Wow congratulations on your admission. What course are you going for? Is it undergraduate or Masters or PhD? Cheers. [qquote author=Vokay91 post=87078077]Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to appreciate this platform and everyone who’s actively involved for all they do.

I have been gathering notes from this platform for some weeks now and they’ve been really insightful.

Please I have a challenge and I haven’t really seen people talk about it.

My dad and I bare different surnames.. I bare his grandfather name while he bares his grandfather’s. I have just been granted admission to MUN and I intend to use my dad as my sponsor for my visa application. I am confused, I don’t know how to prove he is my dad.. or am I just worrying myself for nothing ?

Please I need advice on this .
Thanks
Very apt. This summarizes the dos and don't s of graduate school and scholarship application

Dear Great N'landers,
I hope we have been all good? I have missed you so much. Canada has been good just that assignments can make you question your decision of coming to Canada sometimes. Tens of people have sneaked into my PM for advice and I have tried my best for each one of them. I got some free time today so I decided to drop some tips here for everyone to be able to learn one or two things.

GETTING A SUPERVISOR AND POSSIBLY, FUNDING: MY EXPERIENCE WITH NORTH AMERICAN SCHOOLS

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE READY
1) A CV* (not Resume!)
2) Degree certificates (Undergraduate for Masters, Undergraduate and Masters for PhD.)
3) Transcripts (student copy)
Note: Your CV is different from Resume in that the former is concerned about your academic activities, achievements and research objectives. Among other important things, It should contain your overall grades and that of your last two academic years (in percentage), three or four bullet-point research objectives (in place of the career objectives/statements you usually have in resumes), previous awards and scholarships, as well as your research works; published or unpublished. You should always modify this to suit the work of the supervisor and the school you are applying to.

WRITING A SUPERVISOR
Do not write a supervisor without having read 1 or 2 publications from him/her. They do not take you seriously if you are not already familiar with their research focus (I knew these before I entered the game and all the Profs I have met here also reaffirmed that). When writing them an email, use a catchy subject like "PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENT, FALL 2050" or "PROSPECTIVE Ph.D. STUDENT (ALREADY APPLIED), FALL, 2024" If your proposed school demands that you apply before securing supervisors. Please note the keywords in the subject!.

DON'T YOU EVER USE GENERIC EMAIL! All emails sent to each Prof. must be constructed personally for them because they always detect and detest copy and paste generic email. The body of the email should have the following:

Dear Prof. Xyz,
Your name? graduate of what, and where? your grades; overall and last two academic years in percentage (No Prof. has time to be converting your grades), your interests in relation to the research focus of the Prof.

What you read about the Prof's paper and how it captured your interests, what point and suggestion were you able to derive from the research you read? your own research interests and how it relates to that of the Prof.

Let him know you met the requirement for admission (you must have checked the school portal to know if you meet admission requirements) and when you intend to resume. Ask him about the possibilities. Tell him you have attached a CV, Transcript, and Certificate.

Thank him/her for the time

Sincerely,
Your name
(Do not put your number, they will never call you, and stop putting your email here, it is already on the mail you sent)

WHEN TO SEND THE EMAIL
Always check the local time in the Prof's province and send the email in at around 8 am and 3:50 pm their local time. If they fail to respond in 5 business days, keep resending it at that interval until they reply to you.

ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS & OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULD/NOT DO
Do not talk about funding unless the Prof has accepted you. Personally, I would check the school funding package before I contact any Prof in that school because no Prof gives money from their private pocket. The minimum requirements into most graduate programs in Canada is Nigerian 2:1 (70%) and they strongly "prefer" candidates with 80% and above.

Scholarships are mostly given based on the school's provision (See program funding package on the school's portal). Most of them are merit-based, you don't have to apply as they come with your admission package. This is where your grades in last-two academic years come in. The closer it is to 100% the better. You can expect something if you hold 80% and above. If you are not clear with the conditions, you can ask the Prof. after he has accepted you.

#######################################################

I hope I have just answered some common questions, with time I can drop something about admission application. Have fun and dream big.

Sincerely,
AgroNACT

I changed career because I studied Zoology in my undergraduate and now I'm going for MSc Boreal Ecosystems and Agricultural Sciences but I explained what spurred my passion for it and courses I took relevant to the area. I'm not employed as I'm currently still doing my NYSC and didnt submit any nysc stuff.

In term of family ties, I do not have any ties as all my siblings are in the USA and Canada as I'm just the only one left here, they are already citizens of those countries and I listed all of them in the family information without hiding anything. I only used my mom who wasn't even in Nigeria as ties and I said I ll be coming back home for my marriage and I talked about employment prospects as the ties too.

The most important thing is prayer and fasting and it was my mom that did all that. I give *God all the glory*. *He is a faithful God*. All thanks to my *father's in the Lord* who saw this vision coming through for me, Qudkom, Frankrobb, Justmellow,Blema111, sterlingwaterloo and to many others I can't mention.

*I'm wishing the rest still waiting for decision a favourable outcome IJN especially my sister from another mother Mzjokky16. I love you so much you're the best*

Thank you for the robust response on how to secure a job via AIPP. We will meet at the top.
Frankrobbn1:

Thanks for the best wishes. It took me solid 4 months of persistence reading and exploring of different companies websites using the approved list of designated employers under the AIPP stream. At a time, I got discouraged as some of the companies I contacted said they weren't aware of the immigration program called - AIPP.... This kept me wondering how will they not know about the Atlantic program. Meanwhile their names were among the designated employers on the list to hire foreign employees. I knew what I wanted so I relentlessly kept on pushing without hesitation. I sought advices from some of the Indians guys on the WhatsApp group I belonged to then, they gave me tips on how to contact employers in the Altantic region and shared me some of their cover letters which all attempts proved abortive as all the employers I contacted were looking for employee with work permit within Canada. cry During my quest, I decided to build up my LinkedIn account and fortunately I got to see one of the approved companies under AIPP and their advertisement for Vacancy for over two months. shocked I said to myself let me just try this one and see if things turns out fine for me.... More like a trial!. I didn't even invest so much hope that I'll secure the job. After all, I have been getting a rejection response/mail from them all this while, therefore it's no longer a new thing to me. I braced up and contacted the company via their LinkedIn page as well as messaged them about my interest in working for the company and filling up their labour shortage. Fortunately, the company replied my message and requested that I should mail them a copy my resume and a cover letter which will detail about my vast working experience in the field and why I am fit for the job/position in their company and the contributions I'll bring to the team that will yield high productivity for the company etc...

The company reviewed my documents and sent me a mail regarding an interview.

My interview was conducted via Skype on the 21st of December, 2018. The manager of the company asked me questions about my experience and how long I have worked in that field and what is my current employment in my country of residence. Do I have my IELTS and ECA ready? Of which I sincerely told him that I don't have any yet but will get it done as soon as I have successfully secured the job offer. The manager was a jovial and very nice person. I must say he is very understandable and he said "That's okay, but you must have it so we can file for your Permanent Residence Application".... I replied with a calm voice "Sure I will".

At the end of the interview, the manager said "Congratulations" with a smile on his face that I'm now a member/employee of the organization, that i should expect further correspondence from them which entitles a signed job contract and supporting documentation regarding my employment via email. That I should endeavor to sign those forms and send it back to them ASAP, so they could begin my application for settlement plan, after which they will proceed with my provincial Endorsement and subsequently my Permanent Residence application to Canada. shocked shocked This was one of the happiest day of my life meanwhile my PR will be the best of all. grin..... The waiting is not an easy one but I believe everything will work out in due time and I'll receive a PPR in few months to come grin

I hope this helps. My advice is you keep on pushing and never relent. Someday you will find your dream employer and they will accept your application with open arms.

I wish you all the very best.
