Webmasters / Re: My Personal Portfolio Website by yawatide(f): 4:53pm On May 09, 2013
I particularly like the fact that the site is responsive. Way to go!

Other than that, the portfolio page isn't showing anything, in FF and IE. If I copy the URL in say, FF, and paste it in IE, it opens only the particular section, with no way of going to other sections or the home page.
Webmasters / Some Questions For Sunnewonline.com by yawatide(f): 10:15am On May 09, 2013
When I have time, I might post for other sites. For now, it's sunnewsonline.com, he he

1) Why did you go for the new layout where everything on page is blindingly large? I thought it had to do with responsive web design but when I resized my screen, the site didn't "respond"

2) Have you bothered looking at your site on a mobile device? I just did, again because of my assumptions in #1 above and it is not pretty.
Webmasters / Re: My Sql Foreign Key by yawatide(f): 4:38pm On May 08, 2013
Assuming I understand what you mean and assuming you are using mySQL:

When you create a primary key in one table and a foreign key in another, the 2 tables are related. Now, if you delete from A, without a constraint, you will leave B "hanging" or "orphaned" in that the relationship b/w a particular row in A and a particular row in B is no more. To enforce the situation where what you update in A applies to B or what you delete in A applies to B, you need to use "ON DELETE CASCADE" and/or "ON UPDATE CASCADE"

An example:

CREATE TABLE categories (
category_id int unsigned not null primary key,
name varchar(255) default null
);
CREATE TABLE products (
products_id int unsigned not null primary key,
name varchar(255) default null
);

CREATE TABLE categories_products (
category_id int unsigned not null,
products_id int unsigned not null,
FOREIGN KEY (category_id) REFERENCES categories (category_id)
ON DELETE CASCADE
ON UPDATE CASCADE,
FOREIGN KEY (product_id) REFERENCES products (products_id)
ON DELETE CASCADE
ON UPDATE CASCADE,

);

Again, the above assumes I understand what you need. Good luck!

^^^ Yep, as long as we share the same basic human DNA, you can do whatever I can do, and vice versa wink

Start with a simple project upon completion and gradually build upon that with every one, or use the same project and add something new.

Remember, for every problem you encounter, there will be someone else who has encountered a similar problem. Google for it and I bet you, you will find the solution.

Good luck!
Webmasters / Re: Is Website Design A Good And Worthy Career? by yawatide(f): 1:05pm On May 05, 2013

Presently, I have like 5 jobs on me, but I dont feel too ok. I love internet and working around the interent, but I seriously don kno if a Webmaster will be respected in our society in the near future.

The bolded above is the wrong attitude, IMHO. Why do most things in Nigeria, revolve around "respect". So what if I work as a road sweeper with a phD? Isn't that better than being a corrupt politician?

Impact? Do you have a facebook account? A video I watched of a conference on Friday showed stats that said that there are 900M+ users on facebook. When you consider that the world's population is about 1.3B, that's a huge impact. Also, when you do a job for someone, do you bother following up with them to see how it has impacted their business (as in, if it's a company, how much have sales gone up since it launched), or do you just want the money and then you scram?

The web market is also saturated in the US but web developers thrive. You just need to find a niche market and offer something unique.
Webmasters / Re: Designing A Music Website by yawatide(f): 6:35am On May 05, 2013
Well, if you are good at wordpress and those guys won't pay you for updates, you can still use it but tell them not to ignore the WP notification to upgrade whenever it pops up.

On the other hand, if you are confident that your code will be more secure than WP's and you are paid enough for it, by all means, code it from scratch.

Good luck!

1) I learned PHP on my own, via a (php4) ebook a fellow nairalander gave me. I would have loved to have someone teach me but I no longer have time for that. I would love to share it with you but unfortunately, the pc the book was on is no more and I think you should be learning the latest php version. How would I go about finding such a book? Go to amazon and search, note the one with the most stars, read the worst comment for that book and if it doesn't apply to you, google for the ebook. Of course, make sure your antivirus program is on point wink

2) No, I didn't know PHP perfectly. No one knows anything perfectly. You learn and add to what you know over time. With what I learned, I was able to put up a website, complete with a mysql database that you could add to, update, delete and search on.

3) How one learns is, and should be a personal preference. I prefer the traditional learning environment since I still believe in the human aspect but, if money and/or time is an issue, get a book and learn on your own. Of course, interact with others to learn from them.

Good luck!

Webmasters / Re: HTML5/CSS3 How Often Do U Use Them? by yawatide(f): 1:09pm On May 04, 2013
For starters, HTML5/CSS3 no b beans. It is easier to whip up a site with the regular stuff than to learn the new stuff and then rip out your hair wondering why it doesn't work on many browsers.

Personally, I don't use it on regular sites. Why? Not many clients appreciate the fact that a site doesn't have to look the same across the board. If and when I use it large scale, it will be exclusively for mobile sites. Hopefully, as the "mobile first" ideology catches on, more and more clients will demand this. After all, especially in Nigeria, what percentage of the population use a mobile device as their primary "personal computer"?
Webmasters / Re: Is It Worth It To Travel To India To Study Web Development? by yawatide(f): 1:35pm On May 03, 2013
OP,

Granted, yes, Medicine is superior to Web development (for one, the former involves years of specialized training and directly involves human life. The latter doesn't. I mean, you can pick up the basics of web dev in a day, if you are up for it) read what I wrote in context, which I probably didn't make clear (apologies in arrears).

My overall point:
How can one study to be a good doctor in a place where you need generator to run an operating room, use old books, sometimes are reusing sterilized products, where there is no steady supply of water and electricity, etc etc? You need to study medicine in a place where everything is at your disposal. That way, if you are in a position where you lack something, you make do with what you have. Web dev on the other hand is different - for one, I learned PHP in 2 weeks. Tell me, which medical field can one pick up everything there is to know in 2 weeks. Hopefully, you get my point. I have told my kids from an early age that I want them to be doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, business people and engineers. Why? These professions have been around from the foundations of this earth and will never go away.

Having said the above, I am definitely not in favor of parents who force their kids to take JAMB 10 times, just so that they can qualify for medical school and so the parents can boast that their kids are doctors. Every one has their own talents. Identify the talent early and groom it, whatever it may be.

IMHO, even traveling from wherever you are to the US, with its superior infrastructure (compared to Nigeria), to learn web dev doesn't make sense. For something like medicine, pharmacy or other professions along that line, yes, but not web dev. Stay where you are and learn there.

Sure, you could travel out for a conference but not for the sole purpose studying web dev.

Good luck!

^^^ Either that or (and this is more likely) their "oga(s) at the top" are quackier than the guys working for them - I mean, if you don't know what you are doing as a person in charge, what do you expect of those who work for you?

I happen to know a guy who works for a company in the Lagos area whose job it is to advice companies on ways to make their web apps and other processes more efficient. What this guy is telling me is that, despite the fact that their clients are paying them for this advice, their clients seldom take said advice. Why? My guy proffers that it's because the oga at the top is most likely making money from the status quo. Thus, any perceived threat to that status is met with aggressive rejection.

Webmasters / Welcome To Websites Of Federal Ministries (1) by yawatide(f): 1:32pm On May 02, 2013
http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/welcome-to-websites-of-federal-ministries-1/

Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs

There appears to be no functional website for the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs. A search on the popular search engine, Google, did not return any online address for the ministry. When our correspondent called a spokesperson of the ministry, Phil Oshodi, on Tuesday, she said the ministry launched a website around February/ March but did not name an address.

“I know we created one sometimes in February/March,” Oshodi says. Responding to subsequent enquiries by our correspondent, Oshodi sent a text message saying, “I am in the church, let’s talk about this tomorrow (Thursday).”

The absence of a website for the Ministry of Special Duties tends to support the argument that the ministry has no direct relevance to governance.

Ministry of Power

The Ministry of Power, under the leadership of Prof. Chinedu Nebo, agrees with the numerous visitors to its website, www.power.gov.ng, that the design, layout and visual resolution of the portal is poor and below par.

To buttress this point, the web administrator simply placed a notice on the website which reads, “Website under construction. Please, bear with us as we reconstruct our website for better view.”

Meanwhile, visiting the website for valuable information on the worsening state of electricity supply , privatisation updates and power generation reports is a worthwhile adventure as such data are often updated for public consumption.

However, more needs to be done to update the ‘Newsletter,’ ‘Publication,’ ‘Video Gallery’ and ‘Photo Album’ sections as they are currently left dormant with no entries.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

A few weeks after recovering from the hacking by a group of hackers who described themselves as “Pakistan Cyber Eaglez” and purportedly from Pakistan, the website of the ministry of foreign affairs, www.mfa.gov.ng, is far from reflecting the dynamism of the nation’s foreign policies.

A cursory look at the website on Wednesday shows that the ‘latest news’ that the site is dishing out to the international community is that the doors to the ministry will be shut on Independence Day, 2012. “Office would be closed on October 1, 2012 for Independence Day,” it was stated.

A visit to www.mofa.gov.lr, the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Liberia, a fellow West African nation, shows that the country takes the issue of online presence seriously to project its foreign policy thrust to the rest of the world.

www.mofa.gov.lr is not left dormant like that of Nigeria as the managers of the portal deem it wise to use it to inform the world about its cooperation with sub-regional, regional and international development partners, while the country doubles its effort to be a regional player.

Even on a public holiday, such as May Day, the website on Wednesday had an update about the official engagement of the Liberian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augustine Kpehe-Ngafuan with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Vuk Jeremic.

Perhaps, the Nigerian foreign affairs ministry needs to take a cue from the website of the United States Department of State. Apart from the fact that the State Departments’s website, www.state.gov, has a good visual resolution, visitors get the needed information on the United States public diplomacy while the website remains connected with seven social media plug-ins for the sole purpose of social media engagement.

Ministry of Police Affairs

The website of the Ministry of Police Affairs, www.mpa.gov.ng, like the foreign affairs ministry website is also far from being updated. A visit to the website, shows that the portal is only being used to publicise courtesy visits by the Minister, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade.

It appears that the website managers have gone to sleep. The last time the portal was updated was August 28, 2012, when the minister paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Bukuru, Plateau State.

As at the time of filing this report, there was no news item, photograph or video clip of the just concluded Nigeria Police Week on the website of the ministry which is saddled with the responsibility of formulating policies that will ensure efficient and effective policing of the country.

Besides, there is a need for social media plug-ins on the website whenever the ministry decides to maximize the use of the site, so as to make its online presence social.

Yes it is. From professional to personal, it is. The question you should ask yourself is, "why am i going into it?" If you are going into it because you love it, then you will do well. If you are going into it strictly for money, you won't.

So I am not belittling your work because it is WP. I was merely mentioning it. Customization isn't for the faint of heart. You have to know what you are doing. I personally try to avoid CMS apps because my charges are based on the headache I get each time. In other words, I charge very high though if you are willing to pay, who am I to refuse? wink

I can't read the entire "black" footer. Maybe it's my eyes but the semi-transparent background with white text is blending with the photo background of the actual page.

Finally, I no be "sir" o, he he.

Also:
The latest design is way better than the old. Hopefully you took their suggestion as a learning process and not be like the typical naija person ("Do you know who i am?"etc etc), taking it personal.

Nice WP customization. I would make the fat footer a solid black though and not semi-transparent - call me old and my eyes week but it was hard to read what's there, against the background.
Webmasters / Re: Adding A Company Application To My Web Site by yawatide(f): 11:20am On Apr 29, 2013
I am sure you can do pretty much anything with a CMS.

In general, for any CMS, such a specific app will most likely require a custom component/extension (as it is called in Joomla) that you write to suit your needs though I am sure you could customize an already existing extension (for example, a job search extension could probably serve your needs here).

My suggestion:
If the site will be updated frequently (and given the few state government websites that I know of, they seldom are), develop it in a CMS. Otherwise, write the app yourself from scratch. You will probably get more flexibility this way.

Good luck, and do report back!

Webmasters / Nigerian Navy Website On Crude-Oil Theft by yawatide(f): 10:15am On Apr 25, 2013
http://www.cot.navy.mil.ng/

http://www.punchng.com/news/navy-inaugurates-website-on-oil-theft/

Nigerian Navy has inaugurated a new website on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in furtherance of the directive of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism be wiped out from the nation’s maritime environment.

The website, www.cot.navy.mil.ng, provides details on exploration, nominations, approvals, movement and trans-shipment of petroleum products as promulgated by relevant authorities.

It also serves as a platform to share information, exchange ideas with the international community and reports of suspicious activities.

A statement by the Director of Information,Nigeria Navy, Commodore Kabir Aliyu in Abuja on Wednesday said the website would create the desired global awareness on the scourge of oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

“For the benefit of doubt, the only authorised agency that is allowed to nominate, approve lifting, movement and trans-shipment of petroleum products by whatever means of transportation is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation,” he said.

“In the light of this, any vessel not nominated or approved to lift petroleum products by NNPC has contravened established regulations relating to lifting/transportation of petroleum products and is therefore liable for prosecution as provided by law,” it added.

The Navy advised members of the public to report any information concerning illegal activities relating to petroleum products to the Nigerian Navy, other security agencies, NNPC, Directorate of Petroleum Resources and the Nigeria Police for necessary action.

It warned against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering, and noted that culprits will be prosecuted and sanctioned accordingly.
Webmasters / Re: Joomla Article Editing Problem by yawatide(f): 2:28pm On Apr 24, 2013
Glad to hear you've finally resolved the issue. Some times, you have to weigh a "quick fix" that can take hours vs an "extreme fix" which can be done in 5 minutes (well, maybe not literally wink ). It looks like you did the smart and right thing, given what you've listed above, and gone for the latter.

I am definitely not a fan of blowing up the ceiling to fix a leak in the roof, so to speak, but many at times, based on experience, it is the best option to take.

Cheers!
