adebriana: @ OP,u can't compare d salaries of health workers in nigeria with their foreign counterparts cos the systems are different...in the Us for example medical doctors spend @ least 12 yrs in school compared to d 6 yrs education in Nigeria and spend much more cash dan those in Nigerian Med schools and the standard of living in the US is higher than that in Nigeria...so there's no need for comparison
You're wrong dear.
12 years in training in the USA is inclusive of specialist training in some fields. 6 years in training in Nigeria is just basic medical training, specialist training adds it up to almost the same as that of USA.
Don't embellish facts to make a point!

okparaugo: It is a very big shame when all a person can achieve is running after increased pay when he/she could better his own pay via private practice.

It is not uncommon to see multimillionaire doctors and pharmacits who through private practice have dwarfed government pay and bettered their lives...

Every time we be hearing this noise. Smh..
I agree! more and more doctors are moving to private practice in Nigeria. private practice is particularly profitable for specialist doctors.

DebateNigeria:
I am here again. Let's debate this. I have to do some research.
But I am also aware that in some school of nursing (in Nigeria), student nurses are paid whereas medical students are not.
I disagree with you completely.
Anytime they are taking a survey, they take a survey of people in similar group. There is no way they will compare salary of a medical consultant to that of an entry nurse.
To make headway in this argument we must decide to use USA as our case study and then look at how much they pay specialist nurses and specialist doctors, entry level nurse and entry level doctor (GP or medical officer). Resident doctors are in school I guess, so we can only compare them to those in school of nursing.
@bolded. I was surprised to know that students in Midwifery get 12-15k every month. I don't know about other nurses but am sure of students in school of Midwifery. Am sure the hell will release it's demons, should medical students be paid.
Another thing that shocked me was the fact that nurses are taught how to attack Doctors right from their schools.

@topic. I really don't have energy for this debate/fight, whichever you choose to call it, so i will it pass. tongue

prettyprettywow: You forgot that these are salaries of specialist Doctors(consultants) with over 12yrs of education and average of $300k in student loan (for US Drs) as compared to the salaries of an entry level nurse ( 4yrs degree and less than $50k student loanfor US graduates)). You fail to realize that in US, resident Drs earn an average of $45k, quite below the salary of the least hospital worker. So when they say Drs aern 200k, know that they are talking about consultants, and if you wanna compare with nurses, talk about nurse practitioners where some specialist nurse practitioners earn more than some specialist Drs e.g Anaesthetic nurses (CRNA) earn more than family physicians. Our Drs want to reap where they did not sow.

Besides, nobody is asking to earn same salary as Drs. That has never been the issue
I have seen this table before, and it actually refers to the salary of GPS, hence the term country doctors or rural doctors.
A orthopedic surgeon for example earns an average of 413, 000 USD per annum.
We all know resident doctors even in Nigeria earn well below some ADNs and DDNs; Nigerian doctors are not being overpaid.
On a salary of 45, 000 USD, that's a take home pay of roughly #500, 000naira. How much is the take home pay of a senior registrar in Nigeria?

Go and rest jare. all the medical and health sciences students pay the same school fees in Govt owned universities. Haba!! don't start spreading lies. let there be relativity in university tuition!!!!
DrObum:
Please which Nigerian university did you attend where you paid the same fees with a medical student?
Go back and check, there's no where that medical school cost the same as other tertiary institutions.
And the fact that we don't operate a loan system doesn't mean people didn't work out their salvation trying to get trained in medical school!

Your bickering and animosity won't help the system nor help your life.
I believe in life, if you aren't satisfied with what you're doing, leave it, go get trained and join the team you want to be like!
You don't need to fight and attempt bringing down the entire sector because you wish to be treated like the other professionals.

Bitcoin: This is a funny post, I know nurses who make over $240,000 a year in NY, now bear in mind they have two jobs and work several hours of overtime.

Please hit me up quick and tell me where.

I have a few nurse friends in Maryland here that will like to get paid like that.

It is sad, really.
Doctors should be seen, not heard, like clergy, in the background providing efficient healthcare services to people.
However, we live in a predominantly capitalist society, and things have changed a lot since Hippocrates penned the Oath.
The sad truth is:
Modern, specialty medicine is big business ALL OVER THE WORLD.
A blepharoplasty and a nose job can go for as much as 12, 000 USD in the US.
There is absolutely no law that says doctors, just like everyone else, can't operate their private establishment. They're afterall providing services.
Infact, popular plastic surgeons on reality TV like 90210 operate out of their private clinics, not government hospitals.

In US,
4 years of undergrad
4 years of medical school
3-7 years of residency
3 years of fellowship in subspecialty
that is roughly 15 years on the average in a system where things work perfectly.

Shame on everyone here abusing doctors that will ever consult a doctor for illness or anything.
To you all, Nigerian doctors don't know a thing and are proud.
From this moment on always consult johesu and traditionalist but if you do otherwise, a big shame on you all.

School fees are definitely not the same.

why everything for you na fight?
like say una never realise say which ever way this drama end, doctors no go fit lose.
if the other healthcare workers spoil the public system, everyone including johesu go run go private sector(for those who can afford it)
now guess who is king in the private sector?
all it takes is for the doctors to refuse treatment to patients without lab tests or radiological exams ratified by doctors.
this automatically makes sure that johesu-run outfits can ONLY treat patients with johesu lab&radio exams.
doctors will comfortably create a strata system in private health.

femyodsky: Other health workers want to be collecting the same amount of Money as doctors. Whereas, it's not so in other parts of the world.
See how it is outside the country. I don't think it should be different here.

Your data is incomplete inaccurate and misleading. doctors and every other worker in the UK (I assume it is so elsewhere) have a salary RANGE. Everyone does not earn the same and salaries rise with experience and additional qualifications over a career lifetime.
Let us take Nurses salary as provided by you this is just wrong.
More accurate information on Nurses wages can be found here;
http://www.hospitaldr.co.uk/features/nurses-and-nhs-managers-pay-scales-for-20122013

Nurses have a salary range of between £14 000 and £ 98 000 . As such the information you have presented is broadly speaking; USELESS for any meaningful analysis

There is one further point you miss out here which is crucial : How many hours do these people work weekly: Generally it is 37.5 .Now if you compare this to the number of hours doctors work and compute the wages on an hourly basis you will find that many workers earn more per hour than many doctors.

Now, that's completely false for NYC. I got numerous job offers in NYC as a nurse anesthetist and the most I got was $130K/year and that's as a CRNA. I don't care how much a regular nurse works in NYC, YOU WILL NOT MAKE OVER $140K. For $140K, that nurse might as well live in the hospital.

What exactly are you arguing about ? That when these guys make mistake doctor will get sued?
Are they practising medicine for the doctor to be sued?
When a nurse , pharmacists and the rest commits any form of malpractice or an act of negligence when carrying out their duties.....they are sued based on that and their license most times are revoked.
Check out the instances where they are sued on the WWW.

It is called EBR (Employees Bragging Rights)

It usually takes one manager or one crazy minister to smack them back to reality.

It is entertaining reading up on how employees are fighting and bragging about their jobs that are expandable.

Bankers in Nigeria understand this better.

Morotov1:

In Nigeria
6-7 years med school
1 year housemanship
1 year youth service
4-8 years residency
6months to 1 year post residency before confirmation.
That is roughly 16 years on the average if you do not fail any exams, but can get to 20-22 years if not so lucky.
