passion007: Funny. However, here's a fun fact. The word 'yam' has its etymology from the Fulani word, 'nyame' meaning 'to eat'...but as there's no 'ny' sound in English, it became 'yam'. Another interesting example is 'okra' or 'okro' with its origin from the Igbo word 'okwuro' You too much!!! |

Em-my: You misunderstand OP. Current can indeed be low, so in that context its not strictly a grammatical error. But that dim light we observe as a result of power from PHCN is actually a result of low voltage, not low current. 1 Like |

justmenoni: this got me laughing out loud, but i dont agree over this one: I am hearing u. Instead of , i can hear u. 'I'm hearing you' is deemed incorrect in formal English. Such verbs of perception see, hear, understand, feel, are not usually used in continuous tenses. Thus I'm seeing you is wrong. It should be 'I can see you' 1 Like |

boborosky: These are some errors we make in our everyday english language. Post those u knw.Writing 'english language' instead of English language. 'd' instead of the. 'u' instead of you. 'ur' instead of your. 'i' instead of I. '2' instead of to. 'dan' instead of than. 'b' instead of be. 'knw' instead of know. @OP, note the above mistakes very well. I don't think those silly jargons are in any of the approved English dictionaries (American or English). And don't give me the usual excuse of the 'computer/Internet shorthand bullshiiit! It just doesn't cut it -- you need to 'teach' appropriately. The onus is on you not to set bad precedence when trying to showcase your erudition. However and, also, insofar as, each man has two elbows, whether you want to write 'more grease' or 'more power' I think it should be --to your elbows! Hey, @OP, don't take it as an attack on your person -- it's just a wake up call to those holier-than-thou types out there. 3 Likes |

"yesterday night" instead of "last night"..."loose" instead of "lose" and the one so often used by the "educated"..."who is going to bail the cat?" instead of "who is going to bell the cat?". Don't they know the story about the mice and the cat? English is the common language of Nigeria just as Mandarin is the common language of China and Urdu of India. It would be wise to learn it well. American English....forget that one..each region has their own lingo but when if comes to writing they will generally write correctly and not include mens and womens and childrens and peoples and jumpted and foots and I sees and he gifted and...let me shut up! |
Re: Common Grammatical Errors We Make In Our Everyday English by Wallie(m): 10:42pm On Jan 16, 2013 |
plendil: If I were representing the other guy, I will present the following argument: Current comes before voltage. Current is what flows through a wire (water in a river) and voltage is current measured over a distance of resistance (two points on the river). For completion, resistance is how difficult it is for current to flow. Since resistance is constant in this context, a change in current will result in a change in voltage. Voltage = Current X Resistance However, if I were representing you, I will support you with the following argument: Well, when a light bulb lights up or dims, it is a result of current flowing through the embedded filament. Since the brightness observed is a result of the filament which is pegged at both ends, you are directly observing the voltage across the filament and not the current. Further, in simplest terms, a filament is just a wire with resistance. And since a filament has length to it (not a single point), it mostly correlates with voltage as voltage cannot be measured at a single point. I'll work for the highest bidder! |

And I cringe when I hear folks say 'each other' instead of 'one another' when referring to more than two persons. Also, I feel like kicking some dullards' behind when I see: 'its' instead of it's. 'cant' instead of can't. 'dont' instead of don't . 'what of' instead of what about. |
Re: Common Grammatical Errors We Make In Our Everyday English by boborosky(m): 10:54pm On Jan 16, 2013 |
mulumele: You are right whether you say napkin or nappy.nappy means a piece of material wrapped around a baby's bottom and between its legs to absorb and retain urine and faeces. While, napkin means a square piece of cloth or paper used at a meal to wipe the fingers or lips and to protect garments. Is that clear! |
