There was a long silence. She disentangled herself from me, yawned and stood up. "I feel like going to bed," she said. "Am I permitted to go?" 

 
I stood up too and held her by the waist. "Yes, you can go but there's         something I need to let you know." She looked at me briefly. 

 
“What's that?"

 
 I allowed a meaningful silence. "I love you, Lola. I love you." 

 
“I love you too,” she answered.

Days later, Lola avoided coming into contact with me. I suspected she was trying to find if the whole thing was indeed love or just  infatuation. I allowed her to be. I was not the kind of person that rushed into things. 

 
About a week later, I decided to send a whatsapp message to her. How long will it take you to decide if I really love you or not? I wrote. No reply. I wrote another message: if I don't get a reply, I will take it that you don't love me; and I will stop disturbing you. 

 
This time around, I got a response from her: Don't say what you don't mean. I smiled to myself and gave her a call. 

 
“Hello," I said.

 
“Hi" 

 
“It's time I start  demonstrating my love to you," I said.
