The Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and clearing agents operating at the airport may have lost an estimated N150 million between Wednesday and Friday as a result of the Customs and agents’ clash which led to the closure of the cargo terminal.

SHIPS & PORTS DAILY had reported on Wednesday that trouble started when the Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Tajudeen Olanrewaju was pelted with stone by the aggrieved clearing agents whom he had directed not to go near the bulk breaking section of the cargo terminal on his way to work.

The Customs Controller had following the development called for reinforcement from the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ who confronted the protesting agents.

Speaking with SHIPS & PORTS DAILY over the weekend, Chairman, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Airport Chapter, Alloy Igwe said both Customs and agents are losing an average of N50 million daily as a result of the closure of the cargo terminal.

He described as ‘critical’ the situation the agents are now facing with the closure of the cargo terminal at a period, which he said importation is usually on the increase.

“We are quantifying the revenue loss on a daily basis. The situation we are facing now is a critical one because the festive period is just around the corner when many Nigerians will be coming home most of them with personal belongings,” he said.

Igwe debunked claims that the attack on the Controller was carried out by clearing agents. According to him, no sane agent will throw stones or sachet water on a customs controller.

He said the attack was carried out by touts who took advantage of the porous gate to the terminal.

“If you know the terrain of the airport, you will know that the exit gate there is so porous that anybody can gain entrance to the terminal and with such situation on ground, touts can take advantage. No sane agents can do that,” he said.

Everyone is losing ....wonder why none of them would come to a compromise and let by gone be by gone undecided

This nonsense is very frustrating. I came back to Nigeria 3weeks ago and my personal items I sent through cargo have been stuck there. What kind of country is this? Are the clearing agents owners of the goods trapped? This comptroller is mad. Why not firstly release goods that required customs duty has been paid for? Why is an innocent citizen like me suffering the outcome of his dispute with clearing agents?

Brazen show of autocracy and abuse of authority everywhere....after diplomatic load, every oda load na nonentity load na abi...smh.
The reason these shyt heads can do all this shyt and get away with it is because we are not ready to hold public office holders accountable to the public...
if we turn up the heat with peaceful protests, petitions and draw sufficient media attention to this idiotic ransom-holding , that'll put pressure on the dickheads to make necessary adjustments and considerations.

The situation in Niger is becoming really frustrating
Re: Pandemonium At Lagos Airport As Customs, Agents Clash by bigtt76(f): 6:37pm On Nov 25, 2014
More than frustrating sef it is so idiotic! Don't the agents have management board that the Customs can hold to account and vice versa? we are into the crazy part of the year when everything would in rush. I just hope the Customs and Agents don't collude and tell us stories sha undecided

Dear All in One,

The situation is still the same. We have been advice to keep off from nahco premises for now to avoid unlawful arrest.

For now no activity at all.

Dear All

Work might resume any moment from now. As at yesterday the custom controller insist that work should resume both in courier and sahcol shed while nahco remains under lock but the agent refused out rightly that all the 3 shed must open if agent must go back to work.

From all indices when work resume tougher measure awaits nahco shed as the shed is in the black record of the controller. should work resume for now please use those flight that are naturally sahcol bound. To the controller nahco should be lock up out rightly.

Will keep you posted as event unfolds

Customs is under the finance ministry and not internal affairs.
Like I said most of the airport correspondents/journalists rely on Olanrewaju for hand outs. They will write what he wants.
Re: Pandemonium At Lagos Airport As Customs, Agents Clash by Caveatemptor(m): 4:21pm On Nov 27, 2014
While this war between the clearing agents and Olanrewaju goes on the poor importers are gonna suffer because-
1. All the sheds are shut. So if your cargo is consigned to Sahcol,Nahco or Nahco courier the goods will remain on the airport TARMAC where rain and sun will continue to bear down on them. Goods on yhe TARMAC are under the care of the gods any thing could happen to them in the night.
2.Those whose goods were already inside the sheds before the shut down of the airport will incur and MUST pay demurrage to the handlers.
Either way the importers are the losers in this battle to masturb@te the egos of Olanrewaju and the agents.
