myads890: I believe the American and EU governments have finally realised that any fund is sent Nigeria is looted by polithieves and never used for its main purpose. And probably also that Nigeria is capable of funding itself but the funds are always looted by corrupt and incompetent "leaders".

Nigeria shouldn't lament. We deserve everything that's coming to us

My thoughts exactly. If $20 billion can go missing from Nigeria's coffers then we don't need any darn aid. In fact, it is time to stop taking aid from western nations. Once you take their money, they will begin to dictate what and what shouldn't happen in your country. With all the aid African nations have received in the past, we are still in the same mess we have been in for the past 50 years. So please, USA should keep her aid because America never gives you anything for free. There is always a catch 22 involved.

Don't mind these foolish illiterates on nairaland. Iv said it before, just because you have a access to internet and can type dose not mean you are smart.. They think by being unpatriotic they are helping themselves, that is the biggest joke of the century...Anyway what do you expect from illiterates.

I really think the reason the US did this is simple and that is because of the Anti-gay right bill that was passed into law. Just recently the Ugandan supreme court judges just Legalised gay unions in Uganda. Ghana and Rwanda are indifferent about the issue. Its only Nigerians that have said no completely and when they did America threatened to withdraw some aids and place some sanctions..
Anyway my advice to GEJ is to see this as a blessing and not a curse because all these foreign aids are meant to make the Recipients puppets to the Donor.. Let's struggle to build our economy and forget the west, because they are evil. The more they give with one hand, the more they take with the other...

Wise man! Tell them!

What's bad about saying the truth as it is?

All the posters before you said the bitter truth. Should we be parting our leaders on the back when they are seriously messing up?

Is that how you live your life? Licking other people's asss so as not to hurt their feelings ?

Be a man and stand for the truth always no matter how difficult and hard it is. That is what defines a man!!

WE ARE IN THIS MESS BECAUSE WE HATE THE TRUTH. BECAUSE OF OUR COLLECTIVE DOCILITY.BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY (MENTAL, MORAL & PHYSICAL) TO CHALLENGE INJUSTICE AND IMMORALITY IN GOVERNMENT FOR WHATEVER REASON. ONLY THE TRUTH CAN SET US FREE. WE EITHER ACCEPT IT OR THE WHOLE WORLD WILL GET TIRED OF SUPPORTING LIES AND LEFT WITH NO OPTION THAN START CHANNELING THIER LIMITED RESOURCES AND ENERGY TO ONLY NATIONS THEY ARE REASONABLY SURE OF GETTING RESULTS AND NOT SWINDLED BY SHAMELESSLY VORACIOUS POLITICIANS.

You simply do not know how America's money is utilized.

America will never give any money to any country's politician, they would even try and corner their own share of the so-called loot under secret deals with those same politicians.

Those funds will be spent on military hardwares made entirely by American weapons manufacturing companies and supplied by American arms contractors.

The trainings are handled entirely by American contractors and where they require overseas training, officers and men will go to America for such.

More than 80% American monies will return back to them.

Those funds will never leave American financial institutions.

In the case of humanitarian courses, crumbs giving out are channeled through NGOs.

Educate yourself of these things, they are not hard to find.

Your just typing nonsense. My comment had nothing to do with feelings. Or licking ass.

It's all about facts. If the Americans see it fit to share defense funds with Uganda, ghana and Rwanda. ( countries with very questionable corrupt/shady governments and institutions)

Uganda- very corrupt. Government has history of abuse. Also history of using child soldiers.
Ghana- very corrupt and is a poster boy on how NOT to run your economy
Rwanda- though Rwanda has made great improvements economically Kagames government has also been very oppressive towards opposition and anyone who speaks ill of his government. Has played a role in assassinating journalists and opposition members in Rwanda and even outside the country.
Plus lets not forget rwanda and uganda have been caught assisting rebels who are destabilizing the congo.

So with all that What makes it right to skip Nigeria? Jonathan with all his faults is not as bad as the leaders of these countries.

nigeria is one of the worlds leading peace keeping nations and a country that does and has done a lot for Africa. So it's logical to work closely with such a country if one is looking to further peace in Africa.

Meen, l MUST commend you a lot!
You are one those very rare Nigerians that dont THINK ONLY in ONE DIMENSION! kiss kiss

That you "observed" the trend whereby some Nigerians are so quick to condemn their country and trash it, just to appear politically correct, is kudos to you.
First, there is nothing wrong in saying the truth,.... and no one will get any medal for stating that we have a corrupt, looting successive government.
Having said that, some things just dont add-up (l can remember our discussions on the refusal of Obama's America to allow the Zpulla drug, to be "tested" on a few confirmed cases of Ebola amongst Nigerians rather suggesting to us to go and build-up our STRUCTURES FIRST and as further "palliative", that he would rather support us in setting-up RAPID RESPONSE FORCE!).

Well, has he put his mouth, where his money is, now that the opportunity to "palliative" us has arisen? NO!!
And that should make any "thinking person" to understand that his statement back then was just a ruse, a tactics and complete deception!

Anyway, the bottom line is that we have to get our acts together, ....... very quickly!
Blaming "them", though correct ... will still not get us anywhere.
our salvation lies in our own hands.

Its not about financial aid. I now Nigeria does not need any foreign assistance. My point was that if america is going to use things like human rights violations as benchmarks on who to work with then overlooking Nigeria and giving funds to Uganda and Rwanda does not make sense.

At the end of the day I would much prefer Nigeria not only solves her problems on her own but stands as a vanguard for other African nations and works towards establishing peace on the continent.

In fact I'm so so so glad that you brought up the question in bold. While you may be right in some aspects as the ECOMOG being neutralised (it's not a secret anyway), you however got it wrong in other aspects. But like I said, your question is in itself the possible answer to the US' behaviour on this one, even though it may not be out rightly stated to be so. But the truth is that given the current state of affairs in our military where the soldiers are poorly kitted despite the trillions of naira budgeted in the military, Obama might just have known that the 110 million dollars will definitely not get to where it's intended. It has always been the modus operandi of our politicians to divert foreign aids and grants meant for Nigerians into few pockets.

patrickmuf: No offense but reading through your post, you kinda agreed with same people you tagged as brainless... Most of your write up is propaganda based...

My dear, how do you differentiate propaganda and truth. If it is propaganda, good. Maybe that is what we need now - countering the bad news to save our name, and what is wrong in doing that. Let me take you on a little ride, I want you to open your mind and forget what ever you believed. Just go and do a little research on how countries use propaganda, and the tools they use in their propaganda.

Do you know the story of USA and Vietnam war? It is acclaimed to be the worst military outing the American ventured. Over the years, they have been battling to wipe that sorry image and ugly history of theirs. Now check American movies and Best seller books, go and read or see the movies made over the years and notice how they always try to reconstruct the fact by project elements of gallant performance in Vietnam. You will see an actor making comments like " I fought in Vietnam and made my Country proud, if you give me another chance, I will do it again". These kind of comments and imagery are consistently repeated in movies and books from the 80s till date. They try to graft into the mind of the world that they are heroes and many people see them in that light. In same way, if they want to make the world see any other country in bad light, they use same tools to operate. If I ask you, what is your idea of how Iraq is, I bet you will see it in the views of CNN. same way, if you ask one from Germany how Nigeria is, you sure will know what will be in their minds.
There is nothing like fellowship in international politics. Every country wants to outshine the other and they use every arsenal to achieve that. Why is CNN and BBC focusing on outside world and not their home countries, what is their aim. They have to keep defining the world for the world. Everybody must believe that theirs is the best and their actions are justified.
So, call it what ever you like, fine. The truth is that we do not understand the power of the media, in all the forms - music, movie, novels etc. we have been manipulated for so long that we do not own a mind of our own again, otherwise why would you be asking me such question, why
our people - even the educated class - been asking for support from every nation. We have lost it! We need to go back again and reconstruct our canons. Do you know why oyibos make cartoons like superman, spiderman etc for their little ones? those are the tools used to instil in them the spirit of being champions, of being patriotic and heroic. They grow up believing in them selves as heroes. on the contrary, we are continually bombarded with messages of how miserable we are, how the worst place to be born is Nigeria, how our life expectancy is 40 years. every time, one bad news or the other. That is psychological warfare. Now what is the effect - exactly what you are noticing in Nairaland now. You will read comments of souls infested with bitterness and hopelessness. you observe comments of people who have no single atom of patriotism in them.
My dear, no true child of a woman abandons his/her mother because she has epilepsy, or goes about telling her neighbors that her mother is useless, she can not cook well like other women. A word is enough for those who have brain to reason.
I have noticed that those who are quick to respond in criticizing Nigeria are those leaving abroad. Right now, I am studying abroad, and I know how many times I have engaged who ever into debates to defend Nigeria, and I have earned more respect than those who come here and behave like abandoned children. WE ARE AMONG THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD AND THE WORLD KNOW IT, THAT'S WHY THE WILL NEVER BE WILLING TO LET YOU DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTH. Thank God it is not for them to say, it is left for us to show.

Pause to think if the American leaders and politicians are not patriotic. They are and that is why things work there. This in turn motivates the citizens to love their country that is ready to take care of them and protect them.

But what do you have in Nigeria? Your leaders try everything possible to show that they care less about the citizens. So where is the motivation? Why are many of our soldiers absconding and abandoning their posts? Why has mutiny taken a seat next to our once respected, ECOMOG-strength armed forces? The answers to these are so obvious. Corruption! The trillions budgeted for equipment and weapons get channelled into few pockets.
