McLaren P1 (2013)

The McLaren P1 is proof that singular, eccentric visions are alive and well in the UK car industry. The ultimate supercar from a small, hyper-obsessive manufacturer, the P1 is a race-bred rocket with a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. Its 727hp, 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 meets a 176hp electric motor; the system’s 903hp total output spins the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With production limited to 375 cars, priced at a cool £866,000 (roughly $1.3 million) apiece, the P1 promises to achieve the mythic status of its vaunted predecessor, the 1992-98 McLaren F1. Morgan 3 Wheeler (2011)

The Morgan Motorcar Company has been in the same family’s ownership since 1909, when Harry Morgan promoted his three-wheeled Cyclecar. And it is in that spirit that the founder’s grandson, Charles Morgan, delivers the company’s newest model: an open-air, seat-of-the-pants anachronism that blows wind up the skirts of bloated exotics. The 1,200lb 3 Wheeler makes use of an 80hp, 2-litre V-twin motorcycle engine. The sprint from zero to 60mph happens in about 4.5 seconds, and the trike will hustle all the way to 115mph before the laws of terminal velocity intrude. (Martyn Goddard)

Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Limousine by Park Ward (1968-90)

You cannot get more quintessentially British than the Phantom VI, which debuted in 1968 and remained in the Rolls-Royce catalogue until 1990. Then as now, Rolls-Royce pursued nothing less than a rarified automotive ideal. The Phantom VI – silent, smooth, luxurious and exclusive – was all of that and more. The company produced only 374 of these grand giants, most of them clad in hand-crafted bodies from the London coachbuilder Mulliner Park Ward. Early examples employ a 6.2-litre V8; later models carried a 6.75-litre V8 producing upward of 250hp, but calculating horsepower was the buyer’s homework; disclosing exact engine output was beneath Rolls-Royce in those days. Thirty years ago, the $3,990 Yugo GV landed on the shores of the United States of America. The GV stood for “Good Value,” a marketing sentiment so nakedly brazen, so rich in the damnation of faint praise, that the car could not help but fail to clear even that low hurdle.

We’d had the Gremlin, the Pinto, and the Vega before — truly awful cars that had aspired to roadworthiness — but the idea of building a car on a chassis made of value proposition was a new and compelling one. Everyone should to have an inexpensive and economical means of personal transportation, said the optimistic-’80s zeitgeist, and entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin set about to give Americans their due.

The drunken passenger can be the bane of an Uber driver's existence — but serving the over-served is one of the ride-sharing company's core revenue drivers. The solution to potential conflicts, some hope, could be child’s play.

In the back of Uber cars in Charlotte, North Carolina, passengers may find something unusual: a multicoloured electronic toy called the Bop It! For those who have not been nine years old in the current millennium, Bop It! is an oddly shaped plastic contraption that barks out commands to “Bop it,” “Twist it” and “Pull it,” and awards points as various buttons and knobs are bopped, twisted, and pulled. (Made by US toymaker Hasbro, the Bop It! is powered by a 4.5-volt AA electric drivetrain, delivering 162 foot-pounds of dork.) It is upon the inebriated irresistibleness of this toy that the king of disruptive unicorns now hangs its hopes.

Joe Sullivan, Uber’s chief security officer, writes on the company’s blog that the goal is to prevent inebriated passengers from distracting their drivers. One presumes his definition of “distraction” includes assault, since there have been several documented cases of drunken passengers deciding to bop Uber contract workers, including one particularly ugly incident in California last November. A note to Mr Sullivan: Though the original 1996 version has the retro design that Millennial passengers will find most appealing, its elongated shape may encourage its use as a bludgeon.

Wheels of change

According to the Earth Policy Institute, a US-based environmental advocacy group, bicycle production quadrupled between 1950 and 2007. During the same period, car production merely doubled. It's a trend that continues to this day, accelerated by rising fuel prices and urban congestion. And during the last 10 years, the bicycle has enjoyed something of a renaissance, thanks to ever-greater availability of lightweight materials, advanced safety and comfort features, and electric-motor-assist systems.Bicycles are becoming more beautiful, too. Small manufacturers, custom shops and independent designers are reinventing the humble two-wheeler with cutting-edge shapes and technologies. Herewith, we pick 10 of our favourites. BSG Wood.b Duomatic

**Country of origin:** France

**Details:** French bikemaker BSG’s Wood.b line of cycles combine metal pieces with structural components made of exposed ash plywood. The finished product – which is every bit as pricey as it looks – seems closer to art than machinery. Don't be fooled: BSG’s frame promises exceptional durability, and the use of painted aluminium components keeps weight to a manageable 35lbs. This beauty is a beast.

**Price:** €3190 (about $4230)

Pashley Parabike

**Country of origin:** UK

**Details:** Bikemaker Pashley, which has been in business since the days of King George V, is known for its classically styled, eminently English cycles – bikes with Brooks sprung saddles and ding-dong bells and big wicker baskets. Pashley's new Parabike mines British history, as well, albeit a less genteel chapter of it. The cycle recalls a WWII-era two-wheeler called the Airborne bicycle, which was carried into occupied France by British paratroopers. Pashley's version, while not designed with skydiving in mind (the original featured a folding frame that strapped to the 'trooper's body), is a classic in its own right, with a bowed multi-tube frame that is at once nostalgic and forward-thinking.

**Price:** £545 (about $900)

Re: Facts About Cars by CarXus: 7:25pm On Feb 04, 2016
Vanmoof S Series

**Country of origin:** Netherlands

**Details:** Amsterdam's Vanmoof has been colonising the gallery districts of major world capitals since 2009, winning aesthetes over with its bikes' Tinker Toy-like forms, tough materials and emphatically Dutch brand of sprezzatura. The S Series commuter bike builds on the no-frills original cycle without cluttering up the works. An eight-speed Shimano internal hub helps a rider handle hills, while disc brakes provide the stopping power of far more sophisticated – and far pricier – road bikes.

**Price:** $1,048 (S3 model, 28in wheel)

Re: Facts About Cars by CarXus: 8:08pm On Feb 04, 2016
Donky Bike

**Country of origin:** UK

**Details:** The Donky Bike is a nontraditional beauty, to be sure, a bike that prioritises strength, simplicity and urban maneuverability over sensual lines or luxurious trappings. The cycle – which was nominated for a Design of the Year award by London's Design Museum – is BMX-inspired, with tough 20in wheels and a stocky frame bisected by a load-bearing steel beam, upon which are mounted front and rear cargo racks. It's a devoted hauler, but unlike traditional cargo bikes, which can stretch 8 feet or more end to end, the Donky is compact enough to park in the front hallway of a typical city flat.

**Price:** £499 (about $830)

Re: Facts About Cars by CarXus: 8:29pm On Feb 04, 2016
Viks Steel Urban Cycle

**Country of origin:** Estonia

**Details:** It was just a matter of time. Given single-speed cyclists' pathological fixation with minimalism, Estonia's Velonia – a boutique studio founded and manned by Indrek Narusk – has lopped off the seat tube right where it stood. The resulting bicycle, the Viks, is a noodly abstraction fashioned from just two steel tubes, joined at the head tube below the handlebar. Shown above in "Lamborghini Orange" powdercoat, a Viks can be configured for either fixed or freewheel riding, although Narusk cautions that handlebar-mounted brakes are a tricky fit, given the bar's unusual 30mm diameter. Best to go brakeless, in other words.

**Price:** Contingent on build specification.

GreenChamp Original

**Country of origin:** Singapore

**Details:** Youth, said George Bernard Shaw, is wasted on the young. So is this simply beautiful bamboo balance bike, made by Kickstarter-funded GreenChamp. For the uninitiated, a balance bike is a pedal-less two-wheeler intended to teach riding skills more effectively than that traditional staple of childhood, the tricycle. Beyond such worthy considerations as sustainability and carbon footprint, the GreenChamp Original is a triumph of design. Bamboo fibres are infused with honey (yes, honey) to prevent cracking, and the tubes feature dual-wall construction for maximal rigidity. To be young again...

**Price:** $165

Cherubim HummingBird

**Country of origin:** Japan

**Details:** Supplier to the Japanese national cycling team at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Cherubim has pride and provenance to spare. Its legacy of steel-frame sculpture is now carried forward by Shinichi Konno, son of company founder Hitoshi Konno. With a taste for retro-tinged velodrome machines that take daring detours – the HummingBird build above forgoes a traditional seat tube and arches its back precariously over the rear wheel – it is safe to assume Shinichi-san is not eyeing Olympic glory. He must content himself knowing that he builds what are widely regarded as the most beautiful bikes in the world.

Lamborghini’s new Huracan Spyder might have its vices, but that won’t stop it shooting to the top of many people’s wanted lists

Cruising through the South Beach area of Miami in an open-top Lamborghini, it’s impossible not to become a cliché. The sunglasses are on, the jacket sleeves rolled up; in my head, Jan Hammer’s laying down some heavy synth chords, and I’m on my way to bust a cartel of vicious drug runners wide open.

I should really be driving a white Ferrari Testarossa, but the Huracan LP610-4 Spyder I’m actually in is a perfectly good substitute – and judging by the amount of attention it’s getting, the fact it’s a “baby” Lambo is causing it no problems.

The Spyder is the third model to join the Lamborghini Huracan range, hot on the heels of the LP610-4 and LP580-2 coupés, and as its name suggests, it shares an engine with the former; a 5.2-litre V10 that’ll see it to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 201mph. More than enough to hold its own in a car chase, then.

With an official fuel economy figure of almost 150mpg, and the ability to run on electric power for up to 25 miles, the BMW 330e is an intriguing proposition

You only need try an electric toothbrush (preferably your own) to appreciate how battery power can take the effort out of an everyday chore. The latest versions are so advanced that they come with a three-figure price and enough brush heads, speeds and sensitivity settings to cater for all dental needs, whether it’s massaging gums or excavating those gaps at the back where sweetcorn gets stuck.

If you were to consider upcoming environmental legislation as the awkward kernel on the cob that is the automotive industry (and you should), then the petrol-electric plug-in hybrid is the Oral B Ultrasonic that promises to sort it out.

The original XF was the car that saved Jaguar, but the new version of this big executive saloon is far more sophisticated

The Jaguar XF is an executive saloon designed to compete with the BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-class and Audi A6. It’s a crucial car for Jaguar, too; the original version of 2007 was responsible for injecting much needed appeal into the brand.

How to buy car online

The list of cars made in your country seems dull to you. You want to have an off-shore transaction to jazz up your life. The only way is to take recourse to online buying. All foreign companies do have the provision of online buying. Moreover there are other service organizations that provide you a list of what is available in that country according to your demand. If you are a resident of say Nigeria or any other part of the world, auctionexport can guide you in selecting your car.

Most of the online buyers get puzzled as they can not decide which car to select. While selecting a car for your use, ask yourself a few questions like, what type of car you want to buy, where will you drive the car most, how much will you be able to spend on your car, what other features your car must have. Added to these things, keep in mind about the price range, insurance, shipping and other legal matters. Do proper research about the cars.

Considering all these facts proceed with the idea of online purchase. Do not regret the fact that you are not getting the feeling of your new car physically. Neither you are able to go for a test drive. While you are buying a new car from US showroom, you do not have to worry about its performance. But arrange for the rest of the things to move the car from the showroom to the door of your house. Go through the rules and regulations.

The Lexus RC forgoes diesel power in favour of the refinement and low running costs of a petrol-electric hybrid system

The Lexus RC is a sharply styled four-seater coupe, available as a petrol-electric hybrid or with a turbocharged petrol engine.

In a segment that also includes the BMW 4-series and Audi A5, the RC could be interesting to company car drivers in particular, who if already hybrid converts now have the option of a sleek coupe, or if already coupe buyers can now take advantage of the tax savings associated with a hybrid.

There's plenty of British interest in the new premium hatchback from Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan - not least because it's built at the parent company's factory in Sunderland

What a difference seven years makes. In 2009, Infiniti opened its first dealership in Reading and filled it within strange-looking cars with V6 and V8 petrol engines and hideous glistening cherry wood veneers.

Fast-forward to 2015 and we have the Q30, a large, good-looking hatchback with a raised ride height, on offer with two diesel engines as well as two petrol units, and a choice of sober interior trim levels.

Designed in Nissan's Paddington studio in London, engineered in Cranfield and manufactured in Sunderland, has Infiniti finally built a car suited to British tastes?

The Land Rover Defender has emerged from the company's Solihull factory for 68 years, which means that in car years, it roughly predates the invention of the wheel. But like the wheel, the Defender has aged remarkably well (better than, say, singer Steven Tyler, also born in 1948). The proto-Landie has aged so well, in fact, that many people with passionate opinions on the subject and a willingness to share those opinions in public (car writers, that is) have wondered aloud, and often, why the Defender couldn't slog on for another 68 years in its present form — maybe with a better radio. Well, it couldn't, for a variety of legitimate reasons — safety standards, emissions standards, the usual. That's the bad news. The good news (we hope) is that Land Rover has promised to deliver a new, kinder, gentler Defender. With a better radio. Eventually.

The Fiat 600 Jolly was the ultimate getabout, a surrey-topped beach car made for tooling around Mediterranean port towns while your yacht was being replenished with caviar. Aristotle Onassis had one. So did Grace Kelly, Mae West, and Yul Brynner. But unless you currently own one of these treasures from the late 1950s — and only an estimated 70 of the Ghia-styled cars still exist — you’re out of luck.

The Batmobile built for the television show of the 1960s was originally a 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura modified by Hollywood customiser George Barris. The latest Batmobile, the Tumbler of the Dark Knight trilogy, was built at an estimated cost of $250,000, and was powered by a 5.7-litre Chevrolet V8 engine with 400 horsepower under its carbon fiber and fibreglass body. Even with rear wheels measuring a comical 37in, the Tumbler could move from zero to 60mph in five seconds, according to its builders.

For the Knight Rider show, which originally aired on US television in the ‘80s, KITT –Knight Industries Two Thousand – was a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am originally designed for the show by Michael Scheffe. KITT could turbo-boost its way out of dangerous situations, jump over obstacles, drive autonomously and, of course, carry on a conversation. KITT was powered by a 5-litre V8 engine mounted behind its famous red scanner.

American classics

Some of the most famous on-screen machines come not from alternate dimensions or the future end of days, but from the past. Matt Wasserman listed the 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe and 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air in George Lucas's 1973 film, American Graffiti, as two of his top choices. Driven by actors Paul Le Mat and Harrison Ford, respectively, these cars have taken their place as two of the most iconic vehicles in US film history evoking an era of hot-rod street racing.

Like it or not, the driverless car is coming. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Mercedes-Benz reported that its new E-Class sedan had earned a Nevada Autonomous Driver's License — the first production car to do so. At the same show, upstart electric-car maker Faraday Future announced (as it unveiled its autonomous FFZERO1 race car concept) that its future production models would be pre-wired to receive driverless technologies as they emerged, and Kia pulled the wraps off an entire sub-brand, called Drive Wise, devoted to driverless cars.

So as we contemplate a driverless future, and examine the ways autonomous vehicles will revise our thinking about everything from the insurance industry to law-enforcement practices, it can be enlightening to consider the end-user changes, as well. Children of the driverless generation will let go of more than just the go-turn-stop skills required to operate a motor vehicle, they will lose many of the attitudes, interactions and cultural norms — the good and the less good — that accompany manual control of a car.
