From a technical point of view, Beowulf is not considered animation. Compare to movies like Ratatouille that was hand-animated althrough, for beowulf a cheat technique called motion capture was used which can be picked up by anybody, So beowulf is not a creative stuff to me.

i shuttled between maya and max for modelling, vray was used to render, photoshop was then used to add the background and colour-correction.

How come you have maya in ur name? you must be a maya user

the logical answer to your question would be to pool our resources together and work in unison. i.e synergy.
but factoring the physical distances and different locations in which we work and reside into the equation, then working together would require some sort of correspondence between the participating parties

The peak is looking good the only issue is the texture was cut-off at the top of the tin.

Hey jemit, how r u doing. It's been a while. I've been seeing your stuffs around, keep it up.

To make your scene next to real photograph, you have to understand the basics of lighting, study how light affects your environment, you can also study real photograph to figure out what is missing in your scene like surface detail, specularity, reflections and so on.

As you might have learnt there are you major ways of rendering a scene, you either do direct illumination or indirect illumination(GI). To really achieve something realistic, you have to use indirect illumination(GI) which produce more accurate illumination. For more info you can search Google for tutorials on rendering with GI using mental ray.

Hope have been able to help in a way.

3dsmax is good for modeling and rendering. While maya is more suitable for animation and effects.

I think Cyberlink PowerDVD is awesome. I recommend it to everyone

i think we should only be talking about freeware apps instead of softwares that you have to pay hundreds of dollars for and can't still even perform half of what the free apps can do.

If you use VLC, you can also take snapshots by navigating to video>snapshot. I think there's a bug with the snapshot function for media classic player File>Save image, it doesn't work for me.
