whitecat007: Maybe because we set the standard you all are measured by. You even started your comment with Yoruba word and then singled out an "Efo Riro" out of all other stews/soups here . Is it because you know the your now "Edikaikong" was not originally yours? Ikokore was even made recently, with some leaves tossed in it and wahla! It Was called something else.@bolded, GBAM! Edikaingkong got 2 goes from me and never bothered again after that. I agree some of those pics look nothing like Edikaingkong and exactly like Efo Riro. Wasn't going to say anything until I spotted your post. Well, lets leave the 'Ode To Edikaingkong' thread to the edinkaingkong lovers. |

Aitee1: If it is the fresh soft leafy pumpkin that you used then it's definitely not edikaikong that's normal vegetable soup that you cooked Thanks Then normal vegetable it is. I do not want dry pumpkin leaves. |

Re: Edikaikong - The King Of Nigerian Soups by ideepaul: 2:31pm On Aug 14, 2014 |
jmaine:Lemme tell you what I know. In Akwa ibom we have AFERE EKAEKA which is prepared with older pumpkin leave and water leaf just the same way AFERE NKONG is prepared, except that nkong needs the fresher pumpkin leaves...When it comes to EDIKANIKONG, you will still need the fresh vegetable and water leaf. The difference is that in EDIKANIKONG, the amount of water added is near Zero and oil is the main liqiud in there, even the meat has to be cooked till it absorbs all the water...it is abit more complex in cooking and very expenaive. unless u want me to cook the three types for you,I won't explain more than that Just humbly ask your granny or maybe if you have money,go to Le-meredian and ask them for edikanikong...what most guys eat in all this so-called calabar resturant is NKONG soup |

Re: Edikaikong - The King Of Nigerian Soups by jmaine: 3:10pm On Aug 14, 2014 |
ideepaul: Forget the long story abeg, It is practically the same thing . . . . Nkong, Ikong or Edikan Ikong is an expensive venture if you want to make it very palatable, cos it consumes a lot of ingredients to make it thirst unlike Afang i.e oil and crayfish. . . . Guy, my mum is Efik and I was also given the Efik treatment where there is no difference between a male and a female child in Kitchen affairs . . . All children irrespective of Gender are expected to be great cooks, so I know what am saying . . . What you have in most Calabar restaurants are poorly cooked Eferi Ikong or Edikan Ikong due to the cost people are willing to pay. A reason why the more powerful dishes of Edikan Ikong attracts premium prices. As a matter of rule, I don't eat Edikan Ikong soup in most low budget restaurants due to low quality . . . 1 Like |
