Health / Mattress Swap: The Best Way You Can Get Value Off an Old Mattress In Nigeria by Y4all: 10:05am On Jun 24, 2021
Ever use the mattress swap service before? Having your old mattress collect dust and occupy valuable space in your house could pose a threat to your health. First, you could have dust allergies such as asthma attacks, dermatitis, wheezing, bronchial infections and so forth. Second, hanging on to an old mattress can clutter up the little or valuable space you have in your home. This in turn will make your home look clumsy and unkempt.  Also, it could become a hideout for rodents, pests and other harmful insects.  However, what’s more hazardous is throwing your mattress away.  Dumping your old mattress in a landfill space makes you a culprit of global warming and environmental degradation that is bedeviling our world. There is therefore need to preserve our society and make it safer for the next generations by exploring alternative methods of getting rid of your old mattresses.

Wondering if your old mattress could be of any value to you? Certainly! Mattress swapping is one of the most profitable alternatives of discarding your old mattress. This is popularly known as mattress recycling service. Interestingly, all brands of mattress can be swapped by a mattress manufacturer that offers the mattress swap service. Unfortunately, it’s rare to find a mattress brand that offers the mattress swap service in Nigeria. However, Winco Foam is renowned for this service. Mattress Swapping is a fast and easy way to get rid of your old mattress.

HOW MATTRESS SWAPPING WORKS
The goal of the mattress swapping is to help create a cleaner and healthier environment for all. That is to say, it’s an effort towards environmental sustainability. So, rather than pollute the environment by thrashing your mattress in a refuse site or dump it at home at the expense of your health, you can have it recycled at an exchange rate.
Here’s how it work:

The mattress company checks your mattress for stain, wetness or bedbug infestation, if clear,
Your old mattress will be measured to ascertain its weight in Kilograms
You would be offered a new mattress or any other bedding product worth the value of your old mattress
While the old mattress is carted away for recycling.
[i]All brands of mattress can be swapped.[/b]

Note that you are at leverage to opt for another mattress or other bedding product. However, you would be charged an additional fee if your choice mattress cost more than the value of your old mattress.

4 BENEFITS OF MATTRESS SWAPPING

Mattress Swapping is Cost Effective
Even though you won’t be given cash for an exchange, yet you can save money by swapping your old mattress for a new one. As a result, you could channel your money into getting a quality pillow or other bedding products. Again, even if the value of your old mattress does not measure up with the price of your preferred mattress, you’d still save money by adding some amount to get your desired mattress. Great isn’t it?

More Space and less Clutters
If you have to dump your old mattress somewhere in the room or even at the stores, then you don’t need it. Swapping your old mattress will help you declutter your home, this will allow for better ventilation and a better room temperature promoting quality sleep.

Upgraded comfort
The expected lifespan of a mattress is 10years, although depending on the make of the mattress. However, sometimes we use our mattress longer than the expected lifespan. Other times, we manage our old mattresses despite the discomfort we feel because we do not have the money to buy a new one. The mattress swapping option will help you improve your comfort by exchanging your worn out or uncomfortable mattress for a new one.

The wrong mattress will definitely shift ones waist as well as the spine. Orthopedic mattress is still the best.

Orthopedic mattresses are the best but they are not designed for everyone. However, you can look up for https://www.wincofoam.com/product/orthopedic/ here. They are really affordable with 10years warranty and free 14 night trial.

Lol. We kind of have similar problems.

No matter how early i sleep, if I wake up and go back to sleep even for 30mins, it would seem like i have not slept at all. I actually googled this problem, and the solution was , "once you wake up don't go back to sleep again".

It is nice solution but sometimes i wake up an hour or an hour 30 mins earlier than i am supposed to wake up so i just have to go back to sleep. Which now makes it difficult to get up from my bed.
However, i also noticed that if I sleep in the afternoon(siesta) for an hour and some minutes, then i would not have much problem waking up even after sleeping back.

Another thing again, the quality of your mattress matters a lot. There are some mattresses(soft mattresses) that would make you weak no matter how long you have slept.

So try and understand your sleep patterns, and know if your mattress is contributing to your discomfort and remember once you're awake don't sleep back. wink

Thanks for the feedback. We always recommend the mattress-topper for mattresses that are too soft, so you can save money rather than buying a new mattress. However, if you want to get a new mattress, we suggest you get the Winco Foam Dual sided mattress, so you can flip to the hard side or soft side as determined by your sleep need) , the Winco Foam Semi Orthopedic(Grandeur mattress) or the Winco Foam Orthopedic mattress.

My issue is early to bed, early to rise literally....

Sleeping 12am - 7am would do my body good than 8pm - 4am (which is when I would likely wake up when I sleep that early).

And if I sleep for 8hrs, wake up, and sleep additional two hours, the first 8 hrs is cancelled and I only slept for two hours. cry

Interesting...this means your body internal clock has mastered your bedtime of 12am-7am. We would recommend you stick to it if it does not affect your productivity. However, you can reschedule your bedtime and allow your body some time to adjust.

Family / What Is Edge Support In A Mattress? by Y4all: 5:39pm On Apr 30, 2021
There are many factors to consider when shopping for a new mattress; factors like brand name, feel of the mattress, materials used to make it, size and sometimes even a warranty. But there is one factor many people do not think to consider when shopping for a new mattress and that is edge support.

WHAT IS EDGE SUPPORT?

Edge support is the amount of resistance a mattress provides around the edges. It is important for two main reasons: #1: More edge support means less sagging and falling towards the edge. #2: edge support provides stable support to on the side of the bed, which is important for those with hip or joint pain or have a hard time getting up from a low position.

Edge support what prevents you from rolling off the bed or slide off the edge of the mattress as you tie your shoe in the morning, this is a few reasons why edge support matter.

WHY EDGE SUPPORT?

Edge support will benefit a lot of people but the plus-size community stands to gain a lot from proper edge support, as it guarantees security while sleeping, stable edge seating, more room to sleep in, durability of the mattress and finally ensures proper comfort.

Security while sleeping

Ever rolled off the bed while you slept? Nothing is more embarrassing than that. A good edge support keeps you securely in place, even when you sleep close to the edge. A firm edge acts as an extra barrier to ensure your safety if you toss and turn.

Stable edge seating

Asides from sleeping, a good number of people sit in bed, be it watching your favorite show on TV, rummaging through the side table, reading a book or even praying; edge support provides a stable, long-lasting surface for you to perform these activities. And like we have mentioned, edge support is particularly great for people with chronic hip or joint pain who have a hard time getting up from low positions.

Increased surface area

A firm all round sleep surface gives you more space on the mattress. A strong edge support increases the sleeping surface by 20%, this is great for people who tend to turn and toss when they sleep. It is also important for partners, as it gives both more room to sleep in.

Comfort and Longevity

Edge support makes mattresses more comfortable and elongates the life span of your mattress.

CONCLUSION

Not all mattresses have great edge support but orthopedic mattresses, few foam mattresses (depending on its densities) and some spring mattresses also have great edge support.
Family / Health Benefits Of Orthopedic Mattress Topper by Y4all: 10:25am On Apr 28, 2021
WHAT IS A MATTRESS TOPPER?

A mattress topper is a removable layer that is strapped on top of a mattress to provide cushioning and support. It is an extension to the mattress.
As a mattress accessory, the topper is a thin layer of foam measuring between 2" to 3" that can be made from different materials, depending on the sleep need of the user, they come in various sizes.
A topper could be soft, medium soft or very firm.

ORTHOPEDIC MATTRESS TOPPER
Like the name suggests, the orthopedic topper is made from bonded, crushed foam crumbs and is designed to offer you a firm sleep surface, adequate support and proper spinal alignment.

WHY AN ORTHOPEDIC TOPPER?
Let us suppose your current mattress does offer the kind of firm support and spinal alignment your sleep needs desire, the orthopedic mattress topper is a cheaper option to buying a new orthopedic mattress. It would ideally offer you all the benefits of sleeping on an orthopedic mattress and the best part is you can take off the topper if you so desire and go back to sleeping on a soft surface.
Most toppers come with a strap that goes over and under a mattress, strapping it firmly into place.

BENEFITS AN ORTHOPEDIC TOPPER
1. Relieves body pain
2. It helps you sleep better
3. It helps you maintain a better posture
4. An orthopedic topper will last a long time
5. They are firm.
6. They offer adequate pressure relief for joints and nerves.

Health / Falling Asleep To Your Favorite Tv Show Might Not Be A Good Idea by Y4all: 9:50am On Apr 27, 2021
There is a television set in a good number of bedrooms these days and they have become a part of our nightly rituals, in fact aside from literature and music, TV is one of the common ways people often try to use to put themselves to sleep. Research has however suggested that this practice is not right.

In a previous article we talked about how blue light affects your circadian rhythm, now we will focus on what falling asleep to your favorite show on Zee world could be doing to your body.

A report published by JAMA Internal Medicine postulated that sleeping with the TV on in your bedroom “may be a risk factor for weight gain, overweight, and obesity.” They even suggested that reducing a person’s exposure to artificial light at night could “be a useful intervention for obesity prevention.”

Sleep junkie.com suggests that you use electronics for at least two hours before bed, due to the effects of the blue light. The blue light stimulates the brain and makes you feel alert; it even elevates your body temperature and heart rate, which is why they are fine in the morning or through the day.

Dr. Chris Brantner stated that tweaking your pre-sleep TV habits may lessen their negative effects. He said that watching TV on an actual television-as opposed to electronic devices like tablets and phones that re right in your face may lessen the effects of blue light.

If you must have a TV on, then turn away from the light and listen only to the audio; which might be hard to do if you are watching a movie or your favorite TV show. You could also set your TV to auto-turn off after at a certain time in order to cut out light after you got to sleep.

Endeavor not to become too dependent on your TV as a sleep aid, because it may make it difficult for you to fall asleep without it, especially when you are far from home or in places where you do not have easy access to a TV.

Instead of TV before bed, you could try meditative activities, reading or even praying. Having a lot of sleep-promoting options can better help you become too dependent on one habit.

Bottom line

Using your TV as a means of trying to catch a shut eye might not be the best way to fall asleep but it beats having full blown episodes of sleep deprivation.

Health / Impact Of Sleep On Your Immune System by Y4all: 11:42am On Apr 24, 2021
The importance of sleep in our lives cannot be understated; extensive research over the years has highlighted the relationship between sleep, our physical health and virtually every system of the body.

The immune system is very critical to overall health, it is fundamental to healing wounds, warding of infections and protecting against life threatening diseases/illnesses. There is need to have a strong immune system, especially in the current pandemic.

When you sleep, your immune releases proteins called cytokines, some of which helps you sleep better. Cytokines will increase when you have an infection or inflammation, or when you are under stress. Sleep deprivation may decrease the production of cytokines, antibodies and cells.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SLEEP AND YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Getting sufficient hours of quality sleep improves your defense system; this system features strong innate and adoptive immunity, efficient response to vaccines and less severe allergic reactions. Sleep is an essential part of building up the body’s Immunity and making sure it is operating at full capacity when healthy.

On the other hand, serious sleep problems can interfere with the healthy functioning of the immune system.

According to Dr. Teofilo Lee-Chiong (https://www.nationaljewish.org/doctors-departments/providers/physicians/teofilo-l-lee-chiong-jr), during these uncertain times, while the world is battling an infectious disease, it is essential to optimize sleep to ensure the immune system remains strong, and to support mental well-being. He suggests:

Maintaining a regular bedtime and waking time. Schedule a protected time for sleep, including an anchor period (i.e., same 4-6 hours regardless of schedule).
Napping to reduce daytime fatigue but not regularly doing to replace a restful night sleep.
Cutting down on alcoholic beverages, energy drinks and foods containing caffeine, such as dark chocolate, at night.
Limiting the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, candies and desserts that can worsen sleep quality.
Keeping the sleep environment comfortable, dark, quiet, and cool.

FINALLY

According to The National Sleep, the data below reflects the ideal amount of sleep in normal circumstances; however, there are certain cases when people need more sleep, for example, while recovering from illness, jet lag, radical time zone shift, etc.

Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours
Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
Preschoolers (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
School-age children (6-13 years): 9-11 hours
Teenagers (14-17 years): 8-10 hours
Younger adults (18-25 years): 7-9 hours
Adults (26-64 years): 7-9 hours
Older adults (65years and above): 7-8 hours

Health / Pow: Mattress Sanitation by Y4all: 2:35pm On Apr 20, 2021
Humans shed about 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute of every day. So in the time it took you to read this far, you probably have shed 40,000 cells. That is almost 9 pounds (4kg) of cells every year! The average expected lifespan of a Nigerian as of 2018 according to Google is 54.33 years, which means a person sheds 488.97 pounds in their life span!
Dust mites are bugs that are extremely tiny and invisible to the naked eyes and belong to the spider family. They live in house dust and feed on dead skin cells. Dust mites can survive in all climates and at most altitudes and thrive in warm environments.
Male dust mites can live over a month, while a female dust mite can live up to 90 days.
Dust mites are one of the most common allergy and asthma triggers that lurk inside your own home. They are not to be confused with bed bugs; which are a separate species that leaves visible bite marks on your body, dust mites on the other hand can cause rashes, sneezing and postnasal drip.
If you have continuous allergy symptoms throughout the year, it may be worth talking to a doctor about possible dust mite allergies. While difficult to get rid of completely, there are ways you can manage dust mite populations in your home while also treating your allergies

MATTRESS SANITATION PROCESS
Dust mites gravitate towards areas of the home where they are likely to encounter the most dead skin cells, 1.5 grams of dead skin cells can feed up to one million dust mites at a time. Areas like the bedding, carpet, rugs and even stuffed animals are some of the most common habitats of dust mites.
With the Winco Hygiene, there is literally no surface that cannot be treated, whether it is an upholstered item, carpeted area, curtains or drapes, stuffed toys, pillows and any other porous surface that collects contamination in the typical house or multi-bed facility.
The mattress sanitation process involves the use of a powerful, hand-held UV-C portable light that is designed to treat hard surfaces and difficult to reach areas. The mattress sanitation process combines unsuppressed suction with a powerful, electronically regulated UV-C germicidal light. You could call it a vacuum on steroids, as it not only removes all harmful contaminants, but it sterilizes the areas being treated as well.
Ultraviolet C irradiation is lethal to an array of organisms by damaging their nucleic acids (DNA and RNA).
This machine is designed to capture and retain 99-97% of contaminants present as small as 0.3 microns. To put that in context, 0.3 microns is equal to1/600h of the diameter of a typical human hair.
The mattress sanitation process can be used to kill bacteria, common viruses, pollen, dust mites and their eggs, spider mites, fleas and flea eggs, lice, mold and fungal spores and a long list of other contaminants that are harmful to everyone, not just allergy sufferers.

Health / Sleep And Depression by Y4all: 5:18pm On Apr 19, 2021
Sleep, depression and other mental disorders are often linked to each other. It is healthy to get a good night's sleep, yet for many people it is a struggle getting proper sleep. Sometimes the problem could be physical, like the noisy, mosquito-infested world around us. Other times it could something broken inside you, damage to your mental or physical health can prevent you sleeping well.

If you do not get the right amount of quality sleep, it comes to bear on your mental health.

DEPRESSION

Depression is a constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest, which stops you doing your normal activities. Different types of depression exist, with symptoms ranging from relatively minor to severe. Generally, depression does not result from a single event, but from a mix of events and factors. (Better health)

Research has shown that there is a connection between poor sleep and depression, with result showing a significant number of people who had poor sleep hygiene or suffered some form of mental disorders like insomnia and restless leg syndrome suffered some form of depression.

WHY IS SLEEP SO IMPORTANT?

Just like a computer needs to reboot to perform better, sleep is a restorative state. However a disruption or inadequacy of sleep can lead to increased tension, vigilance and irritability.

Physical or emotional trauma and other medical problems can trigger sleep disturbances. Poor sleep can lead to fatigue. This in turn leads you exercising less and leads to a decline in your fitness level. This will lead eventually to a vicious cycle of inactivity and disturbed sleep which causes both physical and mood-related symptoms.

SLEEP AND MENTAL HEALTH LIFESTYLE CHANGES

In some cases the treatment recommended for common sleep problems, the fundamentals are a combination of lifestyle changes, behavioral strategies, psychotherapy and drugs if necessary.

Lifestyle changes:  Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine can contribute to poor health. Alcohol initially depresses the nervous system, which helps people fall asleep, but the effects eventually wear off in a few hours and people wake up. Nicotine is a stimulant which speeds up your heartrate and thinking. Giving these substances up is a step towards getting a good night's rest. They should be avoided before bed time.

Physical activity: Regular exercise and aerobic activity helps people fall asleep faster; it will also help you achieve deeper, uninterrupted sleep.

Sleep hygiene: Many experts believe that people learn insomnia, and can learn how to sleep better. Good "sleep hygiene" is the term often used to include tips like maintaining a regular sleep-and-wake schedule, using the bedroom only for sleeping or sex, and keeping the bedroom dark and free of distractions like the computer or television. Some experts also recommend sleep retraining: staying awake longer in order to ensure sleep is more restful.

Relaxation technique: meditation, deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation can counter anxiety and racing thoughts.

Cognitive behavioral therapy: Because people with insomnia tend to become preoccupied with not falling asleep, cognitive behavioral techniques help them to change negative expectations and try to build more confidence that they can have a good night's sleep. These techniques can also help to change the "blame game" of attributing every personal problem during the day on lack of sleep.

Health / Eucalyptus: A Natural Way To Improve Your Sleep by Y4all: 5:00pm On Apr 09, 2021
“I see you don’t chase dreams, you live in them.”

“One of the virtues of never sleeping Mr. Bond, I have to live my dreams. Besides, there’s plenty of time to sleep when you are dead.”

This conversation was from the 2002 James Bond movie “Die Another Day” where the movie villain was discrediting the need for a quality sleep, which unfortunately seems to be the ethos of the jet-age.

In a this fast paced world of ours, the importance of sleep cannot be overemphasized as research has shown that sleep, memory, creativity and concentration are all connected. This explains why a lot of fortune 500 companies like Google allow their employees to sleep on the job when they have to. In fact in Japan it is culturally accepted to sleep on duty.

We have established that sleep is important, so how do you make sure you want to get the best out of your sleep time? Have you tried eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus, is a called “nkwuishi” in the Igbo dialect and “mai” in Hausa. It is a tree that has oil that has major medicinal abilities, if you are experiencing restlessness, dizziness and narcolepsy, this oil is a natural remedy.

The eucalyptus oil is also known to relieve sleep apnea; when inhaled (its scent), it can open blockages in your airways. Being a natural source of decongestion, it helps remove phlegm thus aiding the sleep process. It can also be used to treat sinus.

Eucalyptus can also:

Ease mental exhaustion
Cure insomnia
Calms the nerve in cases of narcolepsy
It is also an immune stimulant
Eucalyptus is antiviral (in this COVID times this is very important)
They have antibacterial attributes

There are many natural sleep problem remedies all around us and the eucalyptus is one of them, you could buy already refined bottles in stores around you or you could brew them locally.

Health / How A Dark Room And A Better Mattress Can Improve Your Sleep by Y4all: 5:13pm On Apr 08, 2021
Before the invention of electricity, man slept and woke up to the rising and setting of the sun, now the relationship between light and sleep has become more complex, especially with lights in our homes, electronic devices and light pollution outside.
Every human has an internal clock called the circadian rhythm; which controls our natural sleep-wake cycle. The Circadian rhythm cues us to feel awake during the day and sleepy at night.
Light is a major determinant in getting ready for sleep.
Being in a fully lit room before sleep will lead to shortened and delayed production of melatonin; a chemical which aids the sleep process, the use of electronic devices before bed has been linked with sleep issues such as depression, anxiety and obesity, all of which is detrimental to your sleep quality.

Tips for making your room dark
Ideally, sleeping in the dark is the best for a quality sleep but in reality most people sleep in rooms filled with artificial light that can seriously harm their sleep. When it gets dark, your body starts to produce a hormone known as melatonin; which makes you sleepy and tells your body it is time to shut down.
The thing is, melatonin production is triggered by darker light observed through the optical nerve. It sends a message to the pineal gland that increases its production to make you fall asleep. However, with artificial light from cell phones, televisions and laptop screens, ambient light from outside, flickering lights from alarm systems, etc., the release of melatonin is reduced. This means you will struggle to fall asleep as your environment is just too bright-the bed guy
Creating a proper atmosphere that supports and enhances sleep is a key part of developing proper sleep hygiene. To do that you have to:

1. Cover windows, possibly with thick curtains or very good blinds.
2. Ensure the gap between the door and the floor is not letting in any lights, turn off hallway lights.
3. Wear eye masks.
4. Stow away electronics.
5. If you must use light at night, make sure they are dim.

Change your mattress for better sleep
You might not know it but your mattress could be a key reason why you are not getting quality sleep; anything from not getting proper support for your body, imbedded allergens in your mattress to something as simple as using the wrong mattress could be the reason, amongst others.
A comfortable mattress will support your knees, hips, and spine and allow you sleep without straining or putting pressure on any points.

Here is how to know if you need a new mattress:
1. If your mattress takes time to regain its proper shape after you rise.
2. When your mattress is sagging.
3. When you wake up with pain and ache despite sleeping on a new mattress, you might need to get the right mattress for your body weight.
4. When the fabric of your mattress is worn, it makes it easier for dust and other microscopic organisms to imbed themselves therein.
Invest in a new mattress and get a professional to help you find the best one to fit your body's morphology. If you feel comfortable the second you climb into bed and your room is dark when you turn off the light, a good night's sleep is not far away. Improve your sleep the easy way.

Health / What Is It About A Memory Pillow? by Y4all: 11:57am On Apr 07, 2021
Often times, people wonder why it is called “memory foam”, they ask questions like, does it improve your memory, does it retain your dreams or does it relieve you of bad memories?

Fortunately, it is none of that, a memory pillow is called that because of the nature of the materials used to make it and how your body conforms to it. Memory foam is known for its ability to both conform to the shape of your head and support it. This prevents your head from sinking in too deeply like it would in a regular pillow. It's made to distribute weight evenly, avoiding unnecessary strain on the neck and spine.

Basically, it is called a memory pillow because when you rise, the pillow retains the shape of your neck and head for a moment before it regains its original shape. Like the saying goes; "If you make a lasting impression, you leave a lasting memory"

What is in a memory pillow?

Memory foam consists mainly of polyurethane as well as additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. It is often referred to as "viscoelastic" polyurethane foam, or low-resilience polyurethane foam (LRPu). The foam bubbles or 'cells' are open, effectively creating a matrix through which air can move.

It is this elastic nature of the memory pillow that makes it amenable and easy to mold to the shape of your head, aiding in the proper posture and alignment of your spine.

Pros and cons of a memory pillow

Because sleep is subjective, we cannot categorically tell you why you should pick one type of mattress over the other, because we all measure a good night's sleep differently. However there are some common key benefits of a memory pillow.

Pros:

Its viscoelastic nature, it uses your heat and body pressure to form to your exact shape. This make sleeping easier as the mattress is perfectly indented to suit your body; sleeping on a natural curve is good for your spine and promotes lumbar support.
If you have arthritis or joint pain, then memory foam would be great for you.

They are hypoallergenic, because it has a very dense structure which is good for reducing the number of allergens that can build up.

Cons:

Because of its dense nature memory mattresses can be very heavy; fortunately pillows are not cut as big as mattresses.
The memory pillow can retain heat, which means that during the warm months, sleep might become overheated and uncomfortable.
They are not water resistant and water can hasten its degradation. It can also make it difficult to clean.
If you are someone who changes position a lot at night, you might find a memory pillow difficult to use as it takes some time to adjust from one position to the next. It will cradle your head and neck but not the right away.
It is pricey.
At the beginning of its life, foam products such as this sometimes produce a chemical-like smell. This is referred to as off-gassing, and it's caused by VOCs, which are often found in any type of manufactured product with foam, plastic, or thick adhesives. This can be irritating to sleepers who have sensitive noses. The distinctive smell can sometimes last for several weeks until it wears off. But often it only requires a few days to air out.
