It is not close to any that you mentioned, but weekends in any of them would not be out of the question.

I just googled for the city and it seemed like a a peaceful, calm and liveable town. Btw, how do you Nigerian find these places that seem off the radar. There's nothing wrong with them. It's just that i assume that Nigerians would live in popular American towns. It's like someone coming to Nigeria and going to live in Damaturu or Kebbi instead of Lagos., Abuja, PH, Enugu, Kano etc.

I'm actually American. Because of the university and the many hospitals and doctors offices, we have a large community of foreigners. We have a few international markets because of this. Anything they don't stock, I'm sure they can get. That's the thing about Texas, the people are pretty friendly. Especially in the 'villages'. wink

Getting an f1 visa is very easy as long as you have your documents complete. I have helped people process there admission before. The very important thing would be your financial statement. One way not to refused is if the financial statement is yours or belongs to someone with the same surname as you. The embassy wants to be sure of your financial capability before giving you a VISA.
what steps do you think I can take prior to the completion of ma degree and what if I dont have an account bearing my surname, is there a way out?

I want to correct a notion here Afam
The problem is not the population of blacks there but the type of blacks
We are currently house hunting and all the houses that had black neighbors scored highly on my list because they had to have good jobs to live in the neighborhoods we were looking at
I am not afraid to live with fellow black people around me if they are in the same income bracket as myself.
They would be professionals just like us.
There are neighborhoods in atlanta area with almost everyone black
I have visited some
But these are areas where the average family income is 100k plus so they will be good.

Rule of thumb to know if your neighborhood is good or not
Check the school ratings
The good neigborhoods have the schools with the highest ratings and highest test scores
That is what also keeps the property value high
You can say this again! Too many are lead to believe "avoid Black areas if you can period". In the past as soon as Blacks got their heads above water they gravitate to White areas. Blacks are now establishing their own upscale communities and Atlanta is number one for that. Does this get much publicity?..Guess why? Hmmm....three thumbs up for you OP!

There is no step you can take for now except you want to start preparing for your standardize test (eg GRE) . You have to graduate and have your transcript ready then u can now start thinking of applying to schs

fratochi: Hi babyosisi, I love and admire your courage, wisdom , intelligence and most importantly selflessness. God will richly reward your kindness and sincerity in helping your fellow country men and women against all odds. Having said that, I wish to advise that you interact with the average nairalander on a face level, because the truth of the matter is that there's no age/ reasoning bracket for registering new members, as such both infants, teenagers and the likes are free to make comments and possibly insult you if your not careful enough to avoid them. God will help us all.

Thanks dear
I will try to heed your wise advise

fratochi: Having stated the obvious above, I wish to solicit your help/response to the following: my wife and I are professionals residing and working here in nigeria. I am a practising Architect by profession, while my wife is a medical doctor. We are what you can call a young and relatively comfortable nigerian couple and we are presently exploring our options, part of which is migration to the states of canada. I am looking forward to doing my Phd over there while working on part time, in the same vein, my wife will be furthering her medical residency programme while working too. Now I need your clearification and advise in the following area(s); what's your take on the whole idea of migrating?, what are our like options to facilitate the migration?, what are the challenges/constraints for a couple with our portfolio?, how soon and how well can we settle if we migrate in view of green cards, work permit, the f1s and f4s and so on? What is the demand and remuneration for a construction and medical professional over there? Just any other advise you deem fit that will be of benefit both to us and to other aspiring fellow country men. Thanks in advance. God bless.

Let me answer you the best I can.
From what you write, you are probably in a higher income bracket than many
Probably have your own house, two cars and can afford the little luxuries Nigeria offers .
With good jobs ,a buoyant bank account and a solid person inviting you,you can obtain visiting visas to the USA for Summer or winter holidays.
I will advise that you come on a visit first and see the USA for yourself. If you are successful, they usually give 2 year multiple entry .
So come for a month long visit or two
Two months is enough time to have have a good feel of things.

If finally you decide to emigrate
Your medical doctor wife will have to take the USMLE exams ,pass through what they call matching to get into a residency training program
It is very competitive to get placement because she is competing with American and other foreign graduates but many others have done it and succeeded.
There are sites online where she can find every detail she needs about USMLE and foreign graduates
She will need papers from NMDC,discharge papers from houseman ship,NYSC,evidence of employment in Nigeria etc.
If she has a classmate who has recently migrated to the USA and gone through the hoops, she needs to contact them, they will give her the latest information.
But I can realistically tell you that it will take her at least 6 years or more to qualify as a specialist from the moments she steps her foot here.
It will take about two years to take those 3 steps of USMLE

If she is blessed to get into residency immediately,it will take another three years to train and another one year of fellowship.
Residents are paid during training just like in Nigeria
And the hospital will help her obtain a J visa once accepted.
After training, she will look for a job that will help apply for an H visa for her.
They are not hard to come by,the only thing is that she may end up ivery small towns and sign a contract to work there for a number of years and they file a green card for her.
That is the path most foreign medics follow.
Let me also add those USMLE Exams are taken in Ghana ( at least I heard),check that out,see if Nigeria has centers too.
She can obtain the relevant books and take them before coming. It is harder that way.
people do better when they attend preparatory classes with centers like KAPLAN before taking the exams.

I don't know much about architects with foreign degrees .the only Architect I know from Nigeria is now a nurse but you can contact the relevant boards and inquire what it takes to get licensed here.
Certainly you should go back to do a masters or PHD and obtaining an FI shouldn't be too difficult if you can prove that you have funding especially if you are already here.

as a huzzler I mean a street boy thats fends for himself which state will you suggest for me, I have a close pal in maryland Washington dc..
my concern now is all this do cument they asked for at the embassy, like that of account wil be the major problem.
if there is anyway I can go about it without any shady steps
am studying Transport management. . logistics and road to be precise. .
Thanks in anticipation

Afam answered you well
You need to convince them at the interview that you can support yourself while here and meet their other requirements
Maryland DC area is good because of public transportation so you can get around easier
Yes many people are denied visas
Many are also given

Afam,small towns have their advantages
They are usually low in crime, cheaper housing and are great places to raise kids
If you are a social person that likes hanging around fellow Nigerians you won't like it
And since you intend on having a business, you are better off in a bigger city perhaps
Yes there are Nigerians in Omaha Nebraska and Maine
I know a Nigerian couple in Maine that have a private practice sef.
We are everywhere

. Great! Response!, babyosisi your responses sometimes is like a sweet tonic, you do it with so much passion and grace! The Lord will continue to strenghten you in your good works. Now, I have heard stuff like you can get a school to admit one in a Phd programme and in such cases your wife automatically is entitled to a visa/work permit, how true is that, and also in view of the USMLE exam stuff, I believe one can be practicing in a private clinic or hospital pending when she qualifys for the USMLE, is that possible? And if it is, what is the remuneration like, and which of the states or small towns as you mentioned can you recommend. Thanks again.

@babyosisi, what are the chances of a qualified nigerian lawyer over there in the states. What are his chances of getting a good job or he has to hustle too?if he has to hustle what kind of things can he engage his self with. Secondly,is it compulsory to get married to a citizen before achieving the "citizen" status. Thanks..

Thanks for the compliments
Yes,if you get an FI visa, your dependents( wife and children) will automatically get F2
You must make sure however that your funds are enough to support you all
If they determine that the funds are not enough,it could cost you a denial of your F1
What most people do is come alone for the FI then while you are here, you file for your dependent to join you.
Yes your wife can work with an F2 visa, she is eligible for a work permit with that.

There are some states that allow holders of foreign medical degrees to work with what they call limited license not as doctors but as physician assistants.I know a couple that did that while taking their exams.
You can only work in places like prisons lol.when I lived in the north east, Massachusetts was one of those states ,there could be others.
I will check on that and get back to you but you can imagine such jobs are tough to get and I imagine not stable.
There could be others states too.
With a foreign degree you cannot work in any hospitals or clinics as a doctor
I don't know of any state that will allow it.

The only job you can do is perhaps as a medical assistant in a doctor's office
Medical assistants only take vitals signs I.e weight, height and some draw blood
As a foreigner coming into a new system I will advise that she starts by finding a hospital that will allow her to do an observatory or shadowing.
She goes there and follows the doctors for their rounds etc and sees what they do and how they do it
She has to take that seriously and show up like a paid staff
It is a good way to start off
My husband did that
He got an unpaid position and Was even doing night calls with them, going to the OR for surgeries with them etc long hours.
He got to to know the big shots in the group and impressed them by his participation and when the time came,he got great references from them when he eventually applied to residency programs.

Medical assistants make about $12/hr
For states that can allow her practice as a physician assistant, she can make up to $25/ hr
I will check into the physician asst PA thing and get back to you.

To your last question,it doesn't matter where you come to
She will end up spending 3 years wherever she gets residency training ,they are tough to come by so wherever she gets one,she will move there and would likely move again or remain at the same location for a one year fellowship.
Wherever she gets a waiver job that will file for an H visa, she will go there.
You will have your pick of where to end up after all this.
The first six years won't be easy.

I am preparing for my visa interview for spring semester at Utah State University though I will transfer to San Jacinto College Pasadena, TX when I arrive US.

My questions are;

1. What is the chances of getting employed in the aviation industry after graduation from College with an associate degree in Aviation Management? What is the pay like?

2. How is Pasadena, TX? What is the transportation network like? Is the city developed?

Lovely thread, keep up the good work babyosisi, am a final year medical student here in nigeria and also hoping to do a residency in the u.s, I have read your reply to fratochi but I still want to ask if its possible to still be in nigeria and be matched for a residency programme in the u.s after passing the usmle or I must be a resident in the u.s before I can be matched. Also do you envisage any problem in getting a visa for the usmle cs step2 as this step requires me to come to the u.s. Lastly, was your husband doing any other job while volunteering in hospitals to learn the ropes. Thanks in anticipation.

I have never been to Pasadena TX but I do know that it is not too far away from Houston
I know a lady that studied nursing at San jacinto College and made the drive daily and back from Houston

" goes to google" grin

It's only 16 miles from Houston they say ,so you won't be far from a big city should you decide to live there
Houston is quite large so the 16 miles would depend on what part of Houston.
You will find all the conveniences of a large city there also
Texas generally has no reliable public transport so you need a car to get around.

After San jacinto College you may now want to transfer to a 4 year college and get your bachelors

Like I told people earlier, the easiest jobs for an immigrant to get are in the medical field,I will be frank with you
That is where the most demand is
That doesn't mean it's impossible to get jobs in other areas
