MaziOmenuko: Why do our police men walk around with assault rifles?

In most advanced countries, you hardly see policemen with assault rifles walking around the streets. They have their pistols inside a holster and only bring it out when its needed. You only see them with assault rifles (AK 47, etc) in times of emergency like riots, robbery, siege etc.

Here in Nigeria, you see our police walking into public transport, beer palour and shekpe joints with fully loaded ak47 rifles. It seems ak 47 is the default primary weapon for the police. Gone are the days when police men walk the streets with just a barton. Invite them for as security in a social program such as wedding, child-dedication or even a kid's birthday party and you see them with that annoying long gun on full display!

I think the government should do something about this. We hear cases of trigger happy policemen shooting innocent victims and claiming accidental discharge. If they are made to carry pistols alone, there won't be such incidences as it will require the policeman to bring the gun out from its holster, remove it from safety before shooting. Such scenarios will never be termed 'Accidental' discharge but first degree murder.

The pix below is for clarity sake. It explains a lot why the popular NPF acronym has been turned to a popular saying: Not People's Friend

You are right OP but u need to knw that there are some things that are not obtainable in this part of the country. In america a police can just say freeze and the robber surrenders, thats not the case in naija. I Believe naija will get that stage, our men just need orientation. Its Just like say every one should legally have a weapon in nigeria - its gonna be massacre.
Re: Nigerian Police And Assault Rifles by Donkaz(m): 8:04am On Jul 28, 2014
Is not their fault.

Wen you have people like bokoharam in your country, that is the only way out.

If they do as you suggested, before they would be able to remove the gun when neededd they would have received like 5 bullets.

Our threats are bigger and so you will need a big stick to deal with it.

If you move,i shoot you guns is normal here. I feel very uncomfortable though when i see them carrying it. Incase of attack they still find it hard to protect themselves and most of their guns are faulty, celotape everywhere.

*Cos the NPF thinks a rifle is the only thing Nigerians can obey.
*Cos no state commissioner is telling them that you only confront hardend criminals with rifles & not walk among harmless citizens with a loaded gun!
*because the NPF ll say they wanna be at alert when called upon!
And so many reasons!
Last Bullet
The sad part is when they accidentally shoot & cause casualty, they ll say it's spiritual.

ichidodo: A sheer apparent lack of sophistication and just plain cluelessness at the security risk they pose themselves and to the public as a martial arts expert what is stopping me from reverse twisting their rifle hand simultaneously delivering a hammer fist knockout blow to the temple before making away with one of the most powerful shooter (rifle) in the world??...They should count themselves lucky that Nigerians are predominantly peaceful people.Make dem go Jamaica go try that nonsense....

cluelessness a word used by every tom, dick n harry in GEJs administration even when its not appropriate. This is Nigeria and not America, remember that in America initially police dont use assault rifle something led to that.
Re: Nigerian Police And Assault Rifles by imotal(m): 8:28am On Jul 28, 2014
People, what are we saying? First of all, America is organised in such a way that if the normal police who handle investigations and low level police work including patrol (with the pistols) cannot control a situation, the SWAT is called in(the heat these guys pack, you'll think they are fighting a war). In Nigeria, we do not have such major divisions. A typical Nigerian police can be on patrol today and tomorrow be assigned to the antibomb squad. Due to the scarcity of weapons, and added to the fact that the ak47 is an efficient weapon both in terms of accuracy and firepower(it carries 32 rounds per clip), it serves a very efficient role and thus is the weapon of choice for the Nigerian police.

when I was in my hometown during the summer, in Uyo at central business district, I went to first bank for money transfer reasons, when I came back I saw a group of policemen in a squad car threatening to shoot me because I didn't greet them, I simple asked him if it is even loaded and that its not by force to greet, Nigerian police are very stupid, if I was a threat they wouldn't know how to deal with me.

The police recently stormed my street to arrest a lady who stocked fuel at home with the sole aim of selling to consumers.
we recorded up to 50 police rifles that very day, why?

Real theives get away with robbery but our police force prefers to expend all energies on harmless civilians
this woman could have been arrested by just 2 police men.

The landlord of the house parted with 300,000 naira to get out of the mess.
God knows the fate of the woman.

I was just having this conversation with a friend a couple of days ago. I wonder why our policemen can't just carry small side-arms? Every where you turn, it is long rifles everywhere. Is it like a new police policy? Just so primitive in my opinion.
Re: Nigerian Police And Assault Rifles by uzomahowualah(m): 9:20am On Jul 28, 2014
Policing goes beyond guns. You have communication gadgets, stun guns, undercover patrols, uniformed patrols, protective wears, computerised mappings, patrol vehicles with on board computers, with mappings,GPRS,trackers, that can I'd people and all that. But most of all intelligence gethering which ends a crime before it even begins. Then talk of Having a specialised hit squad that are so well trained and equipped to handle violent crimes.

I beg to disagree sir. Even in Nigeria we have SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad), we have MOPOL (Mobile Police), both of which are different from the regular cops in black-on-black. Even SARS and Mopol can move around with their high-caliber arms stcked away from view in their patrol vehicles until it is needed. SWAT teams don't move around with rifles in full view. There should be some level of discreet in policing.

The Nigerian police should try investing more in bullet-proof vests than all this assault rifles.

Are policemen in SW,SE and SS also scared of being attacked by BokoHaram....
Come to Ondo, Ekiti, and other peaceful States like that, you see the officers Carrying, Sleeping,Waking up,Bathing, Eating, and Drinking with the rusted, heavy, and disgusting looking AKs...Most times one finds it difficult to diffentiate between them and touts, corrupt and shallow thinking illiterates....

Nice post but the Nigerian police should not be given any weapon at all because they use them to threaten and intimidate, instead of using them to protect citizens and discourage criminals.
Re: Nigerian Police And Assault Rifles by Nobody: 9:42am On Jul 28, 2014
Why do the Police carry AK's?

Because AK's are cheap, they last long.,and can be used in any weather.

Another problem is that a good police gun costs a lot of money. For example., a Sig Sauer P227 (apologies....I love Sigs wink ) costs $1085. (Note...Sigs are favoured by many Police forces around the world). Meanwhile a AK47 (Chinese type....most AK's around are made in China....on license from the Russian manufacturer) costs $320. You do the math....especially if you are in chargeof procurement for the Police.

And I betcha most of the AK's were obtained in the 70's.....when we had the oil money....and when the Soviets could just hand you a batch in return for raw materials.(And don't be surprised they last that long. AK's were designed not only to last long but to work in any environment....and all for a cheap price).

I guess DICON should manufacture more pistols.....especially good ones like the Glock semis which behave better than an AK but at least can be carried as pistols. So far,DICON is just making the N1(an expy of the FN-FAL assault rifle).

Because good side arms cost far more than a second hand AK.
