Even blatant fo.ols know this reduction has some political undertone..Doing this some months to election rings some suspicious bell that 'SIA' was seeking pyrric victory...we do not need to go through opposition party's propagandas package before we understand this..it's crystal clear!!

I got this from the facebook page of one of the students' groups in OOU (OOU Vanguard). I think it explains the reason for the protest.

Greatest OOUites!

The reduction announced by the Ogun State Government is not just an insult to SUG, it is an insult to the entire OOU Students. Even more insulting is the announcement that the reduction will begin to take effect next session.

What does this Governor take us for? Fools? In 2011, he made his campaign promises and told us he would effect a 50% reduction in school fees that will cut across all departments, but till tomorrow, we are still waiting for that 50% reduction. He won and effected less than that and it was a reduction that failed to cut across. So, he thinks we are stupid enough to wait till next session after 2015 election for him to begin the implementation?

Also, while negotiations were going on, the student representatives made it clear to the Government that we want OOU's case to be treated independently. We are not only calling for reduction in school fees; we are also calling for adequate funding and completion of the abandoned hostels. Treating all the tertiary institutions together is a deceitful ploy of the Government. How can schools that pay N70, 000 or N80, 000 be treated on the same pedestal with an OOU that pays over N200, 000? It is deceitful and evil and we will not stand for it.

OOU Students are not prepared to settle for anything more than N50, 000. OOU Students are not prepared to agree to an implementation that will not take effect from this session. OOU students are done playing the fool and are prepared to correct the insult that the Ogun state government has insulted us.

We are not oblivious of the fact that the only argument the state will resort to when faced in situations like these is that our agitations are being sponsored by 'opposition'. We expect the propaganda and will also be prepared to counter it. We are not politicians, our agitations are not political and our agitations are most definitely not sponsored by politicians.

We are prepared to cook beans and fry akara for Governor Amosun and nothing; not even the threat of arrest can stop us.

You guys don't get logic behind this, I think the Op is misleading everyone with the title of the topic.

The issue is that, before Amosun emerge as the governor of Ogun state then in 2011, he came to OOU mini campus campaigning that he is going to reduce the school fee by 50% but fortunately he slashed it by 10% and that was the end, the minimum amount a student pay in OOU is #102,000 for faculty of arts while maximum of 350,000 for medicine.

Before this time students have been agitating for the fee reduction. The school management are not helping the matter with their different policies which are on the bad side for the students.

Fast forward to 2014, consultation were on going between the Sug, school management and the government before the announcement of the reduction 2days ago which is to take effect from next session.
Ab initio, the students stand was that if the government is to reduce the fee, it is to take effect from this session because majority of the student haven't pay the exorbitant fee.

Last bullet
The student are protesting for the reduction to take effect from now, and that the maximum fee should be #50,000

use ur brain wen u talk....dis man promised reduction in fees as part of his manifesto in 2011, almost 4 urs now , hes just waking up to realised its time for reduction which is as a result of d aftermath of wat d political terrain looks like ahead of 2015 and to worsen d matter d reduction will take effect after d gubernatorial election nxt yr....d student only came out to tell him dey are aware of his stunt and dat dey are not gullible. ..so Mr its not a matter of been insatiable

They don't need to come out and tell him anything. Must people to the street and protest over everything? The way Nigerians go about protesting everything is making the whole thing look stupid. If you think what the man did is a ploy to get votes come 2015 and a sincere move, the right thing to do is not be constituting nuisance or fooling around in the name of protest. You still have the right to vote for whoever you like come 2015, so why not wait and allow your vote to do the protest at the right time instead of reducing protest to a child play? And to think that these people who are obviously lacking ideas are undergraduates is disappointing.

What university did you go to and what have you achieved with your Life? The National Universsities Commission has consistently accredited all courses offered by OOU so I don't know where you got that preconceived stereotypic view of it being a mushroom university. If you were making success with the piece of paper you got from your "proper" university, you won't be on Nairaland commenting on a thread about a mushroom university. Please be guided!

Hear yourself, you said "one time"! Which school in Nigeria doesn't have cultism related problems? You Federal university goons don't realise that times have changed, the Labour market doesn't care what university you are from but what you can offer and what problems you can solve for their organisations. You all should sit down in father's house and think because you went to a Federal University, you will be offered a Job pronto.....you all are deluded!
