waybaloo: what does it mean to be successful here in Nigeria? how do you define 'success'

is it all just about money? undecided

You can't separate money from success. It's not only in Nigeria.

Does anyboby know about Nnaeto Orazulike's background? He's a Fidelity Bank Director- one of the top shareholders. He owns Genesis group that operates big Supermarkets, Bakery and Cinemas in PH and East. He's in his early forties. I'm thinking that he started making money in his twenties? Does he have any political godfather?

Everyone would use whatever advantage they’ve got to get ahead. And it is unnecessary ruing just because some have used theirs to get ahead of you. If you had it too, you would have used it.
We shouldn’t be unmindful that some of these advantages were conferred by providence; some by nature; some got it through their concerted effort; and some of course manipulated their way into it. But the point is, people are going to use whatever they’ve got as comparative advantage to get to wherever they want. One thing we must always remember: anyone who will be ahead requires an advantage.
BUT READ (1Kings 18:46 NKJV). With the hand of the Lord on your life, you will get ahead too ASAP, before you are 25years or 35 at most.

Success Stories - Adenike Ogunlesi - C.E.O Ruff 'n' Tumble

Starting from the boot of her car, Adenike Ogunlesi founded children’s clothing business, Ruff ‘N’ Tumble, in Lagos in 1996. It has gone on to become a great success story and exports along the West African coast.

Adenike Ogunlesi is the founder and chief executive of Ruff ‘N’ Tumble an indigenous clothing company in Nigeria that specialises in children’s clothing. From a tiny shop with her and her mother as the main staff, Adenike aka Nike turned Ruff ‘n’ Tumble into an instantly recognizable brand. She has built a reputation for being one of the best manufacturers of children’s clothing in Nigeria, with a brand that can compete with any clothing line globally.
“My kids ran out of pajamas. And I used to make clothing for women. So I decided that I’d just make some pajamas for my kids. ”
In her second year as an undergraduate law student at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Adenike opted out of school unsure of what to do with her life. She then reluctantly accepted her mother’s invitation to work in her womens tailor shop. That experience helped her to discover who she was and what she wanted to do.She is yet another university graduate that never practiced her profession for one day. Trained as a lawyer at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, her father had wanted her to get into a high profile legal practice. But that was not to be. She refused to live out her fathers script. But her mother who made quite an in road into fashion in Ibadan in the early 60s and 70s, asked her to stay with her. Within one year, she said she discovered herself.
“I started in 1996, I was selling from the back of my car, I was selling at bazaars. Everywhere, there was a bazaar, I was there, my table and my suit case, my children and sometimes even my husband. So it all started then.”
Today Ruff ‘N’ Tumble is a thriving business with 50 employees and distribution along the West African coast.

“We don’t export now. Export to the West African coast, yes, all along the West African coast, yes, but to say, America or to England, I’m not interested in it at all. If 40 percent of the 120 million people in Nigeria are children, I have the potential of a huge market here.”
Adenike was featured in the Africa Open for Business documentary and was recognized as the Fate Foundation Model Entrepreneur in 2005. She is a mentor to Junior Achievement of Nigeria and the Fate Foundation.
Mrs Adenike Ogunlesi is another university graduate that never practiced her profession for one day.

For some one to be young and sucessful in life, there are 3 factors involved if not more than 3
1.family influence:if your family are learned n influential packed with financial resources to get u to any level of academic , both onshore n offshore which can easily gives u edge ahead ur peers in labour mkt n career.
2.Hardworking:Hardwork n determinatn is the next after the availability of the 1st resources mentioned above. It s very simple calculation for good input to give good output if properly manage n vice versa.
3.opportunity:This s another major factor which cannot be guaranty even by your level of inteligent. It s opportunity that make staff of Head offices to grow faster than staff of ordinary branch.
I may not be right, but this s my undestanding .

U don't need to be a havard graduate to be successful, Young shall Grow motors was founded by a young Mechanic, Ekenedilichukwu motors started crumbling when he hired Professors to manage the company, plus Innoson Motors is not owned by a graduate, it takes creativity, hardwork and dedication to be successful. Steve Jobs and Bill gates are also University drop outs. So its definitely not about the certificate.

me i believe what Oga Jarus said about working in a head office of a highly successful business or conglomerate. if for no other thing, you tend to understand fast how the business is run, moreso, networking with high net-worth individuals are possible in the head office of large cooperations.

Alao, i watched that video of Dangote that somebody posted here, and he said something about thinking big and being bold. i think these factors combined with so many that guys have suggested here will go a long way to project somebody that early in life.

Aside from the above, entrepreneurship from scratch has to be entirely mindset driven and proper networking too.

Cultured:
Well , from my own perspective and experience , the secret of becoming successful at young age/ at any age are as follows :

- Master an art through either formal or informal education and always remain innovative
- Imbibe self and continuous education - Leaders are readers ( although, not all readers are leaders )
- Live on your own opinion , because living on others opinion is the easiest route to failure and death
- Surround yourself with people who're more passionate and informed than you are in your chosen field ( chose your team wisely )
- Work hard , but never forget " Smart Work ", because it pays better
- Expansion is good but remember that it doesn't equal profit- profit is what will keep you going
- Positive mindset is also very important , because misinformation and misconception are very bad diseases

Lest I forget ,have it at the back of your mind that theory is different from practical and that experience remains the best teacher ( our prayer always is, may we never be consumed in the cause of experimenting ) . And "quitters never win " they say , but never forget/undermine " Surrender Tactics" , because at some point in the cause of your journey to success you will need it and when applied rightfully will lead you to the desired promise land . Good luck to all who aspires to become successful in life .

Bye the way , you don't necessarily need to attend any IVY league school neither at home nor abroad to become successful - having the privilege to attend one will only help to gloss that greatness which is already in you , for quick public consumption .
very matured advice.

Though this thread is stale,i will dish out my opinion. "Success is what you call it "-Davis
Making a mark is no respecter of status ( age , education, class or race). Believe me for this that no one cares about the creator of things( systems, institutions, businesses, products and whatever human output) but they gladly consume things with excellence and beauty as the only prerequisite for embracing creations .
wannabe a successful person then do this:
1.Be a creator of what you love and would make the world or even your street a better place
2.Create
3.Recreate.

Wannabe a dissatisfied person all your life then do this :
1.Be a consumer and only consume .
2.Be obsessed about consuming and boast of it .
