Godogwu:

Its also in the same us that 50% of the population live on food stamps and another 15-25% are working class people doing menial jobs and mind you if food stamps were taken away by the government, then a whole lot of americans would live on less than that 5 dollars a day.

The way you guys flaunt your stats is just too alarming... 50% on food stamps? shocked shocked shocked shocked

That means 160+million people on food stamps? That means, if there are 100 nairalanders on here, there's a strong possibility that 50 of us are on food stamps? LOL, smh @ ignorance.

15-25% working class doing menial jobs? LOL, menial jobs like? If a whooping almost 25% is in working class doing menial jobs, that means the middle class (the main bracket of U.S. economic contribution), is in serious dilemma...SMH again. Ask your self, what % of people are below poverty line, as opposed to the middle class, then re-educate yourself again.

Can those based in Nigeria outline what Nigeria has to offer expats(of Nigerian ancestry) who have never lived there, or were not raised there(and probably have no immediate families in Nigeria)

I want to buy a house in Nigeria, however, I don't trust most of these bogus websites and the land thing...

[quote author=]May will say i'm being selfish, or 'dont want them to come' as most of our people do when I or any american born Nigeria tells them that they're wasting their time trying to come here. I figured I leave the truth out here because many of our people are dying, and ending up in prisons, more importantly committing unnesscary acts of desperation in the name of obodo oyibo while many that live here are trying to go back to Nigeria because they know the truth.

your "analysis" is full of holes - first of all you leave out the main reason why nigerians are desperate to leave nigeria, why dont you start by addressing the complete and utter failure of the nigerian govt to provide a decent standard of living for its people, how about the fact that nigeria under instructions from its western masters continues to implement economic policies that have succeeded in reducing nigerians to some of the world's most impoverished people, despite its vast oil and gas reserves. yes, many nigerians are dying in US prisons but what would have been the alternative for them back home? armed robbery, kidnapping, prostitution, looting of the national treasury? nigeria is a kleptocracy - a country run by criminals and bandits there is no law and order, no security, no safety net for the poor and vulnerable - nothing - its a dog eat dog society where everyone lies and cheats in order to survive - why would any sane person want to live in such a place - lets face it the only people who voluntarily choose to live in nigeria are criminals aka politicians and their friends and cronies, the rest ie the teeming struggling masses have no choice.

If you can make it in the US, you can make it in Nigeria

We too often attribute success to geographic location. While location is important for many things and some environments are more conducive than others, the US is not the place to come if you want to be rich, and more importantly if you want to be rich AVOID europe. The reason is because this is the land of the middle class. Going to school and working hard is going to land you in the middle class. You will live in a modest home, drive a modest car, and be able to cloth and feed yourself well. This is not rich. The problem in Nigeria is the middle class is rare so people don't know what it is.
Middle class people buy everything using loans for the bank. That's what you have to do in america. You don't own your home, you don't own your car, and you have to pay thousands for school after you finish. This is how many Nigerian Americans get 'trapped' in the US. Because they are middle class they can't pay off these loans quickly and it often takes decades to be debt free, but nearly all americans are in debt.
This is why many can't return as freely as they wish, and why many are dying from stress. In the US it's difficult to become rich for a black person. If you want to be rich here you start a business and hope it work, but there are so many businesses doing so many things that have been around for literally 100-50 years and are worth billions that it's hopeless to start because they will easily crush you.

I agree with some of this apart from your statement that if you can make it in the US you can also make it in nigeria - sorry but thats bollocks.

first of all there is no way you can compare the two countries when it comes to survival - - the US provides jobs for its citizens and has a fully functional welfare system. If you are unemployed in america you wont starve or have to resort to criminal activity in order to eat, can the same be said about nigeria? people who are hard up in the US could never survive in nigeria, being hard up in the west means not having money to buy nice clothes, gadgets, meals in fancy restaurants, vacations abroad etc being hard up in nigeria means being destitute and hungry.

yes, america is not a place where you can become rich especially if you are black but there's a reason for that - america was founded by rich white slave owners and merchants the descendants of those people still run and control america - a black man can only become rich in america or europe if the white man says so, no black man in the west is rich without the white man's authorisation - why? because the white man set up the system and he runs and owns it.

In the western world the richest people are rich not due to hard work but because their great great grand parents were slave owners or merchants, the richest 1% of america own over 60% of america's wealth - these people are so powerful that they own all the banks, multinational corporations and media conglomerates, blacks only become rich in america if this group allows them to do so.

Europe is even worst. Europe is a socialist system with very high taxes that keeps anyone from being too rich or too poor. You will live in comfort in the US and Europe but it's not a land of 'wealth', it's a land of order and function.

this used to be true but times are changing - as we speak britain is dismantling the welfare state and america is also doing the same, so you will find that in a couple of years time europe and america will be exactly like nigeria where you can be either very rich or very poor and the middle class will be completely wiped out just as it was in nigeria in the 1980s following nigeria's involvement with the IMF.

Those Nigerians that make it in the US or Europe are actually a rare and special breed. They have drive, a vision, opportunity and most importantly a plan. I will say that anyone with these traits will make it in Nigeria as well. The difference is your money goes further in Nigeria than it does in the US. A person worth 1 million USD in New York can still struggle to pay bills because they're so high. If you have 5000 USD in Nigeria you can live like Jay-z half a year.

I disagree - nigeria is a corrupt country where nothing works and the rule of law is non existent as a result illiterates and bandits run the country while intellectuals, academics, inventors and innovators remain on the bottom rung of society - this is the reason why many of these kind of people have left nigeria for the western world where they can at least earn enough to pay for a roof over their heads and feed themselves and their families.

these people can not survive in nigeria because their talent and skills will never be recognised by the illiterate bandits and thugs who run nigeria also nigerians are have been brought up to think as consumers not as innovators or inventors - this is one of the main reasons why it has been so easy for the west to exploit and ra.pe nigeria.

Returnee Nigerians are Liars
Many Nigerians return from the west with sll types of clothes, new cars, and begin building homes in their villages. They create the illusion that they've 'made it', and use their return to flaunt their 'wealth' instead of helping their brethren. This is a lie. Don't believe them. These people know 2-3 years in advance they're going to Nigeria. It's then that they begin saving the money they will use to show off for December. I've know many that go to the bank and acquire loans so that they can buy objects they'll use to fake as if they're rich in Nigeria. Many will neglect their bills and debts so that they can keep up the image of someone that is rich in Nigeria. Many of the people in Nigeria flaunting are poor people.
This is the home of a Nigerian American i know

at least he has a roof over his head, a roof under which electricity and water runs constantly. also i'm very sure that he doesnt live in fear of armed robbers and kidnappers turning up on his doorstep.

the reason that nigerians who live abroad lie is because if they tell the truth everyone will look down on them, nigerian society is all about lies, being fake, talking big and pretending to be what you are not so it should not come as a suprise that a nigerian flying in from america or europe will do or say anything to appear as if he's a millionaire.

but they will behave as if they're Donald trump upon returning. This creates a false image that everyone in the Us, or even the majority of people have a lot of money. It's a lie. This is a very expensive place to live and most people are modest.

The Richest Nigerians are in Nigeria
As i said the place to look for wealth isn't in a new land. By the time you're done learning the customs and way things work here you'll be 50. You know Nigeria, you know the way it works, though few want to admit it you can make it in Nigeria. The richest nigerians in the world are from Nigeria, and don't bother themselves with the US. If you look at somebody like Dangote, Adenuga etc you will see they have one devious but consistent thing in common: connections to those in power. As a black person, and more importantly a Nigeria, you have to understand those in power are white and have no business bothering themselves with you. At least in Nigeria you can climb the social ladder more freely, you can't here. To become rich in America you need a great idea, something nobody has ever done before like an invention or a service and it has to make sense to the demand. If you have one of these....you'll make it in Nigeria as well.

you left out one important fact, the richest nigerians are criminals who are well connected to the bandits and rogues that run nigeria, how many rich nigerians made their money legitimately? yes you can make money in nigeria IF you have a connection and that is a big if - how many nigerians have these connections, if it were so easy to make money in nigeria why is over 70% of the population living in grim poverty?

Not Every Country is Rich, Be careful
Many people think any country with white faces is the US, and all European countries are good. BE CAREFUL this is a lie
Canada
US
UK
Australia
New Zealand

are the only country i would suggest for anyone. The rest are extremely dangerous and the people there have a hard time achieving anything due to poor economies and racism. Israel, Poland, Spain, Italy are all place that look nicer than Nigeria but suffer from the same unemployment and corruption. Many Nigerians feel they will get someone going to China not knowing that there are more unemployed Chinese than there are human beings in Nigeria. If you're not going to any of the countries on the list, don't waste your time. Many are going to places more corrupt and downtrodden than Nigeria like Russia where the poor remain poor for ever and the rich are rich forever. more importantly DO YOUR RESEARCH. I recently had a friend go to Yemen. Yemen is not only poorer than Nigeria but is one of the worlds more war torn nations. Many nigerians will go somewhere without knowing the name of the countries president. Not every oyibo country is 'ala beke'. Many might as well be in Africa. Be careful!

funny how you mentioned the poor remaining poor forever and the rich remaining rich forever in russia - isnt that exactly how nigeria is?

what you've said is true but this only highlights the fact that if we want our country to be a place worth living we have to make sacrifices ie get rid of those bandits who have reduced us to beggars in our own land.

Nigeria is a scary place, to be honest... However, everywhere has its upsides and downsides - and home is where the heart is...

It will be difficult for people who have lived outside Nigeria all their lives, or for a long time - with no family/friends in the country to move back there... Just as it'll be difficult for Nigerians with no family/friends abroad to survive in the new world...

Let's celebrate our Nigerian-ness, no matter where we call home...grin

I was not born with the burning desire to leave my country. My future plans are as Nigerian as I am. If I ever have to leave this country, I don't want to stay away for more than a decade. If you believe in leaving or staying away, I wish you good luck and God's blessings.

That's the truth - we just need to look for ways to harness our potentials both at home and abroad, and stop creating unnecessary divisions... People are going to continue moving back and forth regardless of how great or bad the two-sides(home and abroad) are, that's how humanoids have been since the beginning of time...

kabarancy: this gentle man who brought this topic of discussion about europe and america is very true.he is 100% correct.nigerians should stop dreaming of coming to europe to seek for greener pasture.the era of that is long gone.to be honest with, life is better off back home than here in europe and america.is extremely difficult for people even those with so called PAPERS to secure a menial job like cleaning for just 2 hours in a day.i really pitty africans that are risking their lives in the north african sahara desperately struggling to cross over to europe.what is here in europe and americai bet u nothing, nothing, nothing and nothing other than to come study and go back to africa.the level of suffering or difficulties has reached an alarming rate easpicially among black british and africans.people are really suffering in silence.u wont believe it untill you come.

Favourable factors that are needed for struggling is non present in naija. You bag a degree and roam lagos in search of a job that's non-existent.you source loan for business capital, trouble.you obviously don't know what youths go through daily.Over the last decade, we have produced nothing but an army of online fraudsters and love peddlers(ashawo),more nite clubs springing up daily.nothing is promising here abeg. Americans love fried chicken because it's tasty and perhaps, the only easy meal that's affordable (to them). Heck, I buy a bag of drumsticks for $6 - this lasts me for about two/three weeks, but I ALWAYS skin the back. lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Don't come here for the wrong reasons.

If you want a quality education for the sake of knowing more (not getting rich), a stable consistent life, 24 hour power, stable employment, good health care, good infrastructure, and a life of routine and order this is the best place in the world to be. If you want to be extraordinarily rich, a 'big man/woman', relaxed, to have fun in life, have children that will carry on your name and culture, or even important back home, stay home. You can want all of these things but you can't have them all. Many Nigerians believe they can come here and enjoy the benefits without suffering the pitfalls, this isn't true. Most Nigerians in the west are stressed, unhappy, lonely, feel as if they don't belong, struggling, and have children that most likely won't take care of them when they're old. Many are very rich as well and have done well for themselves but they would have done the same back home. Even with 24/7 power supply you'll come to find that you'd rather be eating egusi in the dark because a lot of the west isn't worth it if you come for the wrong reasons.

Like i said, many have made it and this is a great place to live and raise children. It's not a place to become 'rich' but it's a good place to have a reasonable life without too much unpredictability. If you can't make it in Nigeria, you can't make it here, that's plain and simple and by the time you learn what it takes to make it here, it'll be too late. and again, be careful where you go, only a hand full of countries are better than Nigeria, i mean it.

Is it not common sense? The people that stole public treasury in Nigeria and become billionaires, from Nigeria's past presidents, to the incumbent president, down to your local govt. councillor and co. Where do they send their kids to get good education? Where do they go for medical treatment ( HEADACHE & STOMACH ACHE) Obviously, they're telling you there's NOTHING TO DO IN NIGERIA, COMO'N people!!! How else do you want to be told that the FUTURE in Nigeria is BLEAK & BLEAK Your rulers leave you in darkness, LOOT YOUR COMMON WEALTH & BRING IT TO THE USA, to keep. What does that mean? (where person money dey,na there in heart dey ooo) USA, is the FUTURE ( they INVENT & THE ENVIRONMENT IS CONDUCIVE FOR IT), if you missed out, your kids might not, remember, here is the home of FORTUNE 500 companies ( they go to Asia, for cheap labor) e.g, Coca Cola, Exxon Mobil, Apple, Microsoft,Google, Facebook, Dell,GE, Lockheed Martin,Chevron,Pfizer,IBM, JP Morgan, etc. So, the PROOF of the PUDDING is in the EATING!!!!!!!!!

USA borrows from China to finance its budget.
That's why it will be hard for china to wage war on America.

But what does it mean to be rich? If Adenuga and the so called rich pay off their debts, I don't know how much they will be left with.

The simple fact is Nigerians are greedy and can go so low to make money, anywhere in the world. In Nigeria instead of the masses fighting corrupt leaders, they sell thier birthrights and wait for their turn to loot.Everybody can't be rich, but to live a fufilled life is more meaningful that being "rich" .
Remember the rich also cry.Not all that glitter is gold.

That is the loved one you know. I live in VA, and I can vouch for many folks who live in the McLean, Great Falls, Fairfax, areas. Folks that have homes worth more than $500,000. These are the folks who work in the govt, or who have their own business, or something else.

There's no template for success because you're Nigerian. Besides, how do you know what the person's purse is? He may live in an old house, but his retirement and 401k account will dwarf everything you have in this life. Please, stop using earthly stuff to judge people.
Retirement and 401K, THAT IS NOT GETTING RICH.
OP HAS SAID IT ALL. YOU WANT WEALTH YOU CAN MAKE IT AT HOME THROUGH HARDWORK. THERE IS ORDER AND FUNCTIONALITY OUT THERE.
AT LEAST HE HAS WARNED DOES GOING OVER THERE TO BE REALISTIC ABOUT IT.

Op sounds like he is bitter after retiring from working at mcdonalds.I retired after working as a police officer in NY and now live in lagos.I get my good retirement check monthly, no delays, no greasing palms, no settling accountants and for Xmas , I am getting almost triple my monthly check. How I love working systems.I am not rich but my future is Guaranteed till I die and when that happens, my childrend will get a fat check and monthly payment. This is as a result of hardwork and a government that truly rewards that. Here in Nigeria, pensions funds are being looted daily and the culprits are still walking free with their childre in the best colleges around the world.to make things worse, our govt is paying ransom to free the mother of a govt official.if that can happen , then our safety is SURELY not guaranteed as ordinary ppl.
