Check out that ãss! (geddit? ) |
The Alake is number four in hierarchy? I'm gonna have to brush up my Yoruba history a bit. But this doesn't sound right. Is the Alake among the kings that received a crown from Oduduwa? |
Rivertemz:The first guy is African-American. Other than that, on point! ![]() |
OP, The title of the thread reads different from what you intended. Edit. Writing 'to' is not that difficult. |
tonychristopher:Listen, my good man. Mungo Park did not die in Ibusa or Igbuzor. He never came anywhere near Ibusa or even Southern Nigeria for that matter. Mungo Park died in Bussa which was a town in what is now Niger State in Northern Nigeria. Try not to confuse yourself. |
africanusvu:This got likes?? |
Nigerians have got zero chill. A man can't clown around on twitter again. |
tonychristopher:Did you say Mungo Park died in Igbouzor? ![]() The things I see on Nairaland eh...! ![]() |
FabioPeter:Educative is a correct English word. |
Topshow4real:Because the word is actually 'expatiate'. |
Gwazah:Did you notice that in your screen shot, the example of the use of the word (disvirgin) was taken from a book written by a Nigerian (Gideon Mekwunye)? The word was apparently coined in Nigeria, but seems to be gaining some popularity even outside Nigeria, which is a good thing. |
We shouldn't fight the use of these Nigerian coinages. We should encourage people to use them. Who said we can't evolve our own variant of English, when Australians and Americans and white English-speaking South Africans have their own peculiar English words? |
playtheblues:Masters students are not allowed to bring in dependents to the UK. |
There are also some Tiv in Nasarawa. Don't know how large that population is, however. I hear it is 'significant'. In the end, it does seem that the Tiv outnumber the Nupe, even if by a small margin. |
From school days, we were taught the Tiv were the largest minority ethnicity in the Middle Belt. The Nupe probably come in second. |
Nigerians have a weird idea of what constitutes 'facilities'. I was expecting to see pictures of the inside of laboratories, the inside of libraries, the inside of classrooms. Things like that. Instead I'm looking at pictures of roads and the exterior of buildings. These buildings could have no noteworthy facilities inside them for all we know. |
You now write 'Somali' as 'Somalian'. You now claim to live in the UK, and not in the US. You think you have us fooled, but I know it's you. Even if no one else knows it's you, I do. ![]() |
This is ancient. Very ancient. |
Fulaman198:I remember you explaining to a non-Nigerian on this site that Buhari was a Fulani. That would appear to contradict what you're saying here, since Buhari is from Katsina State, which is in the Northwest. |
WIZGUY69:Oh, you didn't read it, did you? |
Does this old lady have any idea how widely separated Efik-Ibibio lands are from Edo State? Efik-Ibibios would have to be indigenous to Abia, Rivers and Delta before one can even begin to talk of Edo. |
Izbanda01:Definitely not Asaba? ![]() Are you from Asaba? |
alanmwene:Fela may not be the greatest African musician who ever lived. But he was a far more legendary music figure than your Franco. I doubt you will find 10 people outside of Central Africa who have even heard of the man. (I hadn't heard of him until now.) The name 'Fela', however, is recognised across the African continent and even outside it. Even you, a Congolese, have heard of Fela. I'd wager no one on this thread knows or have ever heard of your man Franco. ![]() |
Your pictures threads are way better than your more recent threads. You should perhaps stick to making that type of threads. ![]() |
I can attempt a few, mostly the ones from the Anambra axis: Azikiwe - The youth are quick to express anger. Achebe - a contraction of Anichebe. Means 'May the Earth (goddess) watch over/protect'. Such contractions are common in the Anambra communities close to the Anambra and the Niger rivers. Obiano - in full, it would be 'Obi anoo m mmili'. 'The heart has been softened/filled with compassion'. Anyim - I believe the bearer was named after the Cross River - or (more generally) a big river. Adichie - I'm not very sure. But if it means what it sounds like to me, it would mean something like 'has been replaced'. The kind of name you would give a child born after you had lost a previous one - kind of like Edochie and Onochie. I could be wrong about this one. Tansi - Contraction of Tabansi. Means something along the lines of 'Have patience'/Endure. Abii - a bearer of this last name I know from Mbaise says it means 'manilla money'. |
bigfrancis21:Whatever it is you think you've got, go ahead and post it. You don't need to seek my go-ahead to do so. Knock yourself out. |
bigfrancis21:I hope that by 'those you have come across' you are not referring to the Comrade you brought up earlier, whose hometown is nowhere stated. Its a funny day when an epically dum.b person such as yourself calls another person 'slow'. Kind of like the proverbial mad man who thinks it is everyone else who is mad. Bring forward your Enugu and Anambra Ubanis, and I will give you a lesson on your own Igbo history. I do not doubt that you will find a few and only a few (no way as common as in the Ngwa/Ukwa area). I know of an Ajalli man (Anambra) whose grandfather was named Ubani. I know why his grandfather had that name. But I'll wait for you to fool yourself before I school you on that. |
bigfrancis21:For the billionth time, it is not their native language. They also speak Igbo in Otukpa, Benue, but it is not their native language but a second language. Do you think you can understand this? |
