Nairaland is a fantastic forum no doubt. But the two platforms serve different functions. A forum is for discussion while twitter can easily fit into the "question asking" model. Like a text message system, sending a fixed number of words at a time.

If the president was having an online discussion or chat, then Nairaland would have been the perfect model or any other forum. If the media chat was done on a forum board, then you would find someone asking JUST ONE QUESTION and writing a 2-page ESSAY with that one question.

How can any govt take NL seriously when we have topics like "Picture of Davido eating Akpu" or "Help, his dog farts too much. Advice needed",or "Picture of Tiwa Savage pounding yam" makes the front page while serious threads like this are relegated to the background.

dnpasion: It was really a sad day for me because i got Denied today at Lagos Us Embassy and here is how my interview went. Firstly i was bit nervous when answering the questions.

Vo. Why this school?
Me. I chose this uni becos 99% of their classrooms are technology-enabled and the school offers intelligence cognate which combine the key elements of computer science with the skills needed for work in the security and business sector.
Vo. How many schools did you applied to?
Me. 3 and listed but only xyz admitted me.
Vo. Who is Jerry westfall?
Me. Thought he said Jerry Falwel so I said he is the founder of the school because Jerry Falwel is the founder and chancelor of the school not knowing he was referring to Westfall who happens to be one of the prof. In the computer sc. Department.
Vo. Why this major?
Me. I chose this major because almost every major challenge facing society is turning to computing for a solution.
Vo.What will you do after the completion of your study?
Me. Come back for my nysc after that I wish to work for the nigeria government.
Vo. Who is sponsoring you?
Me. My dad
Vo. What does he do?
Me. Business
Vo. Type of business?
Me. He is a major distributors of mouka and yinka oba foam, he is also into sales of building materials.
Vo. How much does it have in bank for your program?
Me. Told him the total on the bank statement but he didn't bother to look at the bank statement.
He typed for some minutes hoping that he is going to give me the green paper but unfortunately he gave me a white paper and said sorry can't grant you a visa.

On the white paper given to me, it was stated there and I quote that: After considering the information you supplied through your visa application, your responses to questions asked durong interview and information available in our databases, the consular officer who conducted your interview determined that you have not demonstrated that you qualify for a U.S. Nonimmingrant Visa.
This may have been because you either did not demonstrate strong ties outside the united states or you were unable to demonstrate that your intended activities would be consistent with the type of visa for which you applied.

There might have been some factors that influenced the denial. One is, if the consular officer was asking about a professor in the department you were supposed to start in, and you supposedly gave another name, (like you did, i think).. he would think you don't know much about the school you are going to. Some officers, will deny solely based on that, without the interview going further from that point.

But, the interview went on, without him questioning you about being wrong with the name he asked about. That means, he is trying to give you more chance with the interview. I think what made him eventually deny you, is because of your sponsor's (dad) financial status. 'Business' as a source of income, is unpredictable in the real sense. If it was a monthly salary, (even politicians - "public servants" have a monthly salary) it could have given your interview a boost, because he would have probably just requested for his pay stub or something.

Truth is, they know anyone especially desperate Nigerians, can put together multi-millionaire naira bank statement, so they most times are not interested in it.

I wish you luck next time in your interview, bro. Luck really matters.

kaytee07: Thanks peeps. Interview was yesterday @ the Lagos Embassy with a black American guy. Here's how it went: Can't even remember if I greeted him.
VO: Please pass your documents
Me: Passed my docs (Passport, I-20, Admission letter, etc)
VO: What course are you going to study?
Me: Business administration and Management
VO: Why did you choose Bleep University?
Me: Spoke about the courses and how each of those courses can help achieve my overall career objective here in Nigeria
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I said "three" and mentioned them
VO: Why did you choose this school over the two?
Me: Re-iterated the answers I gave to the first question
VO: Did you write GMAT?
Me: Yes, I passed my score sheet (he looked through and passed it back)
VO: Who's paying for your education?
Me: My mum
VO: What does she do?
Me: I explained
VO: What do you do presently?
Me: I work with a company (mentioned the name) as an associate in the xyz unit
All the while, he was typing. When he finished, he gave me a white collection form and said "Your visa has been approved, pick it up @ ikeja on..." (didn't hear the guy after that)
That was the end of the interview. The only supporting document he requested was my GMAT score report. All glory to God

I'm back on this thread after a while off. One of my last few posts on this thread was that, it is relatively easy to get a U.S student visa if you are going for graduate studies i.e Master's Degree.

Congratz!!

nex: Someone just mentioned that D'Banj's music is Afro Hiphop. Please, desist from such misinformation.

As a matter of fact, I must first start by saying that this is not music. Like D'Banj has often said, he's an entertainer. He's simply a Milli Vanilli. He needs a songwriter, a vocalist, a producer, so that all he will do is go on stage and mime the song. If he continues to deceive his new American partners that he can create music, he'll end up on the road he's been headed since the past few months, which is utter failure.

Eh wo!! Lol.. See "pure" beef. I smell #TeamDonJazzy

Nigerians!! Smh... You can never satisfy them.. That is one of the reasons the whole country in wallowing in so much problems.

If, and only If, Gangnam Style was shot and released by a Nigerian in Nigeria, trust me NBC and Nigerians would condemn it, not to talk of it becoming a HIT song- it would NEVER have had so much popularity and youtube views. It currently tops the chart all over the world.

Everyone condemns his songs...And each time D'Banj wins an award, they wonder why.

Okay guys.. It is time to end it all here for me because I am out of this thread..

This post below was just posted on facebook by a classmate of mine in University while I was in Nigeria. He was a VERY OPTIMISTIC PERSON about Nigeria and state of things in Nigeria (6-7years ago or thereabout). We even had a little argument about how things were going back then..

This is what he posted just today (4 hours ago) on his facebook wall. Btw, he is a very patriotic Nigerian in Nigeria and a doctor too.

#Thinking about today's 21st century Nigeria:
She's 52 yet

Corruption is rife in every nook & cranny;

Light and water are scarce resources- floods are even commoner;

Intl reputation is @ lowest ebb (pilgrims bein deported);

Sports sector has become epileptic;

Oil-producer whose citizens can hardly buy petrol freely & cheaply;

Her currency, and the economy are nothing to write home about;

Parallel govts being run by- FG, Boko Haram, & others....

Phew!
I ONLY HOPE IT'S TRULY DARKEST JUST BEFORE THE LIGHT/SUNRISE!!

Why then are you deceiving yourselves about state of things?? and saying those in Diaspora are bitter??

I am out of this thread!

Billyonaire: You tried to make a little sense, but as I read on, you derailed to some sinister cheap punk tactics. When you mention 3 names of people who were not recognized, did you care enough to mention the names of the captains of Industries and Capitalist venturers who have blessed be awared honors by the Government. Do you think running away from Nigeria will make Nigeria better, I say Hell No!, Only cowards will run away from where there is work to be done to fix a broken and battered country. The truth remains that those countries you reside are adopted home, at some point in your life, you will want to come back to your natural home either as aged old man without natural history back here or as a dead meat popularly called Corpse, and hey, charter flights cost a lot to bring in dead body, you better save well well.

You still dont make sense to me!!!

Can you hear yourself out, while typing?

FYI, I didnt run away from Nigeria and I visit Nigeria regularly and still do, just as every other person living abroad.

And yeah i said earlier, those who deserved the awards got it, an example is Abacha's son with the highest title in Ijawland and many people with awards in Nigeria. There are sooooo many titles and awards in Nigeria as long as you have money. Nothing works, Nothing is by merit - not even contracts, educational system, judicial system, governmental parastatals.

I dont want any award in Nigeria, Thank you smiley

Cos I do not understand why, you guys think we do not visit those countries you slave for. I come there, dine and wine and shop for things I need to clean my toilet then remember that there is Nigeria to build, so I think your braincells need mechanics.

Yeah there is a Nigeria to build?? Guy, Stop joking and face reality.

Nobody cares for you in Nigeria, nobody gives a poo. You build it and they name you after a tiny street in your hometown in Oshogbo or build you a statue. Lmao.

I bet you can ask Anikulapo's family or M.K.O Abiola's family, how it feels to want to be the hero.

Can you tell me where Rashidi Yekini is today and how well he was treated while alive??

Do you know how many Nigerian athletes represented other countries in the just concluded Olympic Games? Do you know how many Nigerian Doctors are in the US? They all made the right decisions by taking care of themselves and their immediate family, thereby contributing their little quota to the development of the Nigeria.

You are a no-brainer if you want to be a (Nigerian) nation builder.

One man told me, if you bring all Nigerians to the United States or U.K, the system will turn corrupt and spoilt. (Electricity, Water Supply, Roads, Infrastructures, Politics!! etc). And if you do vice versa, take all Americans to live and settle in Nigeria, She will be the world's envy and the NEW AMERICA.

So true!!

@OP was not well informed before making such post in the first place. He is not aware that surprisingly, Nigerians abroad say many good things about the country to foreigners and are always proud to say they are from Nigeria. Foreigners even respect us because of how we portray ourselves and the country in general. Where I am, we are proud to speak our language, and they ask us what language is that? We tell them and they even ask us to teach them. How then are we bitter about the country?

They ask us about the bomb-blast, we tell them, it is only a particular part of the country and the country is very peaceful. An American even offered to visit Nigeria, but said he would when next i am coming back home, so he will be able to know where to visit.

Another bad thing is, as a Nigerian.. you are most likely to lose out on opportunities when they know where you are from, because of the image of the country to the outside world.

You are the one not psychologically and mentally aware of what is going on, because the society you are in, has affected your thinking faculty.

You in Nigeria, contribute meaningfully by voting in corrupt leaders regime in and out to govern you and walk around freely, after stealing your funds and also sponsoring his bossom friend or son or younger brother to power (and the cycle continues), while University students who stole mobile phones and laptops are killed like chickens.

Or is it not Nigerians that contribute meaningfully to growth of country than those in diaspora that conferred Abacha's son the highest title in Ijawland?

You need to start thinking properly bro, because i think you are mentally impaired.

Three University of Port Harcourt students named Ugonna, Aladdin and Chidiaka were this morning badly beaten and burnt alive by indegenes of Aluu community for allegedly stealing phones and laptops in an off campus hostel...

Instead of calling the police and getting them arrested, these people put tyres over the heads of these students who were not armed and burnt them. Then they took pictures, filmed it and spread it around. This happened today in PH. We are gradually losing our humanity in this country. The boys were all in their early 20s. I hope some people get arrested for this. More photos after the cut...*viewer discretion advised*

Politics / Nigerian President Goodluck To Visit The Moon On Historic Journey by zerocool(m): 5:09pm On Jun 22, 2012
Abuja – Plans have been concluded to send the Nigerian President, Mr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on a historic flight to the moon.

President Jonathan will be the first sitting President to visit the moon and probably the first President in space.

According to a presidential spokesperson, the mission will establish Nigeria as one of the super-powers of the world.

Reactions to the planned space travel have been mixed. While some experts have noted that there is nothing of economic importance on the moon, ordinary Nigerians have decried the mission calling it a flagrant waste of resources and ill-timed at best – considering the crisis currently plaguing the nation.

Reacting to this, the Nigerian minister of Information, Labrat Maku, declared that the President can rule from anywhere in the Universe.

A Russian Buran space shuttle with a payload to orbit specification of 3,810kg (53,600 lb) has been acquired for the mission. The spacecraft would be painted in the colours of the Nigerian flag and be known as Space-Force 1 while conveying the President.

It is not yet known whether the first lady would accompany her husband on this ground breaking journey.
