u advertise job but no where to send CVs to. Abi we send it via your "contact us" page? ![]() |
sly: u r scary o! he he. Any how, I visit the site on a daily basis (in fact, I visit it after I finish reading the threads on NL ) and have never had the site flagged so this comes as a surprise to me. |
Every business venture has a future. It all depends on the vision of the owner. good luck! |
WEEKLY UPDATE The prototype is complete and testing is ongoing (both regular and security). We hope to get a report by November 28, 2011 so that any bug fixes can be ready no later than December 1, 2011. Marketing and unveiling to the general public is due to begin on later than December 5, 2011, before the holiday rush. |
OP: Though I will agree to you, to an extent, that it may have to do with ignorance, I will also beg to differ in a few ways: 1) You don't blow up a building to fix a leak in the roof: If I do a site for someone and at best, it is updated say, once a month, there is no point for a CMS. 2) Capitalism at its best: If you can convince a client that they are better off having you do the site updating, as opposed to doing it yourself, why not? Hey, it's more money in your pocket 3) Other solutions: I for one consider myself lazy and so always go for the shortcut. Again, in the rare ocassion where the client insist that they be able to update their sites themselves, I will use a CMS. Otherwise, given #2 above, I would rather use a tool like disqus. |
same difference. By using that website and factoring in avg internet connections in your locale, you will be able to determine speeds without them telling you. Come on man! You dey fear Math 1101? ![]() |
purplkacy: Not really. I was just into the whole, "let he without sin cast the first stone" thingie. Now that I have seen that you've put your money where your mouth is, I just might reconsider ![]() And hey, if you knew someone would ask, why didn't you save us the trouble by mentioning it upfront, as opposed to giving yourself unnecessary heartburn? |
Why not one of the many tools that analyzes speed, like websiteoptimization.com ? |
Have you? If you have, my hat's off to you. Tender the receipt, as a sign of good faith, and I bet others will follow suit |
Do they have a website currently? If so, is http://www.nis.org.ng/ the url? If yes, hmm, was it recently hacked? |
I happen to be working with a guy who is 51 years old. He claims he hasn't experienced any discrimination based on age. He presents his credentials and it is up to the company to decide whether or not to hire him. Of course, per unwritten work rules, we have never discussed salary. Based on my experience working with him, I will say the following: 1) At least in web dev, job roles stagnate at usually the senior level 2) Even if a managerial position is available, I personally wouldn't take it as, if you lose your job, it is harder to explain what you do as a manager (besides, do we really need that many?) as opposed to explaining what you do as a web developer 3) The key is to continue to remain marketable. How do you do that? Keep on reading. What is my advice to myself (locale-dependent of course)? Remain marketable but don't count on current global trends to ensure my job availability in the next 30 years. I need to not get comfortable and continue seeking the next opportunity, even if it isn't in my core competency areas, including making a complete 360 switch of careers, if I need to. |
hrhobi1: come on man! Even in the midst of garbage, you are bound to find a rose ![]() |
Left for me, I would do what I had said at first: Isn't this the same company that recently let go of more than a few Nigerian workers, on account of wanting to move to Ghana, due to cost (or whatever crappy reason they gave at the time)? If this is true, then I suggest they rehire those people, create a Quality Assurance department and put all those people in that department. Heck! I am not a tester but if they are willing to do this, I will consult for them on this, free of charge.Seems only fair. . . |
hamsky: What you are referencing is the root, which works. Even if we had the url wrong, the error message we are seeing is actually very unprofessional. Check CNN's 404 error page for an easy reference: http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/21/opinion/gergen-reckless-congress/indexs.html?hpt=hp_c2 See the difference? Regardless, it still goes back to the fact that we don't have a testing culture in our web design processes in Nigeria, generally speaking. |
Weekly Update (sorry for the delay): Testing server hit a snag and this has delayed uploading of content. All should be done no later than 23 Nov., 2011. After data entry, it will off to the testers (regular and security). |
tsupilot: If I had $1m to spare, you would get it, on the basis of your excellent post. If I had another 500K to spare, I would give it to abelian (yep, perhaps groups who need to do stuff temporarily and don't need it as a core competency can use it, just to get by). We, as a black race in general, are nothing but a bunch of consumers. Why couldn't the government, just like the chinese do, limit what google can do for us and then again like the chinese, encourage our own folks to come up with such original solutions? Oil will not flow forever. It is high time we start developing other sectors of our economy. Let's also not forget that google isn't exactly giving you that stuff for free. They are in the business of data collection. By signing up with them, you are losing 2ce: First by consuming their product and secondly, by (freely) telling them everything about you. |
He he. what do you expect when we don't have, generally speaking, a testing tradition under our belts? It doesn't end with, "this is a good design". A website needs to be maintained. Furthermore, when stuff changes on a site, there needs to be some form of regression testing, in addition to testing for the newly added (or removed) functionality. As they say, you don't get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. Call me picky and weird but by acts like this, I would not only conclude never to use them but not to work for them or hire anyone who is currently working for them in certain capacities. Isn't this the same company that recently let go of more than a few Nigerian workers, on account of wanting to move to Ghana, due to cost (or whatever crappy reason they gave at the time)? If this is true, then I suggest they rehire those people, create a Quality Assurance department and put all those people in that department. Heck! I am not a tester but if they are willing to do this, I will consult for them on this, free of charge. |
What is the difference b/w 12K and 12,000? You will need to click to find out: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-806965.0.html |
If this were an essay question and you were my student, I would have failed you. So it is bad? Why? I happen to think it isn't bad. Not everyone, especially those just entering the business world (think of the Mama Iyabos of the world selling mama put), may have the money to get a good website done. Thanks to GNBO, they can at least have something going until they have the money to go big time. It is also a good idea for those who want something up and running real quick, while waiting for their main site to go up. For instance, I did a website for someone recently. Midway through, he was already demanding a redesign. Of course I charged him extra so don't ask . What we agreed I would do is, proceed with the current design, so that he at least has a website, which is something his clients were asking for as a condition of doing business with him, then work on the new design. |
A niche of fantastic mediocrity? Where would this board be without the humor ![]() |
Define "fully functional" please |
Let me put it this way: Boko Haram could bomb 10 targets in a row, over the next month and it wouldn't have the same effect that NL being off the air for just 10 minutes would have. Sad, but true. |
On the one hand, if indeed the project cost 500K, I am happy that finally, some of us are wising up to not charging 5K. It's about time. On the other hand, I would expect better work. I am going to assume that there was no bidding process and this was a "man know man" insider job. Oh well, again, I say kudos to the 500K. We need to start believing in ourselves to the point where we don't charge cheap for our work. |
syvalam: Unfortunately, we are past the stage of coding. We are currently uploading content after which we will commence testing and security. If you are interested in any of the remaining roles, scroll up for instructions on how to join the closed FB group, send me an email with your contact info and wait for further instructions. Thanks, |
lol, pc guru: Do I sense some paranoia? LOL |
Folks, As I am sure you all know, you can turn off the gps tracking feature of your phones. Besides, where all else fails, you can take out the battery and put it back in when you are ready to make a call, from that "undisclosed" location ![]() |
Again (what is wrong with me today? ), I second Dual.Every technological advancement comes with its "disadvantages": Planes have put trains out of business, email has done same to the post offices around the world. Heck! Cheaper developers in countries like Nigeria, China and India are threatening me for my job in the states! We just have to adapt to current trends, improving upon processes and remaining relevant. The world can't afford to remain stuck on neutral just because it will deny some the ability to find a job. |
I second Dual's question. By 2014, according to a study I recently read, there will be 6 billion mobile devices in use worldwide and a majority of those (sorry, I forgot that statistic) will be smartphones and tablets. This is why I recently picked up mobile web design and have started offering it as a combo (regular site + mobile site) package. . .with a discount I might add ![]() I wouldn't say PHCN is to blame here though. It's more like NITEL and a sign of the times: NITEL: Without reliable land lines, how do you expect people to surf from home? People then resort to cyber cafes, which in and of itself aren't exactly safe in the sense that for instance, you couldn't guarantee your safety by going to a cyber cafe in the wee hours of the morning. Sign of the times: It's all about technological advances. |
bcuzmblack: what is going on here is no different than a conversation that would go on b/w car enthusiasts. It is called PASSION. When you have it for something, then at that level, you want to see the next person succeed. Again, they don't have to take what we are saying. I personally could care less. All we are offering is best practices, which will help the owner in the long run. Sure, the owner is providing a service but just like a nice car, the novice will see it and say, "wow! thatz a cool ride". The enthusiast, on the other hand, will say, "yeah its a cool ride but if you look closely, the rims r a bit rusty". |
omo: I would have loved to respond to your latest post which was responding to my (deleted) post. Unfortunately it is gone and no one can follow so I will have to stop there. I hope you understand. |
