Before they decided to go in search of Coxson at that time of the night they must have done everything humanly possible to get him during the day to no avail,debtors always play the seek and hide game especially when if they intentionally don't want to pay.
From the story as narrated by the fifth guy the boys were not aware that he was with a gun until they were apprehended by the vigilante,beside it took about 8hrs before the boys were burnt and was enough for Coxson to convince the mob that he owed the boys and they were at his place to retrieve the money owed to them and not to rob him.
The point is Coxson wanted them killed simple,no two ways about it.

A criminal on run(A fugitive) will make the following mistakes.
1. call his family,friends and loved ones for money,accommodation etc
2. He would keep thinking of the fears if he is cut, his fears been on the run which can slow him down
3. Retail shops will be his point of target where he can steal to get money or attack people who are less armed.
4. The power of media will surely bring him out forward to the public viewings.
