Come to think of it. Can the lack of increased power generation be really be linked to pipeline vandalisation? The turbines used for generating power uses gas and not oil. Oil and gas (liquified) don't flow in the same pipeline. So far, the majority of the vandalised pipelines are oil pipelines (not gas). While there may have been a few gas line vandalised, I think this "mass" gas line vandalisation is more of a face saving hoax to accuse the opposition. Yes you can say there is gas shortage as most of the oil companies still flare a substantial amount of gas (even though they are working round the clock to increase gas supply) -so gas production has not reached its peak in Nigeria. But of course that apc needs to be blamed for the non performance of the clueless gov. |

A single episode of gas pipeline sabotage is capable of sending power shockwave across states while the numerous crude oil bunking won't be felt by all except the oil coys. So when you say a "few" gas pipeline sabotage occurred, it defeats the whole essence of your post. And your "few" didn't even cater for the overall number and frequency of the event. 2 Likes |

This thread is one of the most stupefying thread yet on Nairaland, classic case of doublethink. On one side Obiageli is happy at the improvement, on the other hand she's angry power has improved. Only in Nigeria will you have an opposition whose sole intent is the destruction and obfuscation of truth. Never mind the improvements, lets just go tangential to confuse our naive audience, big big fail. Power improvement has come to stay no matter how cavalier the APC lackeys would want us to believe. 4 Likes |

gists: . While there may have been a few gas line vandalised, I think this "mass" gas line vandalisation is more of a face saving hoax to accuse the opposition. Ex-militants claim responsibility for pipeline vandalisation March 15, 2013 By Sam Akadoro, Special Correspondent, Sapele Ex-militants of Niger Delta region, particularly those from Urhobo ethnic group, have claimed responsibility for the setting ablaze of major gas pipelines in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State. Authoritatively source informed that the action of the ex-militants was triggered as a result of non-documentation of members who yielded to the call of the federal to surrender their arms and weapons for the peace of the country. The members, in short a message, said the Federal Government Presidential Inter- Agency Task Force handling industries for the third phase amnesty programme, refused to document almost all the executive members and members of Urhobo extraction who made up of the third phase. The statement, conveyed by the group’s chairman, Chuku Ceey Gbegbedemie, read in part: “Sir, about 11.55pm last night in Delta State in Ughelli axis, location between Evwreni, Edjekota and Ewu, was exploded and still on fire till now. “This is just the beginning to crumble the economy. There must be proper documentation in third phase like Phase 1 and 2 and nobody should be left out. This is just the beginning of the war. “Sir, about 12 hours last night in Agbarha axis, Ughelli Delta State, the major oil and gas pipeline leading from Isoko, Agbarha down to Warri, has been shut and set ablaze and still on fire. “We will continue to destroy oil installation and oil companies in Delta State are advised to pack until we get our amnesty slots.” The group further threatens to blow up all pipelines carrying oil and gas to Escravos, Bonny, Kaduna and Lagos this week if President Goodluck Jonathan fails to call his men to order |

February 10, 2014 The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta said on Sunday that its fighters attacked two police gunboats at Peremabiri, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The group said the gunboats were escorting a former militant leader, Mr. Eris Paul, popularly known as Ogunboss. MEND said Ogunboss, other ex-militant leaders and their “ill-gotten property” had been penciled down for destruction. “They are now persona non grata in the creeks, and their lives and ill-gotten property have become legitimate targets for destruction.” The group, in a statement by its spokesman, Gbomo Jomo, said the attack that occurred on Saturday was carried out in a style reminiscent of the maiden operation of its campaign, Hurricane Exodus, that killed 15 policemen in the state on April, 2013. Police gunboats came under attack on Saturday by gunmen initially thought to be youths from the community and led to an exchange of gunfire that lasted over 30 minutes. But MEND after claiming responsibility for the incident in which two persons were feared killed, described Ogunboss and other ex-creek warlords as traitors. MEND said Ogunboss and other ex-militant leaders “now hiding in the cities, sold their birthright for contracts and political appointments to the detriment of a just cause. It said its action was predicated on the words of “our hero, the great Madiba, Nelson Mandela, who said, ‘No self-respecting freedom fighter would take orders from a government he is fighting against or jettison a long-time ally in the interest of pleasing an antagonist.” The group also said it was not yet freedom for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation which recently announced the completion of repairs on the Escravos-Lagos gas pipeline which MEND said it attacked by Hurricane Exodus. It asked Nigerians not to expect improvement in power supply through gas pipelines until the issues that led to militancy in the Niger Delta had been addressed. |

Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline As MEND Vows Fresh Attack 10 February 2014 , By Bassey Udo, Source: Premium Times (Photo: Vanguard) The restoration of supply on the pipeline would enable an equivalent of about 1,505 MW of electricity to be generated and injected into the national grid. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, on Sunday said normal gas supply through the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline System, ELPS, has been restored following the completion of repairs on the vandalized facility. Acting Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the Corporation, Omar Farouk, said the repairs would enable the re-injection of almost 200 million cubic feet per day, of gas into the national gas grid. Mr. Farouk said the reinstatement of normal supply of gas through the pipeline would boost the capacity of the NNPC and its partners to supply more gas for the generation of about 700 megawatts of electricity. The NNPC spokesperson said the repair works effectively ended almost seven months of interruption in gas supply as a result of sabotage by unknown persons in Delta State. On Sunday, the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, claimed responsibility for the attack, and warned that the completion of the repairs should not be celebrated, hinting at the possibility of another attack on the pipelines. "It is not yet uhuru for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, which has announced the completion of repairs on the Escravos-Lagos gas pipeline attacked by Hurricane Exodus," the group said in a statement signed by spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo. "Nigerians should not expect improvement in power availability through gas pipelines until the root issues that led to militancy in the Niger Delta have been addressed or discussed," it warned. The country's power generation capacity was significantly impacted negatively, as most power plants, which relied on gas generated from the region, were forced to cut down on their operations capacity. The successful repair of the ELPS means the NNPC would now be able to inject a total of about 430 mmcf/d of gas into the national gas grid for the generation of about 1,505 MW of electricity every day...... |

Obiagelli: To you guys, vandalisation of them pipelines is abstract, it's just an excuse govt gives for electricity being worse than usual. For some of us, it's real, sleepless nights, increased stress levels, less time with your family, the whole nine yards.See ehn, If the ELPS pipeline is vandalised the ripples are felt all the way in Ghana and it's not even just the Power sector that's affected. All this talk about improved power is subjective tbh*, that you have light for xx hours more than before cannot be proof of improvement as long as the guy in the next state(or even street) had light for xx hours less than before. Politicians (on all sides) need to stop with the fake and empty rhetoric and let the professionals do their job. *It's better to measure progress by the total quantum of power generated. |

Obiagelli: Really?link please! I wouldn't expect him to make such statements. It's the politicians that run their mouths, he isn't one AFAIK. Well we haven't had any incidents due to vandalism, thank goodness! Be that as it may, there have still been times where gas had to be rationed as recently as June. |
Re: Opinion: Increased Power Supply, Pipeline Vandalism And The Weather by gists: 5:34pm On Aug 30, 2014 |
jmaine:hmmm. I see. First I didn't say there aren't any. To the best of my knowledge NLNG (the chief client of the oil company when it comes to gas) is still able to substantially meet its contractual obligations as the oil coys somehow miraculously are able to get gas supplied to NLNG. It is only when it comes to supplying gas to ipps that apc come to the picture. So this kind of goes against your logic of "overall number and frequency". Also, private industries like PZ, flour mills, NB are able to get gas and generate power from gas supplied by the oil companies. The number of frequency of vandalisation does not affect these private industries, but somehow ipps are not because of some VERY FREQUENT vandalisation of gas lines right? Again by your logic, shell, mobil, total, chevron all send gas on a common gas line trunk to all the gas powered ipps abi? Such that one episode will take out the supply from ALL the oil coys to ALL the IPPs right (shockwave)? What a dumb company they must be APC must be blamed for all the evils in the country. Even where there is non, create an hoax problem and blame it on apc |
