shagarri: We are all on a journey.

Within which we have different experiences.

Mine is different from yours.

There is only one constant.

You either work hard, cheat or be extremely lucky to be "successful" (which by the way means different things to different people)

So decide on what you plan for your life, forget what people are yapping about and give life a go.

Break free from your comfort zone and see the world and the different people's in it and the different cultures, tastes, music, styles, friends.

On your deathbed you won't care about your house or car or bank balance, but only have your experiences to comfort you and the happiness that you gave your kids an opportunity to have theirs.

We are all on a journey...to each his own .
Spot on.Let each man follow his spirit/conviction.Nigeria or elsewhere, it all depends on the personality and his predicament.Research, Plan well, work and pray.Life's good.

Freiburger: The OP just listed the English speaking countries and and stoped there. grin grin grin Why not say these countries are good for Nigerians what are no longer copable of learning new languages?

Nigerians worship the west because they were colonized by the English and the English made us praise and admire their specific anglo saxon traits. Nigerians make the mistake of thinking all countries have these traits, they don't. The countries i listed excel at rule of law and most importantly racial and religious tolerance and indifference. Though racism is there, the law will be on your side if you can prove yourself. They believe in a fair start for everyone and they're not so socialistic that it's impossible to gain wealth or escape poverty.

Nigerians value raw capitalism. They want a chance to start and finish where they feel their destiny deems. Scandanavia is great for example, but their culture dictates that people are given everything they need to survive but don't have a reason to built extraordinary wealth which is what nigerians like and want. You will have free health care, housing etc, but dont expect to become financially better off than you are now. These are the only countries better than the Anglo Saxon english speaking ones

the rest have cultural elements that unfavorable to the success of african immigrants. Racism, bad economic management, lack of rule of law, poor cultural assimilation, etc.
Even the vastly wealth Switzerland isn't a good choice, the immigrants there live in complete squalor and isolation.

When Nigerians go to places like Poland, Russia, Albania, China, Indonesia and find themselves thrown in prison for no reason with no trail and no means of escape or having to bribe their way through life they will realize there's not much of a difference between nigeria and these places.

stay in english speaking anglo saxon countries, they're open and it's easier to climb

the #1 thing to run from in Nigeria is uncertainty.

Nigeria is a society that can be scary because you're not expected to know what comes next. Every election feels like that last. When you encounter police you don't know if you're going to live or die. You don't know when you'll have electricity and when it will go away. You can't go to court cause you're not guaranteed fairness. It's impossible to know anything because everything is such a gamble.
It's hard to success when there's no foundation to stand on. Anything you buy can be a scam or a fake. You don' know who's telling the truth because lies are so normal. You're essentially trying to build a mansion on top of water, so i sympathize with Nigerians in that respect that was certainty.

That's the #1 reason i would say someone has to leave. Anyone leaving to become a billionaire or millionaire over night will end up with a kilo of cocaine pulled out of his anoos rotting in a chinese prison

Bros after all the plenty story, pack your bag and come back here permanently then I can listen to you. I'd rather live in singapore (as long as I can afford 3 square meals there) than stay in Nigeria.
Ever poured water on the back of a fowl before? That's what your epistle sounds like.

userlist: Who wrote this trash, you are comparing apple with orange.
Common now, the richest man in Nigeria is the poorest man in Canada
if you compare the way they live and their way of life.
A billionaire in Nigeria can't work freely in the community,
attend functions without all sorts of guard, can't move freely in the
society without harassment, you dress up nicely with things you worked hard out for
you are in trouble. Nothing happens if OBJ, Fashola or any of those big guys slap you in Nigeria.
You can't go out confidently with friends because you don't know what they are up to.
A country that still believe that human parts can make you rich.
It is better you live in Canada with little but with rest of mind.
What a very daft analysis, have you been to a place called banana island in Lagos and seen how the Dangotes, Adenuga's et al live? How many average Canadians can afford to live in Banana island or Maitama? You have a very low self esteem and most certainly would be scavenging for crumbs on the streets of Ottawa!

@OP, nice thread.

Read thru page 1 to current page, what a boatload of information.

IMHO, I think the rule of thumb is, go for whatever you want and think is BEST for you, there's no crime in looking out of the box, you don't just restrict and limit yourself to a place in the name of being patriotic, like others have mentioned, opportunities abounds everywhere, but one would definitely outweighs the others.

Considering the situation of things in our motherland, a lot of damages had been done and is still ongoing as we're discussing this, lot of destinies had been killed, and millions are yet to be destroyed, we can't just fold our hands without doing Nada, with the expectations that 'E go better". That's an old popular saying since donkey years now, yet Nigeria is still not there yet.

Truth be told, Nigeria is a faulty state and it would take God's divine intervention for things to change for the better, but until then, don't fold your hands.

If you have the chance and financial means to travel anywhere to pursue your dreamed education, career, jobs, better & stable life and bright future, go for it.

However,If you can't afford to; keep your heads up while searching the new opportunities, the untapped business & wealth creation opportunities that might crop up around you, leverage on it with a good dream, aspiration, unrelenting force/effort, hardworking, optimistic (I can do attitude), faith, prayer & God on your side your success is assured.

Finally, the end justifies the means.

See you all @ the top

GDreamz

P.s: Of course NIGERIA would be a better nation one day, but who knows when?

I pack my trunk, embrace my friends, embark on the sea, and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me is the Stern Fact, the Sad Self, unrelenting, identical, that I fled from. Ralph Waldo Emerson"
You can't run away from yourself. A lizard in Nigeria cannot wake up a crocodile in America. When you travel you carry with you, your laziness or diligence. You carry with you your prudence and unthriftness. Friend you can't run away from yourself. Stay where you are planted and grow and bloom. Emerson also said a man is foolish tochase a woman for if you do no women will chase you. You don't need to run after oyinbo they will run after you. Dangote as a lot of them working for him so also Adenuga etc.

You are the one who is exposing his daftness! Do u know how many billionaires you have in America? Do you know how many places like banana island or better that you have in America? People just Decide to type nonsense high on God knows what.

If Nigeria was "normal" it wouldn't be possible for dangote to be worth $13billion! Based on the GDP's of Nigeria and USA, he's equivalent in USA will be worth trillions! Don't you know that dangote and his like are the biggest crooks of them all? Colluding with government officials to corner swathes of Nigeria in a way that is not possible in any sane country!

With Nigerians it's always about getting rich fast and through the quickest route , the precise reason why the country is in an abject mess.

I would rather live in a country where I am middle class with relative peace than have all the riches in the world and be dodging bullets angry

On a more serious note, life is not about how rich you are , but how much happiness and peace you have in your life. These are priceless items.

If I can eat at least 2 basic meals a day , with 2 sets of clothes and a modest shelter, I am perfectly fine. Here today , tomorrow gone, what's all the fuss ?

Very true. Majority of educated Nigerians doing very well here in the States, would be Okada riders if they had choose Nigeria as a place to plan their future. It takes planning, government connection to succeed in Nigeria if its been long you have left . I love Nigeria but I don't see myself living there anytime soon.

A system where there no laws, where the very criminally minded and the very ruthless rule the roost.

Don't mind them! This thread is just a typical example of what the problem is in Nigeria. Nigerians can't make it abroad because the white man won't let them blah blah blah! Meanwhile Indians and Pakistanis will come from villages that are worse than places in Nigeria and make millions abroad.

Let me tell you the simple truth. A lot of Nigerians can't make it abroad because they are arrogant, very very indiscipline, fraudulent, deceitful and refuse to integrate!!

A Nigerian (living in a dingy council house) will spend thousands of pounds throwing party for "naming ceremony", "birthday party", "thanksgiving" etc, while his Indian counterpart will be saving that money for private school for his kids or to start a business. Even the white people that are comfortable will just take his kids and friends at an activity centre for a party instead of spending thousands. We are so childishly obsessed with showing off and being flashy with matured women walking around in “gelle” and gold doing “swaggalicious mummy”. A Nigerian will spend thousands on a big car, gold jewellery for parties etc., while still in debt.

Nigerians think they can bring their “any how” useless lifestyle abroad and when they don’t make it they blame it on someone else, i.e. the white man. How come Indians with very thick accents are so successful in the UK and America? I have a lot of Indian colleagues at work (and was close to one who was my neighbour) and I’ll tell you why. Hard graft and supreme self discipline. These guys are always scrimping and saving. They’ll go to the cheapest shops like BHS and primark to buy clothes; they don't care about fashion. If a Nigerian does that they call you “okoro”. If you see an Indian driving a Mercedes Benz, then it very likely that he can actually afford a Bentley.

A lot of Nigerians dey fall hand seriously in the UK where I live. Wrong priorities, no planning, frivolity, and fixation on what their mates are doing in Nigeria and they are neglecting their children due to their “anyhow” lifestyle. A record number of children of Nigerian parentage are being removed by social services and joining street gangs. You’ll spend thousands on cars, parties and jewellery, and just dump your kids in the local bog standard school to mix with riff raffs and expect what? Prisons in the UK are full of Nigerians of all backgrounds. Even professional people like accountants are ending up in jail (I personally know 4 people like that) due to fraud.

Let the truth be told, the Nigerian lifestyle stinks and that is the reason why so many cannot make it anywhere but in Nigeria where anything goes. In Nigeria, the more ingeniously corrupt & fraudulent you are, the better your chances are of making it! All those virtues of hard work, self discipline etc are seen as suffering. If Indian village boys can make it in the UK, then why can’t Nigerian city dwellers? Stop all these silly excuses, fix up and stop blaming the white man or the system. You cannot cannot continue to behave like you are still in Lagos and expect to make it.

Having said that, there are a lot of Nigerians who smartly adopt the positive aspects of their host countries and combine it with discipline, hard work and “Nigerian hustle” to make a very comfortable wealthy lifestyle for themselves.

Guy i go buy you Moet wink

There is no principality nor power that is going to drag me back to that shithole country called Nigeria. See how my former colleagues and classmates, some who have jobs and some who don't are bombarding my facebook mail and bbm with requests of 100 dollars for xmas. That is the same country you want me to return to? The company i was working for was paying me peanuts after all the years I spent in university: so that is where you want me to return to? When I relocated to Aba from Lagos Almost 3 years ago, na so mosquito almost kill me for inside that filthy city, come see as my body and face come rough. Right now after just 8 months of staying here in Yankee, come see as my skin don fresh sotay I don dey resemble Akata grin. So you are telling me Nigeria is better than US? I applied for a job here, when I went in for the interview with an American chinko, she told me that it was a temporary job but a day later, she called me back and told me that she fought for me so that they changed it to a permanent job. She gave me the necessary documents and that same day I got a job. A chinko that didn't know me from Adam fought for me and gave me a good job with one of the big healthcare companies here.

In short, OP, thunder faya you for ever opening this idiotic thread angry angry

Don't get it twisted - the chinco fought for you not because she likes you but because she knows that as an african you are willing to work harder for less - nigerians are yet to understand the dynamics of capitalism - its all about the money, a white man will employ you not because he thinks you're fantastic but because he can pay you less than he will have to pay an american citizen thereby increasing his profit margin - FACT!

This is why knowledge iS power - research the history of capitalism - the white man is rich today because of the sweat and blood of the black man - FACT!

You see, when you lose hope on some of these people is when they tell you people living on mortgage to finance home purchases is an issue. This is absolutely daft! For every finance person, you understand the importance of debt at certain times. You don't always have to finance growth from all you earn at a time.

What is wrong in having a robust mortgage system? This is the height of ignorance. Mortgage has given opportunities to many to own homes. It should also be the same in Nigeria. However our Federal Mortgage Bank is lying almost dead and you are happy with such. You should be ashamed that Nigeria cannot give many the opportunity to own their homes.

What the OP wants is to live like Dangote whils the health system remains in chaos. However, everyone should not and can never be Dangote, there must be a focus on things that create value for humanity in the system. Talk of your schools, roads, health, security, FOOD!(AFRICA CANNOT FEED ITSELF) these should be your focus instead of mast.urbating over those living a decent life in the US.

Even with money life is difficult in Nigeria hence quite a number of people even when just comfortable and not particularly rich abroad will like the predictability and reliability of their daily life abroad compared with the chaos in Nigeria.

There are a lot of opportunities in Nigeria as with any where else. A great barrier is the believe that you can only make it if you have a godfather a lot of my family have made it even without Godfathers or chose not to use their connection even those that hold UK and US passport cos they were born there. The major problem limiting a lot of Nigerians in Nigeria is laziness, inability to trust each other because there are a lot of scammers out there and because they are still allowed to continue to live in the family home and mummy and daddy are continuing to feed, house, cloth and give pocket money to them. There is no sense of urgency to get something doing(while this supportive part of our culture is to be encouraged we need to make ourselves aware that it might also mean as parents we become an enabler to our children not feeling the pressure as adults to start acting like one(paying your bills).

No matter where you are in the world, for the majority, a job or an opportunity will never come and meet you at home. You have to go out there and find it. If you ask a lot what they do to find work then you understand why they dont have a job and many wait around looking for aunty and uncle to "raise them (free money)" What do university students do during the holidays majority nothing we are all looking for jobs where we can sit down and do close to nothing and get paid for it. As students abroad, we will do anything we can find, some of us have cleaned other peoples home, we have done early momo, security, shops, cafe, restaurants, anything that fits around your student life. In Nigeria will we have done it, the answer is no.

Rome was not built in a day. We all have to start somewhere and at times the question is not are there no jobs or are there no jobs that you want to do even without any experience to talk of. The other is finding a job is a job in itself so are you working at it.

There is no one cap fits all for those living abroad. The rich man or woman is the one who has all (or a majority of) that he wants.

A WHITE MAN PAYING YOU LESS, BUT IN NAIJA YOU SEE WORK ANY PLACE
YOU ARGUMENT IS NOT RATIONAL. AT LEAST YOU GET YOUR WAGES EVEN WITH BENEFITS AND THEY DONT LOOK DOWN ON YOU

And this is true. Send me money, send me money, so many young people have nothing doing at the moment. Some of these young university girls that sleep with old men for money to buy BB, should be able to get at least a UNI part-time job to get them going. They will buy a BB with their salary on such jobs, FACT! But they have to lose their souls to buy a common BB and you call that a country. My German friend was the one who showed me the movie "blackberry babes", I felt ashamed of myself and my country.

Nigerians need to reflect on their situation and seek solutions but they rather obsess themselves with people suffering in Europe and US to make themselves feel good.

It is clearly a sign of inferiority complex.

We work and live to take care of ourselves and families and provide our children with opportunities in life.

We do not work and live to show off and flaunt our achievements in the face of others which is the typical Nigerian mindset and why other Africans despise us.
