A city like Lagos cannot be bulldozed. It's an already made city. We just have to add some cosmetics from time to time but i doubt it can ever be like we dream for it to be. It's left for upcoming cities to learn from the shortcoming of Lagos and plan very well putting into cnsideration every possible variable.

Nigerians for some reason do not have a culture of beautifying areas. Planting flowers, trees, bushes, and etc. And please don't mention the tacky crap Fashola does because that's terrible landscaping lipsrsealed

It takes very little to make a place come alive. Abuja looks dull not because of buildings its because of its arrangement.

Anyway, what's stopping Nigeria from building other cities?

A place like Calabar can be turned into a city as well...

...the big difference between these other African cities and Nigerian cities is population density. This is very important because when you look at pictures of Lagos in 50s and 60s and compare with now....Lagos was more beautiful then than it is now even though the structures are more than back then. Population density kills the elegance of beautiful landscapes.

Nigeria should be compared with high density countries like Ghana, Kenya and so on. not with Zimbabwe and Congo.

Congo DR is far more populated than both Ghana and Kenya combined...

It's only if Calabar becomes the new capital that it will be touched by the government. Calabar is a serene town but it's a dead zone. Nothing happens there commercially. I think every city should be allowed to develop at their own pace. Every city needs a mayor like it is in the US and this cities should be given some form of independence.

Nigeria has the population to turn Calabar from a dead zone to something like Miami... They just need to move the headquarters of certain companies there, and develop the city...

The biggest undoing of Abuja is lack of proper administrative manager like a mayor of Governor. The minister of Abuja is an unecessary appendage to pdp who does d presidencies bidding. Abuja needs a mayor.

That will deprive other cities of development. The truth is that we need to stop building cities instead we should let cities build themselves by adding the needed insentives.

Cities don't build themselves - the government does... Once the government steps in, investments would follow...

We need at least 5 cities in that country but right now, we've only one(or probably half) city...

Symphony007: keep vomiting rubbish!! How many african cities "built" their capital? Abuja is a "built" capital. Built from a barren land and today it's a city still growing. You mention cities like nairobi which are attestations of colonialist. Is it not in kenya where queen elizabeth was vacationing when her father died and she became queen? When she return years lateer she remarked to her husband phillip, "nothing has changed, they're really good at maintaining the old". Rubbish!

Shut up before I slap am shut. Lagos was built by the colonialist and yet it still cannot measure up to most cities in Africa so wetin u dey yarn? Abeg move left and give credit to others.

The goveernment should only create the road map but not build cities again. Abuja should never be allowed to repeat itself again.

We can even have up tp 10 world-class cities if we decentralize government.

they just finished sand filling about a one square kilometer early this year. The monsoon will wash their folly away.

That one is guarrantteed.

Even if they built it over night, it is a relatively small space and is no longer than 2km and about 300m wide.

So much noise over nothing

They just finished filling 5 million square meters earlier this year...

Even if we decentralise the government, you'll still need the regional government to take the initiative... Government presence first, and private investments would follow suit...

In England, for a place to become a city, it has to have a diocesan cathedral(Royal/government presence), and full city status would be granted by the British monarch...

PS: the Queen is the head of the government in England - the british PM is under the British monarch.

I will prefer Calabar to remain as it is.

Prestine and untouched. Most preferred tourist destinations are those places untouched by so-called civilization.

There is this story about a rich business man who on advice from his doctor went on a long and well deserved holiday in a remote and isolated island. The only business on the island was fishing and the small cabins that were rented. One day as he stood on his beach front thinking that he would never return to the hectic city life he noticed a fisher man coming back from the sea. He went over to him to make small talk. He inquired about his haul and the fisherman replied that it could have been better. Being a man who liked to solve business issues the business man lectured the fisherman that he could switched to lobster instead and that there were big restaurants in New York who will pay big money for a fresh catch. The Business man then spent over 3hrs working out a strategy from getting bigger boats, capital and even a brand name with a possibility of a franchise chain of Lobster Restaurants in New York that the fisherman could own within 5yrs. The Fisherman then looked sadly at the business man and said; "but that means I would have to leave the island and go over to New York with you". The business man then told the fisherman that he could always return for a visit once or twice in a year.

If we "develop" everywhere where will we go for holidays?

Please cities are not synonymous with beauty. I prefer nature.

New York is ugly....but the city has institutions and character and mood. Same with Chicago!

Orderliness and Cleanliness are components of beauty. Chaos resulting from population density and disorderliness is what is killing our cities in Nigeria.

It should not take a skyscraper structure to beautify the landscape. We need institutions....we need to transfer the ideals of philosophical living onto the landscape. Nigerians lack that.
