I just viewed the site on my samsung galaxy tab and other than the navigation bunching up in portrait mode, the site is scaling well. To get rid of this, you need to use percentages for your widths. What I noticed was in portrait mode, the site didn't expand to fill my screen. Rather, it became "slimmer". That tells me that you are most likely still hardcoding widths somewhere. Also, why do you have an IEMobile conditional? Is it not showing up well on windows phones? I've never actually seen this conditional so I'm interested in knowing what it's all about. |
1) I would seriously consider dumping IE6. Think of what I said above again - even MSFT doesn't want you to use it and it will cause you unnecessary stress. I guess you like to suffer 2) Something working in IE6 won't ensure working in IE7 (in particular), 8, etc 3) You can YIM me at yawatide and we go from there |
1) Move "contact us" to the end of the nav list 2) Make the home page slideshow's height the same as the height of the images on other pages, or vice versa. 3) Testimonials page is missing it's own main header image |
slyrox: ROFLMAO! LWKMD!! poster: 1) I would stop trying to support IE6. I already knew this, albeit without the numbers to back it up, but to support my conclusions, I read an article yesterday that said you add 20% of time to your development cycle by trying to support IE6. Besides, even MSFT doesn't want you to use it http://www.ie6countdown.com/2) You should aim for cross-browser support first. That means coding semantically. After that, you can deal with specific browsers 3) As a snippet, here is what you could do, if I understand what you need: a) Make sure you use the meta tag that will set IE7 as your baseline: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />. This should immediately follow your HEAD open tag |
^^^ Nice write up but semantics is semantic - a P tag is always a P tag and should be used for paragraphs...a UL tag is the same way, etc etc. |
You are using conditional CSS to display certain styles for IE. What you are doing is displaying certain CSS code if the IE version is less than 9. The problem with this approach is: 1) What happens when someone visits the site with IE9 and above? 2) When IE9 becomes stable enough for use, what will you site look like on IE7 and IE8? You should endeavor to make your code as generic as possible so that it is browser-independent. It is possible, though it takes a lot of discipline and patience. Make sense? |
If your connection is failing then you are probably missing the correct log in credentials or you aren't setting the right port number. As for cpanel and unzipping, if it is like mine, select the file and click "extract". It will ask you where you want the files extracted to and you do so accordingly. You should be good to go after that. good luck! |
^^^ If you use jquery mobile, it's a breeze ![]() |
Complete the circle - go mobile as well. Besides, in Nigeria, majority of your visitors/clients will be on mobile, no? |
depends on features |
You will need to sniff for that particular browser and not apply the media queries accordingly. You can sniff for it either on the front end (javascript) or the back end (PHP, JSP, etc) |
Such new would definitely be on some major news website. Link please. Otherwise, if I were the moderator, I would hv you in my sights for banning ![]() |
1) A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush 2) You have 5 fingers for a reason 3) Technically, you don't have to go to a school to learn this trade 4) Despite your speed of learning, becoming a pro in this field takes years (it's not just about what you do but how you do it). Good luck! |
Every village has its own town crier, which sounds different from the next village's town crier. If you don't try, you will never know. Better to try and fail than not to try at all. Need I go on? ![]() Good luck! |
My quotes include everything. However, I do ask upfront whether or not you have a logo. If you don't, I will ask if you need one. If you say yes, again, I add it to the cost of the website. IMHO, by not quoting separately, I give the impression that I am not a "nickel and dime (google for the meaning)" developer ![]() Good luck! |
It seems a bit too dark. |
how do you define "best" and of what benefit is declaring one "best"? |
I could have sworn that the latest version of opencart has a slideshow by default. Worse case, you just replace their photos with yours and you are good to go. |
It's a combo of project- and client-dependent for me |
Unless you are on certain models of BB and other phones (nokia?), all smartphones support CSS files. All the same, kudos for solving your own problem. Now, you have accumulated experience that you can take on to the next project(s). |
The fools just dey PUNCH themselvesROFLMAO! LWKMD!! I am going to make an assumption which is that either those at the top are ignorant of what the IT guys are doing, trusting their every move, or they are the typical naija client who wants a facebook website but only want to pay peanuts for it. Moreover, since they have been winning awards left and right, they have probably taken their eye off the ball as they bask in the limelight. Web security is a big deal, especially for a site like Punch's. Unfortunately, I bet you they are willing to devote the money that it deserves into it, even though they have the money to take care of it. |
Where is the "like" button when you need it? ![]() |
Folks, As we don enter 2013, make we promise our web design/development community say we no go charge less than 50K per website. I don ban 10K websites in Jesus' Name! ![]() Happy New Year!! |
Use either a mobile library like jquery mobile or, if u do use regular html, make sure the DIVs widths are in %s or EMs. If you consider yourself a pro, take a look at responsive web design and you should be good to go. good luck! |
As the bible says, beware of the straight road, as it leadeth to hell ![]() Tables might be easy and convenient, but it isn't semantic for you to use it for other than presenting tabular data. Stick with DIVs. |
jquery is used for a myriad of things. Whenever you are in doubt, just view source and search for "jquery". if you see a reference on the page, know they are using it for something |
Yes, the kind of stuff you noted above can be implemented without harm but there is more stuff. As for importing extra KB, my concern there is for folks (like in Nigeria) with low bandwidth , especially when considering a lot of such folks are on mobile devices. To me, the faster you delivery the bytes, the better. No arguments though. You make salient points as well...many that I am familiar with. Just clean, honest debate, which I must confess, I have enjoyed thus far. As for MSFT no longer supporting IE7, I don't know about that. I know of IE6 but not IE7. Many companies that I know have a minimum of IE7 for browser support so that to me says/means something. |
Here is what you missed: ...but if you were to choose one, which do you think is more important?Sure, technically both are both important but even at that, there is one that is slightly better than the other, as with other things in life. |
@DigitalIdeas, answer d question as asked now ![]() OP: If I were to choose one, I would go for on-page SEO - If you don't get this right from the onset, all your link building may come to naught. |
Obviously Appiah looks better than Oge now ![]() |
Yes, there are plenty of fallbacks, like this one but I always have 2 questions which not many have been able to answer to my satisfaction (not to say it is bad to use them): 1) Is it worth importing extra KB of JavaScript (or whatever code) just to use HTML5 or CSS3? 2) What happens when the browser you are targetting does support HTML/CSS3? Will you need to go back and take out these extra libraries or will everything fall into place automatically? |
