all na thieves? most successful and young nigeria are bankers. how many are lawyers, engineers, health workers are among them?

You guys are missing the whole idea of that word "success"

Success is success when you achieve a set goal.
Firstly, let me tell y'all that a man without a set goal cannot be succesful. There must be something you aim at..something you hope to achieve within a set period of time and the WORD success only comes in when such goal(s) is/are achieved..

Do you know it will take a GTB Banker receiving N200,000/month 416 years to make the same amount (1Billion) a Zamfara born Building Technologist (Alhaji Aliyu
Abubakar) spent to get a plot of land in Abuja?
www.nairaland.com/1262669/building-belongs-chairman-aa-oil

Pls lets not get this thing twisted... ONLY you can define your success rate.

Is Wizkid not succesful in his own way?

Is Pastor Adeboye not succesful in his own way?

Pls, lets not narrow success to "banking career" as I see a lot of people here eyeing that sector already JUST because someone feels it pays to be a banker.

Show me 10 Bankers, & I'll show you 8 frustrated men.

Like someone rightly said, most career path in this country lies on who you know, your dad, your family..

Tell me why, Access Bank will not make me a Manager when my daddy has a huge deposit of N50Billion?

cheesy

Majority of the names on the thread sounds strange except to those who studied Banking..

This debate won't end until someone agree success only come from ones set goal(s).

No goal, no success.
Your goal may be fame, money, position, career peak, innovation, philantropy, etc..
Whatever it is you set for yourself only becomes a success when it is achieved irrespective of lapses & delay. smiley

WinkWrld: Nigerian career includes music. What is success? Success is impacting the future generation with your actions and fame of today. And when such action and fame translates to good wealth for you and your family making you live amongst the rich and wealthy in society. Examples of successful kids whizkid, olamide, dbanj, Davido , 2face, don jazzy. Etc I am sure these kids are successful and did not school in havard
.when the ED's MD's etc need entertainment they pay heavily and when these rich kids Ned to invest their monies they pay heavily to these MD's too.
So the whole idea of success should be redefined not to focus on 9-5 jobs only grin grin grin

Word. A career in banking is very very very tough. Not for the faint-hearted. Been there, done that both home and abroad. I had a friend in my masters class in the UK. Dude was not up to 30 when he became the SE regional manager of one of the biggest pension firms in Nigeria. His dad, a top boss at Nigerian immigration service helped my mate and his employer(the pension firm) secure a mega deal. He was promoted straight up.

the problem in Nigeria is because everybody thing of after school they will work in the oil company or in the bank, nobody think of how to be their own boss and create a job opportunity to others, even our leader don't know the important of investment, so my advice to everbody is that they should stop wasting money for unnecessary items and thing of what to start with little money and grow big because the jouney of 1000 miles started from a step taking forward.

Try new thinks new ideas leave the conventional method, and most of all be ready 2 take risks if you must succeed....e.g lemme relate an xperience a stupid friend of mind brought an idea of us starting fast/quality laundry apartment "i was like u no de c road ø" he took the idea n sold some of his inherited propertises opened the apartment. Do u beleive u can walk in there on monday morning b4 work remove ur clothes n stand in male section @the counter listen 2 newz in 5min your clothes is ready 4 you...and he has it all over the place now(shops) thats innovation & risk there work 2geda if u must make it.....i comm3nt ma reserve #winks#hehe

Cultured: Well , from my own perspective and experience , the secret of becoming successful at young age/ at any age are as follows :

- Master an art through either formal or informal education and always remain innovative
- Imbibe self and continuous education - Leaders are readers ( although, not all readers are leaders )
- Live on your own opinion , because living on others opinion is the easiest route to failure and death
- Surround yourself with people who're more passionate and informed than you are in your chosen field ( chose your team wisely )
- Work hard , but never forget " Smart Work ", because it pays better
- Expansion is good but remember that it doesn't equal profit- profit is what will keep you going
- Positive mindset is also very important , because misinformation and misconception are very bad diseases

Lest I forget ,have it at the back of your mind that theory is different from practical and that experience remains the best teacher ( our prayer always is, may we never be consumed in the cause of experimenting ) . And "quitters never win " they say , but never forget/undermine " Surrender Tactics" , because at some point in the cause of your journey to success you will need it and when applied rightfully will lead you to the desired promise land . Good luck to all who aspires to become successful in life .

Bye the way , you don't necessarily need to attend any IVY league school neither at home nor abroad to become successful - having the privilege to attend one will only help to gloss that greatness which is already in you , for quick public consumption .
God bless ur mind

Jarus: Stories of young and successful that interest me more are those that never had headstart in terms of being put there by their parents or so (e.g Paddy Adenuga, Kola Abiola, Ladi Balogun etc), but those who were just average Joes and rose to high positions at young age.

Look at:

Atedo Peterside, founded IBTC in 1989 at 32
Fola Adeola (at 35) and Tayo Aderinokun (at 34) founded what is GTB today
Herbert Wigwe and Aig-Imhoukhude, both left GTB at 34 years of age, to found Access Bank. When they left GTB, they can't be less than AGM. So AGM at 34 was an achievement on its own.
Tony Elumelu was in his early 30's when he co-founded STB and became CEO.
Jim Ovia was also in his 30's when he founded Zenith Bank.

All these guys (except Wigwe and Aig) founded these banks 1989-1990. Before that time, we had the old school banks (Union, First, Wema, Cooperative, Savannah, UBA etc), later dubbed First Generation Bank. These guys, most of whom, were working in these banks, probably thought there were more innovative ways of providing financial services than what these conservative First Generation banks were offering. That's an opportunity. Pronto, they explored it, and coupled with IBB's liberalization policy of the era, they established the banks. A couple by the old folks (Adekanye, Osayemah, Femi Ajayi, Duro Emmanuel etc) failed, but these young guys' became mega successful.

Atedo Peterside came back from LSE and realized merchant banking as was practiced in Nigeria was still crude. That's an opportunity. He floated Investment Banking and Trust Company (IBTC) in 1989, to do just one thing: investment banking. He made it.

I think it is about recognizing an untapped opportunity quickly and grabbing it.

They left GTB to lead the management team of Access Bank, this was done by becoming the core investor in the crisis ridden Access bank. The raised the money to become the core investor through an investment vehicle called United Alliance that had people like Maduka, Oyebode, Folawiyo as investors or providers of funds

Atedo equally workeed at NAL Merchant bank for some years and also rose to become a management staff at NAL before he founded IBTC through his personal savings and funds from his father.

Compare them to enterpreneurs like chris gardener and oprah winfrey who came from modest if not wretched backgrounds to the top of their respective trades.

Bone that thing abeg!!! Na silver spoon tinzz

Fola Adeola and Tayo Aderinokun never had influential parents. Fola went to Yaba Tech, while Tayo went to UNILAG.

They were prepared and made good use of the opportunity when it came.

Babangida liberalised banking in the early 90s, the banks in Nigeria prior to the liberalization were FBN, UBA, UBN, Afribank, NAL, FCMB and some regional banks.

Some bankers with entrepreneurial mindset made good use of the opportunity by starting their own banks even though they did not have all the money.

GTB almost missed the deadline for the establishment of their bank if not for the investment made by a renowned Prof. Of Geology, Prof. Oyawoye

Some informed young men are equally making good use of the opportunity available in the capital market to build wealth. Things can not be the same with these guys in the next 20 years.

I am not referring to speculators but intelligent value investors.

Elumelu was seconded from an issuing house/ Investment bank that packaged the recapitalisation of Crystal bank. Rasheed Ladoja was the Chairman of Crystal bank when they ran into financial crisis.

When Crystal Bank was recapitalised by the issuing house, BGL made sure that her clients/workers of BGL bought bloc of shares in Crystal Bank. This bloc of shares now became the largest shareholding in Crystal Bank.
Clients/workers of BGL now deemed it fit to nominate someone from BGL to lead the management team of Crystal Bank, so as to ensure proper management of their funds.

Elumelu was nominated as the MD/CEO of Crystal Bank and one of the things he did was to change the name to Standard Trust Bank.

Till today BGL and UBA still have things in common. BGL equally has substantial shareholding in UBA.

But shareholders were not happy with the performance of UBA under Elumelu. His era was the time of never ending extra ordinary or exceptional expenses. The returns made by the company never trickled down to the shareholders and workers except top management.
But things are getting better in UBA.

Dangote schooled in Egypt and OBJ did several military training abroad. However studying abroad does not guaranty u success. What makes one successful is the inner drive to make it in life, once that drive is there, you then map out a plan to achieve your goals. Mind you success is relative and the outward appearance of success may not be what it seems.

You are very correct. Some people have made mega bucks since the liberalisation of the Telecomm sector in 2001.

Another potential money spinning sector is the Power sector of the economy.
