A sane professional, like the ones we have in the UK, would think about patient care and start exploring how to collate the errors, do some root-cause analysis and then talk about solving the problem.

But this person of Nigeria says "Fck you, sue us if you want". grin grin grin grin grin grin

prettyprettywow: Consultants are paid fairly well compared to other health workers in Nigeria. that is the main reason why NMA does not want consultancy status for others. Unless you are saying that they deserve to be paid like US Drs. If you agree with that of the resident Drs, then let's introduce that into nigeria. Imagine resident Drs that are still under training going on strike. Only in Nigeria.

Nigeria's health system is structured different from the US. In the US, Docs generally can't practice until they have gone through a residency. Their first year in residency is regarded as their internship year.

Nigeria's system is fashioned after the British system. You only do 1 year of Internship (mini-residency if you may call it). For better delivery of healthcare and Doctor training in Nigeria, especially with how difficult it is to get into residency programs, I think our health system will benefit from maybe 2 years of post graduate training for all Nigerian Docs. However, that is not the current issue at hand.

The fact that a Doc hasn't gone through a residency or has not become a specialist in Nigeria does not in any way diminish his responsibilities when he works in the capacity of a Doc. Specialists have responsibilities in a specialized field and the non-specialists have responsibilities in a general field. Therefore, they should be remunerated for their efforts.

There are other problems in the Nigerian health sectors. For example, lack of facilities for training as well as healthcare delivery makes Specialists work in the most rudimentary way, thereby blurring the lines between specialists and non-specialists.

Bottom line, the Nigerian health system is in pieces, but unfortunately, all these bickering and competition with Docs will continue to make things worse.

prettyprettywow: In US, all Drs specialize. Even the family physician (who are primary healthcare providers) is still an area of specialty. they still undergo residency You are not a fully qualified Dr until you are matched and done your residency which makes you a specialist!
. you have just shown how ignorant you are. and please shut ur stinking mouth.... Any MBBS holder is a fully qualified doctor and is capable of practising unsupervised and carry out all treatments( including surgeries) withing the limits of his skills In this country and in any other country where he/ she has passed their board certifying exam. Going further to do residency and become a specialist. is a post graduate qualification n if the person desires to go deeper into a clinical specialty.....when next u open or gory mouth to talk. check your facts.

A relative was released from a German hospital on Friday. The hospital management gave us an evaluation sheet to rank the staff, doctors and nurses, cleanliness, friendliness, treatment and so on and so forth. We were even asked to make suggestions as to what can be done better in the future. And all this even though we didn't pay anything except for the monthly insurance, which is quite cheap.

You are the one who has just spewed BS.

The fact that you have a MBBS allows you to practice in Nigeria but that does not give you the right to even qualify to take any board exams in many countries.

Board certification is not just about writing an exam, you have to spend time in the practice of that specialty before you qualify to write the exam.

What prettyprettywow stated was correct!!!

Well... you didn't pay much, but some other people did. All the other Germans that have money taken out of their salaries monthly.

That is how insurance works. Healthcare is not free or cheap.

Nigeria's system is dependent on the FG who are busy chopping the money that should go into Healthworkers salaries and proper healthcare delivery like you received in Germany.

Better soup, na money dey make am.

Where the FG has failed, maybe we will have success with privatization.

Some of u guys talk out of ignorance. In secondary school some of the guys agitating to be made above doctors never passed their o'level simply b/c they were too lazy to burn the midnight candle. They avoided the core science subjects b/c it is too difficult for them yet they would want to be called consultants & paid more than the doctors who passed through thick & thin to be where they are today.
In JAMB they never made it passed the cut-off mark hence their being relegated to lower courses which their lazy brain could cope with.
The fish-brained mother fu*ker who said doctors paid same fees as other students in other courses while in medical school never saw the four walls of the university.B/c if he did he or she should have known that medical & law students paid higher than other categories of students throughout their stay in the university. He or she should do a research about fees paid by various departments in the university in both private & public institutions here in Nairaland or google.Yes don't talk out of ignorance.Google is there 4 u.
In the university most of these agitators were busy throwing parties, beer parlors were their best friends, cultism was their hobby, while doctors were busy burning the midnight candle, fighting heard not to fail out of medical school. Now they want to reap where they did not sow.
The brainless child who was comparing resident doctors to student nurses fail to realize that resident doctors do more than 99% of work in hospitals in terms of patient caring.Student nurses do not have any responsibility to the patient. If not for his mediocre brain,he should have done better by comparing student nurses to medical students & not to fully qualified & employed resident doctors.
Pls anybody that wants to talk about doctors should do a thorough & comprehensive research & not to spew out half-baked gabbage to confuse Nairalanders & the general public.Don't distort information. If u don't know what to say,u shut ur mouth up.
I rest my case.

NMA starts at level 12 after NYSC, tell me any civil servant that starts at that? so what other relativity are we talking about? Until you start paying higher fees than others in school, then DO NOT TALK!!
thegeneral84:
Nobody is asking to be paid the same figures as the US Doctors. If I'm correct, NMA is more concerned about "relativity" than the actual salary figures. Once the salary is decent enough for the Nigerian setting, they are okay but they are insisting that the relativity in salaries must be maintained in the health sector. the NMA requests for being started @ a higher level, etc is aimed at restoring the relativity and not actually asking for salary increase. Believe me, if JOHESU accepts for their salaries to be reduced to restore relativity, NMA would be satisfied with their present salaries if such reduction restores relativity. But that cannot happen, so their only lee way is to ask for salary increase to restore back the relativity

Although, you did not do it yet, a lot of people seem to think that they are getting better service for cheap compared to Nigeria.

So, I was trying to stress that the good service was in fact not cheap, but the cost was shared by all Germans who pay for health insurance.

slyzy: Forget that thing! How many doctors have been sued in Nig in proportion to the number of pple they give permanent disabilty with injection we see limping about? What of those they kill with misdiagnosis? Have u not heard of cases that they forget some tool in a patient stomach after operation? An the chain continues... An average Nigerian will let go even if the doctor tries to deny unprofessionalism saying is the will of God. So, how many doctors are sued in Nig as u are trying to claim?
Just to correct this impression. I'm not trying to blame any field, but if ever an instrument is left inside a patient after surgery, it's the fault of the circulating Nurse. The Doctor concentrates on the surgery proper. Its the work of the circulating Nurse to ensure that the number of instruments at the beginning of the surgery is the same number at the end. When the surgery is done and the patient is to be closed up, the Nurse has to give them the go-ahead that all instruments are complete before they close up the patient. So if an instrument is left inside a patient, it's the circulating Nurse that made the mistake. In such situations, have you heard the Doctor say it's the Nurse's fault? He would accept the blame for the team because he is the "face" of the team

Of course the cost is shared by all working people in Germany. This is what makes it cheap and affordable for a single person. And yet, they will ask you if you are ok with the quality of a hospital.
