The Romans converted one of their popular Pagan festival to xmas. They abolish this festival and renamed it to xmas.

They converted to Christians and changed their festival to christian festival.

I love christmas, my church allows it, but to be truthful, i and 90% christmas celebrants don't celebrate it for the reason it was made.
