A 23-year-old man, Samson Olajide,
yesterday escaped being lynched after
he was caught attempting to kidnap a
one-year-old boy in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti
State. The incident which occurred at the Ita-
Imesi area of the town, it was gathered,
created panic in the town as women
were seen running helter-skelter in
search of their children of their children
where abouts. The suspected kidnapper, according to
an eye witness, who spoke under the
condition of anonymity, was caught in
the early hours of the day while
struggling to squeeze the victim into an
empty sack.

The source said, “A commercial
motorcycle who had gone to a nearby
bush to defecate saw the suspect in the
act. He quickly rushed to Samson and
began to question him. When Samson
couldn’t give a reasonable explanation about what he was doing there and
how he came about the little boy, he
slapped the suspect and hurriedly raised
the alarm, calling on his colleagues and
people nearby. Immediately people got
to the scene they gave the suspect the beating of his life while some suggested
he should be burnt to death.” The suspect was, however, lucky not to
have been killed, as he was dragged to
the palace of Alaaye of Efon Alaaye, Oba
Emmanuel Aladejare, who pleaded with
the angry youths to hand over the
suspect to the police.

The suspect was later released and
whisked away by the police after the
youths’ earlier resistance to the
monarch’s suggestion. The suspect who was questioned before
the arrival of the police could not
disclose what he intended to do with the
little boy or mention those who sent him. All efforts to get the police public
relations officer, Alberto Adeyemi,
comment on the incident were abortive
as calls put accross to him were not
answered; neither did he call back by
the time of filling this report
