Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has said he is proud to have been the President under whom Nigeria made her best improvement in the Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International.
Jonathan stated this in a press statement sent to DAILY POST on his behalf by his former Special Assistant on New Media, Reno Omokri.




The statement was a response to claims by former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) boss, Farida Waziri, in which she said at an interactive session in Lagos that she will kneel down to thank former President Goodluck Jonathan for sacking her as the commission’s boss.
According to Mrs Waziri, had she not been sacked by the ex-President, she would have been traumatized by now, given the ongoing revelation of alleged grand corruption that took place under the last administration.
However, Jonathan said that Farida Waziri has a history of badmouthing former Presidents to enter the good books of the incumbent President.




He said: “My attention has been drawn to comments made by Farida Waziri to the effect that she was removed as Chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission because of a particular case she was handling.




“Mrs. Waziri also said that she received a call from Aso Rock over this case which instructed her to drop her investigations.
“It is understandable that when there is a new government in power, people would want to ingratiate themselves to the new administration and one of the easiest way to do this is by demonizing the previous government.
“Nigerians will remember that Mrs. Farida Waziri was appointed as the chairperson of the EFCC by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua in May 2008 under very controversial circumstances after the unceremonious removal of the pioneer Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu.
“It will be recalled that after she was appointed, Mrs. Farida Waziri made some uncomplimentary remarks against former President Olusegun Obasanjo because he said “I know that the woman they brought in to replace Ribadu (Farida Waziri) was not the right person for that job”.



“In response to that statement, Mrs. Farida Waziri described ex-President Obasanjo as a man known for “speaking in a manner that betrays his status as an elder statesman”. She also accused President Obasanjo of ‘mischief’.
“Farida Waziri made those comments to ingratiate herself to the then administration and her accusations against former President Obasanjo were denied.
“Mrs. Farida Waziri also accused her predecessor, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, of being used by former President Obasanjo “to push the aborted third term agenda”. And claimed to have been Mr. Ribadu’s instructor at the Police Academy.
“Again, her comments were found to be untrue and Malam Ribadu released a statement then and said as follows;




“This is a unclad lie that she keeps flaunting to seek undue relevance and validate her own appointment. At no time in my career did I work under the same section or unit as her. In fact, contrary to the Waziri’s claim that she ‘trained’ me, it was I that actually lectured her and others, on fraud investigation and prosecution, when she was newly posted as Head of Special Fraud Unit even though she was my senior in rank.
“That Mrs. Farida Waziri has a history of telling lies against former Presidents in order to ingratiate herself to the serving President is an established fact and old habits die hard.
“I never called Farida Waziri from the Aso Rock Presidential Villa or any State House at any given time, neither did he ask her to drop or take up any investigation.
“Let it be known that there is no statute of limitations on corruption cases and if Mrs. Farida Waziri has any evidence that she was asked to drop any cases of corruption, she is challenged to show proof of such.




“I fired Mrs. Farida Waziri for reasons he would choose not to disclose publicly for now, but Nigerians may want to remember that Nigeria continued to sink in Transparency International’s annual Corruption Perception Index during Mrs. Waziri’s tenure at the EFCC.
“Things got so bad at her last year at the EFCC (2011) that we moved from 134 in 2010 to 143 in 2011 which represented a backward movement of 9 points. Which God fearing leader would leave a person responsible for such retrogression as the head of a sensitive institution as the EFCC.
“It would also be recalled that the transparency website, Wikileaks, exposed that both the US Federal Bureau of Investigations and the London Metropolitan Police refuses to cooperate with the EFCC under Farida Waziri because of doubts they had about her credibility. Those Wikileaks cables are still publicly available.
“However, after the sack of Mrs. Waziri in 2011, Nigeria made her highest improvements in the annual Corruption Perception Index till date in 2014 when we moved eighth places from 144 to 136, so in essence the facts speak for themselves.




“I am proud to have been the President under whom Nigeria made her best improvement in the Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International. That is a fact. And so he is not concerned about the opinion of Farida Waziri or other persons as opinions cannot overthrow facts.”

Lecturers in Colleges of Education under the auspices of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) on Friday accused the federal government of stalling the growth of workers in the nation’s Colleges of Education through the Non promotion of lecturers in the system and withholding their checkoff dues in total violation of the Trade Union Act.
The lecturers are not happy with the government over the stalling of renegotiation of its agreement with unions in the Sector, blaming the leadership of the Committee of Provosts for the stalled renegotiation and called on the Minister of Education to immediately call call the leadership to order or face a nation wide Industrial action.





Addressing a news conference in Abuja, National President of the Union, Comrade Nuhu Ogirima said the union was giving the government two weeks within which to call the Chairman of the Committee of Provost, Prof Okechukwu Ogbuagu to order and recommence the renegotiation or face what he called system shut down”
He also accused the Accountant General of the Federation of withholding check off dues of members of the union and contributions of staff into the staff welfare cooperative society in contravention of the Trade Union Act.
While describing the action of the Accountant General as unacceptable, Comrade Ogirima said the Trade Union Act stipulates that check off dues shall be deducted from staff and remitted to the unions within two weeks, pointing out that it is an act of illegality for the government, through the Accountant General to hold on to union dues.





He explained that the explanation from the office of the Accountant General was that the government has recently developed a new template for the payment of salaries which does not recognize check off due, adding that such an action was unacceptable as it violates the laws of the land.
He reminded the Accountant General that withholding cooperative contributions from workers was also an illegal act saying “do we really need to remind government t that the deductions for cooperative societies are hard earned monies of staff struggling for survival amidst the contemporary exploitative and harsh economic realities of our dear country?
Ogirima complained of the the shortfall in their salaries since 2015 and the Non payment of Peculiar Academic Allowances since 2014, saying “we know that the government is making effort to pay other sister institutions such allowances, bug in our own case, they are not bothered”.





He expressed sadness that despite the Paris Club refund to states, several state government have refused to pay the salaries of lecturers in their Colleges of Education ranging from 8 to 28 months.
He accused the Kaduna and Niger state governments of refusing to implement the CONPCASS salary structure in their states, but instead are still paying their lecturers based on the old CONTISS.
He asked the Governors of the two states to take verifiable steps towards Implementing the current salary structure for the Colleges of Education, while asking the various states owing arrears and salary and promotion to commence immediate payment or face Industrial action.






He said the government should not hold them responsible for any break down if Industrial harmony in the Sector, stressing they may be compelled to “do what we are not known for. We have refrained from going on strike because of the respect we have for the President and because of the intervention of National Commission for Colleges of Education. But our patience is running out”.

Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) has threatened to resume strike over failure of the Nigerian government to honour the agreement earlier reached with the union in September.

A meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the three non- teaching staff in the universities comprising SSANU, non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and NAAT has been fixed for next Tuesday to fix a day to commence the action

SSANU National President and Chairman of JAC, Comrade Samson Chijioke Ugwoke, stated this yesterday while speaking at the 32nd National Executive Council (NEC), meeting at University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Ugwoke said that the Union is not intimidated by the plan by the federal government to implement the no work, no pay policy, stressing that “it will be morally and legally wrong if the government should go contrary to the agreement it entered into with the association and expect SSANU not to react”.

He also condemned the continuous victimisation of some of its members by the authorities of University of Abuja and the alleged plan to hand over staff school of the University to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), State Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB).

Ugwoke lamented that that the federal government has failed to implement all the agreements it entered into with the union before the industrial dispute declared by it was called off.


He said: “We had issues like earned allowances, short falls in salary, staff schools matter, non- implementation of the judgment of the National Industrial Court which we got against the federal government to recall all teachers back to their offices etc, we had an MoU with the federal government in January after a one week warning strike.

“From January to September, the federal government did not do anything as regards the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed in January and that necessitated our second strike which was indefinite.

“We entered into an MoU on salary shortfalls, a development that has never happened before in the university system where staff are paid fractional salaries.

“We objected to that and the federal government promised the money. Information reaching me shows that up till now, not all the universities have received the shortfall.”
