Firstly, It is very sad the way some people are so eager to swear and curse and insult, even if the poster's question seemed a bit insensitive, is it too much to respectfully reproach and correct? I wonder atimes the age of some contributors on nairaland. @ playmode I also reside in SA and have been for over a decade but I will share my experience with you. From your post, I can infer that you have been absent from Nigeria for far too long, you have lost touch with reality, the longer you stay away from home, the more difficult it is to return, over the decade, I have not ever for a period of 1 yr never visited home atleast thrice, not really visit in the real sense of it but from the onset , I chose a line of business involving trade between the two countries, moving back to Nigeria is not just about packing and finding accommodation and going there to start a business, Nigeria is a country with unique dynamics, definitely easier to do business in, and a great place affordability, SA is like most of the western countries, I do travel very very much and host friends who come down on holiday and we get to sit and talk and I promise you, if you don't leave sentiments and start looking home, you will be so so so lost and behind. First thing you need to do is decide whether you really want to and ready to return home, because if you are all the things you listed are not enough to deter you. Secondly I am not advocating relocating your family suddenly, but your wife needs to make up her mind whether she wants a husband or infrastructures, I believe wherever the mans goes, the wife follows, it's called love and support, lastly from my experience, people build their world and comfort around them in Nigeria, start your business and then you can always buy your comfort, if Nigeria is now growing economically at such a phenomenal pace, what would you be looking for anywhere else, just to finish off, fuel for your car?affordable;food, I mean great food?affordable; cash? We are a cash economy, I.e no credits, no accounts, no lawyers or debt collectors chasing you with phone calls and credit bureaus and blacklisting etc; lastly the most loving and amazing people, my wife comes to Nigeria with or without me and when I hear her talk of Nigerians and calls them 'my people' , it atimes takes me a while to even remember that she isn't Nigerian and she lets me in on what's happening in the social circle in Nigeria including the latest musics LOL, your wife needs to open up and decide!

OK. If I were in your shoes, I am not moving an inch. Relocate to where?

The Nigeria headache is too much. The people that live in Nigeria know how to
live there; people in UK, know how to live there; people in USA, Canada or Australia likewise
know how to live there. Grass always looks greener from the other side.

Unless, life in SA is unbearable, I see no other reason(s) whatsoever to relocate back home with your family.
Kidnapping should be the least of your worries. There are innumerable other bul_shits that will make your
life a living hell in Nigeria

The dirty environment alone is a starter

You probably say that because you are not unfortunate to be caught up orile, ajegunle and ikotu breed like most nigeria are.Plceshere suppose hard working sane people literally live in hell on earth, made so by years of misrule by unconstructive and inhumane laeders.

Umm are you telling me people who stay in adjegunle and the rest stand a greater chance of getting kidnapped? Please!!

Those places you mentioned are ghettos and no one expects ghettos to look like banana island or manhattan. People who live in ghettos are mostly made up of the working class and unemployed and if the environment is dirty and unfriendly, its solely the fault of its inhabitants.

Finally all fingers are not equal, In Soc 101 the functionalist perspective agrees that there has to be social class hierarchy for social balance. There's always going to be Rich, average and poor people.... It's inevitable.
Some quotes for you "its not your fault if you're born poor, but its most definitely your fault if you die poor" -Bill Gates , "there's are endless opportunities in every part of the world, it just takes a smart eye to see them"-Aliko Dangote.
Bye now.

esanland: Souti and Naija which one is more secure? I have lived in South Africa, that was the only country I have ever live that ole boys put gun in my head, i was so traumatized that it took me months and the special grace of God before I recover from my trauma. I escape death twice, for the years I lived in Naija I never had that experience.

So what are you talking about? whats so special about South Africa where black people live in the shadow of whites? Even the United States is not as secure as Naija. visit South Side of Chicago, visit Detroit, come to East New York of Brooklyn New York etc you go tired brother. Africans/Naija in the disapora should please stop projecting Europe, America, overseas as if is heaven on earth.

The earlier you go home, put your foot somewhere the better. I live outside Naija but I am going back home soon. whether light dey, no road, I dey go home, is a matter of time, things will be settle in Naija. And Nigeria will become the industrial base of Africa in the very near future.

if you want to move to Naija, do it gradually, don't rush your family at home once, you go in there set up business once you are settle you can move your family in. Everything is about planning.

Thanks my brother. I used to live in the US. That remains the only country where I've had a gun pointed at me, and TWICE for that matter. In the USA you'll see small boys walking around, armed with guns. Once, a group of guys burst into my apartment looking for what their father did not put there. Thank goodness I had left the place just 5 minutes earlier. It's by the special grace of God that one is here today typing this stuff.

Compared to these places, Nigeria is very safe... You would be very very unlucky to encounter such nonsense in Naija.

playmode: I have lived in South Africa for close to 13 years but have been planning to return to Nigeria with my family for the past two years. Over the past two years i have sent money home to arrange a place for me and my family to reside in and have done a lot of research to determine what I will do when I get to Nigeria.

All my plans however have been put in disarray with the worsening Political, Infrastructural and Security problems in Nigeria. I just learnt yesterday that there has been close to 10 kidnappings in the lekki axis where i own a property and this just worries me.

Living abroad all these years has definitely "spoilt" me. Now i am used to constant electricity & water, good roads ,clean open market, parks , cheap ADSL internet, advanced security , strong currency , efficient service providers ,quick access to modern technology , world class medical facilities e.t.c All these things makes my life easy and enables me to earn a decent living. My wife is South African just as my kids are and they are also spoiled by the easy life in South Africa.

The recent state of kidnappings in Nigeria has scared my wife who was once eager to move to Nigeria to become reluctant to move. As everyday passes I see the hope of moving to Nigeria with my family fading away. My In laws have even made it clear to me that they do not want their daughter moving permanently to Nigeria because of the kidnapping situation. I have tried defending Nigeria in their presence but everyday news of bombing or kidnapping emanates from Nigeria.

My question to all Nairalanders especially the ones in Nigeria is this :

(A) If you were in my shoes what will you do?

(B) Is it worth it to come back to Nigeria at this time or should I wait a few more years till the security situation get better?

(C) Should I leave my family in South Africa, come back to Nigeria and visit SA once every two months?

Please only serious minded people need reply and please none of that “I am the first to comment” nonsense. This is a thread directed at mature adults with some level of intelligence. Thank you.

Ol'boy, there's no freaking easy live in south Africa. There's no easy life anywhere. South African crime rate is worse than that of Nigeria, and I'm very sure of that. So, if you really wanna back to Nigeria, you better do so, and stop deceiving people. Except for the steady supply of electricity and other amenities, life in south Africa ain't great. Be it US, Europe and the rest, there ain't no easy life any where.

But I hear she is getting better. I won't say much Playmode but will tell you this:

When next you visit Nigeria, spend extra 3 hours at the Airport and count how many Expatriates entering Nigeria. These expatriates do not live in ASO Rock, they live in Nigerian Town and Cities.

Again, if you have a day extra, catch a 55minutes flight to Port Harcourt and also count how many expatriates you find in the Airport.

Then decide!

Cheers

I stayed in US over 18yrs and I have home in Nigeria and brought my children home to stay here and study before going back to the US.Nothing wrong coming home and no where in the world you cannot get violence. People die every mins in America.
You can first come home and arrange things back home in Nigeria and later work on getting them back to Nigeria.
Home is home and you can enjoy life in Nigeria if you do away with nocturnal life style and know the kind of friends you keep. Stay away from troubles. You will get all the food things you mentioned here in Nigeria.

My guy, some years ago I made up mu mind the hit the exodus flight out of this country but as I was rushing to the airport, the Chinese, Indians, Lebanese, Koreans were rushing in from the airport with a smile. Meanwhile, the resident Americans and Europeans were sitting pretty, and refusing to return to their beautiful countries even when their services were no longer needed. A particular British man cried the day immigration people caught up with him in Lagos and told him his papers are expired and he's got to be repartriated. Then I looked back and returned home to discover what it was I have missed all these while and I never regretted my decision to stay back. Kidnappers, armed robbers no fit pursue me from wetin I don taste.

Any of these ring a bell? Marikana mine riots - 32 dead, Worse crime rate in the world, home of Soweto all stars, Rape more common than pure water sachet, ubiquitous male-nyash observers (homo thingz), Wetinnnnnnn no be South Africa again?
Truth SA is years ahead of Nigeria with great infrastructure and much different challenges but please please please dont regale us with tales of superb everything cos we know that just like our dear Naija, not everything is superb. Dont use your 504 to remind me my Fathers beetle is crap - no be person dey ride Ferarri? Bros abeg park well jare.

I was going to ignore this comment but i feel that some facts need to be put straight so that gossip t=does not become facts.

I am not sure if you are capable of grasping simple English language because you seem to be insinuating that i mentioned that i live in luxury. Please for the record i stated that i have access to basic amenities and these basic amenities make my life easier. At no point did i say i was living like a billionaire. If basic amenities which is enjoyed by even the poorest South Africans resemble luxury or Kensington Palace Gardens in London to you then you must be living a very miserable existence. Electricity ,Good roads and good medical facilities are basic human rights in civilized countries.Needless to say your post reeks of jealousy and has no bearing on my request whatsoever.

Now let me address the things said about SA;

(A)Marikana mine riots - 32 dead

First of they were protest not riots.Yes 32 miners protesting for better wages were shot dead when they ran towards the armed police force with their weapons in their hands? Please tell me how that is a crime?

If you were a police officer and a protester ran towards you with a machete in his hands what will you do?

(A) Wave at him and say hello

(b) Shoot him to defend yourself

What the miners did was stupid ,they were fooled by a babalawo who gave a juju to rob their bodies. He told that the juju will make them invisible to bullet. Now ask yourself which sane individual believe such nonsense?

Secondly Marikana is a rural mining area which is far from where the middle class live in South Africa. That was one mining protest that went wrong. One out of thousands of protest that take place every year. This has no bearing on SA's crime stats.

(B)Worse crime rate in the world

This is highly debatable because the formula being used to calculate these stats are flawed and sometimes biased towards the west. Some African countries like DRC and some South African American countries are way more violent than SA.The USA is also a very violent country with more guns owned per person that any where else in world. You should watch a program call 48 hours.Furthermore in South Africa ,you can go to the police's website and download crime stats for the all the local government in the country. Is that possible with the Nigerian police? At least in SA you know which areas to avoid living in.One last thing crime is more common in the township areas (ghettos) that anywhere else in the country. Most middle class residential area are well secured with armed private guards. These are the kind of areas where Nigerians live in in SA hence why we do not experience much crime.98% of the Nigerians who experiences crime in SA are usually criminals themselves or are usually set up by other Nigerian when a deal goes bad.I have lived in SA for 13 years and have only been robbed once (11 years ago) because of my own carelessness at the time.

(C)home of Soweto all stars

I honestly do not know what this mean so please elaborate.

(D)Rape more common than pure water sachet

...And rape is non existent in Nigeria,DRC or other African countries?

(E)ubiquitous male-nyash observers (homo thingz)

How does it affect my life? I am not gay and do not have gay friends so they do not bother me.Do we not have Charley boy and Denrele in Nigeria who are openly gay celebrities? what about the numerous Nigerian gays living in Nigeria? Please try again this point is weak.

(F)wetinnnnnnn no be South Africa again?

Yes it is Sa again ,do you have insecurities ? what is your beef with SA? I am proudly Nigerian but i hate it when Africans start hating other Africans. It is called Nigger mentality. What i find silly is that guys like you want to turn this thread into another Nigeria vs SA battleground. Please go fight your anti SA battles somewhere else. This thread is about giving a brother sound and progressive advice.

Next please!

Is poverty and insecurity peculiar to Nigeria alone? Whether you believe it or not, we are making very tremendous progress, the analog Nigeria of the 90's has virtually disappeared. Crime rate is stil higher in South Africa, America than Nigeria. What crimes do we even commit here, the biggest security problem now is boko haram insurgency but I believe gradually we would overcome this(since it is more political than economic or religious). Let me tell you why it seems that few Nigerians abroad are making it(atleast can pay their bills); when they get abroad they get more determined than when they were home. They do ood and menial jobs they would never dare do here, one told his cousin (my friend) how he spent 3 years abroad bathing and taking care of a white lady's monkey for few euros per week. Ask same person to start poultry business here or fishing farming or satchet water processing, he will tell you he is a graduate !!! Abroad the music changes, no free money or free food unlike home and then they begin to think responsibly and determination fires them to achieve results. So it is not because they stay abroad, but because the man in them has changed.

Take Rossik's advise with the smallest pinch of salt: he is a GEJ apologist and propagandist! Look over his previous posts and read in between the lines. I was in Naija recently for about 6 weeks and I would surely not be moving there in Nigeria's current situation. People like Rossike and his fellow lapdogs have no clue what it is to live, not visit, modern and forward looking cities in the West. My advice is wait a couple of years before moving and visit for a few weeks or months at a time if possible. Nigeria will not be better under the current retardeen president, so weigh your options carefully before making such a major move.
