Bro I am impressed. Each time I read your replies here I always feel like going to buy a phone again and actually chat you up on whatsapp but will certainly do that one day. I can't for now due to my inability to stay off nairaland whenever I have a phone and oscillating BP.

I have been into this business for 3 months and I must say people like you give me the confidence ( no, don't worry about the BP part it is caused by excess blogging and nairalanding if that word exists ).

I am stocking 4000 next and I have estimated 1.6m for feeding. Won't actually stock until I have blocked 40 bags of ranna, and 1 tonne of interstine. By two months I hope to have sold the current ones ( which I don't expect much from anyway ) and will update this thread asap.

But it is kudos to you. It is a shame that those who started this thread are no longer giving out informations like this unless you buy their e-books or attend courses but you have stayed true to type which I appreciate.

I have one reserve about your post quoted above though. I don't think 800 naira per kilo is attainable. In Ibadan where I am based, the price is currently 600 naira per kilo for what they call Ibadan size and 730 for Abuja size. I think it is better to work with that figure.

Thanks so much for the correction bro. Appreciated much...no man is an island of knowledge. I worked with 800 cos last time I checked in my area south east it was around that price cos people prefer the fishes quite big here 1.4kg+..but I humbly accept your correction I have not been in the area regularly for some time now. With the current price of feed, the market price of fish in Ibadan is ridiculous...tho i dont know what u meant by ibadan size. My point in the write up is to encourage the intending farmer to start right (good seed, good feed, good mgt) have a regular source of funds from which to pull as and when needed since he/she want to go in big- if all is well with them dem dey chop o! I remember working with a mentor and we had often times during certain stages of fish growth spent 3bags of vital feed per day in a pond with little less than 1000 fishes tho the fishes paid well too. AQUACULTURE IS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED. IT IS A RISKY BUSINESS. YOU MUST HAVE PASSION FOR IT TO SUCCEED IN IT. When you start your new batch or before you do....try to implement your plan to secure lower cost means of feeding the fishes...remember to monitor them closely to see how they're responding... +vely or otherwise. I hope you have plans to sell your fishes to the highest bidder..I mean you must not sell in Ibadan and try to avoid middle men as much as you can. The key is to stock your 4000 in stages so you don't end up at the same time with tons and tons of fishes itching to be sold while you don't wish to spend much on feeding any longer. A buyer might be tempted to price you nuts and kernels if he/she perceive you're pressed financially... and you definitely will be pressed after spending your 1.6mill on 4000 fishes ....not that your money is finished now but because you wouldn't want to spend more. I hope you do catch the joke.

As for those who sell manuals they got free from Google search..dere is God o. there names will soon appear on looters list.

As for those who organise seminars and charge people 2000 and so on as if aquaculture is like boiling yam....their cup go soon full....I pity those who attend such seminars.

You will never learn aquaculture by attending seminars in hotels. You learn from a seasoned farmer and by personal experience. I stand for what i do and i am willing to offer assistance as little as I can...and I am still very much a learner o pls. The more home grown fish we have the less imported fish we'll eat. (No offense if u sell imported fish, am only speaking from an entrepreneurial mindset.)

Good day Great farmers...
I have questions.
1)
is this formula still effective and how can i source for the ingredient.
Fish meal (Hanstholm, 72%): 25%
Soya Meal (or full fat soya): 30%
GNC (Groundnut cake): 20%
Dough/Maize/Biscuit (or other main forms of energy/carbohydrate): 20%
Molasses: 5%

2)
How many Juvenile do i stock per sq meter or sq ft?

Your formula is ok though your FM is kinda high ...but it depend too on the age of the fish.
Please where is your feed mill?

I got the formula here and this is my first time to trying mixing my own feed. I don't even. Know how to source for the ingredients yet neither do I have a mill not know any. I am a complete novice.

Time for me to thank you guys for the help rendered on this platform. I followed all that were said here & I reaped bountifully. This is my first time of handling rearing of fish alone and you guys put me rightly on the spot and shamed those that were waiting to mock me in my area. They thought they won't do well but God surprised them. When Bobrisky talked about Formulated feeds for them I went for Ace(after a guy advertised it here). Feeding them Magots too and for just 3 months and 2 weeks some of them weighed 1 per kg while some above 500g. Planning to stock more than the last one.

House please I need advice on feeding of catfish from fingerling or juvenile to melange stage. Target total weight is 500Kg for 1,500 fishes. due to limited funds.

please, I want to know:
1. How much would it cost to feed per fish from each stage?
2. what type of feed would be ideal to gain the weight in 2-3months?
3. How many bags of feed would be required?
4. Plus how long to feed them each feed sizes, i.e 2mm & 4mm till harvest.

Contributions would be highly appreciated as I am new to melange farming.

Also is it profitable?
