ba7man: How do you upgrade an environment that's already illegally occupied?? Their shops are built on the drains, road medians, the set-backs are already filled with their shanty homes??.....heck, there were roads in Lagos that were blocked due to trading activities.

They occupy every little spare space they can see till they were living under bridges......where do they keep coming from??

The lands most of them live on were illegally occupied so the LASG has no one to answer to if they decide to bulldoze them. That's what they attempted and everyone started screaming "War against the poor".

They even build illegal structures on the water!

Fashola had to stop them from illegally expanding Makoko, because they were getting to close to the bridge.

You forget to add that they paid council/state officials before they were allowed to build this illegal shops. So who is to blame? The person that gave the permission to build illegally or the illegal builder who got a legal permission.

well, you're right in a way. The previous Governments and the Nigerian system let this trend thrive. They actually still pay rent to live in those slums.

Someone has to put a stop to it and reverse the trend regardless. I remember in the 90's when the corporate buildings in Lagos Island were heavily surrounded by dirty markets. That has been reduced by a large extent now. When Tinubu completed the upgrading of the Lagos Island C.B.D, beggers were the first to help themselves to choice spots on the walkways then.

Why do you think the companies packed up and moved to V.I?? They followed them in the Molues till Tinubu had to put a stop to that.

malc619: The New Lagos Mega City isn't for the Lawless...

The New Lagos Mega City isn't for Miscreants....

The New Lagos City isn't for "Human-Nuisance"...

If you fall into any of the above categories, go back to your village before Fashola go send you there without a farewell party..
Mumu, it seems you did not read the thread very well. The thread said Lagos is only meant for the rich irrespective of your ethnicity. As me and you fall into the category of poor people, we should be planning to relocate to our various villages. grin

How is a place illegally occupied, are you telling me that every poor citizens living in Lagos state are all from other states, or how do you as a Government intend to withdraw a Landowners property just because you think he or she is too poor to live in Lagos, the truth remains that those people who live in those messy environments happens to be the owners of such land, and you cannot by any means take away what rightfully belongs to them just because they are poor to build a modern day house, what happens to Empowerment programs, where by the government uses your land to setup an housing unit and in return get her money back through Tenement/Sales, and then re-reimbursing the Land owner as well as providing part of the Housing unit to him as the rightful owner of the Land, the truth is that, our Government expect everyone to be Rich, whereas they don't do anything about it.

But not bringing those that collected the approval fee to justice smacks of injustice and that will not hinder others from doing it again. And that previous govt looks like a PDP govt or am I wrong?

[quote author=amarilo] But not bringing those that collected the approval fee to justice smacks of injustice and that will not hinder others from doing it again. And that previous govt looks like a PDP govt or am I wrong? [/quote you see we should stop deluding ourselves in this country, granted this thread is specifically about Lagos state but the underlying problem cuts across all strata of the society/country and that is we have a massively inadequate if not non existent social security/welfare scheme in this country not withstanding the fact that Nigeria is rich enough to implement such schemes. As a government, you do not wait until a violent revolution before you do what is right. It all starts with a proper and credible national census and eureka the ball will be in motion to make the masses happy. Ive been through many states in this country and it baffles me that a simple thing like adequate housing poses a problem more complex than nuclear physics and further maths combined for our elected officials. God bless Nigeria
