RandomAfricanAm: Time out: (I have a question)
I've been out of the loop for awhile but it seems something in the air has changed. I remember when this first started we were talking about(as in most cultural topic) general information for the sake of knowledge. There seems to be a hint of politics shoved into the fray were people "got something to prove" to some other person.

Am I missing something or what?

i noticed that too, bruv! grin Been following thread. Enjoying all the stuff about a fascinating Central African kingdom.... Then suddenly it was all about slave statistics and which Diasporic Black looks 'Angolan/Kongolese'

Lovely thread messed up! angry

Ovia is not Ofia or Ohia. They are not even accented alike. And the 'O' in Ovia is heavy, not light like in Ofia/Ohia.

Ovia is the name of an Edo deity that is also worshipped in parts of Ikaland.

I just said I should point that out. Carry on, people. Forget I was ever here. grin

Prof_Dumbledore: Pazienza...you know i dont argue your opinion on this forum becos i see them as sensible...so pls try and view things from my vantage point. My Arguement here is not that Igbos in Igboland dont embrace Igbo culture but that those that leave outside Igboland (which constitute half the Igbo populace) Drop their Igboness on their way out.

Truth be told, Yoruba culture dey pursue Igbo culture even from its own home. There are children growing up in Enugu today who use words like 'jara', 'ko', 'ashawo' 'agboro' (should be 'agbero') in everyday speech without knowing those words aren't regular Igbo words. I wonder how many Igbo words the Yorubas use like that.

Moi-moi, akamu and akara...Igbos learnt about them from the Yoruba. Igbo women in Igbo villages tie gele; Igbo men in Igbo villages wear the 'fila' cap and even Agbada. I don't know how many Yoruba men wear Isiagu shirt.

The one wey they pain me pass sef is the adoption of 'aso ebi' tradition by the igbos. 'Aso ebi' has become part and parcel of wedding festivities throughout Igboland. Arrghhh!

onila: Jumping the broom, an African culture practiced by African Americans

This caught my attention. I didn't know jumping the broom was African. I always thought African Americans came up with that independent of African influence.

At the beginning, there was no Yoruba too. Only Oyo was Yoruba.

Ekiti was Ekiti, and Ondo was Ondo. Even today sef some Ijebus dat I know are not even buying into the 'Yoruba' thing. Hehehe tongue

Yes, that's true, bro. Majority of them were from two Igbo Southeastern states, Edo and Delta. grin grin grin

The rest were from Lagos and Benue and Imo and Plateau. All all of them na Igbo states. I think it is only Imo that's not from South East there. cheesy

I keep saying that the average Nigerian is intrinsically anti-Igbo.

Even Igbos. Sad.

But its true oooo. How come people don't go to threads that celebrate Yoruba accomplishments to shout them down? undecided

Obama's name was originally Mbama. From Imo State. grin

Seriously sha, bringing this to Nairaland, NOT a gud idea. Taking it to front page, are u kidding me? undecided undecided

Ibos already have a 'reputation' for claiming, and you go and do this? How about writing articles that address issues facing ibos at home instead of concerning ur self with Americans who their papa-papa-papa happened to be an Ibo slave? Eh? undecided
