husband is now married to another woman. My mother says my sister’s husband is the son of the devil. She says any woman who enjoys intimacy is a love-peddler. My husband respected me enough not to pressure me into having intimacy with him before our wedding night. A month after our wedding I still hadn’t allowed him near me until he forced himself on me one night. Since then, it has been a tug of war getting me to sleep with him. I love my husband so much; I don’t want to lose him to another woman. I am forced to come to you to teach me what I should do to keep him. I am sure his decency and respect for me is what is keeping him from going after other women because not only is he extremely handsome, he has both the means and experience to get any woman he wants. I am really desperate to do what I have to do. Please help me if you really want this marriage of mine to survive. You are the only hope I have as I can’t discuss this with any other person and don’t even have any idea where to begin from. I am 28 years old while my husband is 32. Ann. |
i came across the newspaper interview of lewd singer saint janet - enjoy it ![]() Spinner of lewd songs, Janet Ajilore, popularly called St. Janet, tells the story of her adventures in controversial music in an interview with AKEEM LASISI Since Faaji Plus came out with a feast of vulgar lyrics, a lot of people have been wondering who the person behind the microphone is. So, who is St. Janet? I am Mrs. Janet Ajilore, a native of Osu, in Ilesa area of Osun State. For how long did you live in Osu? I did not really live there. I have lived in Abeokuta, and now I live in Lagos. Why are you asking, really? I know that a good number of comedians have come from that area. And there seems to be something naturally amusing in Ijesa dialect. If that is the case, I may have got some influence from my background. I am a comedian. I used to perform with some theatre groups in Ilesa and Abeokuta areas. When did you get into music? I started about 17 years ago. I started as a back up singer to my master then, Lord Kenge. What kind of music does Kenge sing and where is he now? Highlife. He is still in Abeokuta. When did you leave the Kenge band? I started on my own 10 years ago. Faaji Plus is said to be a recording of a live performance. Why have you not released an album in the past 10 years? Well, there have been a lot of effort in that direction. I have also been trying to deal with challenges posed by marketers. But in two months’ time, my first album will be out. That sounds like good news for your fans. But it is definitely a source of headache to those who have expressed displeasure at the lewd contents of Faaji Plus. What are we expecting in the album? You see, what I want you to understand is that Faaji Plus was not meant to be released to the public. It is for a class of people. It is for my big fans. The songs are for those who request for them. Who are these big fans? Ah, you want to know. You cannot know because it is complicated. Meaning what? Let…let’s leave it there. Some people who have listened to the songs are worried that you pounced on Christian songs and turned them into something else. They note that even if you wanted to adapt songs, you should have tinkered with secular ones – a ‘saint’ that you are. What is a gospel song? I take it to mean those normally sung in the church. If you call something gospel song, it is just what people want it to be. There is no gospel song, but there are lyrics. You say you are the General Overseer of Sinners’ Chapel, St. Bottles Cathedral. How large is your cathedral? Very, very large. In fact, the largest in the whole world. The members are not only here in Nigeria, they are in London, America and everywhere. Where is the cathedral based? (Laughter) Even where we are now is a cathedral, because wherever one or two of us are gathered, we already have a cathedral. One thing people have also queried is how a woman will sit down to compose those vulgar songs. How do you compose them? When I am on the stage, I sing what comes to my mind. I don‘t sit down to compose. Are you saying that that is the way the songs in Faaji Plus came out? Yes. I did not compose them, nor did I do any rehearsal for them. Is that possible? The songs came out too neat to believe they were not rehearsed. That is what I learnt from my master. He does not do rehearsals. How did you get the title “Saint”? I got it from my master. In those days in Abeokuta, when we were not on stage, I would just go and sit all alone in a corner. Then, the band boys would be challenging me, “You this girl, what kind of a person are you? You hardly talk. Yet, when we get to the stage, your voice will be the loudest.” My master would now come in and say, “Leave her for me. She is a saint.” Some people have also expressed the opinion that you might have been sent packing from your original church; and that that is probably why you have gone rebellious with your songs. No. Why will they send me packing from my church? Apart from the biggest church where you are the G. O., what popular church do you attend – where, I believe, you will be a member of the choir. I am a Christian. And my church is known to me. Which one? It’s a gospel church where they preach the word of God. The Lagos State House of Assembly deliberated upon your music last week, threatening to ban Faaji Plus and possibly arrest you. I thank God for that. Before now, I had never seen the Lagos State House of Assembly talking about any musician. But the ban…. I will not want to talk about that. Why? Could that be suggesting that you have some big fans among the lawmakers? I will not like to talk about that. In the album, are you going to sing lewd songs? (Laughs) I sing that kind of songs for people who request for them. If you request for it, I will give it to you. But it is not the only kind of songs I am capable of singing. What type of beer do you drink especially during performance? I drink water. Water and nothing else. And you are the G. O. of St. Bottles Cathedral? I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke anything. We never planned to release Faaji Plus to the public – Promoter, Sina Ayo-Oyinlola What is the genesis of Faaji Plus? I am a promoter. I got her album from her, which I said I was going to work towards releasing. The album is purely a gospel album. You can see it here (shows some pieces of music stored in his phone). You can see it: St Janet 3: Master. I will play it to you, so that you can see it is a purely gospel song. (Plays for about a minute…) So, that is the album I was working on. But I now said, ”As a promoter, I should know the extent to which this artiste could perform.” That was how she invited me to one of her shows, which was an indoor show. Indoor show? Where was that? Yes, it was an indoor show. But I cannot disclose where, because it was one of the influential people in the country that organised the show. When we were there, she played very well. Everyone enjoyed and danced very well. All she sang were gospel, philosophical and social songs that I enjoyed very well too. There was nothing like Idi nla (big buttocks) songs. But when it got around 3:30 am, many people had left, including those who went there with girls. But there were some still ready for more. We urged her to perform till, at least 5 am. It was then she told me that she was also a comedian. I was also interested in that. I asked her to do anything that was still funny. I wanted to see how creative or crazy she was. As a promoter, I must know all those things. By the time she started, I was amazed. Everybody there was amazed. People whose names she could not throw into the jokes in the songs were not even pleased enough. That was when I told her to use names of her band boys, since it was not possible to mention the names of everyone. All the names mentioned in Faaji Plus are those of her boys - of course, with my name and that of her husband. So, you are saying Faaji Plus was not planned? We were just playing. It was a mere coincidence. When then did you record it? Anything she does even during live performance must be recorded. The moment the performance was over, I picked the recording and kept in my car because I didn‘t want anybody to do anything with it. But whenever some of my friends were in my car, I played it for them, although with the conviction that they would not do anything with it. So, I even gave it out to about four of my friends. The question still is: since it was not meant for the public, how did it get to the market? Faaji Plus was in my car for over two months because I was still working on it. But one night, a friend of mine called me from Alaba and asked, ”Sina where is the live play you were playing in your car the other day?‘ I told him it was still in my car. He said, ”Ol‘ boy, the music is no more in your car o.” In short, he had discovered that some pirates had got the recording and they were in the process of releasing it. So…? In the process of pondering what to do, I got the advice that we should produce about a thousand copies of Faaji Plus. Take them to her fans - the big, big ones. Give it to them and let them pay good money. This will be good for her and her work. What then happened when you did the 1000 copies? Out of the 1,000 copies, I first took 300 copies that I started taking round. But before I knew what was happening, the so-called marketer I gave it to did not wait for me before he started rolling it out. How many copies of Faaji Plus would you thus say have been sold? I am a promoter, not a marketer. So, I do not know. But don‘t forget that the way music goes round is not determined by how many copies of an albums are sold. Someone gets it, five or more people may copy it from him or her. I am not denying the fact that Faaji Plus has sold well, but for now, I can‘t say the exact figure. Now that the music that is not meant for the public has got out, will you like to do anything possible to stop its circulation? Have you stopped rolling it out? We are not even producing copies again. And I doubt if any record seller still have it. You go and check. But nobody can know what pirates are also doing. And whether I stop promoting it or not, Faaji Plus is already out. The only caution I can give is that they should be playing it in clubs, hotels and private moments. In my interview with St Janet, I unsuccessfully sought to know who her ‘big fans‘ are. You don‘t expect me to start to mention names of who her special fans are. There are some people you can‘t mention here. But the fans base is very, very large. If 80 people call me in a day to comment on the work, 75 are saying: ”Keep up the good work,” why only five are saying: ”What is all this rubbish?” But you, do you personally encourage her to sing on as far as Faaji Plus is concerned? Actually, I don‘t see it as anything that bad. People see Nigeria as a religious country, but we are not a religious country in the real sense of it. We are only covering up because of the poverty and other problems in the country. If people have a lot to eat well, get into their house and have light and water to drink and shower, you will see that nobody will be in the church again. Saint Janet also went as far as mentioning names of some churches. Anything she said in the live play is a mere joke. We don‘t have anything against any church. It was a joke that anybody could crack in the circumstance. But we didn‘t know it would become something this popular. But, mind you, a lot of people crack jokes worse than this in our different corners. What about the stand-up comedians who, during their concerts, crack jokes about various churches and even mention names of particular pastors? This is how people should look at Faaji Plus. When is the original album coming out? Don‘t get us wrong. There is nothing like ‘original album‘. It is the album. Because if you don‘t get it right, it will be as if we have had one, and we are working on it. Will it contain songs similar to what we have in Faaji Plus? Well, as a human being, if you eat amala today, you eat it tomorrow, won‘t you like to eat something else? But all I can assure you is that her fans will get all they want in the album. I told you that the songs you called lewd or vulgar or whatever got out unplanned. But now that she has been identified with it, there is no way she will stop singing it. All we will do is that we are going to work on it here and there. I also want people to get it clear that Janet may be comic in her songs she is a committed and serious artiste. Some people will be thinking that the lady singing this type of songs must be a spoilt person. Indeed, most times, she goes about with her husband. So, she is a word-and-opposite of what she is singing. How commercially viable has it been to you as a promoter? (Laughter) We have not got money yet. But, sincerely speaking, it has brought a lot of shows. In a week, she could get up to six shows at times. Weddings, naming, birthdays. It‘s only when people now say: ”Come and play in my club. I need those lewd ones.” That‘s when she goes to give it to them. |
i heard the songs of this female juju musician in a shop sometimes ago - i think the name is saint janet or so - very talented singer but the whole album from start to finish is pure obcenity and lewd lyrics - has anyone heard about her and what do you think? |

Nigeria coach Shuaibu Amodu has admitted that the Super Eagles have not played at their best in Angola, but says the team will improve if he stays in charge. Amodu, who has been under pressure since the beginning of the tournament earlier this month, admitted on Thursday his players "didn't play at their best" in Angola but promised "they will improve if I stay in charge". Amodu is under contract with the NFF until August. He all but secured his job by reaching the Nations Cup semifinals but with his team failing to impress, then losing to Ghana, his employers will come under pressure to get in some assistance for him. |

Written by Ayodele Adesanmi, Bola Badmus, Idowu Samuel, Bolaji Ogundele , Dare Adekanmbi, with Agency Reports THE United States, United Kingdom and other world leaders, on Thursday, waded into the row in Nigeria over President Umaru Yar’Adua’s health , lamenting the “uncertainty” caused by his absence just as some eminent Nigerians, including past heads of government endorsed ceding of power to the vice-president. A joint statement by the United States, European Union, Britain and France, stated that “Nigeria is going through a period of uncertainty because of the prolonged illness of the president.” The powers said they welcomed constitutional efforts in Nigeria, one of the world’s top oil producers, to “resolve the question of governing authority in the president’s prolonged absence.” President Yar’Adua has been receiving treatment for a serious heart condition in Saudi Arabia since November 23. Three separate legal challenges are currently underway in the Federal High Court to force the government to hand presidential powers to his deputy, Dr Goodluck Jonathan. Separately, the government and the Senate have openly clashed over how to deal with Yar’Adua’s prolonged absence and his apparent refusal to hand power to his deputy from his hospital bed in Jeddah. In the statement issued on Thursday, the world powers said: “Nigeria’s stability and democracy carry great significance beyond its immediate borders,” given its importance as a global oil producer and stabilising force in West Africa. The statement signed by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, France’s Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and European Union High Representative, Catherine Ashton, was issued in London as foreign ministers met to discuss how to assist war-torn Afghanistan. It is the first time foreign powers have openly expressed concern about Yar’Adua’s absence amid concerns by opposition groups that the president’s illness has made him incapable of ruling the 150 million-strong population of Nigeria, Africa’s second-biggest oil producer. Jonathan, who has been filling in for the president, has been unable to assume full powers because Yar’Adua has not formally informed parliament of his absence, which his opponents say is a breach of the constitution. They also accused the government of covering up the extent of Yar’Adua’s illness. An unwritten policy of the ruling PDP allows a rotation of power between the Christian south and the Muslim north. Yar’Adua is a Muslim, while Jonathan is a southern Christian. “We extend our best wishes to President Yar’Adua and his family and join the Nigerian people in wishing him a full recovery,” said the foreign ministers’ statement. But it nonetheless commended efforts to break the political deadlock gripping the country, pointing to the recent outbreak of religious and ethnic violence in Jos, which claimed hundreds of lives. “Nigerians have launched an important conversation in examining how constitutional processes can resolve the question of governing authority in the president’s prolonged absence. “We commend these efforts and their pursuit through appropriate Nigerian democratic institutions to address its citizens’ concerns.” Also, a group of eminent Nigerians, under the aegis of the Eminent Elders Group (EEG), led by former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, has asked President Umaru Yar’Adua to transmit a communication to the National Assembly to enable Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to assume office as acting president in accordance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution. The group, which met with Senate president, Mr David Mark, on Thursday, submitted a proposal addressed to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in which it indicated that the issue of acting president should be resolved in favour of the provisions of Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution. Other members of the group, who visited to the Senate on Thursday, included former head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; former Chief Justices of the Federation, Justices Muhammadu Uwais, Alfa Belgore; Idris Kutigi; Lt. Gen. T.Y. Danjuma; former governor of Plateau State, Chief Solomon Lar; South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark; former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma; a former Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Joda; former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana and a former Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Jonathan Zwingina. The group, in its letter to the president of the Senate, said that the way out of the current political situation in the country was to ensure that the president transmitted a letter to the National Assembly transferring power to the vice-president in acting capacity. Though the group did not openly read the contents of the letter, the Nigerian Tribune got a copy of the document. The EEG stated: “It is important to resolve this issue by inviting the president to formally issue the necessary communication that will enable the vice-president to be acting president in accordance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution as soon as possible.” General Gowon, who signed the letter, said that the group had become worried at the prolonged absence of President Yar’Adua. He submitted: “For well over eight weeks now, our president has been ill and out of the country. This illness and long absence from the county is causing serious concern, not only to Nigerian citizens but also those who do business with Nigeria and have the well-being of the country at heart. “It is for this reason that I called the meeting of some of our former presidents and heads of state, former Chief Justices of Nigeria and elder statesmen today. Following a critical review of the general political situation of the country in the recent past, but more especially since the illness of the president and his prolonged absence, it was decided to address this letter to the vice-president and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. “Resolution of the issue of acting president pending the return of the president is imperative. It is important to resolve this issue by inviting the president to formally issue the necessary communication that will enable the vice-president to be acting president in accordance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution as soon as possible.” He said that it was because the group became worried that it called a meeting of elder statesmen in Abuja, which was attended by the above-mentioned Nigerian leaders. He further submitted: “Following a critical review of the general political situation of the country in the recent past, but more especially since the illness of the president and his prolonged absence, it was decided to address this letter to your Excellency, the Vice-President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.” The submission is a vindication of the motion passed by the Senate on Wednesday, which urged the ailing president to transmit a letter to the National Assembly in line with Section 145 of the Constitution. The President of the Senate, Mr Mark, who received the elders, said that their visit was timely, adding that the Senate would benefit from their wealth of experience. He said: ``The experience this group will bring on board will be immeasurable. We believe that we need to be notified that the president is on medical vacation. ``In doing this, we were conscious of the security, political and power balancing in this country. The unity of this country is of utmost importance. ``We are humbled by your humility. We are anxious to put this impasse behind us so that we can make progress.’’ The motion in the Senate was pushed through by the National Interest Group (NIG), a group of senators who insisted that the constitution must be respected. NIG leader, Senator Bala Mohammed, said in a telephone interview that the passage of the motion was a victory for justice and equity over parochial and selfish interests. He declared that members of the NIG placed the interest of Nigeria above personal interests. He said: “The outcome of the motion we passed in the Senate is a triumph of justice and equity over parochial paranoia over people who are selfish and don’t want things done the proper way. “This is a national issue and, naturally, power should flow to the number two man, even if it is not an issue of the constitution. It is a lesson for us that we should not relegate ourselves and that there should be an end to the mutual suspicion in power circles. “Our motion was free of any parochial feelings and we believe that the issue of power rotation and power permutation is an internal affair of a party; it is not the plan of the constitution. Meanwhile, President Yar’Adua has been given a 48-hour ultimatum to resign as president, or risked being impeached by the National Assembly. The ultimatum came on the heels of the revelation, on Thursday, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, that about 200 members of the House of Representatives had agreed with the move to swear in Vice-President Jonathan as acting president. Speaking at a roundtable organised by the United Niger Delta Energy Development and Security Strategy (UNDEDSS) on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin, said Nigeria could not be yoked to a sick president. Odumakin noted that President Yar’Adua’s aides had treated Nigerians with disrespect, thereby costing the president the sympathy of Nigerians. “They have made this man to forfeit the sympathy he could have got from the people, Nigerians are sympathetic people. “Yar’Adua’s aides have taken us for a ride, they have treated us less than human beings, they have devalued us and that’s why today, we have gone beyond Yar’Adua. Jonathan should be made the president of this country, not acting president any more. “We commend the Senate for what it did yesterday, though belated. We are asking that, if within 48 hours it has not received a letter that Yar’Adua has resigned, the Senate should start impeachment proceedings against him. The House of Representatives should also take a position on this matter,” Odumakin said. Also speaking at the event, a member of the House of Representatives, Honour-able George Daika, said about 200 members of the lower chamber had signed the motion asking for the swearing-in of Vice-President Jonathan as acting president. Daika, a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, lamented the current unimpressive structure of leadership in the country, adding that there was the need to fill the vacuum created by the absence of the president, due to his state of health. The roundtable, which was graced by social activists in the country, had Alabo Tonye Graham-Douglas as chairman, while dignitaries like King Alfred Diette-Spiff, Ambassador Segun Olusola, Professor Kevin Etta, as well as the President of UNDEDSS, Professor Pat Utomi, were in attendance. In a related development, a retired justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Kayode Eso, has told ailing President Yar’Adua and those shielding him to stop insulting Nigerians and bow to the dictate of the constitution by writing to the National Assembly to authorise his deputy to act as president. The retired justice gave the remarks in an interview with newsmen, on Thursday, at the first annual lecture in honour of Mr. Benjamin Adeyemi, as part of activities marking his 80th birthday, at the Jogor Centre, Ibadan, Oyo State. Eso, who described the ongoing constitutional crisis as uncalled for, said Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution was clear enough on what should be done when a situation like the current one happened. “What is happening is not a big issue. People are not following the constitution. The constitution is made for reasonable people, who will understand the English written in it. The hullabaloo being witnessed is an indication that Nigerians are being insulted by President Yar’Adua,” Justice Eso said. The octogenarian, while responding to a question on election tribunals, berated the judiciary for allowing election petitions to drag endlessly, adding that “ it is absolutely disgraceful that election petition cases, which should have been concluded six months after the elections, are still going on right now.” On the recent eruption of violence in Jos, Plateau State, Justice Eso enjoined the government to do away with the toga of deception and stamp its authority decisively on sensitive national matters, adding that “in Nigeria, it was always talk, talk and talk; no act or action.” Also at the event, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, said rather than castigating the president, the gaps created in the constitution, especially in Section 145, should be amended. According to him, “there are gaps in the constitution. For instance, Section 145 does not deal with what to do when a president is sick and unconscious. He won’t be able to transmit any letter. The constitution has to be amended, but not in a hurry.” The ICPC boss expressed the confidence that President Yar’Adua would allow the constitution to guide his action on the current crisis. He urged Nigerians to be dispassionate in their analyses on how to find a solution to the imbroglio. Responding to the alleged looting spree by some ministers in the absence of the president, Justice Ayoola said it was regrettable to think that once President Yar’Adua was not in Nigeria, the whole country should go to sleep, adding that an individual did not make the nation. He added further that there were accountability mechanisms like the Public Procurement Office and the auditor-general in place to ensure that public officers abided by the rule of spending public funds. Justice Ayoola, who stressed that awareness about the evil of corruption had been overwhelming, said the commission had entrenched integrity mechanism in the nation in the last 10 years of its existence, adding that the zero tolerance stance of the body would not be compromised. Earlier, the celebrant, Mr. Adeyemi, had charged Nigerians to cultivate positive disposition towards the environment, saying that improper waste management posed a grave danger to future generation. |

i know violence is wrong and even the bible frowns against it but it seems it has become a norm in our society particularly in the south and even when it happens, the woman gets the blame. Now, i know some women can be stubborn but is this a reason to get violence? why do men do this and why does our society accept it? ![]()

Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi says the Super Eagles have a point to prove in Thursday's semifinal match-up against West African rivals Ghana at the African Nations Cup. The rivalry between both teams is one of the most intense on the African continent and the Chelsea star, voted Man of the Match in the penalty shoot-out win over Zambia, says the players understand the importance of the game. "Ghana´s match will be different. Any player that will be given a shirt on that day will be fired up to deliver. I know we are playing with a lot of pressure from our fans back home yet that should make us sit up and deliver. "The environment will be different; the whole stadium will not be behind them, besides this team has more to prove than the one that played them two years ago. "Don't ask me how or why, I know we will beat them. We are fired and ready. To have gotten this far, there is no stopping us. In Ghana, there were too many odds going against us, including a massive home support but here we will be starting on a level playing field and we will win." In that game, playing before a vociferously partisan crowd, the Nigerian team lost 2-1 to a 10-man Ghana team. The Ghanaians also won a friendly game by a 4-1 margin a year earlier, and that has given the Black Stars confidence going into Thursday's duel. Ghana eased through their quarterfinal, beating the hosts 1-0 while Nigeria needed extra time and penalties to edge past Zambia, with fans unhappy about the Eagles play on the day. But Mikel says that was a different game. |
