I particularly like the fact that the site is responsive. Way to go! Other than that, the portfolio page isn't showing anything, in FF and IE. If I copy the URL in say, FF, and paste it in IE, it opens only the particular section, with no way of going to other sections or the home page. |
When I have time, I might post for other sites. For now, it's sunnewsonline.com, he he 1) Why did you go for the new layout where everything on page is blindingly large? I thought it had to do with responsive web design but when I resized my screen, the site didn't "respond" 2) Have you bothered looking at your site on a mobile device? I just did, again because of my assumptions in #1 above and it is not pretty. |
Assuming I understand what you mean and assuming you are using mySQL: When you create a primary key in one table and a foreign key in another, the 2 tables are related. Now, if you delete from A, without a constraint, you will leave B "hanging" or "orphaned" in that the relationship b/w a particular row in A and a particular row in B is no more. To enforce the situation where what you update in A applies to B or what you delete in A applies to B, you need to use "ON DELETE CASCADE" and/or "ON UPDATE CASCADE" An example: CREATE TABLE categories (Again, the above assumes I understand what you need. Good luck! |
Other than for back pain (and I happen to be working with a guy who is doing the exact same thing as the pix above, I would say this is the height of laziness ![]() |
GraphicPlus, you are straining at a gnat and swallowing a cow. You just had to throw that in, didn't you? ![]() Yep, I goofed. Meant to say population of India and/or China. Oya, go google that one to find something to say, "At least I don get yawa back", he he ![]() |
From the borders, looks like tables were the in thing back then. Either that or boiz only knew back end and like a true "back ender", im own was just to make sure that "it works" without any care for efficiency ![]() |
^^^ Yep, as long as we share the same basic human DNA, you can do whatever I can do, and vice versa ![]() Start with a simple project upon completion and gradually build upon that with every one, or use the same project and add something new. Remember, for every problem you encounter, there will be someone else who has encountered a similar problem. Google for it and I bet you, you will find the solution. Good luck! |
Presently, I have like 5 jobs on me, but I dont feel too ok. I love internet and working around the interent, but I seriously don kno if a Webmaster will be respected in our society in the near future. The bolded above is the wrong attitude, IMHO. Why do most things in Nigeria, revolve around "respect". So what if I work as a road sweeper with a phD? Isn't that better than being a corrupt politician? Impact? Do you have a facebook account? A video I watched of a conference on Friday showed stats that said that there are 900M+ users on facebook. When you consider that the world's population is about 1.3B, that's a huge impact. Also, when you do a job for someone, do you bother following up with them to see how it has impacted their business (as in, if it's a company, how much have sales gone up since it launched), or do you just want the money and then you scram? The web market is also saturated in the US but web developers thrive. You just need to find a niche market and offer something unique. |
Well, if you are good at wordpress and those guys won't pay you for updates, you can still use it but tell them not to ignore the WP notification to upgrade whenever it pops up. On the other hand, if you are confident that your code will be more secure than WP's and you are paid enough for it, by all means, code it from scratch. Good luck! |
1) I learned PHP on my own, via a (php4) ebook a fellow nairalander gave me. I would have loved to have someone teach me but I no longer have time for that. I would love to share it with you but unfortunately, the pc the book was on is no more and I think you should be learning the latest php version. How would I go about finding such a book? Go to amazon and search, note the one with the most stars, read the worst comment for that book and if it doesn't apply to you, google for the ebook. Of course, make sure your antivirus program is on point ![]() 2) No, I didn't know PHP perfectly. No one knows anything perfectly. You learn and add to what you know over time. With what I learned, I was able to put up a website, complete with a mysql database that you could add to, update, delete and search on. 3) How one learns is, and should be a personal preference. I prefer the traditional learning environment since I still believe in the human aspect but, if money and/or time is an issue, get a book and learn on your own. Of course, interact with others to learn from them. Good luck! |
If you are actually "designing (from psd to html...no back end)" it, then I see why can't do it in true conscience. |
For starters, HTML5/CSS3 no b beans. It is easier to whip up a site with the regular stuff than to learn the new stuff and then rip out your hair wondering why it doesn't work on many browsers. Personally, I don't use it on regular sites. Why? Not many clients appreciate the fact that a site doesn't have to look the same across the board. If and when I use it large scale, it will be exclusively for mobile sites. Hopefully, as the "mobile first" ideology catches on, more and more clients will demand this. After all, especially in Nigeria, what percentage of the population use a mobile device as their primary "personal computer"? |
OP, Granted, yes, Medicine is superior to Web development (for one, the former involves years of specialized training and directly involves human life. The latter doesn't. I mean, you can pick up the basics of web dev in a day, if you are up for it) read what I wrote in context, which I probably didn't make clear (apologies in arrears). My overall point: How can one study to be a good doctor in a place where you need generator to run an operating room, use old books, sometimes are reusing sterilized products, where there is no steady supply of water and electricity, etc etc? You need to study medicine in a place where everything is at your disposal. That way, if you are in a position where you lack something, you make do with what you have. Web dev on the other hand is different - for one, I learned PHP in 2 weeks. Tell me, which medical field can one pick up everything there is to know in 2 weeks. Hopefully, you get my point. I have told my kids from an early age that I want them to be doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, business people and engineers. Why? These professions have been around from the foundations of this earth and will never go away. Having said the above, I am definitely not in favor of parents who force their kids to take JAMB 10 times, just so that they can qualify for medical school and so the parents can boast that their kids are doctors. Every one has their own talents. Identify the talent early and groom it, whatever it may be. |
IMHO, even traveling from wherever you are to the US, with its superior infrastructure (compared to Nigeria), to learn web dev doesn't make sense. For something like medicine, pharmacy or other professions along that line, yes, but not web dev. Stay where you are and learn there. Sure, you could travel out for a conference but not for the sole purpose studying web dev. Good luck! |
^^^ Either that or (and this is more likely) their "oga(s) at the top" are quackier than the guys working for them - I mean, if you don't know what you are doing as a person in charge, what do you expect of those who work for you? I happen to know a guy who works for a company in the Lagos area whose job it is to advice companies on ways to make their web apps and other processes more efficient. What this guy is telling me is that, despite the fact that their clients are paying them for this advice, their clients seldom take said advice. Why? My guy proffers that it's because the oga at the top is most likely making money from the status quo. Thus, any perceived threat to that status is met with aggressive rejection. Naija! |

^^^ The "experts" say you need at least 8 hours of sleep, so go figure... |
^^^ He he, how you take sabi? I tend to sleep around midnight-ish and wake up b/w 4am and 5am ![]() |
weekdays: 5 hours. weekends: 6-7. |
I don't think you can without incurring their wrath. Push to see if you can get someone on the inside to hook you up with the contract. good luck! |
Yes it is. From professional to personal, it is. The question you should ask yourself is, "why am i going into it?" If you are going into it because you love it, then you will do well. If you are going into it strictly for money, you won't. |
lol. Na by force? ![]() |
Like the oga, i meant at the top ![]() |
So I am not belittling your work because it is WP. I was merely mentioning it. Customization isn't for the faint of heart. You have to know what you are doing. I personally try to avoid CMS apps because my charges are based on the headache I get each time. In other words, I charge very high though if you are willing to pay, who am I to refuse? ![]() I can't read the entire "black" footer. Maybe it's my eyes but the semi-transparent background with white text is blending with the photo background of the actual page. Finally, I no be "sir" o, he he. Good luck! |
Nav area needs some work. Why are the secondary pages different in design from the home page? They need to be consistent. |
Also: The latest design is way better than the old. Hopefully you took their suggestion as a learning process and not be like the typical naija person ("Do you know who i am?"etc etc), taking it personal. Nice WP customization. I would make the fat footer a solid black though and not semi-transparent - call me old and my eyes week but it was hard to read what's there, against the background. |
I am sure you can do pretty much anything with a CMS. In general, for any CMS, such a specific app will most likely require a custom component/extension (as it is called in Joomla) that you write to suit your needs though I am sure you could customize an already existing extension (for example, a job search extension could probably serve your needs here). My suggestion: If the site will be updated frequently (and given the few state government websites that I know of, they seldom are), develop it in a CMS. Otherwise, write the app yourself from scratch. You will probably get more flexibility this way. Good luck, and do report back! |

Glad to hear you've finally resolved the issue. Some times, you have to weigh a "quick fix" that can take hours vs an "extreme fix" which can be done in 5 minutes (well, maybe not literally ). It looks like you did the smart and right thing, given what you've listed above, and gone for the latter.I am definitely not a fan of blowing up the ceiling to fix a leak in the roof, so to speak, but many at times, based on experience, it is the best option to take. Cheers! |
I clicked the "login" button (top right), without entering data and get a page that has a "log out" link (when I never logged i to begin with) and an error message that reads, " Email not found in database. The email you entered was not found in our database. If not registered, please go back and click on Create Account to register..." |
