Nairaland GeneralFarmers Protest Over Government Airport Project In Ekiti by Yarnvibes(op): 5:39pm On Jan 20, 2016
https://cdn.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/ekiti.jpg

Farmers in Ekiti state, on Wednesday, staged a protest against what they called ‘illegal acquisition of their farmlands and unlawful destruction of economic trees and crops,” which came as a result of the airport project embarked upon by the state government.

The farmers from five communities: Igbemo, Igbogun, Aso, Iwajo and Ijan, that covered three local government areas of Ado, Gbonyin and Irepodun/Ifelodun, claimed that at least 10 farmers including three women have died of shock over what they called “huge economic loss” resulting from the destruction of their farms.

They stormed the project site and urged Governor Ayo Fayose to immediately stop work on the project in respect of the suit they had filed in court.

Displaying placards, the protesters claimed that they did not receive any valid notice before government sent bulldozers to destroy their farms.

They said they do not need any compensation but restoration of their land.

Some of their placards read: “Gov Fayose, Please Leave Us Alone, Don’t Damage Our Life,” “This Land Is The Major Cocoa Plantation, Please No Trespass,” “Please Relocate Your Airport to Government Forest,” “We All Say No To Illegal Airport Project,” “Iwajo, Aso Say No To Illegal Airport,” and “Igbogun Cries Over Illegal Destruction of Our Property.”

Describing the acquisition of their land as “fraudulent, wicked, callous and illegal,” the farmers alleged that government surveyors and other officials come to their land from time to time to steal farm produce including cocoa, cocoyam, yam and banana.

PoliticsRotimi Amaechi Exposes Massive Fraud In NIMASA by Yarnvibes(op): 11:21am On Jan 20, 2016
The minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has disclosed how an unnamed investor flees from Nigeria after collecting N36 billion during the administration of the immediate past president Goodluck Jonathan.

The Nation reported that the fund was paid from the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF), which indigenous ship owner last year asked Amaechi and acting Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) director-general Haruna Baba Jauro.

The CVFF was created by the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act, 2003 to promote ship acquisition by supporting ship owners.

Section 42, Part VIII of Section 44 of the Act empowers NIMASA to collect and administer the fund, under guidelines by the Minister of Transport, after approval by the National Assembly.

The fund was established to boost local content in the shipping industry.

The minister made this disclosure on Tuesday, January 19, when he appeared before the Senate committee on Marine Transport, but failed to mention the name of the investor.

Amaechi added that about 300 billion was released to encourage investors in the maritime sector by the last administration noting that some of the fund went down the drain.

He said: “In fact, there is a particular man who collected N32billion and left the country. I don’t think that the Federal Government needed to release N52bn to investors in the maritime industry.

“What we are considering is to facilitate a partnership arrangement between the operators and foreign investors in which case we can support Nigerians who had shown serious interest in the business with about 40 percent of the investment while their foreign partners bring 60 percent. That will assure us that we would recoup our investment.

“One of those who collected the aviation bailout who has done nothing with the money is walking freely on the streets of Nigeria; his airline is dead and he did not even deem it fit to inform the ministry.

“I am protecting the maritime funds and we could only disburse it after we have seen the President, the foreign investors who will partner with the Nigerian investors that meet our guidelines. We have the N52bn in the Treasury Single Account (TSA) of NIMASA.”

Ameachi warned that NIMASA may be scrapped as a result of the massive fraud in the firm.

He further stated that the federal government might be force to approach the Nation al Assembly to repeal the Act establishing NIMASA, if its management fails to justify the utilization of the huge resources at its disposal.

The minister decries the wastefulness of NIMASA saying that there nothing to show for the N63billion revenue of generated in 2015.

Amaechi said: “Currently, the way NIMASA is, if you look at it very well, it was worse in the last administration. It was as if it was established just for the purpose of collecting money and nothing more. What we need to do is to ensure that NIMASA discharges its core responsibilities.

“If NIMASA outsources its core responsibility, then it has no business existing. If it is just to collect money from individuals, anybody can do that.
We can hire a tax collector to collect money from maritime operators on behalf of Federal Ministry of transport.

“So, it is either NIMASA sits up and carries out its own responsibility or we come to the National Assembly to repeal the Act setting it up and allow the department of marine security in the ministry of transportation to discharge the responsibility currently being discharged by NIMASA.

“We are not going ahead with the university project proposed by NIMASA because we have an institution in Oron, we have Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria, and we have the Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria which we could upgrade to a University status and NIMASA is proposing to build a new one.

“Who will attend the University? How many parents will allow their children to go to such place where it proposes to site the University? What is the aim of the University that we cannot achieve in Oron where they have the entire necessary infrastructure.

“I don’t think we are proceeding with the university being proposed by NIMASA because it is a waste of resources, and unfortunately a lot of money had already been released for the University project hence there is no structure on ground but just the feasibility study.

“Whoever that is holding on to the money should better return it. The Chinese company contracted confirmed that only the feasibility study was in place.”

Meanwhile, a prosecution witness had told a federal high court about how his account was credited with N546.8million by an official NIMASA.

Chukwuemeka Benjamin Onuoha, a fashion designer, made the shocking revelation during the trial of former NIMASA boss Patrick Akpobolokemi over alleged N2.6 billion theft.

CrimeThree Arrested In Ekiti For Stealing 17 Goats by Yarnvibes(op): 8:15am On Jan 18, 2016
https://www.sirkenayo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/goats.jpg

Three men in Ekiti State have been arrested for allegedly stealing 17 goats a few weeks after they were granted bail for a similar offense.

The gang was nabbed on Saturday at the Okeyinmi area of Ado Ekiti by some commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) and youths.

The goats were said to have been stolen at Ilupeju Ekiti in the Oye Local Government Area and were conveyed in a black Honda Accord with number plate, LAGOS AJ 798 BDG.

The suspects were said to have hit anokadarider and his passenger near Oke Ila roundabout in Okeyinmi.

Some residents, who rushed to the scene of the accident, saw the goats inside the car which aroused their suspicion.

A witness said, “On close observation, the mouths of the goats were smeared with salt and sealed with Cello tape.

“The mob descended on them after rescuing the goats. They wanted to kill them.”

They were, however, saved by policemen, who whisked them away.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, said the accident victims were receiving treatment at a hospital.

“The suspects were recently charged to court for a similar offence, but were released on bail,” he added.

PoliticsBisi Akande Warns APC Against ‘parasites’ Defecting From PDP by Yarnvibes(op): 8:06am On Jan 18, 2016
https://www.sirkenayo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/pdp-apc.jpg

Former interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, has warned the party to beware of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party in order not to allow them to kill the ruling party.

Akande, who described those defecting from other parties especially those from the PDP as parasites, said if allowed, they would destroy the APC the way they destroyed the PDP.

Speaking with journalists at his residence in Ila Orangun on Saturday on the day he clocked 77 years, Akande said parasites usually kill their hosts and look for new hosts after the initial hosts might have died.
According to him, the influx of new members to the ruling party appears good but the party must watch it so that what killed the PDP will not destroy the APC.

He said, “We in the APC should be careful, the defection is not a strange thing but I know it is always done by parasites. I have always remained in one line of politics. I have never defected and I will never defect; I will remain in that progressive polity.

“But those who are defecting from one party to the other, by nature, they are political parasites. They have killed the original host, which was the PDP, and they are now coming to the APC, which is the new host. It is for the APC to gird its own loins and prevent the parasites from killing the party, because a parasite has no root of its own but feeds on the little food that the host has.

“So, running away from the PDP to the APC looks good but the APC must be careful in dealing with those parasites.”

Akande, who is a former governor of Osun State, said he had remained in the progressives’ camp since he was introduced to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He condemned politics bereft of clear political ideology, saying that was responsible for defections.

Akande blamed the missing budget at the Senate on the indiscipline of its leadership. He said he was not surprised that such a story was coming from the Senate because its leadership was not a disciplined one.

“Only the budget of the Senate was missing, so that leaves a complication into what is happening. You know, it is borne out of the same indiscipline that led to the hijack of the National Assembly. When the foundation of an assembly is indiscipline- until you remove the cause, you will continue to have this kind of problem in your hands.

“That assembly was not constituted the way my party planned it. It was by hijack and indiscipline which constitutes the way it is. So, you can expect any kind of dissatisfactory stories from such an assembly.”

Speaking on the agitation for Biafra, the former governor recommended a dialogue for any part of the country that wanted to break away from the rest of the country.

He said he prayed that what befell the first Biafran secessionists would not befall the new set of Biafrans.

On the arms deal scam, he said, “The major problem of Nigeria is corruption. They used to do cover-up with inflated contracts and so on, but in this one, the fund was taken from the CBN and shared. It is a phenomenon in corruption in Nigeria.

“We need to be very ready for the fight against corruption, and the government alone cannot do it. Let the Nigerian people support the government in fighting corruption, because if this monster called corruption fights back, the whole country is likely to be in trouble. The extent of corruption in the country is unimaginable and very frightening.”

Akande also exonerated Governor Rauf Aregbesola from the financial crisis in the state, saying the state was not viable because of its absolute dependence on the allocation from Abuja to run its affairs.

“As of today, about 26 states cannot pay salaries. So, it is either they close shops and pack up or they negotiate with neighbouring state and merge.

They may continue to struggle. And that is what we may continue to have because until you have money, you won’t be able to run the government. Let us not forget that it is the constitution that created the basis for all these acrimony and confusion that we have,” he added.
