What you can do to improve fuel efficiency
- Keep your tires inflated to the recommended pressure and check them periodically. Your local Go Tire professional can help you determine the proper levels for your tires and vehicle.
- Allow your engine to warm up a bit by driving gently.
- Most cars’ fuel efficiency peaks between 35-60 mph or 56.3 -96.6 kph. Above 60 mph or 96.6 kph, fuel efficiency drops significantly.
- Keep your vehicle in shape with regularly scheduled maintenance.

Good for a common ‘curb’ parking problem. When parallel parking, there’s nothing worse than the sound of your wheel scraping against the curb as a result of misjudging the distance between your car and the sidewalk.
The aptly-dubbed Smart Rim wireless sensor system uses advanced technology to automatically detect unsighted obstacles along the side of car as the wheels near the curb.

Check Engine Air Filter

You should check your air filter at every single oil change. You likely won’t need to change it every time, but you should always remove it and inspect it for tears, leaking, excessive water or oil, or other signs of damage. If you find excessive wear, tear, or dirt build-up, swap in a new air filter.

Know The Telltale Signs That Your Air Conditioner Is Beginning To Fail You

Though you might not be a skilled auto technician, you should at least know some of the telltale signs that your air conditioner is beginning to give out on you. If you hear a whirring sound as your air conditioner runs, it might be the sign that the belt is losing tension, which will cause it to eventually break down and not blow cold air anymore. Further, if you notice refrigerant leaking or staining components of the air conditioner, it is a sign that the system is on its last leg. Paying attention to some of these signs will let you know whether you need a repair.

Engine Light On? Fix It to Save Money on Car Maintenance
A lit check engine light can be scary for some automobile drivers and owners. Some drivers automatically think that their engine is no good when they see the light. Other drivers feel prompted to take their vehicles to the nearest repair shop. A check engine light can be on for a wide variety of reasons. The vehicle owner may be able to fix the problem without involving a professional mechanic. The following contains some information on common check engine light causes and how an ordinary vehicle owner can fix the issue by performing the repair.

Gas Cap Issues
One of the simplest and most common reasons that automobile owners see a check engine light is the gas cap. Sometimes, the light comes on because the gas cap is not tight enough. Other times, the light comes on because the gas cap is damaged in some manner, which may cause an air leak. The automobile owner may be able to fix this problem by simply unscrewing and rescrewing the gas cap. In the worst cases, the person may have to purchase a new gas gap. Gas caps are fairly inexpensive. They range from $5 to $20 at the local auto parts store.

Spark Plugs and Wires
Spark Plugs and wires may cause the check engine light to come on if they are due for replacement. Poor spark plug wires could easily cause a bad air/fuel mixture that could set the check engine light off. A consumer should change the spark plugs and wires every 15,000 to 20,000 miles for good measure. Self-installation can be easy if the person has a firing diagram to go by. The cost of spark plugs and wires is generally low. A vehicle owner can find a spark plug and wire kit for approximately $50.

Ignition Coil
The ignition coil or coil packs could send the check engine light on a frenzy. A bad ignition coil will make the vehicle run as if it has no power, as well. Self-installation can be easy depending on the vehicle type. A 2005 Monte Carlo coil pack costs approximately $35. The installation job takes less than 10 minutes because the person can see everything. Different vehicles will vary in job difficulty according to their setup.

O2 Sensor
An o2 sensor is responsible for more than 40 percent of all check engine light blinks. The o2 sensor is a small electronic device that controls the air gas ratio. The sensor sends signals that are responsible for the amount of fuel that gets to the engine. A broken O2 sensor will not send the appropriate signals, and the engine will not receive the right amount of fuel. Some o2 sensors are in the exhaust pipe, and other are in different locations. The ease of the job depends on where the manufacturer placed the sensor. The cost of an o2 sensor can be as low as $20 or as high as several hundred dollars.

Bad Catalytic Convertor
A check engine light may come on because of a bad catalytic convertor. The catalytic convertor is the part of the exhaust system that keeps the air clean. Replacing the catalytic converter will be difficult for a consumer who cannot raise the car up over his or her head. A new catalytic converter can cost several hundred dollars. A junkyard may carry a catalytic converter for only a fraction of the cost. Most junkyards offer a return policy of some kind to people who purchase non-working parts.

The check engine light should not cause immediate alarm. The vehicle owner’s responsibility is to check for obvious issues first. The gas cap is the easiest part of the system to check, so the person will want to check that first. The driver can then use the elimination process to find out the root of the problem.

There is no definite answer as to when you should get your oil changed as it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and varies because of the road and driving conditions.
When oil goes into the car at first, it is almost colorless but when it has been in the car for a while, it becomes a dark colour. This is because as you drive your vehicle, the oil gathers dust, small particles and metal pieces. Oil is needed in a vehicle’s engine to keep the various parts lubricated, but when this oil is dirty it ceases to perform this function.

Tips to Extend Your Car Battery’s Life

Keep the battery terminals clean and have them inspected regularly for corrosion.

Start the car before operating accessories and drive it to allow the battery to get topped off by your vehicle’s alternator, which produces electricity and charges the battery after voltage drops.

Be sure that the battery is secure and free from vibration. Batteries that shake can be damaged, short circuit and harm your vehicle.

Insulate the battery from extreme temperature changes with a battery insulation kit, which typically comes with new cars. If you purchase a kit separately, you can find replacements specifically made to fit your car’s battery compartment. The sleeves are typically made of plastic or an acid and thermal resistant material.

Purchase a car battery charger that will maintain an optimum charge level when your car is not in use or when you are out of town.

Regularly check your car battery’s water level indicator, which will alert you when your battery needs more water. Be sure to use distilled water.

Avoid frequent short trips in the car.

Be sure that the CCA rating of your battery is either equal to or greater than your car’s CCA rating.

Consult your owner’s manual if you plan to disconnect your battery from your car. In most cases, you’ll need to disconnect the negative cable first and then the positive cable. When you reconnect the battery, use the reverse order. Failing to follow this procedure can damage your fuses. Also, do not keep your keys in the ignition when connecting or disconnecting the battery.

Do not overcharge your battery. Lead-acid batteries that overcharge can release potentially explosive oxygen and hydrogen gases. And it also leads to decomposition of the water in the battery, causing it to prematurely age.

Never try to open a sealed lead acid battery. It will damage your battery and very likely cause bodily harm. Batteries contain dangerous chemicals and heavy metals and create explosive gases while charging. Prior to handling your car’s battery, open the hood and allow time for ventilation.
