spyder880: Oga Spyder, same method can be used for the ground floor? Or justuse 9inches blocks throughout the ground floor walls? Hajji M. |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by spyder880(m): 4:42pm On Dec 21, 2014 |
mufutau55: Because I needed wider beams and columns on the ground floors, I used only 9" blocks for the lower floors. 1 Like |

spyder880: Thank you Oga Spyder. That is the reason I also used 9" blocks on the lower level.. I am just trying to probe if I did the right thing. I am surely learning because I am the one giving the builder instructions of what I want. Thanks for the lecture. Hajji M. 1 Like |

Glory be to God for the journey so far, today marks my first comment on this spectacular platform of well to do bank of shared experience in the building industry engineered, inspired and coordinated by the "the league of extra-ordinary men" (Spyder, hajj mufutau , brabus, skimanski, Kkonsult). Indeed you guys have been a fountain in my soul and a chandelier of great illumination. Though I may be the youngest man in this forum(100L Architecture student) I have begun to develop a wealth of experience beyond reasonable dought(following you threats for the past 2 years). I will always reckon on you sir as my mentor everyday, every time and for everything within your capacity. Let's keep the ball bouncing Arc.Bulakos 1 Like |

bulakos: You are very welcome, actually we all look out for each other here and make comments for or against any practice we like or don't like. We are expecting to be hearing from you and maybe, one day, be working with you just like other great architects here online. Once again, welcome. |

spyder880: we had a big argument on the use of 6 inches walls as partition wall and no group was ready to drop their belief. I had to put a call to the architect that supervises my office building projects and put it on speaker. He told us 6inches are not loading bearing. He said it is structurally okay to use it as partition wall on the topmost floor as it is just bearing the roof . @Spyder, are u using marine boards for this project as it requires multiple floors? Is marine board really cost efficient? |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by Nobody: 8:41pm On Dec 22, 2014 |
Another thought just entered my head now. Did u use 6inches for the masters bedroom? There is this problem we had in one of the houses i lived sumtim ago. Each time oga and madam are in the room and on the bed, every other tenant gets to hear and record the movie. You dont just laugh at others cos as u are hearing theirs so they are hearing ur own. Most ppl resort to putting loud music , so anytime u hear loud music, know sum action is going on. No matter how u close ur window, d knacking sound will still escape. We got used to it but it isnt funny when you have a visitor. Now my question is , " what do u think causes the escape of sound? is it the blocks? do u think 6inchea block will give the same problem? |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by mufutau55(m): 10:11pm On Dec 22, 2014 |
mercylicious: That is because most of our houses in Nigeria is not soundproof, even if you use 9 inches solid blocks, sound will still escape. There various soundproof materials used to block out sounds... not just blocks, in my little opinion. Hajji M. 2 Likes |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by spyder880(m): 11:08pm On Dec 22, 2014 |
mercylicious: No we didn't use marine boards because this is not a large scale development, and we could not hire. I will explore the use of marine boards by next year. |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by spyder880(m): 11:12pm On Dec 22, 2014 |
mercylicious: I have never heard that complaint before. Maybe there is a problem elsewhere because hollow blocks are not supposed to pass sounds, this needs some experimenting with sounds in houses with such walls. |

spyder880: Oga Spyder, you are not kidding right? I have heard voices from other rooms in Nigeria where they use those blocks.. Especially when they are rocking bed during action as narrated in the earlier message. Over here they have many materials to soundproof rooms. Hajji M. |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by koman: 7:21am On Dec 23, 2014 |
There are some proven facts here: 1) We don't build with sound insulation materials here in Nigeria. 2) You can hear sounds and noise from your neighbours apartment or rooms that share the same wall. 3) The level or frequency of the sound/noise varies between walls. 4) What I have noticed is that the thickness of the block used is not the only determinant of the level of noise heard, i.e both 9" & 6" allows almost the same level of sound to escape the room. Rather the frequency or level of sound heard on the other side is determined by the thickness and ratio of mixture of the plastering done on the wall. So the higher the ratio of mixture and thickness of plastering, the less noise you hear. Oga spyder, you probably haven't got the complain because the ratio of your mixture and the thickness of your plastering are always right to keep the noise at minimum, not that our walls are sound proof. Good morning all. |

The wall formation at this top floor is an exact match with all the floors below. Door openings, kitchen walls and dining spaces are all the same in all the floors.

Why do u need this arrangement of reinforcement (6Y16) for the topmost floor column/beam. I was thinking 4y12 will be sufficiently ok spyder880: |
Re: The Port Harcourt Luxury Flats by spyder880(m): 11:49pm On Dec 23, 2014 |
Farm1: A tank base is planned for the top, so a section above the stairs will be decked. Also we might still do a parapet fascia on this house. |
