Long before now, we never heard frequent cases of children struggling to sleep or having sleep-related issues. But now, many young people including under-aged complain of not being able to sleep well at night. So, what could the problem be? kids

No doubt, a lot of things have changed and will continue to change especially with the advent and ever-evolving use of technology. Kids and adults alike now spend time on their gadget, unfortunately, some parents provide children with gadget and fail to monitor how their under-aged kids access these gadgets.

Encouraging a child to go to sleep at a sensible hour is far easier said than done. Recent research revealed that an increasing number of young people are suffering from sleep glitches as a result of going on social media just before bedtime. While it may be difficult to impose a curfew on digital devices, there are a number of methods that parents and wards can utilize to help maintain a healthy sleep life for their kids. According to sleep experts, below are 5 things you can do to help your kids get to bed in good time.

Know when to retrieve electronic devices
The number of youngsters under the age of 16 being diagnosed with sleep disorders has risen drastically over the past few years, as outlined by data collated by NHS Digital and analyzed by The Guardian.

One way that adults can help to rectify this issue is by ensuring that children don’t use electronic devices just before they hit the hay. Setting rules for your kids can help them become more disciplined, however, we are not asking you to be overly rigid with your kids. Most times, when you instruct kids, they want to know why they should comply. You can simply explain to them the benefits of putting away gadget hours before bedtime, and the advantages this adds to their health.

According to Neil Robinson, sleep expert for Sealy UK, “Although it may be tempting to let them have some downtime in front of the TV or an iPad, the blue light emitted from the screens of these devices can have a negative impact on your child’s sleep, as it impacts on levels of melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone,”

Therefore, provide the right lighting in your kid’s room and create a technology-free environment at least 30 minutes before kids (and adult) bedtime helps a lot. This can help to create a sleep-friendly zone as well maintain a healthy sleep life.

Fix a strict bedtime
Children and even adults may struggle to sleep soundly if they’re going to bed at different times every night. That is why it’s important to set a nighttime and morning routine that they can follow, with your support and help, this is attainable.

Ockwell-Smith, an expert in the field states “some parents put their children to bed earlier than they need to. At each age, there is a range of acceptability when it comes to the amount of sleep needed.” She further recommends between 9-16 hours sleep in a 24-hour period for toddlers, 8-14 hours sleep for preschoolers, 7-13 hours sleep for kids between ages 5- 11, and 6-12 hours of sleep for teenagers.

As a parent, one of the best things you can do for your kids is to understand their biological sleep needs at each age and ensure they do not sleep longer than necessary. Always try to set a balance, we believe this is not too much for the child you love.

Create a peaceful environment
One of the ways to create a peaceful environment for children is by encouraging them to use their imagination while they lay on their bed. However, this is dependent on the age of your kids. Sometimes, when you lay kids to bed and ask them to close their eyes, they may say “The sleep is not coming.”

Well, you could tell the child to imagine their favorite holiday or place they would love to visit, this way, he or she becomes settled and comfortable in bed. Once the lights are off, you are can be assured that your child is guaranteed to sleep soundly. On the other hand, a bath before bedtime can regulate body temperature, and promote sleep quality like magic.

Be concerned about what they eat
It is not advisable for children to eat too much sugary snacks just before bedtime, as this can lead to a sudden spike in their energy levels. However, sugary foods are not the only varieties that are best avoided before bedtime.

If your kids must eat after dinner, experts recommend allowing them to eat snacks such as whole-grain toast, an apple, or crackers around 45 minutes before bed so that they don’t go to bed hungry or overly energetic.

A comfortable bed is key
If your child is having frequent issues with falling asleep at night, then you should pay attention to your child’s mattress. Notably, the type of mattress that a child needs in order to achieve a restful night’s sleep may differ from the one needed by an adult.

Research has shown that most adults enjoy a mattress with a soft or medium-soft comfort while kids on the other hand usually require a firm mattress. This is because their growing bodies need extra support as they mature. In addition to a comfortable mattress, it’s also important to take note of the thickness of the child’s duvet, as they may feel uncomfortably hot if the duvet is too thick.

Finally, parents need to pay attention to their kids’ health to know if or not they have allergies. In this case, a child with allergies would require pillows and duvets that are hypoallergenic in order to be able to sleep well.

We easily talk about food, fashion, our jobs, and many other things as they affect us. But do we ever have deep talks about mattresses or is that reserved for those in the industry? Well, it’s understandable that we have various needs at different times. Most likely, when we dearly have need for a mattress, we’d talk about it. However, the discourse here is about how a lot of us never see the need to give our choice of mattress proper attention or consideration. No doubt, the only time we really want to talk about our mattress is when we think we need a change.

Of course, all mattresses do not have the same lifespan, the average lifespan of a good mattress is about 10 -15 years. Interestingly, sleeping on a quality mattress has certainly improved my health just the way an apple a day keeps me away from the doctor.

• If your mattress always sinks at the center and you don't feel yourself on it, I think it’s time for a new one.
• Do you see your keen cap imprint on your current mattress? Other parts of your body can leave traces on your mattress too, when this is
happening, there's a need for another one.
• How about you trying rolling over the bed? If you find out a part is high and another low, then it just might the moment for a new mattress.

Sometimes this year, I realize I needed to change my mattress and when I arrived at the store; a very proper and nice question was thrown at me. Do you want to guess the question? Of course, it was the question of my mattress size. I was surprised when I heard myself say "I think its 6 by 4" the long and short is, I wasn't very sure like I've never really been sure.

So, I started looking for a size that I felt was the same as the mattress frame I have. Come to think of it, do you know that knowing your mattress size will always save you the stress of making a wrong purchase?
It is interesting how we think we know our mattress measurement until we are confronted with the question. So, here is a simple chat I found from WincoFoam.com that would help you know your mattress size Just in case you want to make a new purchase.

Also, if you don't have a measuring tape, it's not a big deal! You can use your Naira notes to check for measurement, just ensure you have at least enough cash to do this simple arithmetic.
