adaobi123: Erm.. Pounded yam is naija's best food - you're missing out... I kind of like eba because it's easy to cook and it's a bachelor's favourite after stealing soup from the fam.. Edi ka inkanga is a calabar variety of vegetable soup but it's nice... Mama Calabar in Norf Weezy sells the best edi ka ikanga, but there are few other naija restaurants that sell it as well... Expensive but worth the price... You need to learn fast... I'll add the "abacha" thing to my wish list... PS: soz for derailing the thread... I'm just living up to my King derailer tag... |

adaobi123: It's not hype, the guy was basically a genius - I need to put you some of his great tunes... He was also a revolutionary... Nas is a lyricist and arguably the most lyrical rapper ever... |

adaobi123: Morning, luv.. Lmao @ the bolded... You need to record a voice note and post it... I just hope you don't sound proper white, or cockney... Posh is sexy but overly white is neeky... Well, no one sounds proper white in London, anyway... Channel U and camera phone videos!! I miss dem days, truss... Re: David Cameron Standing In A Public Train (Pictures) - Humility? by Nobody: 6:39am On Apr 03, 2013 |
adaobi123: It all depends on your ideology - you need to tell me your state of mind and I'll "prescribe" the 2pac tune that would suit your temperament and state of mind... However, there are few general ones you should be able to relate to - like: - Brenda's got a baby. - Unconditional love. - Changes. - Keep ya head up. - Dear mama My block, hail mary, who do you believe in, and white man's world are kind of general - however, you need to be highly conscious to be able to discern the lyrics... Anyway, I'm off to get ready for work - will chat to you later... |

Channel U videos were just cringe. Grime just never sounded nice to me. It was crap. I didn't mind a bit of bashy or skepta though. Ludacris and Mariah Carey were my ish and still my ish till now. shymexx: |

Nigerian leaders pull this kind of stunt all the time. In 1987 the Golden Eaglets defeated Italy to get to the finals of the world cup (the match was played in the middle of the night). General Babangida came out of Dodan Barracks (with only two bodyguards) to shake hands with people who were celebrating the victory. He regularly drove around town without any guards at all. Colonel Marwa stopped at the roadside to buy akara, when there were rumours of killer beans. Ojo Maduekwe rode to Federal Executive Council meetings on a bicycle. Rochas Okorocha bought corn at the roadside and helped to push a broken down truck (before the tow truck arrived). General Idiagbon used to drive around town without any guards and personally arrest bribe taking policemen and people selling fuel illegally. I saw Colonel Oyinlola (who, I believe, is the worst governor in the history of Lagos) arrive a venue in a battered old car and without any escorts or even a driver. And there are many more instances. 1 Like |

I remember the visit to the Mr Biggs outlet. The staff wanted to put President Obasanjo at the head of the queue, but he declined and went to the back of the queue. The girl in front of him kept trying to look back (from the corners of her eyes). Obasanjo then sat down with some school girls and their mother. He ate and joked with them (in his usual manner). |

Watermelon: And it took me a while to realise that the cameramen are in on the act. There are these two SSS bodyguards (I'll call them gorilla number 1 and gorilla number 2). They were probably the best bodyguards in Nigeria (they protected the president during the Abacha, Abdulsalam and Obasanjo era). In 1999 when Bill Clinton visited Nigeria these guys stuck to Obasanjo like glue. However, if you watch american tv networks' coverage of the visit, you would not see these guys at all. The cameramen took very close shots that screened out the bodyguards. I can't remember what the event was, but there was a clip of Obama and Cameron disembarking from Air Force One and Boarding Marine One. It was a rainy day and they both carried umbrellas. Now, if you watch .... I think it was CNN's coverage, it looked like there were no bodyguards. I later watched an amateur photographer's coverage of the same scene (on youtube). There were bodyguards all around them and snipers on the rooftops. The bodyguards stood at a distance and the cameraman took close up shots with his zoom lens. Again, when Clinton addressed the National Assembly in Abuja, Senator Khairat Gwadabe did everything that she could do to shake Clinton's hand, but his Secret Service guards pushed her out of the way (they physically manhandled her). That didn't appear on the network's coverage of the event. |

1forall: The African leadership culture is completely different in that it pays a lot of attention to separating the leadership figures from those it's supposed to serve - high fences, bulllet proof vehicles, security personnel everywhere they go. As long as the poor are in majority don't even bother to expect this from any Nigerian politician. You are wrong. Have you ever seen a convoy of the US president? Or of even this David Cameron whose silly photo op has deceived you? The western leaders are no less removed from their people than African leaders. They just like to pretend they're not, while African leaders don't bother with the pretence. |

Rossikk: Largely true except at local government level in the UK as far as I know. |

Drdaps: Let us look at this and reflect on it, British Prime Minister, David Cameron standing inside the train while other passengers are sitting down enjoying the ride, can our leaders do this? If our leaders did that, people would say that the state of the seats on the train was the cause. They would castigate him and say that trains abroad are so clean you could eat rice off the floor and that the trains are so frequent and efficient there is room to seat down and not stand up. |

Rossikk: You are wrong. Have you ever seen a convoy of the US president? Or of even this David Cameron whose silly photo op has deceived you? The western leaders are no less removed from their people than African leaders. They just like to pretend they're not, while African leaders don't bother with the pretence. Did you see the quote below in a previous post? 1forall: I was referring to the difference in cultures between Western & African leadership, not specifically about the perks of office which are available to virtually every national leader which the Nigerian/African ones are wont to abuse. And now you've brought up the issue of pretense which is interesting If (according to you) pretense is the difference between Western & African leaders then pretense must be a good thing. Because if a leader is bothered enough to 'pretend' to be a public servant, it would indicate a level of accountability to those he leads, and also a concern about their opinion, at least more than the flagrant abuse of position which the African ones are well known for {e.g "I don't give a damn!"} would ever indicate. In other words, you don't do eye service for someone you don't give a hoot about. PS: 'You are wrong' is too conclusive to begin to make a point with, we're exchanging opinion here and not tussling for who's right or not. When you start an argument that way, you make it look like you've already concluded your view, and in that case there's no point coming onto a forum where you'll be faced with various differing ones. |
Re: David Cameron Standing In A Public Train (Pictures) - Humility? by Rossikk(m): 7:04pm On Apr 03, 2013 |
1forall: Pretence is NOT a good thing. Deceiving the people into thinking that you're 'one of them' is worse than making it clear to them the real situation of class differences. Cameron doesn't go to work using the tube or trains. He's chauffered there daily in the lastest Jaguar by a convoy of well armed security agents. That's the reality. So his posing as a standing passenger on a tube is highly deceptive and should not be encouraged. Interestingly he is doing this at a time he's being vilified in Britain for being 'out of touch' with the common people, as seen by his drastic cuts in welfare payments to the poor. Then he pulls this 'standing in the train' media stunt? It's a bit like Jonathan removing fuel subsidies today, and then in the midst of a public outcry, is photographed sitting behind an okada on the way to work. I don't want to have my intelligence insulted by such executive shenanigans. |
Re: David Cameron Standing In A Public Train (Pictures) - Humility? by 1forall: 7:33pm On Apr 03, 2013 |
You described it as pretense dude, not me. I don't see it as pretense but rather as the guy doing his job as a public servant. Heck he may not even like the fact that he has to do so every now and then, but it's part of the requirements of the job he signed up for. I'm not pro-David Cameroon (apologies to Salomon Kalou ) or pro-whatever-he-stands-for, I just don't agree with you that: Rossikk: The western leaders are no less removed from their people than African leaders. when there is a glaring difference in political and leadership cultures and a resulting difference in the level of accessibility to leaders open to ordinary citizens. Try writing a letter to a local representative in the NASS and see whether you get a response OR Can a public servant in the UK for example ever hold the opinion of his superior as his 'Oga at the top'? |
