My honorable One Piece fans, There is a special service announcement i will like you to take note of, and that is the aspect of SPOILER ALERT!!! There are some of us that have vowed not to read the OP manga due to factors best known to us ( as in we like to keep our imaginations alive till the anime is aired). Please, will you be willing to indicate a Spoiler Alert at any Manga sightings on this thread, since the manga is like 6 to 8 months into the future story of OP? Arigato!!! |

Culled from Mangastream Lost in Translation: Humanity and Divinity Hello there everyone, voxanimus again. You were all so kind in your comments on my last blog post that I thought I'd do another one. Well, that and this week's One Piece chapter has yet again a lot of stuff I want to talk about. I think. Anyway, let's get the more lighthearted stuff out of the way. Several characters' full names were revealed this week, and I wanted to give some background on the references contained therein. Corazon's real name is Rocinante, or the name of Don Quixote's horse in the eponymous book. Law's name contains two references to the Napoleonic Wars: the Battle of Trafalgar is a naval engagement in which British forces led by Horatio Lord Nelson sunk 22 French ships without losing a single of their own. "Water Law" is a transliteration of the Japanese pronunciation of "Waterloo," the name of the battle in which Napoleon was defeated once and for all. Japanese has a habit of using the native pronunciation of a word when adopting it into Japanese; the Belgian pronunciation of Waterloo is closer to "Water Law." This means that transcriptions of the name as "Watel" and the like are clearly wrong. On the heels of this fact, I would like to make a request to all of you readers. Please refrain from commenting other scanlation groups' translations—be it of names, attacks, or dialogue— in the Mangastream comments section. I find it disrespectful to not only my work but that of our other translators. We spend no small amount of time and effort trying to come up with the most faithful and appropriate renderings we can of these manga, and to ignore that work is not very nice, to say the least. Now, let's talk a little about the main underlying reference of this week's chapter. Again, though, to understand it, we need a bit of historical background. Following Japan's defeat in World War II, the Allied Forces insisted, as part of the war reparations, that Japan move away from its imperial government and towards a more democratic one. Pursuant to this goal, Emperor Hirohito was required to issue a statement officially renouncing his status as living god, which would thereby decrease his monarchical right to sovereignty and pave the way for the writing of a new Japanese Constitution that would formally enshrine democratic power as the de facto arbiter of Japanese politics. The Emperor and the Japanese royal family would remain as mere symbols of the Japanese government, with little real power. The name of this declaration was 人 間宣言 (にんげんせんげん, ningen sengen), which means "declaration of humanity." Sound familiar? It is certainly very evident that Doflamingo's father's descent from the Holy Land and attendant renunciation of holy status is at least superficially similar to that performed by Emperor Hirohito following World War II. But the similarities do not run as deep as they did last week. Doffy's father's reverse apotheosis, if you will, caused his family to fall into ruin, as they were preyed upon by those they used to rule. Yet, on the other hand, Hirohito's renunciation of divinity was, at least in the long run, a very good thing for Japan. It allowed for the appointment of a Japanese Prime Minister and governance power to rest almost wholly in the hands of the three branches of the Japanese government. In truth, though, Japan was actually occupied by Allied forces (in effect, the United States) and the majority of the governmental and economic reforms implemented following the war were done so at the behest or even command of the occupying forces. While it is probably not disputable that the long-term consequences of Allied occupation of Japan were beneficial, the attitude of the average Japanese citizen towards the occupation itself is less clear-cut. Some believed that the somewhat ham-fisted occupation's use of power hearkened back to the pre-Meiji days of the shogunate. Ultimately, I cannot say whether or not Oda is trying to critique, using Doflamingo's family as a foil, the treatment of Japan at the hands of America following the Japanese emperor's renunciation of holiness. I was neither alive during the occupation period nor have I been to Japan and had a chance to talk with Japanese people about this. In addition, attitudes toward these sort of political issues vary from generation to generation, and I know not which generation's reaction Oda is calling upon. What do you think? Leave your opinion, or any suggestions or feedback, in the comments below. Stay frosty, friends. - voxanimus 2 Likes |

Oi, who here thinks Zorro is now overpowered. I mean homie is making short work of Peeka and I have a good feeling that he would be a much tougher opponent for Doffy. Not saying he is stronger than Luffy but his swords gives him a bigger advantage over Luffy's fists. Also I have to ask who can join the crew as a new member now...Rebecca seems out of it cos she wants to live with her father, Violet is a maybe but I don't know why she would join, she doesn't have the thirst for the seas like each member of the ship. Cavendish and Law are already captain material and can't work under anyone. Surely Kyros and Riku are too rooted in the kingdom... So that leaves Bellamy for me. Think about it, Bellamy has no crew, is not as powerful as Sanji, has a mission (to see and survive the coming tidal wave) and has the vision that each SH possesses in purpose. He also demonstrated mettle by not having the guts to carry out the kill order given by Dillinger on Luffy. So Bellamy is the new crewmember, nevermind that he has no trade. |

FullMetal Alchemist I should have created a thread for this way back last year, but in as much as it has be completed and no longer ongoing, i thought i should as my honorable, soundminded OP fans their take on this Anime. As for me, the anime mind blowing and off the hook, it opened my eyez to lots issues that require discussion. For those that have not seen Fullmetal Alchemist(brotherhood), i can recommend that it will not be a waste of your time, money and data(Mb). |

SageNaruto: I have not seen the 1st part, I have only seen FMA Brotherhood, its concise and straight to the point. I am a very picky Anime fan, if u dont mind giving a brief of the 1st one, buh imma subscribe to it later... Thing is, what lessons can be drawn from Brotherhood? |
Re: One Piece (anime/manga) by SageNaruto(m): 6:48am On Oct 21, 2014 |
TopsyKrete:I also haven't seen d 1st part... Just searched based on ur recommendation and found there was an early 1 b4 brotherhood, so I just wanted to knw if I had to watch dat 1 1st to understand d back story... But I've already started BH and it doesn't even look lyk I missed a whole season, well except 4 d war they kip referencing... Thus far it luks gud and enjoyable, so tanx!!!! |
Re: One Piece (anime/manga) by TopsyKrete: 9:13am On Oct 21, 2014 |
SageNaruto: Try to understand the concept of equivalent exchange as portrayed in the series and compare it to ppl in the real world searching for money and power, through rituals and other diabolical means... Look out for the Truth, the Seven deadly sins of man as portrayed as the children of Father, and the Father itself(Homunculus) as the unseen power behind all political authority. If you are seeing it for the 1st time, just keep an open mind... |
Re: One Piece (anime/manga) by Frankloon(m): 4:02pm On Oct 21, 2014 |
Brotherhood has the best anime ending I've ever seen. It was full of suspense, especially when the Brothers separated and all were planning for the day of reckoning. |
Re: One Piece (anime/manga) by decepticos(m): 7:41pm On Oct 21, 2014 |
TopsyKrete:lessons from FMA BH; absolute power kurrupts, and as in all animes friends are important. Now dats the lessons here is the intrigue, the politics; rivalled only (for me) by SnK, Claymore and Beserk in basic politics and conspiracy the story behind Pride and his Father (general Bradley) and their father the 1st Homonculus, and the other generals of amesteris, is wow I mean the anime is rich. About the first one there is no significant connection to brotherhood I.e its not like a season 1 season 2 thing, I could as well say they are two different animes, major similarity is the elric brother's father, the homonculus', the law of equivalent exchange and yes FMA (the 1st 1) had details of the state alchemist exams. |

Frankloon: True true Even though the focus of the use of Philosopher stone was more on power enhancement, coming to the real world, i cant help but wonder those that use human lives for money and some to obtain power, what consequence do you think awaits them? |

Omo that Corazon's power, the noiseless fruit, is bloody epic!!! I mean I tot at first that it would be the lamest power yet but damn that shyte is soo sweet. As a sneak attack ability, it is virtually unmatched. Zabuza ain't got nothing on it! So how is Corazon going to die, I know Doffy will kill him but...my money is on Vergo showing up again before he dies though |
Re: One Piece (anime/manga) by kraftykc(m): 10:26am On Oct 25, 2014 |
Frankloon: Meh, it was just okay. Nothing special. I hated the preferential treatment accorded Elric. I mean he gives a gagging speech to Mustang on why he shouldn't kill Envy yet he goes and tears Homunculus in a bottle into shreds and everyone claps. The anime was too childish, full of teenage angst and shyt like that. I respect Berserk and Black Lagoon cos they didn't try to use all mighty emotions to turn people. FYI Hunter X Hunter, makes FMA look pathetic |
Re: One Piece (anime/manga) by decepticos(m): 9:19pm On Oct 26, 2014 |
kraftykc:why I do not agree with you that FMA brotherhood is too childish is because, people died like mad, and that one law of equivalent exchange was upheld, the only special treatment the main characters (who were children) got was they were able to do alchemy without alchemic circles and not because their father was from some legendary tribe and created the 1st homonculus, and they like guts in beserk and the main guy in gantz where targeted by their "employees". For me FMA showed that an adventure anime could have a tenth the high level political trash that was posed forward in Desu nosu. |

kraftykc:was going to call his powerr irrelevant till d last chapter, a lamp breaks without a sound a building explodes without a sound, he is the perfect thief/assassin. Its for this reason I feel Oda should either do a rerun of naruto or take over from Kishimoto, its rear to make silence a cool thing. Reminds me of Mario Puzo's Omerta. |
