I write not to disagree with whether or not the news is manually updated (after viewing the source and noting the file names, I have concluded that there is a high probability that the news is in fact manually uploaded) but to note that files having html extension don't necessarily imply that they are manually uploaded. For example, CNN's files are .html but from inside knowledge, I know that their news is uploaded via a CMS tool.

Having said that, if in fact point blank news is manually uploaded, I wonder what their excuse is. Oh wait, I think I do know: They don't want to fork out the cash to get it done by a professional - typical!
WebmastersRe: Website Designer Needed by yawatide(f): 4:24am On Nov 15, 2011
Just for the records, its not a departmental site, its a student organization site, so you cannot just 'get' computer science students to develop the site as a form of 'internship'.
I beg to differ. The mere fact that it is a student organization site is reason enough to get one of the fellow students (assuming such a student is well versed in web dev. If not, you are SOL in that area) to do the site. Also by the way, just for the record, internships come in 2 flavors: paid and unpaid.
WebmastersRe: Website Designer Needed by yawatide(f): 4:41pm On Nov 14, 2011
Since you mention "(pro-bono or for a low fee)", I have a better idea: From the school's parent website, the school has a computer science course. The school should approach students in that department and have them do the website for a small fee (as interns).

In the school I went to, students did the sites for all the departments in my school. . .and got paid a nominal fee, as students. The added benefit is that the project would remain in-house and students can get paid, rather than crawl to their parents for money.
WebmastersRe: Website Review. Check This Website Out. Www.ceafa.org.ng by yawatide(f): 11:37am On Nov 14, 2011
1) Get rid of that "thing" in the top right of the header - the man looks CREEPY
2) Move the search text box from where it is now to the bottom right of the header, right where that creepy "thing" is
3) Your contact form isn't validating.
4) Get rid of the auto-playing music. It might have been the fad years ago but now, it is annoying. Give visitors the option of playing it.

It looks a hell of a lot like http://www.dailyindependentnigeria.com/ or am I seeing double?
WebmastersRe: How Can I Make This Javascript Work by yawatide(f): 12:54pm On Nov 13, 2011
Taking a bird's eye view (I would have thought you would post the html code for the form):

1) Were there any values in the form fields when you tried to access their values?

2) IMHO, I think it makes more sense for you to: Use the DOM, via an ID, to get a count of fields that aren't empty, store those in an array, then loop over that array to get their values

Direct access to any vars when it comes to programming in general, doesn't make for readable/understandable code

WebmastersRe: How To Trace A Yahoo Site by yawatide(f): 10:04pm On Nov 12, 2011
To add to the discussion, Yahoo has 2 ways for you to register with them:

1) The normal submission route, which I think is the url posted above. Here once submitted, your site waits to get indexed

2) A "fast track" submission route, which ensures 48-hour inclusion time. You have to pay for this one though. Here, you are dealing with the actual index (or whatever it is they call it)

Thanks for the compliments. We are pretty much done with coding. What's left if content gathering, testing and security.

we will keep you all posted.

mikron,

At what expense? The combined erosion of my cornea and retina? tongue
WebmastersRe: Sunnewsonline.com by yawatide(f): 7:48pm On Nov 10, 2011
I rarely visit tribune's site cos news from there seldom makes it to my rss feed but I must ask:

Which would you rather prefer? A site that updates news daily but is so poorly architected that it hurts your eyes looking for information past the main news graphic at the top OR a site that is seldom updated but you like to go there in hopes there is news, because the layout lends itself to being user friendly?  Call me weird, but I would go for the latter.  I only visit sun news because I have been doing so for the past 4 years on a daily basis and so it has become a habit for me.  Even when more respected and notable news sites were down, sun news has always been there, like an old soldier.

I will say though that you should give it to sun news because despite its look and feel, one or 2 articles do manage to make it into my rss feed so I guess they must be doing something right.

Dont forget, review my and I review yours.
review mine, i review yours. . .man no go vex. step on d dance floor. . . man no go vex LOL

I'm just testing something out,
Anyways, here is what a tennis coach told his class, of which I was a student, way back in 1995 or so:
"Even when practicing serving, you want to serve the ball right. Why? Because if you don't, you will most likely go into a real game and serve the ball as though you were practicing. Always serve the ball right all the time. Always volley the ball right, all the time."

If you don't get what I just said above, don't worry, you will get it before the week runs out. If you still don't get it by then, you are SOL cool
WebmastersRe: Sunnewsonline.com by yawatide(f): 4:50pm On Nov 10, 2011

WebmastersRe: Please Review This Web Site by yawatide(f): 1:41am On Nov 10, 2011
If you have no data to display, add text to that effect. Don't just leave the page blank, with a header. gives the impression it is under construction.

WebmastersRe: How To Improve Your Alexa Blog and Site Rankings by yawatide(f): 10:36pm On Nov 09, 2011
The last time I checked (I read it in some article, dating back to 2008), the google page rank you see for your site is not the actual rank. In other words, what you see today is what was actually the case some time ago.

My point:
Don't rely on google page rank

WebmastersRe: Sunnewsonline.com by yawatide(f): 8:24pm On Nov 09, 2011
he he, have you seen the prices they are charging even for online ads?

Sha, I visit them every day because take it or leave it, they are up to date. Because of the quality of the site though, I end up doing a ctrl+F for certain keywords. This is because presentation architecture on the site is sub zero.
WebmastersRe: Rant Of The Day: Issues With Punch Online Website by yawatide(op): 7:04pm On Nov 09, 2011
He he, slyr0x. From past experience, I know that those E-reps abound, granted they are for the most part, in ROM mode only. Let's just hope they get it fixed. I guess the only way we will know for sure is if Punch either has an IT staff on deck or if they are paying someone for maintenance. In other words, if they dealt with an "clean mouth" developer, I guess we will be SOL
WebmastersRe: This Is Why You Don't Buy Templates by yawatide(op): 7:02pm On Nov 09, 2011
I personally am not disputing whether or not one should use a template. What I agree 1000% with you on, however is the 2nd part of ur post:
it is now left for the designer or developer to tweaked the templates or theme in a way that it will be unique
Therein lies the crux of the matter.
WebmastersRe: Helo Joomlander Pls Rescue Me by yawatide(f): 7:01pm On Nov 09, 2011
I am of the humble opinion that what the OP wants achieved can be done by editing the HTML of the template from within the Joomla admin interface. I say so because based on his concern, what he wants done is global in nature.

If this is true:
1) Keep the site in question open in one tab
2) In another tab, go to your admin console and from there, go to your template manager
3) Select the theme you are using
4) click "edit html"
5) Make a back up of what is there currently
6) Assuming you know HTML and a little bit of PHP, navigate the code and insert the banner and FB code where you want it to go
7) Click "apply" (not "save". "Apply" will save the code but keep it open for further editing, where applicable)
cool Test
9) If it is where you want it to be, it's all good. Otherwise, replace new code with the back up

Happy coding!
WebmastersRant Of The Day: Issues With Punch Online Website by yawatide(op): 11:42am On Nov 09, 2011
To Whom It May Concern:

Your scrolling news section on the home page: Due to the size of the photos, by the time I scroll down to the "next" and "previous" buttons, it is hard for me to see the photos as well as the accompanying news headers. As a result, I have to scroll such that part of the image is cut off. This is bad.

Simple solution:
reduce the size of the images. THis will bring that section back "above the fold"

Thanks
WebmastersRe: Embedded Videos Affects Bandwidth? by yawatide(f): 10:36pm On Nov 08, 2011
You will be using another's resources so no, it won't affect your bandwidth.

What will affect your bandwidth, relative to the video though, is the HTML code that you are using to call it. . .which should be pretty minimal.

Happy coding!
WebmastersRe: Please Help Me Review This Site by yawatide(f): 7:27pm On Nov 08, 2011
I don't see anything wrong per se but:

1) Try using css shorthand (for example: #ffffff could be written as #fff - this only applies when each pair is the same)
2) Try not to use browser-specific rules (webkit-) and go for graceful degradation.

That's about it, bro. As for what the other guy said, I am afraid you will have to ask him (which you have). . .and hope he responds wink
WebmastersRe: Please Help Me Review This Site by yawatide(f): 3:36pm On Nov 08, 2011
All pages have (or at least they should have) titles like, "About Us". Always wrap such page titles in H1 tags and not DIV tags. This will ensure:
1) The code is semantic
2) Search engines know what is of utmost importance to you and index your pages accordingly

make sense now?
WebmastersRe: Please Help Me Review This Site by yawatide(f): 6:01pm On Nov 07, 2011
1) Get rid of the goofy image on the contact us page. It doesn't look professional at all

2) Your contact form isn't validating properly. In particular phone and email address

3) You could have implemented the orange-looking text (banner5.jpg) in your header image as text. Not only is this good from an SEO perspective (unless you wnat that hidden from bots) but also helps reduce the size of your images.

4) Your page headers shouldn't be declared in DIVs but in H1s. Again, this is good from an SEO perspective

Good luck!
WebmastersRe: Trouble With Javascript Code by yawatide(f): 5:58pm On Nov 07, 2011
Also think about including alert statements everywhere, for the values you are expecting. If you hit an alert and it either doesn't show or it shows but not the result you are expecting, you know where the problem is coming from.

good luck!

WebmastersRe: Trouble With Javascript Code by yawatide(f): 12:29pm On Nov 07, 2011
1) The issue isn't the init fxn. The onload fxn is calling a user-defined init fxn. So again, this isn't the issue

2) First and foremost in times like this, you need to do what pc_guru has suggested - ask for what error OP is seeing. Anything otherwise is like asking a mechanic to determine what is wrong with a car without even knowing the symptoms. Sure the mechanic might get it right based on the sound of the car (assuming it even starts) but that is not scientific and in no way is a guarantee.

Happy coding!
