questions regarding the death of love
letters
What is your view on the death of
love letters?
In fact, I was asking some Master’s
students in Public and International
Affairs some time ago whether
Christmas and other greetings cards
are still available. Some of them said
they were still in circulation but not as
popular as they used to be because
people now prefer to send text
messages and make phone calls. So,
the same has become of love letters.
Why do you think people now
prefer these new channels?
Well, these new forms of
communication are cheaper, less time-
consuming and faster.
Can you give us an idea of how
letter writing was during your
days?
During our days, we didn’t have the
influx of technology as it is today. Letter
writing was common. When you like a
girl, you would gather your friends, take
your dictionary and use big words to
write a letter. Some of the words
included “doxology.” The girl may not
even answer the letter because of the
words used.
Is there any psychological
approach to why love letters may
have lost their appeal these days?
From a psychological view, people may
no longer want to write letters because
they are verifiable evidence. This is
especially in a situation where the
writer does not really want to be
committed to the contents in the letter.
