Henry120: photo related.

This is the IGIRIGI Armoured personnel carrier, designed and manufactured by the nigerian army. It is already been fielded in the north-east and is expected to be fielded in much larger numbers in the coming years.

We are going to also get in the coming months, a chinese-nigerian APC Assembly plant in nigeria. Work is currently at advanced stages.

Whats the difference between IFC & APC?

Let me tell you something only about 1percent of Nigerians know.....Sambisa is more of a "city"...Boko camps are filled with families...they have internal governments in camps, camp chiefs, islamic schools for arabic learning for their kids, organised social structures and so on...BH camps in sambisa are not just bushes filled with jobless gun-totting youths, If the army decides to do the Hiroshima treatment, assuming we have air assets for that, imagine the reaction of BH closet sympathisers like Amnesty International, SaharaReporters, and one Sheikh who we all know......What we need to do is to make sure that every terrorist convoy that heads out of Sambisa does not come back smiling...inside Sambisa are children.....who didn't choose their fathers............

Not in Nigeria. Everything is tag political and agenda against Muslim and northerners. When our troops was recording success and heating BH badly, did you see reaction of APC, Northern elders, AC, that tells you the kind of politics we play in Nigeria, if everyone has cooperated with the NA and stop seeing the military as Jonathan's army maybe BH would have been history today

My heart bleeds seeing this picture. I guess this is one of the reason, NA is recording casualties everyday in this war against the demented BH guys. We all need to apologize for condemning and complaining that the NA hasn't been capable of dislodging BH or taking to long a time to accomplish the desired goal. In a sane country with sane leaders, these men would be air lifted and dropped to wherever they are going. This picture clearly show how vulnerable our soldiers have been.

Where has all the huge defense budget gone to or spent on?

Listen bro, stop comparing us to the US, an average American will rather die for his country than any religion, You can't be comparing black and white,we are not same, I'm sorry if I have to use black and white, irrespective of the republican /democrats you made reference to, you don't expect Americans to go on rampage at the utterance of Romney or any politician, but in Nigeria where you have jobless youth that worship politicians and can even die for 5000 naira then you need be careful. Do you think any American will go out to protest the removal of any corrupt politician from office?

Staring with Stella Odua, I hope you know how many public officials are been investigated for embezzlement of public funds, and you see their kinsmen come out to protest. We are yet to develop to that level where an average Nigerian or youth does not just listen to politicians who whatever they say or do is to their selfish advantage. If you are following up with edo politics, you see the power tussle between the PDP and APC both parties have their thugs and they arm them to go protest in govt. house.

@egbaguy, I'll refer to read the story of how Sadam Hussein was captured in that hole despite the huge billions of dollars spent.......intelligence of an officer. Read also and possibly watch how Osama Bin Laden was killed.......intelligence of CIA. SiriusBlack has pointed out here that NA needs to use technology and intelligence to win this war, it's not about cock and shoot. Think about the innocent people captured by BH who are working as slaves in Sambisa "city". Should these ones be obliterated together with BH insurgents? Even if it is so, it won't stop the sympathisers outside Sambisa to continue with the insurgency.

Whats the difference between IFC & APC?

The question you are asking I presume is what's the difference between a IFV (Infantry fighting vehicle) and an APC (Armoured personnel carrier)

The question is no longer clear cut as it used to be, previously the IFV was a heavily armoured vehicle mainly tracked that could offer fire support and the APC was armoured but not heavily and mainly wheeled. However, things have changed and evolved just like cars we can clearly define a sports car, with two and four door sports sedans and even SUV's that can offer the same performance.

The battlefield has changed and we now have MRAPS which have evolved from the APC and IFV.

Generally the definitive issue is armour and then weapons station, so for instance the Bradley M2 and CV-90 are considered to be IFV's, and are tracked as well as being amphibious with very resilient armour they can withstand RPG7'S & 30mm rounds. However the Patria, VBCI and Boxster can stand against 30mm and RPG7 and are often called IFV's as well as APC's.

All of these platforms can be fitted with a range of adapted remote weapon stations all stabilised, so they could have 40mm or 30mm and or antitank missiles.

When you consider these attributes it tells you QUALITY wins over QUANTITY. The Igirigi APC that some are calling as the game changer is essentially a tin box on a 4x4 chassis tarted up to look the part, just like the Spartan streit, they are light armoured vehicles a Boko technical will rip it apart best it can stand are 5.56 & 7.62 rounds, it cant even take a 50cal. in my opinion a waist of money.

One Patria with a 30/40mm remote weapons station will take out 5 technical in 3 minutes at even 1000 metres on the move in hot pursuit, accuracy rate at that distance is about 95%.

Siriusblack if you are ever in one those light armoured vehicles & U Jam boko i beg u jump off hit the dust cause they offer no protection from a boko technical. Those technicals and their 20mm are not stabilised, no optic sight will not be accurate beyond 500 metres just lots of round flying everywhere. Unfortunately our AK isn't effective beyond 150 metres, use the Dragunov I have seen(hope you have enough of them ) isn't great but pretty accurate up to 800 metres so take gunners out, and of course pray.

Happy hunting and God speed

An IFV (infantry fighting vehicle) is designed to engage in Actual combat while also carrying troops. IFV's are always armed with 20 or 30mm cannons and above. So, they take troops to the frontlines and remain in the frontlines providing fire-support.

An APC (armoured personnel carrier) is designed only to carry troops only. They are armed with defensive weapons only, A GPMG or a 50 CAL. Take troops to the frontline and leave, as they do not have the Armour or Fire-power to support troops.

However, for LICW (low intensity conflict) and COIN, vehicles like the IGIRIGI, MRAPs and bushmasters are increasingly been deployed, as the enemy in these sort of conflicts do not posses heavy weaponry.

An MRAP would not save the soldiers in them from RPG or 14.5mm fire. They cannot withstand such pressure. However, generally, insurgents do not always have RPGs or 14.5mm.

All these vehicles have a role they play in a conflict. So for example in mali, the French deployed their VBCI, as well as ERC-90 Sagie, Panhard VBL and VAB.

Na Wa for us in this Country o! Bashing Nigeria and talking down at her is a National pastime to be done at every opportunity.

If you had done just a bit of research you would have know that very few armed forces can afford to airlift their forces everywhere, talk less of any African Country. Even the British royal marines in the Falklands War as recently as 1982 had to trek about 80km from Port San Carlos to Port Stanley (the stronghold of the Argentine forces), with each man carrying up to 60kg of personal equipment and weapons.

In Nigeria, we just imagine everything must be easy, and when we encounter any challenges it must be because our government is incompetent.

Our Government is certainly not perfect, but it is not necessarily at fault for everything wrong with us!!!!

Bro...the topic is quite sensitive...Troops rotation was one of the issues behind the unfortunate mutiny...but ill give you some info....
Before the 7th Division was established, frontline troops were made up of splinters of troops mostly from battalions from the Armoured Division units at Jos, Bauchi with some units from Kaduna and even Ibadan...After the 7th Division was established, it was splintered into several infantry battalions, some armoured battalions and a few SF battalions...troop rotation however varies across various areas...varies for officers and soldiers...Armoured brigades are based almost entirely up north so, thiers is to very regular....in summary, tours of duty are about a year and half for regular soldiers...mostly it just depends on if ure in infantry battalions, artillery brigades or armoured battalions..Recently some guys from Lagos were injected..some artillery guys from akure too...so, in about 2 years from now, every infantry soldier in the N.A will have real cpmbat experience under his belt...every single soldier.

Just to give you examples to show that the answers are not always easy.

The FG is currently battling the opposition to raise $1billion for equipment, and it has been like 'pulling teeth'.
Lets assume the money was secured fully. Split it between the Army, Air force, navy and DSS in a 3:3:3:1 ratio. This would give the Airforce a sum of $300m to spend.

If we even look at air mobility which you talked about, one Super Puma helicopter from France would cost you $15m apiece, and will carry only about 24 troop into battle. So this entire 'Father xmas' money govt is fighting for will only deliver 20 units of helicopter, enough to carry only 500men or so, not up to a battalion.

We neva talk fueling, periodic maintenance of the helicopters etc. In fact if you did a ballot on this site many people would prefer to spend this money on jet fighters and attack helicopters, not troop carriers.

In summary, the matter no easy. Not everything wrong in Nigeria is about GEJ and corruption.

A lot of the issues have to do with us as a people, producing poor quality leaders for the last 60 plus years!!!!!!

No, they aren't soft skin. MRAPs are APCs basically. They don't protect soldiers from 14.5mm and RPG fire. Only Tanks can provide that sort of protection.

I'm not pro-GEJ or pro APC, as I have little time for ghana-must-go politics, still I'm 100percent loyal to the President..and will die for him if necessary, but I'm not his supporter....I think the oppostion's behaviour in all of this has been very shameful...Every single time a bomb goes off, it is an opportunity for finger-pointing and attacks on the government...What will they have the man do?! He just requested for USD1bn and they are pushing against it...is that not sick? What could a president have done that he has not done in the area of defence? Instead of pointing fingers at the same people who were pro-BH when BH was bombing churches..the same people who had the guts to say that the State of Emergency is not needed..same people who refused to call their supporters into order when they were killing corpers after an election loss...the same people who created the Boko haram sect in the early 2000s in the first place...the same people who were caught red-handed with phone logs to BH insurgents!..Red-handed..Is anyone still asking me who BH's sponsors are? I have a lot of respect for the General, but, right now he is sorrounded by murderers..Nigerians, let's turn our anger towards the Modu-Sherrifs, the informant senator, the anti-FG governors, the pro-BH sheikhs, and the clowns at CAN...this country is at war...don't let anyone decieve you..this is a civil War...There is no time for APC vs PDP jargons while slave raiders keep killing men, women and children...It is time to put our ethnic differences behind us and work together as ONE to end this madness...A boko haram bomb does not care what village you are from...they are ENEMIES OF THE STATE. Or is it when I start uploading photos of dead villagers? A year old baby was cut in half and hung on a pike, by the bastards...same bastards that Amnesty International calls "Victims of Poverty"...I wept for days for the child...Are Nigerians thinking?! Sitting in the comfort of their homes in Lagos and Abuja watching DSTV? This is a time for unity...our politicians keep planting the seed of discord among us and we keep taking the bait!...You don't have to be pro-GEJ to support the Government's fight against this madness!!
