Politics › "Suffering Is The Label Of Our Tribe"- Nnamdi Azikiwe Inspiring Address To Igbos by Youngadvocate(op):
On June 25, the Oracle of Nigeria Independence and Freedom, Legend of our common history, gathered his Igbo brothers and sisters to sell out the fredom fight.

Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Owelle Onitsha Nke Mbu N'ala Igbo, mounted on to the platform to dispense his Charismatic, Oratory genuis in view to persuade Umu-Igbo to join in the fight for Nigerian emancipation and self-determination, highlighting the allergic nature of Ndi-Igbo to slavery, subjugation, intimidation and other attendant forces that cage human freedom.

His speech was unanimously accepted as expected at soon enough, the people would swing into action.

In the following address given eleven years before Nigerian independence, Nnamdi Azikiwe calls for self-determination for the Ibo as they along with other ethnic groups march toward an inevitably free Nigeria.  This address was delivered at  the Ibo State Assembly held at Aba, Nigeria, on Saturday, June 25, 1949.

Read on..

Harbingers of a new day for the Ibo nation, having selected me to preside over the deliberations of this assembly of the Ibo nation, I am conscious of the fact that you have not done so because of any extraordinary attributes in me. I realize that I am not the oldest among you, nor the wisest, nor the wealthiest, nor the most experienced, nor the most learned. I am therefore grateful to you for elevating me to this high pedestal.

The Ibo people have reached a cross-road and it is for us to decide which is the right course to follow. We are confronted with routes leading to diverse goals, but as I see it, there is only one road that I can safely recommend for us to tread, and it is the road to self-determination for the Ibo within the framework of a federated commonwealth of Nigeria and the Cameroons, leading to a United States of Africa. Other roads, in my opinion, are calculated to lead us astray from the path of national self-realization.

It would appear that God has specially created the Ibo people to suffer persecution and be victimized because of their resolute will to live. Since suffering is the label of our tribe, we can afford to be sacrificed for the ultimate redemption of the children of Africa. Is it not fortunate that the Ibo are among the few remnants of indigenous African nations who are still not spoliated by the artificial niceties of Western materialism? Is it not historically significant that throughout the glorious history of Africa, the Ibo is one of the select few to have escaped the humiliation of a conqueror’s sword or to be a victim of a Carthaginian treaty? Search through the records of African history and you will fail to find an occasion when, in any pitched battle, any African nation has either marched across Ibo territory or subjected the Ibo nation to a humiliating conquest. Instead, there is record to show that the martial prowess of the Ibo, at all stages of human history, has rivaled them not only to survive persecution, but also to adapt themselves to the role thus thrust upon them by history, of preserving all that is best and most noble in African culture and tradition. Placed in this high estate, the Ibo cannot shirk the responsibility conferred on it by its manifest destiny. Having undergone a course of suffering the Ibo must therefore enter into its heritage by asserting its birthright, without apologies.

Follow me in a kaleidoscopic study of the Ibo. Four million strong in man-power! Our agricultural resources include economic and food crops which are the bases of modern civilization, not to mention fruits and vegetables which flourish in the tropics! Our mineral resources include coal, lignite, lead, antimony, iron, diatomite, clay, oil, tin! Our forest products include timber of economic value, including iroko and mahogany! Our fauna and flora are marvels of the world! Our land is blessed by waterways of world renown, including the River Niger, Imo River, Cross River! Our ports are among the best known in the continent of Africa. Yet in spite of these natural advantages, which illustrate without doubt the potential wealth of the Ibo, we are among the least developed in Nigeria, economically, and we are so ostracized socially, that we have become extraneous in the political institutions of Nigeria.

I have not come here today in order to catalogue the disabilities which the Ibo suffer, in spite of our potential wealth, in spite of our teeming man-power, in spite of our vitality as an indigenous African people; suffice it to say that it would enable you to appreciate the manifest destiny of the Ibo if I enumerated some of the acts of discrimination against us as a people. Socially, the British Press has not been sparing in describing us as ‘the most hated in Nigeria’. In this unholy crusade, the Daily Mirror, The Times, The Economist, News Review and the Daily Mail have been in the forefront. In the Nigerian Press, you are living witnesses of what has happened in the last eighteen months, when Lagos, Zaria and Calabar sections of the Nigerian Press were virtually encouraged to provoke us to tendentious propaganda. It is needless for me to tell you that today, both in England and in West Africa, the expression ‘Ibo’ has become a word of opprobrium.

Politically, you have seen with your own eyes how four million people were disenfranchized by the British, for decades, because of our alleged backwardness. We have never been represented on the Executive Council, and not one Ibo town has had the franchise, despite the fact that our native political institutions are essentially democratic—in fact, more democratic than any other nation in Africa, in spite of our extreme individualism.

Economically, we have laboured under onerous taxation measures, without receiving sufficient social amenities to justify them. We have been taxed without representation, and our contributions in taxes have been used to develop other areas, Out of proportion to the incidence of taxation in those areas. It would seem that we are becoming a victim of economic annihilation through a gradual but studied process. What are my reasons for cataloguing these disabilities and interpreting them as calculated to emasculate us, and so render us impotent to assert our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

Crime › Photo: Church Elder Arraigned In Court Stealing N10 Million From His Pastor by Youngadvocate(op): 12:22pm On Apr 27, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday April 26th arraigned an Onitsha based businessman Chris Onyebuchi Ijeoma alongside his company, Tellers International Limited before Justice I.B.Gafai of the Federal High Court, Awka, Anambra state on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretense and stealing the sum of N10million belonging to the head pastor and general overseer of a Pentecostal church in the commercial city.

Ijeoma’s ordeal started after a petition was written to the commission alleging that sometime in 2014, he approached the complainant (General Overseer) with a business proposal to help raise funds to finance the importation of insecticide/ pest sprayer from the USA, to the tune of N10m, with a promise to pay back within three months, after the sale of the products.

The complainant further stated that having advanced the sum to the suspect, who was also an elder if the church council, on March 18 ,2014, he waited for more than after three months without receiving any payment as promised. He then approached Ijeoma and demanded to know why the products were not yet imported, to which he said he had invested the money in a US-based cream company and that NAFDAC approval was needed before the goods would be exported to Nigeria; a development different from what was agreed upon.

When the case was called, the suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge. Defence counsel, C.M. Obijagwam thereafter applied orally for his client’s bail which was denied by Justice Gafai stating he had to apply formally. He further ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody pending the hearing of the bail application. The case has been adjourned to June 6.

Politics › Gov. Fayose, Ike Ekweremadu, Others Are Raising Funds For Nnamdi Kanu's Bail by Youngadvocate(op): 7:33am On Apr 27, 2017
The Governor Ayodele Faose of Ekiti State popularly called the "voice of the voiceless" has revealed that he, Ike Ekweremadu and other notable persons have already started raising funds to help Mazi Nnamdi Kanu meet the financial part of his Bail conditions, while calling on other Nigerians to cue in the project

While he addressed Newsmen on the effort on Wednesday, Fayose said "I’m trying to work with other well meaning Nigerians to raise funds for Kanu so that he can fund his lawyers and meet his immediate family needs.

“We are going to ensure that the injustice meted out to him does not destroy him. He has parents, wife and children to take care of. I appeal to Nigerians to support this just cause.”

Fayose, who is the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, called on lawyers to join the struggle for liberation.

“As many as lawyers willing to fight the oppression should join the struggle for liberation from the oppression.

“Those willing can send their correspondence to Governors Office or reach me on my telephone line 070300000393 or myemail:mystory2006@yahoo.com.”

Fayose confirmed that Ekwemeradu will be part of the coordinators that will steer the fund raising committee.

The account will be raised in Kanu’s name and will belong to him.

“We are just driving the cause. As soon as we receive his account details we will be made available. The money will be used for him and others in incarceration with him.

“We believe in coexistence of Nigeria. People have the right to agitate for independence. Even in traditional institution people agitate for autonomy.

“When people agitate and they cannot get it, they drop the idea. It is not for you to silence them. That is oppression. Agitation is legitimate”, he said.

Politics › The Judgement Of Justice Binta On Nnamdi Kanu...pure Manifestation Of Politics by Youngadvocate(op): 7:40pm On Apr 25, 2017
It's true Nnamdi Kanu has been granted Bail. The polity is already awash of praise-singers and sadist of vituperation. But the discerned, the informed are not letting out all that emotion.

Proper discerning of the circumstances surrounding the BAIL could unclad some contentious facts settled in deep subtle political game play. For one, it is obvious the Judge was hard pressed to give out her judgement with the bail conditions seemingly outrageous. Did you remember the allegations levelled against Nnamdi Kanu? Carrying of illegal arms, belonging to an unlawful society, publishing defamatory articles, terrorism etc, all the frivolous charges were trashed.

Now, let's consider the bail conditions? Aside the near impossibility of having up to three persons resident in Abuja stand as surety for Kanu with N100million, How is it possible for example, that Nnamdi Kanu, now a popular figure amongst his people, must not appear in a gathering of more than ten persons (even family meeting beats that number)? He is the Director of Radio Biafra based in London which is his career, how can he agree to forfeit all his passports? He can not address the Press and whatever public address? These last two points say in a nutshell, that Kanu will never have any business with Radio Biafra.

Back to the real crux; the politics in the justice delivered. Quite recently, the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has met hue and fry. All verbal attacks and hate were directed to the President Buhari who/whatever is associated with him including the APC. Notable persons stood and identified with Nnamdi Kanu. And they pulled their supporters along. And the Federal Govt had much of the pressure to handle.

It is certain that from the judgement, the intent of the Federal government aided by Justice Binta was to silence the Biafran agitations which at the moment, Nnamdi Kanu pilots. If the leader can't address his followers, can't address the press, can't travel out for high powered meetings, can't gather with his followers, is circumferenced in the country where his pick-up is handy should he go contrary to government directive, or enter govt bad records...how does the fight continue? And how would the followers carry on?

If the justice delivered was devoid of heavy politicking and propensity to serve political needs, for goodness sake, how would Nnamdi Kanu charged for TERRORISM be granted bail on health grounds? And how would bail on health ground have such stringent conditions even seizing all passports of the accused. What about being flown abroad for further treatment?

Is is not so clear that the government is all out to silence gathering storm from the "Rising sun?" Keeping Nnamdi Kanu which was their biggest mistake has unfortunately gathered much hit and momentum for the Biafra agitations. It begs for insight, the factor that necessitated the concocted judgment. Pure politics.

Moreover, another twist to the "arrangee" political judgement brings the forthcoming Anambra Gubernatorial Election to the picture. Reality check reveals that Anambra is the hub of the IPOB's and other pro-Biafra organisations' activities. Emotions and sentiments aligned with the struggle for Biafra depress any feeling of likeness for the APC and so, the doom of the APC in the coming election is a fact. Sweeping all seats in the just concluded Ebonyi State LGA election by the PDP is an eye opener.

Could it be that APC political gladiators in the South East saw the gory signs and the trepidation of their historic humiliation in the Anambra Election and beckoned on the father of the nation to do something atleast, to appease the assumed gullible public (Anambra people are smarter than that, am sure of).

Abia state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has pledged N1 million reward to anyone who provides useful information that would directly lead to the arrest of Kidnappers in the state.

This is coming at a time when Kidnapping in the state has become so alarming and hue and cry have met the criminal act.

The Governor who made the pledge while speaking at a Press Conference at the Government House Umuahi today, Monday, decried the comeback of kidnapping at a very alarming rate in the state.

Politics › The Hidden Truths And Facts About Ojukwu's Role In The 1966 Coup by Youngadvocate(op): 7:23pm On Apr 22, 2017
The man that gave history a meaning, believer and martyr of justice and truth; a man whose achievements and efforts to ensure the unity of Nigeria was guaranteed, who laboured effortlessly to erase the festers of division that beclouded the country in the events to the civil war, he is the man this article talks about.

The narrative of the role Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Ezeigbo Gburugburu, Ikemba Nnewi Nke Mbu, the people's General played in ensuring the civil war was averted and the unity of Nigeria was ensured gives us the balance we have for long, been denied.

Read on...

"Despite the fact that I have serious deadline challenges let me struggle to finish what I started.

For people who still believe Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was just an ambitious young man who wanted a country to rule, hence luring or forcing the Igbos into the Civil War as Biafra, let’s carefully go through these…

1. Emeka Ojukwu was a scholar, who went to one of the best public schools in England, Epsom and of course the best university in the world, Oxford where he obtained both bachelors and masters degrees. Then most Nigerian soldiers hardly attended secondary schools…most were recruited after primary school and concentrated their trainings in combat and related studies. Ojukwu knew the Nigerian Army then was ill-equipped for leadership and believed his dear country was starring doom on the face if the military ever took over the fledging nation.

2. The above reason was why he contributed over 70% in fouling Major Kaduna Nzeogwu’s coup. Again Ojukwu was coming from an enlightened and humane background. Murdering the Emir of Kano and other politicians in Kano in cold blood as Nzeogwu demanded was never part of his orientation. So, he called Nzeogwu’s bluff, contacted General Ironsi in Lagos, advised him to do what he had already done with the fifth infantry battalion in Kano – disarm them, lock up the armoury firmly, keep the keys safely out of reach and confine the soldiers to the barracks. Ironsi took to the advice and firmly secured Lagos just like Ojukwu did Kano. Nzeogwu held only Kaduna…and then later surrendered and was duly put in prison.

3. When Lt. Murtala Mohammed struck in the counter-coup that claimed Ironsi and many Igbo officers the excuse was that the North retaliated against the Igbos for killing mainly Northerners during Nzeogwu’s coup. Murtala, a close friend of Ojukwu, who Ojukwu personally saved from court-martial and dismissal from the Nigerian army while in Congo on a mission, refused to acknowledge the fact that it was still two IGBO officers in Ojukwu and Ironsi that fouled Nzeogwu’s coup.

4. Ojukwu supported Gen Ironsi to take over pending returning the country to civilian rule as quickly as possible. He supported Ironsi not because both were Igbo men but rather that Ironsi was the highest ranked Nigerian Army officer. And he was always quarreling with Ironsi for not taking appropriate steps. In charge of the Eastern region, Ojukwu twice threatened to resign from Ironsi’s government. Major bone of contention was Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Ojukwu wanted Ironsi to immediately release Awo, who was then being held in Calabar prisons. But Ironsi delayed that he was killed without signing the papers which were ready, thanks to Ojukwu’s pressure. So why would Ojukwu want Awo released ? – to usher speedy return to civilian rule. He had then built an enviable career in the army and wouldn’t have participated in such transition.

5. When Ironsi was murdered, Britain immediately put Col Gowon, who they had been cultivating and saw as a willing puppet, in charge. Britain craftily made Gowon inherit the fruits of Murtala’s coup, which got Ojukwu incensed. Brigadier Ogundipe was the next in rank to Ironsi and should have taken over. Even if Ogundipe chickened out, the SMC should have met to agree on the choice of Gowon. Contrary to mischievous tales, planted by the British propaganda machine, Ojukwu never wanted himself to be in charge. Ever foresighted Ojukwu knew his country was toeing destructive paths if the Nigerian Army became tribalised. Already politicians were aligning along ethnic lines. Three major parties before the coup were based in the North, East and West. The Nigerian civil service was regional-ized that personnel only worked within the regions of origin. Ojukwu saw the Nigerian Army as the only entity that could unify the country. He further reasoned that if a Westerner benefited from a Northern coup that chances were the army wouldn’t disintegrate. But Britain, Gowon and the North refused to listen and took over.

6. Gowon, as weak as he was, was only studying the scripts prepared by Britain when the massacre of Igbos erupted in the North. Ojukwu pleaded and pleaded to Gowon to enforce conditions to stop the killings. But Gowon, either intentionally did nothing or was too weak to do something. The killings were mounting in Kano…and Ojukwu tried many times to force his friend the Emir to intervene but nothing came out of it.

7. When the issue of the chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka came up, Ojukwu, as the administrator of the Eastern Region, immediately went for the Emir of Kano. In that ceremony and after the decoration and speech by the Emir, Ojukwu took over. There were many Igbos who fled from the North that trooped the occasion. They went there to hear their leader speak based on the dangerously fragile atmosphere in the country. Ikemba looked at gloom faces and talked to them with the most persuasive voice he could muster. He appealed to them to get back to their bases in the North and resume their normal businesses that Nigeria was not going to crack. He urged them to take the human loses, even though extremely painful, as sacrifices made in course of nation building. With the Emir of Kano nodding nearby in resonance, umu Igbo, including those that were not present, went back to Kano and other parts of the North. Most of them never came back. Till he died one of Ojukwu’s saddest memories is that speech that sent his dear people to their untimely deaths, clobbered and butchered to cruel ends in all manners of brutality known to man.

8. Ojukwu called Gowon and proposed a meeting of the representatives of the four military governors ASAP. Gowon agreed and on August 9, 1966, the meeting held. They came up with one important agreement – that troops be returned to their respective Regions of origin to allow matters to cool down. Ojukwu, a man used to abiding by any agreement mutually reached, escorted all Northern troops in the East to the North, with all their arms. Those arms under the agreement were supposed to be returned. They never were. Eastern troops outside the East never got such favours. They were let loose without arms to make their way home as best as they could, or brought out from their cells and shot.

9. The killing of the Igbos in the North had not truly stopped, making, Ojukwu increasingly restless. He started all manners of talks for a conference to make stern and workable policy statements to restrain the barbaric acts. Gowon, basking in Britain’s rudder dithered. But there was one flicker of hope – the Ad Hoc Constitutional Conference, proposed under Ironsi, was to meet on September 12. Ojukwu hoped this Conference would fast-track the return to civilian rule via a new constitution and the re-democratisation of Nigeria. At that time it was fragile but then two military regimes in six months had done far more damage to Nigeria than the civil run ever did in six years.

10. On the evening of September 11, all Eastern delegates assembled in Enugu, ready for morning take-off to Lagos. But reports started coming in of an outbreak of resumed killings of Easterners in the North. The delegates, with events of May and July/August fresh in their minds, lost their nerves and refused to fly to Lagos the next day. Ojukwu summoned them them to the State House, spent hours and hours going all over again the importance of the conference. For once his power of oratory and conviction failed. Not one delegate agreed to fly to Lagos. Finally exhausted, Ojukwu retired to his private quarters and told his father, who was then back in the East, what happened. Sir Louis Odumegwu, the most influential Igbo in Nigeria left the room. That night, the man went from house to house, urging, exhorting, cajoling the men to change their minds. At midnight he returned to the State House triumphant – he had persuaded them, they would fly to Lagos in the morning. After a last drink with his overwhelmed son, Sir Odumegwu drove same night to Nkalagu, where he was spending the night with friends. At 3.00 a.m, the phone by Ojukwu’s bed rang – his father was seriously ill, possibly dying. Ojukwu left immediately, driving to Nkalagu and arrived just in time to hold his father’s hand for last blessing. Ten minutes later the great man died. Stricken with grief, Ojukwu was at the airport to see the delegates fly off. By midday reports were confirmed that sporadic killing of the Igbos by roving mobs had started again.

11. While the Conference was sitting in Lagos, the killings resumed in fiercer proportions…all parts of the North – Makurdi, Minna, Gboko, Gombe, Jos, Sokoto and Kaduna…then quickly spread to Kano, Zaria, Oturkpo, Bauchi, Zungeru and elsewhere. The message was the same – kill them all. While Igbos were the main targets, others of Eastern origin were not spared. In the main centres like Sabon Gari, hideous massacres took place as mobs but clearly led by soldiers and native police officers…they raged through the streets, hacking, spearing, cutting, chopping and shooting any Easterner they came across. On September 29, Gowon made a broadcast apparently intended to bring the violence to an end. It had exactly the opposite effect – that same day the killings exploded from a brush-fire into an all-consuming conflagration. From early October bodies piled so high in some Northern towns and cities that dustcarts were used to shovel them up and bury them in mass graves outside the city walls. Also the killing of the Easterners started in the West, leading to the inevitable adjournment of the Constitutional Conference on October 3.

12. From now what followed was horrible and difficult for a writer to pen. The Igbos were horrendously so massacred in the North that it was simply a pogrom. Over a million refuges left the North and crammed into the East for Ojukwu to manage. He did, with everything in him but only just. Still he did not go to war. He still sought for dialogue that eventually landed Gowon, Ojukwu and the whole SMC in Aburi, Ghana. The Aburi Accord would have saved Nigeria but Britain, rewrote and gave Gowon the script he put on broadcast, reneging from every agreement reached in Aburi.

13. By now the Igbo professionals, civil servants and business men were urging Ojukwu to declare for war but he deterred. He insisted he would only lead his people to war if Nigeria attacked her. But Gowon blockaded the East, declared a state of emergency in the East as well as divided Nigeria into 12 states all on his own, with Britain, of course. On May 26, 1967 the 335-man Consultative Assembly in Enugu gave Ojukwu mandate to pull the East out of Nigeria. On May 30, the East pulled out of Nigeria.

14. On July 6, 1967, the first shells from the Nigerian artillery landed on the small border town of Gakem. The Civil War had begun.

Yes, Governor Willie Obiano is working. We can see instances of change and improvement on the foundation his predecessors had laid. This has often been somewhat tremendous and laudable. But can we say that Willie is "sincerely" working. With much allegations of substandard projects, uncompleted ones, deliberate deferment of projects and some others serious enough to provoke deep thought, can we again, "truly" say that Willie is "sincerely" working?

A very reliable source shared these pictures on his Facebook page alleging that Anambra state government under Governor Willie Obiano had recently tarred the road. Imagine how substandard the road must have been to have retunred to ruins just a month after.

The source revealed that the government had even misrepresented the location of the tarred road to be Nnewi, right behind IFEANYI UBAH GAMES VILLAGE whereas, it is actually the Ozubulu- Ukpo Road.

He wrote: "Just one week after concluding the road tarred and a soft rain fell ,ladies and Gentleman see the result of what my state did in place of working against the interest of Ndi Nnewi and specifically IFEANYI UBAH . I present to us the state of the road..."

Politics › Photos: Emir Of Kano Visits Governor Willie Obiano, Both Share Words Of Praises by Youngadvocate(op): 7:45am On Apr 22, 2017
Few days after the British Ambassador to NIgeria visited him, Emir of kano HRH SANUSI lamido SANUSI late yesterday paid a coutrtesy visit to the Anambra state Governor, the governor’s lodge Awka, the state's capital.

It was gathered that Emir Sanusi had visited the state to attend the funeral of his friend's relative but sought to stop by and pay the Governor, his longtime friend and former colleague in the banking sector, a deserving homage for his great exploits in the state.

Crime › Two Robbers Who Rob Women Living Alone In Umuahia, Abia State, Nabbed by Youngadvocate(op): 5:30pm On Apr 21, 2017
All day is for the thief but a day is for the owner, they say.

Operatives of the Abia State Police Command yesterday, arrested two young robbers Obinna Anyanwu and Chinedu Awa, ndi ori, who engaged in robbing women that live alone at the Federal Low Cost Housing Estate, Umuahia, one of the women was Mrs Beatrice Okpi.

They were further alleged to have burgled the homes of these women and carted away their clothings, kitchen utensils and other valuables.

The day for the owner came yesterday as they raided the home of one Uche Jonathan, in the Estate hurried to carry two wielding machines valued at N46, 000.00.

While they hesitated in carrying the heavy machines, Uche alerted the residents who assisted to call the Police before the suspects were arrest.

While addressing newsmen in the Abia state capital, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, said: “These same suspects ransacked the shop of Emeka Aharaumunna, at the estate and carted away six generators valued at N450,000.

They also stormed the house of Pastor Gabriel Nwankwo and fired gunshots in an attempt to break into the victim’s house to rob.”

Oyebade revealed that the residents had first caught the thieves before handing them over to the police, adding that they had already confessed to robbing Mrs Okpi’s house in Ohafia, where their ringleader resided.

Obinna who confessed to the allegations claimed his friend, Flex, had initiated him into the crime.  “I have been involved in robbery operations five times,” he said.

However, Chinedu Awa aka Pastor who hailed from Ndi Uduma Awoke, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, denied partaking in the robbery claiming he only bought the stolen items, which he also, claimed, he didn't know were proceeds of the robbery.

He said: “I’m not part of the gang. I only bought some stolen items from them. I didn’t know the items were stolen ones.”

Recovered items from the suspects included, glass table, Tiger generators, two mattresses, one TV set, two DVD among others.

Culture › Igbo Culture Permits Homosexuality...igbos Practice It --- Leo Igwe's Discovery by Youngadvocate(op): 8:30pm On Apr 20, 2017
Leo Igwe wrote on homosexuality or same sex marriage on 23rd June, 2009. I find his article insightful and highly revealing just as much as I find it disturbing.

My worries precede from the distortion of morality and cultural values of the Igbo communities in the article. Igwe failed to address these two issues in his thought or perhaps, to be safer, avoided to express them and establish the relativity between the Igbo cultural values and this practice of same sex marriage.

The article also, adopted the one-sided defensive approach. The writer seemed more to defend the right of the persons excluding the socio-cultural context.

My worries border on the deep intellectual gap in the literature.

Read on...you will discover how and why.

"One of the contentious issues in the debate over homosexuality and same sex marriage is whether a marriage between persons of the same gender is totally alien to African culture and tradition. Those opposing same sex marriage have continued to argue that same gender union is foreign to Africa. On the contrary, I have tried to draw their attention to the fact that there is a strain of the same gender marriage in African tradition, particularly in Igboland. And that we should not rush to deny this, or pretend it does not exist or just sweep it under the carpet in the quest to establish that same gender marriage is alien to the African continent, and must be banned.

I hail from Mbaise in Imo State in Southern Nigeria. Traditionally, in my community, marriage is taken to be a union between a man and a woman as the case may be. But there are circumstances where a marriage between a woman and a woman is permissible.

In a situation where a woman has no son or no child, if the husband dies, it is culturally allowed for her to marry a wife. And in this case, she becomes the husband. Like in every case of marriage, this woman goes out, inquires and gets a wife of her choice. She pays her dowry and fulfills other traditional rites as it is done when a man is marrying a woman.

“Like in every case of marriage, this woman goes out, inquires and gets a wife of her choice.”

After that, the woman brings her "wife" home and they start living together as "husband" and "wife." Nobody frowns at it. To have children, both the "woman-husband" and "woman-wife" will agree to allow a man from the same village or neighboring town to sleep with the wife.

The children born by the wife bear the family name of the woman-husband, not that of the man responsible for the pregnancy. I want to add here that the men who sleep with such wives in most cases are married men. And normally it is regarded as immoral, in fact it is a taboo for a married man to sleep with or "father" children from another woman. But in this case an act normally taken to be immoral is allowed.

This is a situation where people are permitted to break taboos and deviate from traditions. This marriage practice pre-dates Christianity and the so- called western culture which most people today blame for all the moral and cultural wrongs in Africa. The same gender marriage is still practiced till date. In other words, there are some families today in Igboland where women are both husbands and wives, fathers and mothers.

There are some homes where woman-husbands are living happily with their woman-wives, though there are not many such families or marriages. Such unconventional marriages and families are in the minority. The fact is that they exist. The fact is that they are part of the local tradition and culture. They are not imports from the West. And this has in no way undermined social cohesion, public order and morality or family values.

“There are some families today in Igboland where women are both husbands and wives, fathers and mothers.”

Some people have tried to argue that this is not really a case of gender marriage because a man comes in to impregnate the wife. But, traditionally, it is the case and it is known as such. It is a case where a woman marries a woman.
The man who impregnates the wife does not come into the picture at all. He has no family responsibility. His duty is only to supply sperm. The family is responsible for the woman-husband and wife.

Some say that same gender unions destroy family values and undermine the upbringing of children. It should be emphasized that children in this case are brought up in an environment where both "parents" are females. And they grow up to be normal children. Some say because child bearing is involved, then it is not same gender marriage. But my response is this: whether for procreation or for pleasure, it is same gender marriage. And it is the couples, not the state that decides whether to marry for procreation and or for pleasure or for any other purpose they deem fit.

Politics › Nnamdi Kanu Writes: Our Hope Lies In A Peaceful Plebiscite by Youngadvocate(op): 6:32am On Apr 19, 2017
The apparently fearless and vociferous Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in a letter to accpet the election as the leader of Eastern Consultative Assembly, ECA, stated that all the Biafran agitators were asking has always been their freedom and right to decide for themselves which association to belong to, Nigeria or Biafra, through a plebiscite (referendum).

Nnamdi Kanu in the same vein, highlighted the injustices Ndi-Igbo face in Nigeria describing it as “horrendous injustice," especially under the Buhari administration, warning that “the horrendous injustice visited on us daily by our oppressors have since gotten to a point where we can no longer tolerate the position of eternal slavery, which they carefully crafted for us and have ruthlessly executed over the years. Our children today and generations to come do not have a future."

Recall we had reported yesterday of the complete list of elected persons into the leadership of the group which Nnamdi Kanu, although still held in illegal detention at the Kuje prison.

His letter of acceptance read: “With the greatest humility, I accept this clear demonstration of confidence you have reposed in me and wish to thank the entire membership and leadership of ECA for their doggedness in building a wonderful coalition dedicated to the defence of truth at a time when most are too terrified to stand up and be counted.

“I am honoured by this election; I hope all the affiliate groups in this coalition will soon join hands with us in our peaceful and non -violent pursuit of a referendum that will allow the people decide their future.

“The horrendous injustice visited on us daily by our oppressors have since gotten to a point where we can no longer tolerate the position of eternal slavery, which they carefully crafted for us and have ruthlessly executed over the years. Our children today and generations to come do not have a future.

“Our youths are despondent, our once truthful and outspoken elders frightened and silenced, our politicians compromised, our leaders bought over. Our present status as race and a people is one of utter hopelessness and servitude. Our only hope for the future lies in a peaceful plebiscite that will settle once and for all time the burning issues that confront us today. I commend the ECA and strongly believe that I will not let you down. Once again, I say thank you for this great honour.”

In reiteration of the position of Nnamdi Kanu, ECA in a communique issued after the meeting, expressed that false, outrageous and manipulated census figures which gave the north unearned superior majority over the south was one of the major reasons for agitations for the revalidation of the Biafran republic, decrying the lies and manipulation of successive governments at the Federal all to favour the north.

Politics › Federal Govt Should Give South-east, South-south Equal Share --- Orji Uzor Kalu by Youngadvocate(op): 7:16pm On Apr 18, 2017
Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, fmr Abia state governor on Sunday, at the residence of Chief Goddy Imo in Ohafia, Abia state, called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to stop the marginalization of Ndigbo and the South-South and accord them equal opportunity as is given to Northern and South Western states.

He said: “Without equal opportunity extended to Nigerians, regardless of tribal, religious, political and economic differences, it will be difficult to achieve our collective dream of a better Nigeria.

“Ndigbo are not asking for much. They are only seeking for fair and equal opportunity as accorded other tribes.

“To achieve a united country, no one should be exempted from development. All states, especially South-East and South-South ought to be given equal share and opportunity of development. When equal attention is given to every state, it will facilitate development and peaceful cohesion among all.” He stated

The business mogul and Nwafor Igbo in the same vein, called on Nigerians to support Buhari and stop criticizing him, adding that Buhari is performing very well at the moment.

“Those capitalising on the president’s health are ignorant of nature. Anybody can fall sick. The president has been doing well, especially in the area of security. He only needs to fine-tune his economic policies for a turn around.

Although, he added, “Nigerians are not asking for much, they are only asking for food on their table, good health care and security of life and property among other basic necessities.”

He pointed out that hope of the common man is the judiciary, adding that nobody should be above the law.

Crime › Rev Kings And Others To Be Hanged Soon By Lagos State Govt by Youngadvocate(op): 7:07pm On Apr 18, 2017
Rev Chukwuemeka Ezeugo popularly known as Rev. King is on the line to be executed by the Lagos State Government will soon executeas alongside others on death row in Lagos prisons.

State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem confirmed this to PM News at a ministerial press conference in Lagos today, stating that the state government was reviewing the matter with a view to taking a crucial decision very soon.

Recall, the Supreme court had on 27 February 2016 upheld the judgment of the Appeal Court which passed the penalty of death by hanging on Rev. King.

Kazeem revealed that he visited the Lagos state prisons recently and discovered that those on death row were acting as though they had certain rights which excluded them from being executed, stating that the prison officials complained about this conduct and called on the Government to act and remedy the situation.

He further stated that the previous administration had not deemed it fit to sign documents for the execution of convicts on death row but vowed that the Ambode administration was moving towards necessary document to ensure those on death row are executed.

“Lots of people are on death row, Rev. King is not the only one on death row, it is on the instruction of Ambode that I visited the prisons recently and I discuss the issue with the prison officials and they expressed concern. We are moving in that direction of signing. The prison officials said we need to look at that seriously. Those on death row are beginning to think they have some rights. We are going to move in that direction, you will hear from me, but I will not tell you the exact date,” Kazeem said according to reports from PM News.
