So far, based on concept, I am liking www.celebratingnigerianwomen.com the most ![]() Again, this is based on concept and not layout/functionality. |
I remember last year when I was asked to submit a proposal for a state government's radio station website. I found this site quite helpful in helping me determine what the whole thing entailed, including cost: http://www.streamaudio.com/site/Default.aspx Then again, considering I lost the bid, what do I know ![]() Good luck! |
Of course, fortify yourself (by that I mean, email server, find out how the hackers were able to gain access to your server so as to know what to do to prevent a future attack, etc) so that you don't have to go through all this again. I would probably die if I were ever blocked ![]() Good luck! |
the image won't display unless u use some javascript function, via an event (like onchange or whatever) to trigger once the image link is in the text field. For file type and size, I believe you do that within the php. There are functions (ready-made) that do that already. I forget which library it is, though I think it is gd extension. Check it out. Good luck! |
Cactus, I like #2 ![]() Therein lies the difference between an agbero developer and a professional. Anyone can slap things anywhere they like on a site but only a professional will know why they placed what where and have the solid argument to back it up, not minding losing the client in the process, if that is what it takes to maintain his/her integrity and reputation. |
You are still having issues with the home page - fill out all the details and hit "send". Notice that though I get the lightbox-y type box that says the email has been sent, the contents of my email still remain in each text field. Why not just make the form "disappear" and get replaced with text that says, "thank you", then make the form reappear again, with blank fields? At this point, I ask myself, "What is the purpose of this site? To prove to the world that you know ajax? To showcase your business?" I think there is ajax overkill here. You still could have shown the world that you know ajax without showing the world that you know ajax if you know what I mean - by being subtle. Or are you using a particular javascript framework for special effects and saying that is ajax? if that is the case, I withdraw all I have just said. Ajax has its place on a site - it is for retrieving and displaying data that would hitherto have required a page reload or taken too long to load. Other than that, it is overkill. Why? For one, you are flooding your server with request calls for no just reason. Also, at least based on my experience, there are many times I have tried to view an ajax site at a cybercafe, to no avail. I see on intrinsic value in seeing a "wait" animation pop up each time I click a tab. When I see that, I am wondering if something is being retrieved from the backend and if yes, what. I hope say you no vex o. Just saying it like it is. Based on the nature of the site, the only place I see ajax (and this is only if you are storing the data in a database) on your site is the "contact form". Thanks, |
geez sholyboy, I need to start hanging out with you ![]() |
he he. I thought as much. I didn't mean to be in your business but these days, I look at a site and based on a few clicks, I can pretty much deduce whether the person used a cms, a javascript framework or even a php framework. I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the info. Clean site once again. |
yeah cactus, as I tell ppl all the time, I am not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. |
goldenimp, exactly. It takes more muscles to frown that it does to laff. Sometimes I wonder if many of us wonder why some of us develop face wrinkles at a young age ![]() |
yeah cactus, that'll be day. First though, we have to find a way to convince the web populace. If they can be convinced, then demand for IE falls and they disappear ![]() I recently read a book which said something about this that makes sense - FF and Netscape beat IE until IE7 and IE8. Now that those 2 are more web standards-compliant, it is up to us the web developers to give IE a reason to either upgrade even more or let FF to run the show again. This can only be done though by **complying to web standards**. By so doing, IE is forced to upgrade in order to remain relevant. As long as we kow tow to IE, we will continue to hack our way through. Of course as they say, tis easier said than done and besides, who will be the first to "jump ship"? |
I am currently using www.servint.com and so far, customer service is good and their features are good as well. |
u shd do backwards compatibility *all* the time, within reason of course, with respect to what browsers are used the most ![]() |
A few kinks here and there but overall, looks good. What javascript framework did you use? ![]() |
Yeah, I have been pretty much doing the same thing for 10 years now. If not for the passion I have for it, I would have dumped it long time ago. I recently read an article calling what we do a mystery and as long as when you tell people you are a web developer, they ask, "what is that" or look like at you like a goat in the headlights, your job is safe. After reading that, I stopped complaining. After all, the economy is bad ![]() Theistic reference? Okay, let me rephrase, "good things don't come cheap" ![]() dhtml, I bought you: hook, line and sinker ![]() browser compatibilities? Yeah I know what you mean. I personally follow the Graded Browser Support published by YUI. Also, as of last month, I stopped supporting IE6 on personal projects. |
I personally prefer the phrase, "bloated code" cos of all the unnecessary code it tends to generate, courtesy of design view. |
I think the question was answered in my first post. Have you read it? Tried it? Succeeded? Failed? Let us know. |
remo is actually a "smart" guy - if you visit exploredelta, you would expect to see something on delta state. Rather, what you get is a series of at least 100 javascript alerts, annoying as hell. Unfortunately, I fell a victim ![]() |
It is probably a better idea to store image file paths as opposed to actual images, for storage capacity reasons. |
you uploaded the index page and already 5 pages have been indexed? hmmm. What advice do you seek exactly. Seems like you are doing well already. |
Wow! wonderful site! I especially like the part that said, "Page Load error - Address not found". Could it be you meant "exploredelta (not exporedelta)"? I will not make any assumptions until I hear from you officially ![]() |
wow dhtml! In a matter of 3 posts or so, you are sold, he he. Welcome to the club. |
Pretty good. if you hadn't said so, I wouldn't have known it was joomla. I like it when you look at a site that uses CMS and you can't tell it is one unless you are told ![]() |
he he, tech pros, even when I know it is the only/correct solution, I have always believed in always leaving myself some wiggle room for when the ITKs decide to say something like, "there is another way" ![]() |
Cactus, remember that portion of the bible that says (paraphrasing), "straight and broad (and I will add "easy" is the road that leads to hell" ![]() There was a time I would fight to the death to get people to do things the web standards way. Call it growing up, but I don't do that anymore. Why help the competition? If that is what floats your boat, I wish you well. I made the switch to CSS layout backin 2005, after a visit to Nigerian cyber cafe and seeing how slow a popular site was at the time. Also, in interviews, if you dare say you use tables for other than tabular data, you might as well kiss that job good bye. Of course you could argue that you say otherwise just to get the job but come peer review time, you go c ncho ![]() No more than 4 months ago, I did a site for a local house of reps guy in Nigeria. The site had so many tables that it took forever to open on a T1 connection in the states. The guy told me that he couldn't even open it in Nigeria and so wanted "a professional" to redesign it. To cut a long story short, the site was redesigned and all tables replaced by DIVs. The kicker? I reduced the download time from 65 seconds to 32 seconds and this was even given the fact that I used lot of jquery plugins, with the main jquery file taking up 55KB. So in conclusion, I stopped trying to convince people to make the switch. I will stick to CSS and whatever new technologies come out b4 I retire and let people use whatever they want to use and offer advice only when sought after. My motto for 2009 is "Live and Let Live". |
Some other likely reasons: 1) Chances also are that they were doing an update/upgrade. If this is the case, chances are that they didn't take into consideration that they should have done it when they have the least traffic (like in the wee hours of the morning, on certain days). 2) Could be a server hiccup, maybe caused by power failure or switching to a gen. 3) Server crash: This might have required a reboot. 4) Could be the server is shocked, courtesy of Sanusi unleashing EFCC on bank execs ![]() Be it as it may, if it happened during normal business hours and it rarely happens, I will give them a pass. Otherwise, it is inexcusable - a bank website is a mission-critical application and so they should have built in fail-safe policies and redundancies to deal with all possible issues. |
I would assume you have a local (as in, on your pc/laptop) copy of your files. Just FTP from there. If that is a problem or you have too many files, use your current cPanel to zip up the files, download that to your machine, then upload to the new host and unzip the zip file. Good luck! |
for one, a server farm. |
yeah, this is a TALL order. My gut tells me he wants "free script" that does it all for him. Not inherently bad in itself, just that the poster won't learn that way, IMHO. For instance, if it doesn't compile, he will be back to bug you even more, rather than try and figure it out himself. poster: This isn't a one-liner. It actually is very involved, including making the code secure. I would suggest you google up a tutorial. For example, I assume you already have a database set up. No database, no need coding, IMHO. Hopefully, dhtml can help. Good luck! |
