I haven't used WP that much but yes, with a tweak (not that bad ) of the htaccess file and with you updating the necessary "meta keyword" fields associated with each page, you are good to go in that arena. If you click around, say, joomla.org, you will see that the urls are SEF. Sure, maybe it might take an additional 5 minutes but considering the learning curve is very low, I don't mind it at all. Worse case, I transfer that cost to my client(s) ![]() |
1) I would probably use joomla in combination with the very popular (and free) community builder (CB). There is also a paid online community module whose name I don't recall at the moment, which I am told (naturally) is better than CB. 2) When all you have is a hammer, everything to you is a nail |
Interesting article: http://www.noupe.com/php/choosing-cms-tips.html |
poster: The red, the way you have it, doesn't rhyme well with the other colors, which is why it stands out, IMHO. Go to www.colorcombos.com, enter the hex code for your shade of red and see what other colors come up. I use that site all the time and I recommend it to you as well. If you used background colors, the change will be a piece of cake. If on the other hand, you used images, now you will see why it is best to use CSS/background colors. Good luck! |
remo, if you have been here long enough, then you probably know that I wrote a ** free ** CSS book and made it available to all, at least a year ago. In that 10-chapter book, one of the chapters deals with, guess what? CSS menus using lists. I have written so many tutorials on here that I probably could have earned myself a phD in web dev. Alas! They are not appreciated. All we care about is warring factions ![]() |
Afam, I would err on the side of him actually saying it would be too much of a task for him before we actually come to that conclusion ourselves. If it is too much of a task for him, I would expect the poster to say so and then we proceed from there. Worse case, I think I have all angles covered because I did say at the onset that he should master the art of nested lists as well as visit dynamicdrive.com for demos/downloads. |
u will need to master the art of nested lists. If you go to dynamicdrive.com, I am sure you will see many examples of navigation menus (not buttons ) on there. TO make it appear well on the top, you float the LIs.What the heck? If chelsea's site is what you need to clone, why not view the source of the file, download the css file(s) and use reverse engineering to get what you want? That is what I did on my first website ![]() Good luck! |
To answer his question simply and directly, I think he has CSV in mind. poster: When you do "save as", under the "file type" dropdown, select "CSV (Comma delimited)" and go from there. good luck! |
all part of the site that are programmed.Wow! I feel so enlightened. Let me go and consult my oracle so that I can telepathically get in your mind to know the parts that meet this criteria ![]() |
site still underconstructionI think you need to specify what you mean above. Page missing? page crashes after i hit send? etc. That way, even if you did a good job, I don't use my dust-gathering ak-47 to shoot you anyways, out of frustration ![]() |
i designed it. so so so so so so GrinThen you need to go back to programming ![]() |
smartsoft, u can run from it but you can't hide from it ![]() |
Seems like you have over-complicated things but alas, you are doing it to learn so no yawa. At least you have beaten me in something, something I don't intend to do ![]() Good job. Just keep your phone handy in case I call. Good job! |
Godmother, I don't think so. In fact, if you run a search on this board, you will see that such a thread already exists and it runs for at least 5 pages. |
I CAN NEVER BUILD A WEBSITE FOR LESS THAN 50K NOT EVEN FOR MY FATHER1) Never say never 2) Even for your father? ![]() |
he he, this is like a mechanic telling me, upfront without knowing what is wrong with my car that it will cost me 5K to fix it. First off, he doesn't know what I want done and secondly, he doesn't know if by charging 5K, he ends up losing money, profit-wise in the process. I would be very wary of such a mechanic. A professional will usually start, even when pressured by a client, by saying, "let's leave off pricing till I get the necessary info from you. My job is to make sure you get the best bang for your money" or something like that. Then you start asking, "what is this site for? Will you provide graphics? When do you need the site? etc". Let's be professional folks. It is the way you dress that you are addressed. |
If I understand what you mean, just: 1) open the index.php of the template in question 2) add the necessary calls to the jquery.js and any other related files 3) add the file names to the template.xml file 4) Start coding, within the index.php, not within the admin panel. From experience, if you don't see your changes right away, you might have to reinstall Joomla! with the updated template.xml file. In other words, sometimes, merely adding your new files to the template.xml and saving it doesn't always guarantee that it will work. Good luck! |
wow! $30? How much is hosting and domain name registration? Or is that part of the $30? |
modify the template you have and use that as the basis of future websites that you develop. The whole point of a template is that you do it once and reuse it forever. So letz say you want to concentrate on NGO websites. You come up with the code for one then reuse that, maybe changing at most, content and colors, for future ones. Make sense? |
he he, cactus, and you said you want to know what you would do, in terms of employment, if you returned to naija. I see a bright future, self-employed, in IT consultancy ![]() |
yemo, no offense but you are a stick in the mud. Your mind is made up and is unwilling to entertain other (better) suggestions. Before I go though, I will address this: In the broad sense, you cant claim to build anything from scratch. This is where my argument lies, we are all influenced everyday by things we see and hear. So in truth no idea is wholly original you can only speak of unique concepts. That you built it all by yourself will only win you praises and high scores from your lecturers but I argue that customers & their clients wont know or even care to know the difference. Thanks for finally saying, "in a broad sense". One thing some of us Nigerians are bad at is making general statements then getting angry when someone calls them on it. No idea is wholly original, "in truth"? I doubt it. Maybe it applies to you, but again, until you have seen the works of everyone out there, you can't really make this assertion. I for one, code from scratch because not all my sites are the same in terms of layout. Only lecturers will sing your praise? Again, I will assume that you aren't meeting the right clients. From my experience, clients with taste will know and care to know the difference. |
Cool. Integrate what you have with a CMS tool like Joomla! and I say, you are just about ready for graduation ![]() It was fun rubbing minds with you on this site. It looks way better than what it was in the beginning and you deserve every pat on the back you get cos of this ![]() |
Please there was never really any contest to begin with. Id just be seen as a bully.I am the boss of me. If others say you are a bully, if I don't say so, that's all that counts. I can hold my own. Again, with the broad brush painting. I didn't answer the question because its not really relevant to this topic.I think it is relevant as it has to be with mass production versus hand crafted. Granted, yes, Ferrari may be facing difficulties, it could be argued that it is due to a bad business model (a combination of factors). Like coke, you can survive on your brand name. Per Ferraris breaking down on Lagos roads, I would argue that any other car can also break down on Lagos roads. That shouldn't even be used as a yardstick because when Ferrari decided to make cars, chances are that they didn't have African, not to talk of Nigerian, roads so that is a non-issue really. I have done a few sites in my career and except for the one I am currently working on, I have never used a template (not to say it is bad). I build from scratch because I like having control over what I do. Business has been fairly good so far and I predict better years ahead. |
So we can take a break from the usual rigamarole on this board. |
Yep, I see our craft surviving for at least another 10 years - during the dot com burst, I think what e-businesses discovered is that you can't maintain economies of scale by having pple work in "silos" or doing just one thing (like say, html only) so when the economy got better, the in-thing was one person doing more than one thing thus saving the business money. My prediction with the current meltdown is that more and more, businesses will look to save even more by pushing more and more online. Sure, it will move other ppl out of work (in which case, they should start now to adapt by picking up other skill sets) but for us, that means more and more work for years to come. |
What numbers do you want. That over two-thirds of people on this planet dangle on the verge of ignorance does not prove anything! Not really but now that you bring it up, I would like the source of your latest statistic as well. being a lady I'll excuse you for saying so. Daimler AG (the company that makes Mercedes Benz) is the world's thirteenth largest car manufacturer as well as the largest truck manufacturer in the world.Your stats don't answer my question. Let me help if I may: Could it be because ferraris for the most part are not mass produced which implies better quality? Also, please treat me as a human, not a man or woman. No holds barred, no punches spared. The battle of ideas is no respecter of persons. I will therefore equate statement to this: You couldn't disprove my statement so instead you resorted to plain insults. In my case, I only use the templates for reference in my design, I don't use the actual template itself. In most cases people want an exact copy of the template, "just change the logo to my own logo & its fine" is what they tell me. And the customer is never wrong. That is good. I am doing that as well on my current project. I will however beg to differ on customer never being wrong. Again, you paint with a broad brush. I have corrected many in my career, often at the risk of losing the job but guess what? I have retained a majority of them and those who are honest will tell you that they respect what I had to say. If I lose, I walk away. There is always another day. Besides, I am not a "yes man" or "code monkey". I am a professional and one of the requirements of a professional, IMHO, is to not only tell the customer where they might be wrong but to also offer solutions. Granted, we might agree to disagree sometimes, at least, I put my concerns on the table for C(over) Y(our) A(ss) reasons. |
Then email the author |
I am not in Nigeria but other than interswitch I think there is also something by zenith bank (websurfer, I believe) and perhaps others. With interswitch, which I did ask about some time ago (and you can go to Virgin Nigeria's site for a working example), you get an account with them (I think about 150K), they send you the code with what to do and where, add it to your page in question and everything else is handled behind the scenes - Money is withdrawn from the visitor's account and deposited into interswitch account (who I believe may charge you a transaction fee, assuming they work like paypal). Does this answer your question? |
Click and ye shall know |
allimercy: I actually brought this issue up some time last year but like all my ideas on here, nothing was done. I am not there and don't have the time to move there, stay there and do feasibility studies of my own, otherwise I would have done it. Another problem we have, for stuff that needs to be delievered, IMHO is delivery. So let's say I am in Sokoto and order something from a site that is based in Lagos. How do I get my products? In other words, we also need a chain supply management solution. Maybe not web dev but a problem nonetheless. |
To the best of my knowledge, abia doesn't have a website but I happen to know who is working on it. Unfortunately, he wasn't paid due to the political problems of the governor (orji being sacked or something like that) at the time so he dumped the idea. I hope it can get renewed cos based on what he showed me, it would blow pretty much all the other state website out of the water ![]() |
php4, well said. I guess I didn't get the "proper training" in English to be able to articulate myself better. Thanks once again. |
