Okocha, kanu and even Mikel are players I was expecting to play till 35yrs because they Rely more on techniques as midfielders. |

Kog45: There is no need bringing another angle to incident that was cleared for everyone to see.Boni should just do better next time,it happens between players but better to calm down in such situation. I think you need to rewatch the incident, Boniface was calm and flared up just after his teammate said something to him. Boniface is not insane to just want to attack his team mate. A jovial and too playful(sometimes) getting that angry all of a sudden, you need to be there or have first hand info to conclude. |

Tuface Idibia sang it in only me "I know say e no be everybody e sabi play ball But arise, o compatriot, if Nigeria call" You are the one rewriting history, cos the rumor then for this line was because Mikel snub 2face in London, which I think Mikel even clear the air of recent. Bannedlargejr: As much as people are criticizing carraghah, objectively he voiced the thoughts of most European judges, journalists and agents regarding Afcon. To Africans, afcon is a big tournament but to the European judges and agents, afcon isn’t a major tournaments in the rank of a World Cup, EU or champions league and all the backlash wouldn’t change it. This is a tournament that, Egypt won thrice in a row and none of its players won the APOY during that period. Spain won the world cup and Euro Cup at one time, and none of its players were considered for World best or ballon d'or. Meaning world cup and Euro is not a major tournament. Make we all begin reason anyhow. |

TheLoneCitizen: 100% a major tournament.
My pick out is the the context.
He said it's not big enough to decide Balon D'Or against EUROS and Copa and I see the light.
Not in terms of quality but it's lack of equivalent prestige due to its timing and double jeopardy.
But in hindsight, Jamie Carragher has just boosted the prestige of the tournament.
There'll be a lot of emotional voting this Balon Dor and it will take a miracle for Salah not to win it. What are you even saying, no prestige as regard ballon d'or? 🙄 has Salah ever won Afcon or finish as highest goal scorer as same time performing very well for Liverpool and was deny ballon d'or? Salah not winning ballon d'or or World best has nothing to do with Afcon cos at no time has he win best player of the tournament of recent. |

Goke7: Took them almost 10 years to win
The issue with Afcon just like the World Cup you may have like 5 teams who are at their peak same period so it becomes an issue of survival and luck with referees. How can you imagine the Eagles beaten by Cameroon at the national stadium in 2000. Both teams were too a-washed with the best of African players in that era. Same thing with the last Afcon, Morocco, Senegal, DRC, Mali, any of those countries could have won it. Eagles were not beaten by Cameroun. We lost via penalty |

JohnBullMySon: Then you didn't listen to Jamie cause he never even mentioned AFCON. He said he thinks Salah is finding the Balon d'or diffcult because he doesn't play for a team in a major event like the Euros. And those that played for the so called 'major tournament' like the Euros, how many has won ballon d'or base on their performance at the euros which is every 4yrs and ballon d'or is annually. |

JohnBullMySon: Proven what? What did they prove?
I understand the sentiment though. We are all Africans and we love the AFCON so naturally we support our own. However, you and I know the honest truth. No football fan in his right mental state will think that Afcon and Euros are equal in terms of quality. You guys are saying something else, who's comparing Euros to Afcon. Is Afcon a major tournament, that's the bone of contention. If you say NO then you mention the major tournaments you know. |

TheLoneCitizen: Like It's not brain surgery.
Move this to summer and it improves the quality of the players, quality of the tournament, appeal of the tournament.
"Like how are you a major tournament if other tournaments refuse to stop for you? Don't they stop for other continental tournaments?"
Unbeknownst to the person that actually it's the other way round every single other tournament stops for domestic football to conclude first.
But father Africa, playing a game invented by the white man, is too big to stop for the white man. colonial mentality. The EPL should go on a fews weeks break just like some other European league to accommodate the Afcon which is every 2yrs. |

TheLoneCitizen: Exactly my point.
World Cup was held in Southern hemisphere because it is their coolest period, meaning a compromise is possible.
So why can't you just continue this, AFCON in southern hemisphere until the Northern hemisphere is rich enough to afford AC stadium like Qatar?
No? AFCON must be held in northern hemisphere because that's where all the footballing nations are. Isn't that stubbornness?
"which actually favoured the Europeans" my good man, it favoured the whole world. Even Africans cannot play in that heat.
Qatar cannot host in summer, but they hosted in a period (November) which is the same as West Africa's hottest.
"The tournament is for Africans", but you think holding it in a period where you're worried about winning league title and progressing from your Afcon group in the same month favours the player.
That you always have to choose between country and club. That you always have to give 50% for country so you don't return injured?
"Has that stopped European clubs?"
Fergie, one of the most dominant managers in history refused Africans just for this reason. Pep likely same. Mourinho who loves Africans fought Mikel over AFCON. Klopp called it a small tournament over this reason.
But yes, it doesn't play on the minds of clubs. We should adjust timing of Afcon because of EPL that's exactly what you're saying without shame. A whole continent should adjust prestige tournament so deer to them because of EPL. Cos other European league go on a short Christmas break so doesn't affect Afcon timing that much like the EPL. And that's where the major complain is coming from. Shame. |

TheLoneCitizen: I'm not talking sponsors my good man. I'm talking viewership.
AFC Asian Cup dwarves AFCON in terms of sponsorships but cannot even smell the prestige of the latter. i get you Euros definitely on top for viewership. But I'll need a credible stat to decide between copa American and Afcon cos the last Afcon was something else. |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by zicky(m): 5:37pm On Feb 25, 2025 |
TheLoneCitizen: They are all on the same level in terms of quality.
But in terms of prestige, EURO and Copa América clears this.
Why? Because attention is what buys prestige.
You can't have attention when you're a leftover.
You know the funniest thing, Copa América is played at a time that possibly only 10% of football fans have watched a full 90.
But why is it prestigious? Because it becomes the main topic during this period.
Imagine Nigeria crashing out of AFCON and the first thing on a fan's mind is "thank God he will play against Manchester City."
Now compare that to the thoughts of a Madrid fan when Vinicius exits the Copa América.
AFCON is supposed to be bigger than EUROS. Outside the sponsorship, which is what you might refer as prestige there's much difference between the Euros and Afcon. And I stand to be corrected Afcon is more exciting and glamorous than the copa American. I don't really rate that tournament cos I've never watched it. |

TheLoneCitizen: By the way, Caraggher was right.
AFCON is still not a big enough tournament to decide the Ballon d'Or. Is Euto or Copa American big enough to determine Ballon d'or? Mbappe should win Euro and not perform for Madrid and see if he will win The Ballon d'or. Winning euro, Afcon or copa America with performing in your league or winning the world cup will not give you ballon d'or. So yes he might be right but it's not just Afcon |
