This may come as a shock to a lot of people but having a television in your bedroom may just be the reason you and your significant other seem to be drifting apart- at least, that’s what research says.

An Italian study conducted showed that over 500 couples who had televisions in the bedroom were having trouble with their sex lives and we all know that a young couple without an active sex life is heading for doom.

While sex is important in a marriage, it is not the only basis for getting the TV out of your bedroom. Here are 5 reasons to consider.

- Catch Up
With the TV in your bedroom, a couple can ignore each other for several hours before sleep eventually gets the better of them. So time spent spent catching up with each other is spent passively watching TV causing the couple to slowly but surely drift apart.

- Intimacy
With the TV in the room, sex may become less and less important to you. This may not happen immediately, but after a couple of years of having a room television set, you begin to spend less time with each other and more time in a world of make belive.

- Insomnia
Having your TV in your bedroom will almost always lead to insomnia. If you are an addict like most of us are, your TV comes on the moment you walk into the bedroom... Then you have time to catch up on all the series and movies you may have missed during the day thanks to DStv’s Catch Up feature on the Explora. You find yourself up till very late in the night and often times dozing off with the TV is still on. This leads to a lack of proper rest and grumpy mornings, which may affect put a slight strain on the other spouse.

- Health Risks
Apart from the other health issues attached to insomnia, watching too much television could have a negative effect on your eyesight not to talk of the constant urge to snack while sitting in front of a television which could easily lead to obesity.

- Less Exercise
The latest research, published in the April issue of the journal "Pediatrics", shows that having a bedroom television not only leads to more TV viewing, but also results in less time exercising, lower fruit and vegetable intake and more sweetened beverage consumption which is generally bad for the for the health. And if it is bad for your health, it is certainly bad for your marriage.

If you are one of those couples who already have a TV in your bedroom, taking it out all together maybe too drastic but you can try a fun experiment by moving the TV out of your room for a month, and find that you may never have the urge to take it back.
