I have a theory about why religious leaders want their establisments to reopen now.
For generations, they have been telling the faithful that they need to worship together to benefit from the blessings of god.
'You cannot pray from home on your own on a Friday (if you are Muslim) or on a Sunday (if you are Christian).'

Now, people are not going to church or mosque, and the world has not fallen down around them. The leaders are scared.
People will refuse to return after the pandemic is over.
Afterall, god did nothing to prevent it, and anyway staying at home did not bring the world down. Infact, not going to church or mosque helped in reducing the spread of covid-19.

In Nigeria, you actually need PhD as part of the requirements to become a professor:

- PhD in a relevant area of specialization; from a licensed university; and accredited course of study (for medical scientist, a professional fellowship can be accepted in lieu of PhD).

- Teaching in a university or other tertiary institution.

- Twelve years experience that may span through Lecturer 2, Lecturer 1, Senior Lecturer and Associate Prof positions. This means three years each in these cadres. Some just add up the twelve years without considering the number of years spent on each cadre.

- Assessment by professors from same field.

I think these are all I can remember for now. A Nigeria university, statutorily won't give professors without all these. You can become a professor after only five years after your PhD in SA, I know that. After getting it, you can come back to the country to claim your professorship and they will employ you as one. However, they won't give you same privilege of "accelerated" avenue/guidelines as SA. The guidelines are different. There are lot of nuances in this thing tho. It isn't that simplistic.

My Masters supervisor in the UK was a professor. He did not have a Ph.d and he supervised Ph.d students.
