So you mean people paid all these hefty fees and still ended up in unemployment?

Money which if saved...attend OAU/UNN/UI/etc....will remain to be used to startup something post graduation.

Well...

I remember how OAU students in 2008 defeated all Nigerian universities in Stuents In Free Enterprises (SIFE); went to Africa, defeated all the universities in the continent. It went ahead in the world grand finale where it emerged second.

When I was in part 1, a room mate of mine in Awo Hall who was in final year said he had been in that same room since his first year. In Awo Hall you can't drive anybody out of your room as long as he doesn't use your bed space.

First class or Third class, we should all belong to the common sense class which I believe no one has a monopoly of.

Your 45k for 4 years was heavily heavily subsidized by the Government. You know what subsidy means right ? In other words, you were on scholarship by the government. I'm quite sure all these 45k school fees for 4 years doesn't even make up to 10 percent of d worth of d education u recieved. Someone has had to pay for it for the 90 percent.Government.

Whats your point flourescent? Why do we have a government? Why do we pay taxes? Why do we have natural resources? I had the best I could ask for in terms of experience, learning and what have you. Over seas, governments heavily subsdize education because it is not meant to be a luxury...if it was, the great leaders of yester-years and today would probably not be called great. If you being an average Nigerian and your papa and mama get like 4 pikins (all things being equal), how exactly would your parents sponsor these kids to school if Babcock, Madonna, etc were the only schools available and the tuition per year is nothing less than N1.5m per head? And say your first born intends to study Medicine, second born Engineering, you Accounting, etc? Did you think about that? Those leaders who championed the cause of free education in the western region had very good, crystal clear reason and vision for championing that cause. I kinda think yours is blurry.

In 100level I paid 2,000 naira as tuition while from 200level to 400level I paid 2,500 naira @ Unijos (1999-2004). in total I paid 9,500 for 4yrs study LOL. If your parents can afford it pls go to a private university to avoid strike but if you want the best go to a Federal or state University.

mko abiola: But hw true is it dat dey ar offered automatic job(s) afta graduation?
Which I totally argued wit a frend.
What FREAKING automatic job? Please!!!!! Na confirm mirage! I know a guy who finished from Covenant University, he did Info Tech, did well. Guy still dey surulere for Lag now dey manage him papa pure water company fro almost how many years now. Many of them CU grads are everywhere vying for the same starter positions HNDs are applying to.
I mean, after graduation, you wait for a call-up to NYSC which may take forever, and then you serve at God-knows-where. So after service, you go back to the school to tell them say dem owe you a job abi? C'mon, its a decoy. What dey actually wanted to convey is that a cert from their school could land you mouth-watering jobs automatically...That's the selling point. Unfortunately, that BS don't sell in today's labour market unless your papa get biz wey u fit run. And if your papa fit pay N3m year plus other miscellaneous money, then he is sure-footed and job might not necessarily be a big issue after graduation. But that the school automatically offers you a job after grad is a super story.

Yes you pay taxes but University isn't meant for everybody. If you wanna go to harvard , you think the US government is gonna say because its citizens pay tax it should kill itself and make it cheap for everyone ? I don't see why the endowment tactic and scholarship schemes employed in other unis over d world can't be employed here. Secondly, awolowo was excellent at subsidizing education from d root. How many of us here would truly send our children to a public primary school today? When last did the FG establish a secondary school ? All attention is going to the money gulping university system and people are coming here to brag about cheap school fees not knowing the Government is paying over d odds just to meet up. If there's anything that needs subsidizing cos u pay taxes, its d primary and secondary schools simply because every child must have QUALITY primary and secondary education. Many succesful people in naija on d other hand didn't even go to uni.

Those western leaders championed not just free education but quality education. What you have now is almost free cos u pay peanuts but definitely not quality cos if u know how much d government subisdizes it by, u will be shocked.

Re: Most Expensive Private Universities In Nigeria Unveiled by delors(m): 6:04pm On Dec 22, 2013
Lyoncrescent: Sighs.

Not Again. So the fact u pay 35k or 30k in Unilag or OAU, doesn't mean that's worth your education is worth. Now assume there are 20,000 undergraduates in unilag for example paying 30,000 naira annually, that comes to 600 million naira per year making 50 million naira per month.

Do you actually think 50 million is enough to run the university, pay non-academic staff, academic staff, research grants etc ? Don't forget public unis also get also sort of grants such as ETF. Don't forget these public universities have already established structures unlike their private counterparts which are constantly building and improving. If you look @ it critically, the government is subsidizing public university education heavily. If you went to a public university, u were on scholarship by d government cos ur school fees is chicken change.

Quality is Relative. I can tell you private university graduates are having d upper hand. Especially with all dis employers now placing age caps for employment. An average private uni graduate is 22 and has a 2:1 and at 22 has completed nysc.

Education is meant to be relevant not difficult and private unis are getting it right.
Your view is debatable. I 'll suggest you post it as a topic on NL some time. The fact that you finished from an expensive university doesnt mean the knowledge you acquired is more expensive than the guy who finished from a government funded university. In terms of the quality of research, it is not debatable that the public unis over-surpass the private ones. Comparing a university like Caleb to (not with) say, LASU is an embarrassment. Comparing a uni like Babcock (plus CU combined) to OAU or UI or UNILAG is like trying to determine whether a man is sleeping or dead - big difference.
The lecturers who teach at private unis are more less the ones recruited from public universities or hustlers still trying to get their feet. I can tell you i have seen them and I know the difference. A department head or faculty head at a public university is recruited to a private Uni and he automatically joins the school's senate board. What's that? A school that started yesterday is in no way comparable to a school that has been in existence for over 60 years doing great year in year out.
Private unis are confirmed business centres. No carry overs. Pay the right guy, you pass your failed courses. Students graduate with no real life skills, nothing.
Bros, it is an endless story. If you paid N950k per year for something you could get for as low as N45k with better quality, more world recognition, and with a history of resounding success globally, would you pick the former or the latter? That's a rational judgement challenge, let me know what you think. smiley
